| Quintessential British Country Pub If you had to take a tourist to only one pub this would be my choice. It has everything you would expect in a country pub. The thatched, oak beamed building with views across green fields where cows are chewing the cud is the ideal setting. The range of food on offer is excellent and the meals we chose were delicious. There is a good range of well kept real ales and a large selection of wines. All are served by happy, polite staff and are reasonably priced. Even the toilets have interesting artworks. | Two visits to this pub to form a strong opinion... A nice pub that has improved greatly since the post by chibloid just under two years ago... Firstly the beer, a nice selection with real ale on tap, kept well, a excellent selection of wines by the glass ( small and large) and by the bottle... a small selection of bottled beer,and the fabulous krabbies alcoholic ginger beer... Food served here is cooked by a Jamaican cook (so the bumpf says) and my choice on my first visit was curried goat.... goat cooked nicely.but the curry was underspiced, the yellow rice let the dish down as well, having had curried goat before this could be more full of flavour, our next visit saw us having sunday lunch, the meat was nicely cooked, the yorkshires were crisp and risen... and the veg was cooked well, i had fish pie as an alternative and was really please filled with fish and tasty too... main complaint, as outlined already over a year ago, not enough toast with the pate..... Also of note they have an event called Tilfest here... local bands, local beer and supported by locals.... This is a pub on the rise.... good luck to them Ziggles - 4 Aug 2010 22:57 |
| Been here a few times, and feel the previous review is a bit harsh. Food is "school dinners" done well - a bit like The Ivy! Good beer, good company and good food. What is clear is that the Landlord & Lady are keen to make a success of the pub, and put it back at the heart of the village community. Talking to locals, it seems to be working and is rapidly gaining in popularity. As the previous poster mentioned, they are new to the business, but they seem to have really got the place going in the time since the previous reviewer visited. | This nice old pub in Tilbrook, Cambridgeshire has recently changed hands. It had always had a good reputation for home cooked food at reasonable prices, so we decided to try their Sunday lunch which at �8.95 was about �3 dearer than under the old landlords. We had starters, french onion soup, pat� and stuffed mushrooms which were fine although there was insufficient toast to go with the pat�. The main course, either roast beef or roast pork was really disappointing. The beef had been done to death and was chewy and tough and the yorkshire pudding was a sight to behold, flat spongy and overcooked, not the lovely light puffy yorkshire we are used to. The roast spuds were grim, again overcooked and tough and the vegetable selection was insufficient for 4 hungry diners. The pork was no better and the stuffing was not nice at all. This young couple admit they have never run a pub before and it shows; confusion behind the bar and poor food will mean that they won't survive to run the White Horse for very long. My advice would be to find a new chef as a matter of urgency as the one they've got just hasn't got a clue. Chibloid - 9 Nov 2008 16:13 |
