Grove, Ealing

user reviews of The Grove, Ealing

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I've walked past this place for years, finally started going in, and glad I did. They've got 5 pump handles all with guest ales, none of which are on for very long so they must do a decent volume. Food is also excellent, both lunch and dinner.
specialimport - 7 Jan 2017 15:27
Just like Snarling Mallard, I was pleasantly surprised at the Grove. I've done most pubs in Ealing. But I've never set foot in this one before. Around half of the pub is reserved for drinkers and the other half is reserved for diners, with an open kitchen at the one end. The ale selection was good - London Fields Hackney Hopster, Greene King IPA, Sambrooks Wandle, Vale Gravitas, Sharps Doom Bar & Hogs Back Surrey Nirvana. No real cider is served. But they did have Hogs Back Hazy Hog on keg - the first time I've seen that other than in a bottle. Seems like it's possible a rugby pub. But the place is clearly proud of its food and is in the Michelin guide. It also deserves its place in the Good Beer Guide.
blue_scrumpy - 23 Mar 2015 20:29
Quite surprised by the ales on offer and the quality (Dark Star Hophead, Stroud Organic, Trumanns). It has your typical open plan quasi gastro look (as opposed to the multi roomed days when it was the Queen Vic) but not a bad place to try an ale or two.
anonymous - 23 Aug 2014 16:13
The beer garden here is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. There is an interesting selection of ales available that change almost daily. If you're looking to have a meal, find a table in the beautiful restaurant that opens out into another garden. You'll find the standard pub favourites like fish and chips, burgers and steak, but I reccomend trying the pork or lamb. Don't forget to leave room for dessert, the sticky toffee pudding is aways a winner.
sundayroast - 30 Jul 2013 13:54
no telly, relaxed atmosphere, stout bad but plenty of good other beers.
newirish - 21 Jul 2012 20:56
If you're in here on a weekend afternoon, it'll be busy without being too horrendous, there's nice decor, lots of nooks and crannies to sit, food is ok and they have decent beers on. If you're in here on a Friday night ... well, there'll be bouncers on the door (never a good sign for a pub), it'll be rammed with all Ealing's suits and secretaries screeching and the music will be up too loud. Pick which is better for you!
normantonend - 18 Mar 2012 12:29
Impersonal service - been greeted once in a more friendly way after maybe a year where I'd been having a pint there at least twice a week in the afternoon when it's not busy.
The place is rather large, and nicely decorated, but it get's busy only on Friday evening with after work crowd, or sometimes during university holidays with students - so the rest of the time it lacks atmosphere, and appears empty even when there is a normal occupancy for a weekday in a suburban pub.
When the pub is packed, you probably have to wait too long to be served.
Haven't tried the food but I never heard a good thing about it.
Pints are OK, and the Carlsberg I found to be the cheapest lager in Ealing.
Overall very reasonable compared to other options in the area but nothing to write home about.

guevald - 5 Jan 2012 12:24
ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVOURITES, GOOD BARSTAFF
formworker123 - 1 Sep 2011 11:54
Large pub, while no specific major negative points their selection of beers seemed to number a couple that were "coming soon" but never arrived.

OK as a music venue.
_grobag_ - 12 Aug 2011 14:19
Update on facilities/features: Live jazz last Saturday of each month, no pool table or TV that I could see. GKIPA, Abbott and guest ales.
oak_cliff - 4 Aug 2011 17:02
The refurb has made a huge difference. The inside is nicely done, with some lovely nooks and crannies to settle into. There's a cyclical selection of 4 real ales on the go at any time with another two settling and, even though it gets busy, the bar staff seem to be on their toes most of the time.

The food is a bit of a let down. There's lots of it so you won't starve but it's not up to the standards of the Kings Arms or the Red Lion, which are the nearest competition. i think it's trying to be more sophisticated than it needs to be and, whilst ambition is no bad thing, it needs to be backed up by ability to deliver.

The best thing about it, however, is that the kids have gone elsewhere to drink and Ealing has acquired another half-decent boozer.

porcus_volans - 9 May 2011 13:48
Now called The Grove, this is definitely the most improved pub in Ealing for a long time. Better decor, better wine/cider/beer selection, better seating and use of space, an overall nice atmosphere, all of which were previously lacking.

