Nice enough pub, even if it veers dangerously close to being foo-dominated. The main bar is fairly large and shows signs og being well looked-after and the beers, whilst not over-imaginative, are excellent - let's be honest, when an ale drinker has a choice of Black Sheep, a beer from the Taylor's stable and two from Copper Dragon things really aren't that bad (choice like this was rare as little as a decade ago). As for the grumpy landlord, I missed him completely and was instead served by a cheerful twenty year-old. A solid 7/10.

When entering the Shoulder of Mutton you will be "greeted" with a scowl (from probably the grumpiest landlord in West Yorkshire) that will let you know instantly that this is a local pub for local people and that 'your sort' are not welcomed here, but tolerated. The beers are inconsistent and unimaginative (Landlord and Black Sheep do not hold a candle to the vast array of great ales to be had from small Yorkshire breweries and a boring selection of the usual suspect lagers leaves you cold). The Robin Hood just up the road in Cragg Vale does a far superior selection of ales and real German lagers and a much nicer atmosphere. The food, however, is excellent and very reasonably priced. Roast belly pork and excellent fish and chips for under a fiver cannot be beaten in the area. I have given it a "1" for the food, because even that is spoilt by the 'host' and the 'atmosphere'.

Absolutely agree about the tellys and the beer but the roast pork dinners are superb.

Does a superb Sunday Roast for under a fiver, and had five ales on including Taylor's Landlord plus two from Copper Dragon.

Effectively a small public bar with a large dining area to the side, which extends around the corner into a separate room.

Directly opposite Mytholmroyd station and worth breaking a journey for Sunday lunch when I'm in the area.
