Good old country pub with oak beams and atmosphere. Chippy the landlord is celebrating his 30th year behind the bar - and on the bar billiards table. He is revered locally as he puts a lot into the game. tommo5 - 3 Aug 2011 14:38 |
Stayed a couple of nights at the campsite at the rear of the pub in early september 09. Cheapish, 12 per night including electric hook up, with basic facilites. Site cluttered with abandoned vehicles and dogs allowed to run loose. The pub serves reasonable food but due to the low level of lighting it was hard to see what we were eating. A warm welcome from the scruffiest landlord I've seen for a long time. Good beer garden, great looking pub, nice atmosphere, slightly spoilt by a large tv in the corner, but that's only my personal opinion. arfajob - 13 Jul 2010 19:28 |
I have to agree, a great looking pub especially on a lovely summers evening. We visited on our way back from the south coast, I'd been here some years ago. The beer was acceptable, 7/10. However, it was the food that the landlord really needs to sort out. It all sounded great on the specials board. The pork steaks we ordered should've been served on a rosti but arrived on a pile of chips. When we cut into them they where RAW. The fish and chips where cheap frozen items and we where charged 9.95 for the privilage! Disgrace. keefer - 8 Jul 2010 19:44 |
If you wanted a picture of a traditional English pub this would do, but the Limeburners seems to survive mainly on trade from the campsite so I wouldn't be too dismissive about the happy campers. More significant is that the interior of the pub seems to be very largely set up for dining now; the leather couches that used to be around the fireplace have gone (allegedly to grace the landlord's living room) and are replaced by dining tables. Beer is Gale's (Fuller's) HSB and there are tables outside which are popular now that you can't smoke in pubs, but with the low ceilings in this public house the smoking ban is probably a blessing. rainlight - 28 Sep 2008 19:26 |
