A wetherspoons pub, so you know what you are getting. Good range of beers, but probably not kept well, and likely to be at the end of their sell but date, so they are cheap. As usual with the is chain, full of lots of sad looking men nursing a pint, from even as early as 9 in the morning.

On foot, on my way to the Jolly Colliers I decided to have a quick one in here. Two bar staff on and judging by the speed of service, I would have been here until the early hours of the next morning if I asked for more? Bass was on @ 1.95 and OK.

MisterX couldn't have put it any better. Popped in last nite for first time in a while and was very dissappointed to say the least. 2 X Pedigree 2 X Abbot 2 X Ruddles 1 X Cider 1 X Exmoor Beast 1 X Butcombe 1 X Three Castles (Prob the only vaguely interesting one)
Basically six handpumps wasted!,for a better JDW offering it has to be St Georges Hall or even The Knights Templar,
6/10

Not been in for a while but boy has this place gone downhill fast! Beer range being the biggest "Bore Fest" in any JDW pub I've visited of late - uninspired, dull, boring! C'mon Manager, you can do far better than this - of 12 ish pumps most were duplicated and beer that can be had anywhere. Dull, dull, dull!
Don't even get me started on the service (Arrrggghhh!) offered (or rather not!) by the staff in question on the night I visited. My friend and I both had to wait ages, firstly for one young lady being diligent in filling the cooler full of beer bottles and ignoring all the waiting punters at the bar and the 2nd occasion just someone so untrained as to know when a barrel was empty despite her 350th pull on the hand pump and *NO* beer coming out - Err give up love, it be empty I tell ye! {sigh}
Rubbish !!!

Typical Spoons, now with some staff previously noted in other local Mac outlets on the merry go round. Beer range of all the usual suspects, slightly enhanced by 2 from Otter,Head and Amber, the Amber being good. Not much else could be said really.
|
Fairly typical Wetherspoons, although quite a decent one. It was suprisingling quiet on a Tuesday night, when I've been in here on a weekend it can get packed. Service seemed a bit slow and not particulary friendly. A few drinks at 99p (eg; Ruddles Countly and some of the bottled lager). Blackthorn was 2.40 which isn't too bad I suppose. Shame the Ashton Press was off though.

Drink & service much better of late, nice to be able to spend my CAMRA JDW vouchers in here too and save some dosh. :-)
|
Hallelujah! Not a laptop or a bawling "Charlie" or "Jemima" in sight. Felt like a proper boozer where people come to DRINK and CONVERSE. Something of a relief after previous pubs on the Dandillus' Southville excursion. Full of old chaps drinking ale, and had gorgeous pints of Arbor Ales Oyster Stout and Golden Hare (although GH was a little bit lageresque to my likng). Service was excellent with bar maid asking if we wanted to try before buying (always a nice touch)

Seemed to be cleaning half the beer lines on a Saturday evening but managed to get a decent pint in the end.
Very posh for a Spoons as far as the interior goes, very library-like with leather sofas. You can tell Bedminster is the setting for Bristols version of This Life when the local Spoons is upmarket.
Not bad.

The toilets are a bit far away from the bar, the service is awful, the beer isn't too bad (the Abbot was adequate at least) and did i mention the service?
|
Yeah think you summed the service problem up a_e_m, there's one particular barmaid that has been there for some time and whenever she's on forget getting served in a hurry as a) She's so slow to serve and b) She spends half her time gassing to regulars & friends. Not very professional at all - Manager *please* take note as this has been going on for ages and it's just plain rude and poor customer service and even my sarky comments/hints about this to her waft straight over her head.
Must say though apart from all the points in a_e_m's review about the clientle the beer range and condition has been tip-top for some while here now which is nice to say about any JDW outlet. Shame it's 1/2 a mile round trip to the loos as well!

Made my occasional visit to find the usual spoons cross section of society-screaming kids, old alkeys, young students and diners enjoying Brake Brothers microwaved delights. The service was reasonable(all men serving) and the ale was good, although all the guests(Exmoor Exmas,Theakstons OP and Arbor Snuffy Jacks) were all a bit strong. Yeah not too bad this time.

DavidSmall123 seems to forget that this is a pub and if he wants a coffee he should go to a COFFEE SHOP! Wetherspoon's are notoriously understaffed so I can't believe that the people "standing around chatting" were bar staff. Having said that, I've had no delays getting served in each of my regular visits and there's a fine range of beers of beers on at the moment with a lot of local brewers represented. Well worth a visit.

My wife and I have just moved to the area and we popped in the this pub for a light lunch. we have been to wetherspoons before and know what we can expect. as we walk in there was a lot of people at the bar. the pub was not very busy but the Que was large. my wife sat down and i went to the bar to order drinks before the food. i was waiting for at least 10 minutes and when i was served the bar lady was very nice and said sorry for the wait. i ordered a white coffee and an ale from a large selection. But when i ask for a coffee the bar lady rolled her eyes and seemed annoyed at me. she then poured half my drink and started to make the coffee, were she continued to chat to other members of staff at the coffee machine while people were waiting at the bar. All three bar staff were chatting and no one was serving. it took about 12-15 minute for me to be served in total.......WAY TO LONG. my wife and i left and had lunch at the salt bar down the road. I nice old looking pub. with good selection of ales, it just need a landlord who you can see, and could tell the staff to stop chatting. in all, not the best wetherspoon i have ever been to. will try again another day 1/10
|
hi all! it's that time again! the beer festival has kicked off today with 50 ales available over the next 2 weeks! i have double ordered everything so if you miss it once i'm sure you will catch it again before the 2weeks are up! look forward to seeing you all here, did i mention it is only 1.59 a pint?.....

