| This is a very disappointing venue and nothing in real life like it is portrayed on it's fantastic website! We waited ages for the barmaid to finish reading her paper or what ever she was doing out the back before she realised we were actually in the bar. She was a very nice, pleasant girl though. The landlord (I assume he was the landlord) was texting when we wanted serving again and finished doing this before he served us. The filthy, once white, sofa near the fireplace could benefit from a cover! The loos are clean and the garden is quite nice. The Old Hooky was cloudy but the Brakspears was a bit better. Two friends of the landlord came in and ordered food which looked nice. I would have been disappointed if I had decided to come here from seeing their website and then saw the place in the flesh! | Somewhat improved from its worst days, however lacked atmosphere inside, and the pub garden which could be lovely as its on the canal instead has wonky tables and a nice view of some industrial units. A bit of effort and it could be a real hit like the Jolly Boatman at Thrupp. On the plus side Old Hooky was on tap and in good form. OldRogue - 28 Dec 2011 19:01 |

| I was very dissapointed on my return to The Highwayman, When the new landlords took over it was very pleasent and the food was fantastic, But when i returned last week, the food was awful and the prices had gone up far too much,Now it does live up to the "highwayman"! As for being friendly, this wasn't the case either. They only seemed interested in the workmen propt at the bar, who i take it are regulars This is one but i will never return to0. | I went to the Highwayman a few days ago and was a little disappointed with the service. This was mainly to do with the fact that the barmaid did not honour the order of service at the bar: I had been waiting patiently for at least ten minutes when a local interrupted the barmaid and asked for a drink. He promptly got served before me. I've nothing against locals propping up the bar - after all many pubs would probably go to the wall without them. However the rules of courtesy should apply in all situations, and in my book the barmaid was wrong to apply favouritism here. It looked even worse that the favouritism was not even concealed, but was obvious to everybody standing around. On an unrelated note, if you have young children, the neglected gap in the fence (leading directly to the river) could well cause you fret rather than relax over your pint...