Only downside & criticism is no more live music, which is scarse now is Ealing pubs and when it's busy, expect a long wait at the bar (which for me, has only ever happened on a Thursday evening!)
sdavies - 12 Apr 2011 17:46
When this pub had the refurb, I was worried it would go downhill, but Im glad to be proved wrong. Its a great place to chill, and is not overpriced either.
mrbee - 10 Feb 2011 17:27
Although still undergoing a refurb this place has been a studenty "dive" since it was renamed as Finnegan's Wake.

It was not previously the Queen's Head- it was the Queen Vic. It is rumoured that it was the inspiration for the pub of the same name in Eastenders, the early script writers drank there.

Difficult to rate given that it is closed but I will give it a max rating based on the fact that when Micheal Theale ran it in the 90's it was the best in ealing.
imaginarynumber - 11 Sep 2010 09:04
In old days was the Queens Head and was in the film ' A Kind of Loving' with Ralph Bates and Thora Hird. Doubt it will ever be a proper pub again.
anonymous - 30 Aug 2010 10:01
Large Greene King pub housed in a rather austere brick building located in a good position opposite Ealing Green. Inside, the horseshoe-shaped bar offers plenty of seating (supplemented by quite a few benches in a fenced-off area out the front). The few customers were mostly students with guitars, and it soon became apparent why it was nearly empty as most of the beers were off. However, this was later explained because the pub is closing for a major refurbishment this weekend and they were using up the stock. All a bit odd, but I will probably return as I was promised that they will have more real ales on when it reopens.
rpadam - 21 Aug 2010 12:59
Being from Bromley in kent this is'nt exactly my local, but a rock band I follow (4 Wheel Drive) were having a gig at this gaff for the first time so I checked out the reviews here first.
I was pleasantly supprised when I arrived to find not a whiff of the smell previous reviews mention. There was also plentiful barstaff and I was served promptly,as a cider drinker I cant comment on what the ales like, but the stongbow was perfectly acceptable.
Loved the size of the place and the seperate area for live bands was very proffesional.A nice touch was as a smoker I was able to stand out front in the heated smoking area and still hear and catch the band through the many screens around the bar area that were showing the stage area.Had one of the pizza's they do even though I'd eaten a spag bol before I'd come out and it was very nice. All in all I would love to pick this pub up and drop it in my area as we're a bit short of quality live music venues.
dubdaz - 21 Mar 2010 17:05
The old manager was (allegedly) arrested? Guess that would explain the door policy being rigidly enforced these days... still an average pub, mostly decent clientele. Not the worst, at any rate.
E1_Norton - 9 Jun 2009 17:22
Lav.
realalesnob - 10 May 2009 19:10
The smell could well be the drains which are permanently blocked up and spew raw sewage back through the floors into the toilets or out into the beer garden at the side. Or it could be the smell of dead mice, whch are infesting the whole pub, including all over the kitchen, apparently. I wouldn't eat there either if I were you.
As for the health and safety boys they would have a field day in the place!
capitalone - 6 Feb 2009 15:48
This is a very young pub, but that should in no way put you off. A popular spot for my friends and I when we meet to watch a sporting event and the massive bar is well stocked with a good range. My one criticism there is that it can get busy and we have been known to walk out because of the waiting time to be served.
Hanwale - 13 Oct 2008 13:47
Ill agree that this has a student pub feel to it, not that it is a problem in anyway. I spotted a few premium lagers and an abundance of bog standard ones. No real ales though!

The barman was friendly and the price was reasonable. As mentioned before, there are plenty of screens for watching sport and there is also a dart board and a pool table.

There is some nice seating outside the front of the pub which is great for watching Ealing locals roll by.