Much better of late, apart from the old couple sat in the booth behind me effing and blinding at each other all night.... cheap booze/Weatherspoons & delinquent OAP's sadly seem to go hand in hand all over the country I'm afraid. {sigh}
Guest beer range far better, tried a pint of Archers Crystal Clear which would have been perfect if not served through the dreaded sparkler/creamer which any fool knows ruins a good pint and not how it should be served. Those niggles aside could not fault it and I've not enjoyed drinking in here for a few years so more than happy to see it returning gradually to somwhere near it's potential.

We will be holding a Winter Ale Festival from the 7th of January to the 14th of January. 21 Ales including (Hopefully!)a brand new ale from Great Wesern brewing Company called 'Old Higby'. Will also feature Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby and Wessex Rushian stout. All welcome along, see you there!
|
Vastly improved range last night,(Banks and Taylor and Hidden were v good.)
Quiet for a Wetherspoons.
Alas a kid was screaming the place down-and guess what reader-the staff were unperturbed.
|
Firstly. It is blantantly obvious that "US the customer" is staff/management,so please don't think people are fools. And don't tell fibs. People will try the pub and judge themselves.
Now down to business, visited Sat nite(prob not the best move!) and Tues eve. Most exciting ale was Wickwar's Long John Silver that wasn't exactly brilliant on the Saturday-it was still on on the Thurs, but ran out when I asked for it,wonder was it the same nine?(Hope not.) However the Archers Wheat beer ordered instead was good, but a bit thin at 3.8%. As for all this selection-well the only other "guest" on Tuesday was Abbot Reserve 6.5%(only for loonies!) Its Spoons,so as usual it had the tradtional 2 "Coming soons" which were Bishops Finger and Courage Best! Oh yeah,2 pumps had Bass on,oh and one handpull had cider in it!!! The range is diminishing....
But thats before I start on the service. The Sat nite was busy,a managery bloke behind the bar was up to it but the staff were a bit spoonsish. The Tuesday,it was 3 girls who prefer their idle chitchat than remembering who they're serving. I wouldn't hold out much hope of getting me change back from anyone in this boozer if the girl gave it to the wrong person!!! And then as for the customers-strewth,a couple of cans of CS gas and an AK47 might be the solution.
Final verdict. Its a normal spoons, don't try tag on the coat tails of the "abnormal" one in Bristol, the excellent Commercial Rooms. Will return, cos I'm brave. Assembly anyone.

this pub has change and is coming back in style! I know there were alot of problems in the past (Beer WAS rubbish and there WAS a bit of trouble) but this has now after 5 months hard work from the NEW management it has changed. There is always 11 ales on ranging from your run of the mill pedigree and abbott to your every changing guest ales (Usually 7) including hidden brewery, bath ales, exmoor ales, archers and more of your favourites every week. Current have a beer festival on (Spoons standard)with some extra specials added by the pub on request from US the customer. they are really working hard to get into the Good Beer Guide and will hopefully suceed. All i can say is if you like a good pint of real ale this is the place to go! Give them a try, if you did in the past plase give them a clean slate to judge them from.

As with all wetherspoons there is no music, but sometimes it can be heard from the kitchen. The pub has a large interior and a fairly large two sided bar. Recently the pub has gone through alot of personnel changes and went through a rough stage with yobs frequenting. Several fights broke out and thus the wetherspoons reputation tarnished sumwhat. It has picked up in the last couple of months and looks to be getting back to its best. It can get very crowded particularly on a weekend. The pub serves a variety of ales and a selection of guest ales which alternate. By day it is very much an old mans pub, but because of it's large size you would go unnoticed as the pub has many regulars. The ale is good and the pub is well furnished and maintained. It has a very small beer garden, which goes virtually unnoticed just off the non smoking area towards the rear of the pub. There are two entrances to this pub and no matter what end you come out of another pub is in sight. If you want a pub crawl or a starting place for a night out in the centre, this is a good start.

average spoons fayre, still worth a visit 4 a decent beer, 7/10
|
excellent range of cask ale. good food.
|
Standard W'spoons outlet (sic). Wide range of good quality beer at cheap prices. Service can be infuriating at times (e.g. staff bottling up when customers are waiting). Latest ruse is to advertise Extended Opening times (to 1am Fri & Sat, midnight other nights) but not allow anyone in after 11pm.
|
Probably the best thing that ever happened to Bedminster was Weatherspoons decision to turn a shop into the RF. Those that know Bedminster will appreciate what a big gamble this was for JDW. Its the classiest pub in the area and the beer is always good. Plenty of seating, clean and friendly. Bit of a working mans pub and can get loud on a friday from lunchtime. Food is the usual JDW fodder but good, simple and honest.
