I'm afraid I just didn't take to this pub, which is probably unfair because there isn't a lot actually wrong with it. The beer was perfectly fine (Pride and Deuchars if I remember right) ; the staff weren't unpleasant, and it was clean and tidy. I think what put me off slightly was that all the tables, and I mean every single one, were set with cutlery. I felt as if I was somehow intruding by only wanting a quick pint. I've got no problems with pubs serving food; some of the very best pubs serve excellent food (I love the Old Dog in Herongate) but the way the bar was laid out made me feel that I was EXPECTED to eat and I felt slightly out of place. Decided to take the tribe out for a Sunday lunch and remembered this pub was pretty good but could get busy at lunchtime. Having checked here and found Glenn's review was quite positive and recent, we went for it. I have to say that this pub is still a good place for a Sunday lunch. We had three really well cook dishes and my pint of IPA was in good condition and slipped down just a treat! My only small concern was that the pub was nothing like as busy as I remember it being. It looks like the downturn is biting the pub trade badly. Get out there folks and support out pubs or we'll lose gems like the Royal Oak. rpcordell - 11 Jan 2009 14:48 |
Nice range of beers and lengthy menu, six of us all ordered different dishes and there was a reassuringly long (but not too long) wait before they were all served together. Much more of a restaurant than a pub these days, and the meals were all excellent. The San Miguel was icy cold and slipped down a treat. One quibble: our guests brought a pushchair along and missed the "no pushchairs" sign on the outside window . They were greeted by a posse of staff firmly directing them back outside. Following the about-turn, the staff all disappeared, leaving us sheepishly standing in the doorway. Not thw best greeting. I don't mind the pushchair rule, but prioritising the policing of it over greeting the guests who are about to give you a hundred quid plus seems slightly misguided... glenn9ball - 22 Dec 2008 14:51 |