This is an OK pub for sport, but Id probably drink elsewhere at other times.
Strongers - 31 Jul 2008 08:21
A great place to watch sport as it has screens on every available wall and plays different games and sports in the same area but on different screens depending on which way your facing. As such I've been able to sit in a group whilst I watch the rugby, another guy watches football and a third watched the cricket all at the same table. Very convinient. The beer is pretty standard chain pub fare with no guest ales or anything particularly special. The food is cheap if your ordering two meals (it's permanently 2 for 1) but I've eaten there three times now trying differant things off the menu and have yet to have something good but I guess you get what you pay for.
theoneandonlyjoe - 30 Apr 2008 13:07
Went here a couple of times over the last 6 months. One time it was busy, studenty and not altogether friendly. One time it was quiet, staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. Might well go back, esp if the lovely pool-playing buxom brunette is there ;-)
E1_Norton - 5 Feb 2008 13:25
Very much a student pub, so I probably wouldn't personally go here on an evening but for a sporting event it is great, loads of TV's and the biggest screen you are likely to ever see outside of a cinema. The beers cheap and ok the food is cheap and near to inedible.
mikel - 25 Jun 2007 14:50
This is definitely a student pub.

The back room is well used for live acoustic gigs, bands and even a comedy night on a Monday evening - They have had a few star turns as well!

There are plenty of screens for sport or "dodgy young persons music videos".

Cheap average pub chain food and drink, loads of non students and a hang out for post work locals means no one feels or looks out of place.

EskimoJoe - 4 Jun 2007 14:31
They do great deals on food, 241 on selected meals. foods not great, but if your skint and hungry its the place to be. thumbs up.
anonymous - 29 Mar 2007 19:09
great pub, good food. brilliant atmosphere on a friday night with a really good house band that has everyone, drunk or sober, up dancing by the end of the night.
nicki_noodles - 18 Feb 2007 13:50
Re: The last comment - Finnegans hasn't closed down but getting done up - I think it's finished now, though I haven't been in since the work on it so couldn't say what it's like.
C.B - 15 Oct 2006 22:30
Has this place closed down?

I've driven past there a couple of times recently and the sign out the front has been taken down and it looks like the place is being gutted.....

I'll give it a 6 because it was a good pub to watch football in but one of the bar staff always tried to pour me a shitty pint and then moaned when I sent it back.
brodie_bruce - 21 Sep 2006 12:07
was one of the first pubs i actually went to! didn't really like it but all my mates went (yes, we were under age). been back recently and it seems to have changed slightly for the better, but they now charge for the bands where they never used to. cheap enough drinks
Nialljm - 30 May 2006 00:09
Another pub which is probably best avoided on weekend nights when I have memories of the Police being called every Friday and Saturday evening without fail as, inevitably, fights broke out. Having said that the seating at the front is pleasant enough on a hot day during the summer, so if you're passing at a time like that it's not bad for a couple.
C.B - 11 May 2006 13:21
quite like how this pub started to take bands on properly cos you get a average/decent cheap pint and some bands...one my average pubs that i like to pop in every few months
Seantroll - 3 Mar 2006 16:04
Cheapish beer and a big screen for sports. Food isn't too bad either.

Had a decent night in there a few weeks ago when we found there was some live music out the back. I'd definitely go again if only because of that.

Had to complain about a few pints in there on a recent visit - a grumpy little barman poured some of the worst pints of lager I've seen in a long, long time.
brodie_bruce - 31 Jan 2006 13:04
eddie to refer to yourself as the sexiest barman around says nothing for the others, please don't forget that previous employees still read these comments and i'm sure john or gerry wouldn't be happy to hear what you've written considering the fact you will need a reference soon when finnegans gets sold.
homer2 - 12 Nov 2005 20:22
Ok it's a bit of a dump but it has it's uses. Chief among these is it's an excellent pub to watch live sport, particularly football as it's one of the few pubs in the Ealing area to bother with Sky Prem Plus (handy if you're not a Man Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal supporter). On top of this the food is absurdly cheap and tastes ok (usual pub fayre - chips with everything). The drinks are also very reasonably priced, making this a good place to start an evening. On the minus side theres not a great selection (not a place for the real ale enthusiast), it's kind of dingy and it's very popular with younger drinkers which might not suit everyone. Stil on the whole not bad at all.
scousemouse - 26 Sep 2005 14:40
pure arse! full of kids and the food is terrible, the beer tastes like they haven't pulled the cleaning solution through the pipes properly and its a no go area for non smokers.
bernard2504 - 22 Sep 2005 11:27
i dont know where to start im over the moon that john and jerry have finneys. and all i can say is good riddens adios. Finneys has turned around with new manager Alex, its not a youth club anymore thanx to him. And they still have there sexy assistant manager eddie, the best barman in ealing.
anonymous - 14 Aug 2005 13:52
Went on Friday afternoon for the first time in a few months and it seemed much improved, maybe it was the time I was there and the weather but there was a good atmosphere out in the beer garden, and the beer was good.
donrens - 29 May 2005 12:45
Hi to everyone at Finnegans, how's life without John, and is Eddie still there or have they caught him yet? Best wishes to all from your old friends Gerry, Sylvia, and baby Marie-Isabella
Homer1 - 13 May 2005 18:39
There are so many far, far better pubs in Ealing than this.
h2005 - 6 Dec 2004 13:07
We think ye old finneys is fantabulous. We go every day. We love it n every1 in it!!! But, stop letting pervs in.
Mandy - 17 Nov 2004 10:36
This pub used to known as the Queen Vic many moons ago, now its just an other o'rish theme pub and not a very good one at that.

