Very quiet for a Friday night - just me and a couple of golf bores in the bar (full marks to the very pleasant barmaid who did not once betray the ennui that the endless one-upmanship must have inspired in her). Low-ceilinged bar with a grubby carpet and peeling doors looked straight through the bar (couldn't see a gantry) to a lounge that reminded me of a working men's club from the 1970s. Beer excellent - had a pint each of Woodforde's Wherry, Black Sheep Bitter and Doom Bar. The foundations for a decent pub are there (barmaid and beer are faultless) - all it needs is a lick of paint, some carpet shampoo and the elimination of an irritating bing-bong noise that soundtracked the evening. Very smart interior. A decent selection of real ales ( I had the Woodforde Wherry). Attentive barman made sure I got served OK, it was a busy night. Some of the customers were a bit noisy but they were friendly. From an outsider, it appears that the local perception of this pub dates back to earlier less salubrious times? markh737 - 18 Sep 2010 21:21 |
This was the forth pub I tried on Thursday trying to get some lunch. On entering, something didn't seem right. It did not feel very "pubby" - if that is a word. From the limited menu, prices and foreign staff it felt yuppie. Having now read the previous reviews I'm not sure if my first impressions were right. As a last resort I would make my way to the Royal Standard (not that I have been in there before). fugglehops - 10 Apr 2010 18:41 |
One time I was passing this gods-forsaken place and a local Fennite burst out the front door, wandered into the middle of the road and started mouthing off to the traffic. A typical day at the Kings Arse. It always looked condemned from the outside... followedthrough - 6 Mar 2010 16:09 |
