Sadly gone for good as the landlord of 40 years has retired. He has sold the land but is keeping the building to live in.One of the best pubs on the island . lowerbourneshot - 19 May 2014 15:25 |

Far and away the best pub we visited on the Isle of Wight this weekend. The Prince of Wales is a proper drinkers pub. Most places situated in back streets have to be good to survive these days, without passing trade. This one does not disappoint and has probably earned its reputation amongst islanders. The main bar at the front is fairly small and narrow, with a pool table at one end. Pot plants are placed on each table and there is a wealth of curios above the bar. The rear room has more tables than you may think at first sight. Nobody was drinking in there. So we chose to drink in the main bar, where several locals were congregated. The Prince of Wales seems to be run by a couple, who were in evidence during our visit. They certainly serve a good range of ales - Andwell King John, Arkells 3B, Wadworth Henry's IPA, Yates's Mew's Prince of Ales & Ballards Midhurst Mild were all on during our visit. Sadly they don't serve a real cider. I'm afraid I'm going to pull the ratings down slightly, in awarding of 8/10. But I don't give 8 or 9 ratings lightly! Long may pubs like this one survive. blue_scrumpy - 5 Jun 2012 20:27 |
Sorry to see no reviews for more than a year. Let's put that right. We were on holiday in the Isle of Wight, staying in Freshwater, and took BITE users' recommendations to try out this pub. We found a landlady and landlord who took an instant and genuine interest in new faces and a friendly and witty clientele. They don't do food anymore, but the local Mews beer was in superb condition. The Isle of Wight is riddled with so-called pubs which are really restaurants in all but name. So what a relief to come across a genuine drinkers' pub. They have removed Guinness because of the soaring wholesale prices. We are sure it won't be missed, and there are plenty of other good stouts on the market. Let's hope for the sake of Freshwater residents that the long-serving licensees are around for a good while yet. Braganca - 24 Aug 2011 21:43 |
Recently visited this pub. Very friendly landlord and landlady. Warm and inviting atmosphere with a traditional juke box to keep us entertained. Good selection of real ale and strong lager at very reasonable prices. Pool and darts available and football on TV (especially if you support Derby County). We popped in one afternoon and were made to feel so welcome that we went back the following evening. We caught a bus from Yarmouth to freshwater and the landlady ran us back to our holiday house. That's service beyond the call of duty!! Anyone wanting a traditional pub this is the place for you. bluebird321 - 2 May 2010 17:05 |
