Amazing pub. Was here for a friends baby naming ceremony on the Saturday and went to visit on the Friday and Sunday. FRIDAY - Live music was on, a very lively jazz act. They were brill. Full table service which was brill to see in a British pub. They were busy, but the staff were knowledgeable about the drink range. Excellent pint of DoomBar. SATURDAY - We had one half of the pub closed off for my friends party. The buffet food was great, varied and interesting. The staff were busy but didnt forget about us at all. SUNDAY - Sunday lunch was yummy, again full table service we had a table of 14 in the conservatory. The staff weren't as attentive as they were on Friday but still knowledgable and competent. A classic pub that has moved with the times to keep evolving. Liked the full table service, the range of draught products. Disliked the outside wasnt to a fantastic standard and could do with a facelift. Real_Ale_beth - 2 Nov 2011 23:24 |
Visited this pub on a Sunday and whilst clearly understaffed - I watched and waited with patience as the staff ran around trying to keep everyone happy and satisfied. I found the manager attentive when I explained the problem and as well as not charging me for the meals, he gave me a voucher for my family to return for drinks on him. We were more than satisfied with this - I can tell a previous reviewer wasnt - I feel people want to much for nothing as opposed to accepting that business experience problems - if an experienced and very large manager felt the need to ask the reviewer to calm down then i would suggest he was being more than a tad aggressive. A manager who cares about his business, the food was reasonable, the drink range wide and the atmosphere very good - just need to sort out the staffing and technical issues they were having and lose the err something for nothing type people and they'd have an amazing pub. controlman - 2 Nov 2011 23:15 |
We met up with family and were planning to have a nice sunday roast. We sat at our table and decided what we were going to eat. It was fairly busy and we waited a short while for the waitress to take our order. About thirty minutes later a waiter came to our table with two plates of food one of which was fish and the other one a roast. We said that they were probably for another table, as none of us had ordered fish, but five of us had ordered the roast pork. So he left the one plate with the pork, luckily my son didn't touch the food, as thirty seconds later the waiter came back and took the plate away. Reminded me of a Basil Fawlty sketch. After an hour and a quarter, and two visits to the bar to ask when we could expect our food, the waiter brought four of the six meals to the table. Two of us watched the other four eat, and by then we had all lost our appetites due to being so angry. I finally decided to have a word with the 'manager', asked what had happened to our food, and was told there had been a glitch with the computer system and they had lost eight orders, but they had still managed to send four meals to our table. When I protested, I was told to calm down and he would speak to me when he'd sorted out the problem with another customers order. While I was waiting, a poor couple who were trying to get their food, just walked out in disgust. After I sat down to wait for an apology another lady went to enquire about her food. When we finally got an explanation, the 'manager' told us about the problem he had with staff. We made it clear that we had no intention of paying for the meals, which by the way, were of very poor quality, we've had better food at half the price, and were told that was fine. We were also given a card which would entitle us to a round of drinks free on our next visit. The card was thrown away. We will not be going back. As another reviewer said, this pub could be great in the right hands. You have been warned! Crownroast - 23 Oct 2011 21:52 |
Had a good spell for a couple of years in 2009/10, the quiz hosted by the American guy was excellent, but in the last 10months it's gone seriously downhill. Unstocked fridges/bar mid afternoon on a Friday, food choices have really dipped from what was a really good varied menu, and you're lucky if you get it served in reasonable time. Shame, used to really like the place and it was our nearest pub, but it never fails to disappoint these days. JBJL - 17 Oct 2011 17:43 |
My word this place has gone downhill. Popped in today with some friends and family (we had booked) and had to wait over 90 minutes for a bog standard sausage and mash. All the hallmarks of bad management were there: slow and ineffecient staff, badly kept drinks (we had to twice take back some soft drinks because they were flat) and terrible service. There was no apology for the late food and the staff were surley and unhelpful. Could and should be a lovely pub, as it was a couple of years ago, but needs a change in management. halfafarthing - 1 Jan 2011 22:36 |