sarah b.... , - 2 Sep 2004 01:13
Im sorry Laura but I agree with Lou on this one. I have lived in Ealing for over 10 years and this is the worst I've seen it ..... perhaps your thinking of another pub?!
I was in a couple of weeks ago and had to walk straight out as they were disgusting and I definitely cant see any sign of a refurb ..... although that place is crying out for one.
As for being the best pub in Ealing, I really am surprised. Its dark, dingy, smelly, unfriendly (bar staff), there's absolutely no atmosphere about the place and the food really isnt that great (although it is cheap).
I dont tell lies and will always tell the truth to help others (isnt that the point of this site). 'Finneys' poor and no persuasion will change my mind!

yvonne - 31 Aug 2004 16:24
hi i was just about to say something, about this pub, having read the last comment about the toilets, this is certainly not true, the toilets have been re-furbed recently, they are really nice and clean,in the past ,yes they were bad,not now check it out,i and my friend sarah are always in finneys, plz dont chat lies.be honest, finneys is the best pub in ealing by far .always our no.1,,no matter wot the rules are, john and ed are buff, john keep up D J on tues and thurs, its better than weekend,u must see more money in till.
laura , charlotte,and sarah,. - 28 Aug 2004 02:04
I visited Finnegans Wake last weekend and to say I was disappointed just wouldnt cut it. I was amazed that a visit to the bar took about 20mins to order 4 drinks. I didnt expect to have to explain what a pint of Shandy and a Gin and Tonic was and I certainly didnt think I would ever get the opportunity to show bar staff how much of a measure to put in.
Surely basic understanding of the language and serving alcohol should be high on the priority list when running such a bar.

