Large attractive looking pub, on the main road just along from the lake. Good to see that its back to its proper name, it went through a phase a few years back of being called The Tickled Trout which I always thought was rather daft. The pubs a mix of several different areas, with a decent sized bar area at the front with a suitably country pub feel to it with some comfy leather sofas, smaller bar area off to the right and a large restaurant area overlooking the garden. The garden itself is a good size, and a popular spot on a nice summers day. Good choice on the menu, with quite a few specials on the board as well. Food was a bit of a mixed bag really nothing particularly wrong with it, but nothing very memorable either. Portions were generous, but the meatballs and pasta came with a salad which seemed odd, and Mrs. Blackthorn was none too impressed with the garlic bread. Most of the mains hovered around the 9 and this seemed a bit expensive for the food that we got. Beers on this occasion were London Pride and Wickwars BOB. I walked out of this pub many years ago as the only cider they had on was Strongbow it was good to see that they took my objections on board, and they now have a wider, if slightly uninspiring choice, namely Blackthorn, Olde English, Gaymers Original & Gaymers Pear. This pub has been one of our favourite haunts over the last 5 years and friends and I loyally went there en masse to enjoy superb food, wine and atmosphere. On the back of this, my partner and I decided to stay there 2 weekends ago and have dinner in the evening. It was not a good experience. Here is a list of things which spoilt our evening : *First, a wine glasses still had lipstick marks on it and we had to get it changed. *We were not offered a choice of wine and the bottle was opened before we had opted for the other one !! The starters were ok, but the mains were appalling. My partner had some small piece of white fish, covered in, what we identified as Ragu sauce - and pitiful, tasteless vegetables. In addition, I was given a garlic baguette which had blatently come out of a supermarket bag and freezer. We had a quiet word with the waitress who assured me it was home made (erm, no - I think not) and to top it off, my partner was very poorly in the night and appeared to be related to what he had eaten. The accommodation was fine, but the breakfast was below average. So, I wasn't very happy at forking out 133 pounds for a pretty miserable evening. They have let us down - and we won't be going back. neither will our friends. I don't know what has changed, but it hasn't changed for the better I'm sorry to say. cgrosart - 12 Feb 2010 13:54 |
A large pub just up from the chew lake, seems to be doing a bit of everything. Several people like myself struggled to gain entrance to bar as it was covered with a fly screen.Didn't try the food but, spied the Menu, seemed a bit pricey nothing out of the ordinary.Enjoyed my pint of Spitfire, and was informed the John simths was alright.Open all day,the interior was a bit dark.Didn't say come back again to me this pub but there you are. james55westhead - 11 Sep 2009 14:16 |
