| We had another fabulous meal at the Racehorse two weekends ago. We went with friends for Sunday lunch and were greeted by the friendly staff, the lovely log fire was a very pleasant welcome in this cold weather. We all chose something different. The whitebait starter was fresh and plentyful. The venison was superbly cooked and very flavoursome; the Sunday roast beef was deliciously tender as was the roast turkey; and the fillet steak was to die for, all served with plenty of freshly cooked vegetables, in fact more than we could finish. The deserts were freshly made and we tried the chocolate orange tarte which nicely rounded off the meal. I do not hesitate in recommending the Racehorse. dubdub - 20 Dec 2010 14:58 |
| I agree with RugbyHooker (below comment). I have been to the Racehorse before the management change in June 2010 and always found the food very nice. Unfortunately I cannot say the same since the takeover... today was my 3rd visit since the re-opening and to be honest what a huge disappointment it was again. The food was shockingly bad this time (I had Lasagna, which to be honest looked like it had been sitting around all day, was soggy, the 'cheese' on top appeared to be curdled and was awful in taste. If I were a Chef I would be embarrassed to have served this to anyone). The food served to me was not edible and had to be sent back (this is the first time I have ever sent a meal back!). The food is also very very over-priced for what you get. It is a shame as this is my local pub/restaurant and I have to say that I will not be going back again. pubgoing - 10 Oct 2010 18:58 |
| Under old management, the Racehorse was brilliant. Great food, pleasant service, and reasonable prices. The lunch buffet was one of the best meals in the area for quick but delicious pub fare. Since June 2010 the new management re-made the Racehorse as a pretentious, over-priced "Euro-pub" with lackluster food. Case in point: today we had a farewell luncheon for some friends; my lunch of bangers and mash was horrible. The sausage was undercooked (the inner portion of the Cumberland sausage roll being just slightly better than raw), and the mashed potatoes were lumpy, cold and hardly edible. Not once did the waitress come by to ask how the meal was (to any of us). Other customers around me commented that their meals were "adequate" and "not exciting" and "not worth the money". If this was the first time I had eaten a poor meal here, I wouldn't post this online. But it seems to be a pattern, hence, take your chances... past meals have included fish and chips (so-so), roulade of chicken studded with chorizo (tasteless), and marinated lemon chicken skewers (I'd rather go to a curry shop). | We celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary by having dinner at this pub. The meal was excellent, the service was timely, unrushed, personal and very welcoming. The owners are courteous, interested in their patrons and create the right atmosphere. This was our second visit and we will now attend regularly. The beer is splendid, by the way!