With this lack of knowledge for running a pub, it should have come as no surprise to see the state of the ladies toilets. On one of the sunniest days in the year, the carpet was absolutely saturated, both toilets where blocked, one with about 20 fag butts, which I can only imagine was from emptying ashtrays down it - presumably by the bar staff. They clearly hadnt been cleaned in a very long time. The mouldy smell in the cubicles was enhanced by a wet toilet roll on the floor that was jamming one of the doors, and was actually covered in green mould. The smell of the whole place was damp and dirty. I appreciate that this is a pub and will inevitably have the odour of alcohol and cigarettes, but for what could be such a bright and airy place I can go as far as saying it was intolerable and disgusting.
Lou W - 27 Aug 2004 14:59
hi i and my friend have been away for three weeks in south of france,we were in finnegans friday night,o m god no more young people, the place was packed, but everyone was much much older, alot of new faces,,good to see, finnegans is our pub,new bouncers are so cool.we like new cocktail menu its cool, the place looks cleaner, toilets much improved, john maybe you should be on the door more often or eddi.plz keep out the young rude boyz, rating 10/10...
holly and charlotte - 15 Aug 2004 14:49
fins is a good pub, it has its moments of being annoying, and at the same time you can have to the best night, the staff are friendly to a point, but the lines do need cleaning. the new drinks prices are great, if your lookin for a bloke, don't bother in her as they are all arrogent gangsta wannabes and have no respect for anyone or thing, its a great place to watch sport but get there early if you want to sit down as it is always rammed. i have had to amazing days and nights in fins. the atmosphere when englands playing is the best i have ever experience ( other than the real thing) for once there is a sence of national pride, strange its in an irish pub!!! All in all, its a great place with lots of loveble characteristics.
anonymous - 3 Aug 2004 15:05
finneys is definately going through a transformation stage, ive been on hols.for 2 weeks, come back to new pub,new lower prices, new toilets ,much older crowd,i said to john the manager ,is this still finneys,i thought i was in a different pub, our drinks were much cheaper ,it looked alot brighter, well done john and ed,much buff, keep up da I,D, as well.it is now best venue around.plz put more ROCK MUSIC in da bar, 10/10.
anonymous - 15 Jul 2004 19:03
finnigans is the best pub no matter wat the rules. no1 listen to theses people they dont no wat there talkin bout
baby c - 6 Jul 2004 20:25
fukin excellent.. this pub is on it's way to being decent again.18yr olds with i.d get in no problem and the new 21's policy means customers who can actually afford to drink here.
who knows they might even go back to putting decent rock music on the channels. buisness should improve as old regulars start coming back.
flea - 17 Jun 2004 11:37
Over 21s??? that is madness. They'll probably only except O.A.Ps next
booooooo - 17 Jun 2004 00:29
compleatly agree with the others. finnies used to be, by far the best pub in eailing, nut not anymore. come on jerry u want all your regulars back dont you???
emma - 15 Jun 2004 21:07
Over 21s only? Most stupid decision ever surely? Most of the regulars were 18/19 or so, why change things? Change it back and soon, because this place is going to die a death which would be a great pity because it was always great on a night out. Go back to how it was.
Mark - 5 Jun 2004 23:41
wtf ova 21s?? this is shite, fins is gonna get no business whatsoever.Im 18 and was a local there when it was really good, now me and my mates have moved on to another area all together. Fins used to have a good atmosphere but no way mate not no more unless u go back to before.
thomas - 29 May 2004 19:04
Over 21s? Why exactly? All the young kinds couldnt get in so it was good, and now us over 18s cant go? If ur trying to get over21s ur gonna struggle, cos there are way too many over 21 places in Ealing, n finns def aint the best. soz but not good
Cath - 27 May 2004 21:10
lived near here 95-98, watched Euro 96 here, still remember getting home early from work to grab a place inside for the semi. remember the lads with the flags outside on the mini roundabout after England beat spain... car horns tooting. happy days. 8 years ago (jesus christ...)
And it was THE QUEEN VIC! finnegans bollox , it's the queen vic and always will be.

