Excellent find just a short stroll from the town centre.

Friendly, welcoming landlord and staff and enjoyed a chat and some pool with some of the locals in the bar area. Live music in the lounge.

Very well kept pint of Salopian Shropshire Gold. Around £3.30 from memory.

Also TT Landlord available.

Recommended.

Decent atmosphere in the bar, and a reasonable pint of Salopian Shropshire Gold but, as others have said, essentially a locals' pub.

Tried this pub instead of The Woodman across the road this trip.
The bar is plain but has a tap room atmosphere and a friendly landlady. Bench seats around the outside wall with cushions, dart board above the fireplace and a pool table round the other corner of the bar. 5 or 6 locals with a couple popping in, not bad for 7pm Thursday night. The Hookey Bitter was good and well kept. Didn't go in the lounge, seemed a bit quiet, but I presume it is where the advertised entertainment is held. All in all a decent old fashioned friendly local.

I have to say RobCamra's report doesn't sound like the Bird in Hand that I occasionally visit. The staff are always very friendly and I would say the Timothy Taylors Landlord is invariably spot on (up there with other pubs in the town that usually have it on such as the 3 Fishes or The Nags Head). I went to one of the Acoustic Nights recently and it was standing room only.

In summary a well run pub that's well worth a visit. Certainly superior to The Salopian which local Camra menbers decided was the 'best Pub in Shropshire'. I wouldn't put it in the top ten in Shrewsbury never mind Shropshire!

Locals pub half way up Coton Hill. Has a decent enough exterior, if a little shabby. All the curtains were closed which doesn't make it look welcoming. Has two entrances, the one on the left goes to the bar and the one on the right into the lounge. You can't get from one to the other without going outside. Which is how I noticed the covered smoking area out the back with seating and a lit chimnea to keep people warm. A nice touch that. Has 3 handpumps but only two were on serving Deuchars and TT Landlord. Had a pint of the Landlord which was very average, and that's being kind. There were 3 or 4 people sat at the bar and a couple playing pool which pretty much filled the room. I went to sit in the lounge to read my paper, where you could almost hear the tumbleweed rolling through. It's not really a bad place but looks to be struggling. I don't think I'll be coming back to be honest.