David - 18 May 2004 01:59
Terrible. This pub claims to cover all major sporting events on two giant screens and a multitude of smaller screens. Unfortunately that claim doesn't include Nationwide playoff finals. Despite there being a near empty pub, they refused to change the channels from MTV claiming the game was "not an advertised event". (Eh?) Despite it being Sunday lunchtime 1pm, there was next to no-one in the pub, yet the bar staff seemed happy to keep MTV on to a completely empty pub despite their inaccurate claims outside. Needless to say, our group left without buying anything. No real ale in this pub that we could see.
Martin - 16 May 2004 19:44
good pub good atomosphere beta than mos ...
anonymous - 30 Apr 2004 14:36
been going to finns since i was 14, now 19, actually preferred previous management because it always seemd friendlier and more relaxed. weird how u dont see all the regulars anymore- guess we're all at uni- do the hanging baskets til play- they were overrated. but keep the live bands not the djs cos theres got to be somewhere for the bands. john needs to remember that hes in london not ireland and people can wear rangers shirts wherever they like. luvly pub tho with wicked memories, please dont refurbish itd never be the same- its the most legendary pub in ealing without a doubt, dont spoil it.
dhaoei - 31 Mar 2004 14:06
i think that finnegans is good but they need to sort out some of the boys that think they are 18 when there only about 15 years of age. other than that i enjoy it, i see all my friends, the sexy rugby players that go there and have a really good time, also they do need to sort out the toliets.
Hana D - 24 Mar 2004 14:57
Bit of a dive really, plus they asked me for ID..... im 25 !! Didnt know whether to take it as a compliment or what. When i got in there you could see why they needed to do it ... full of kids. Plus dont ever have sunday lunch in there it is well and truelly minging ... go to the rose and crown
kat - 10 Mar 2004 13:06
the new bouncer natasha seems really nice, bout time finnies got sum friendly bouncers. p.s saturday was a very gd nite indeed!!!
marcus - 1 Mar 2004 18:26
Was there on Saturday. Everyone i saw was definitely over 18. Good pub.
Mark - 29 Feb 2004 19:23
Why are regulars getting turned away? John, jerry and Eddie, r u looking for new clientale? fix up the girls loos.
GOOD PUB
K and S xxxxxxx - 28 Feb 2004 13:01
Used to be great, now terrible. Bouncers are too strict and it's dead. It's going to lose everyone who ever frequented it, sort it out.
P.S. Two of my mates didn't get let in tonight and they are 20.
Sam - 27 Feb 2004 23:14
Have to take back my prior comments labelling this an "excellent pub", went on Saturday and it was appalling, bouncers extremely rude and generally ruined the atmosphere, asking people obviously over 18 for ID, one bloke who'd probably just been at work in a suit even got stopped! The Saturday prior to last one it was packed, this Saturday nearly the complete opposite, this pub is going to the dogs. Find some new bouncers and use some common sense.
Dave - 26 Feb 2004 21:05
Me n all my mates fink finnegans is 1 of da best places 2 go if u wnat gud music, a nice atmosphere and a generally gud time, all the people there are really friendly and John Jerry n Eddie r really safe, keep up da good work!!
samantha - 22 Feb 2004 22:56
I think Finnegans is reaaaaaally good, but on behalf of me and all of my friends, please make the girls toilets nicer!!!!!
Katy - 22 Feb 2004 22:33
Whats happened!! Why is it so strict.About 3/4 of the usaul Finnegans lot weren't allowed in and hovered outside. I mean, my boyfriend (22) was ID'd! Ok, ID the blatent 14 year olds in their belts and crop tops, but at least let the ones that look 18 in! And yes, i had the "pleasure" of meeting that bald man too on Friday evening, he was lovely...not! he was so rude, "ID" and i said " i dont think i have it!" (im 20 yeah!) and he replied "well get lost then" as it was, i had my drivers license and so got in, but what!? All the young girls ( i have no clue how old, possibly 17/18 year olds, they looked about that anyway) were being questioned, and they were all complaining "we never need ID" which is true, my younger sister whos just turned 18 never needed ID neither did I, so Finnys lot, you could have warned us! Anywho, i had a good time, it was empty for a Saturday night though, with a group of very loud old teenagers at one table, couldn't really watch the rugby in peace, too much high pitched whistling of some sort? Also, they kept smashing glasses (on purpose or not) it was annoying, surely if you made them pay they may break less!??! Oh well, if they're having a good time!!
Basically Finnegans is a FANTASTIC pub, now the really young ones aren't there and its mainly 17 and 18 year olds its much more bearable. If you want a laugh, watch some good music channels, chat to John and Gerry, eat some nice food, drink some good beer, then here's the place to be!! Students every Tuesday aswell if great, special offers on drinks!! just two things i have to say, 1-Please teach your bouncers some manners, and 2-PLEASE, im BEGGING you, clean the toilets, fix the hole in the door in the ladies loos and put some central heating in the loo by the dance area and a mirror would be much appreciated!!!
Everyone come here next saturday, will be very good, garuantee it!

Great for and 17 and 18 year olds.below that u wont get in and above that u wont enjoy it.PROS-lively atmosphere, live band and hard working waitresses.CONS- boys thinking they are from the ghetto, bouncers becoming power hungry and an array of ex-pulls there every saturday.jerry keeps it all together tho and makes it a good night out.bring ID

I was at Finnegans yesterday, and wow, how empty it was! I turned up to find some new bald guy IDing literally EVERYONE and turning everyone away, walking around ealing all you see was rejected Finnegans clientale.I also noticed that guys were walking in no problem?? And allthe girls questioned? There was a guy there called Amer there, year BELOW me, and go in no questions, unyet my mates and i all got IDd, i had my ID so it was no problem, but i can't help thinking its TOO strict, it was so empty. I bet if Finnegans has halved its takings, do they want to have shut down or something? I feel so bad for these poor 17 year olds, where are they meant to go?! They were all going into the Cafes, what a wasted night out (yes i can relate with all those rejected 17 year olds, i was there only a few months ago) and it SUCKS! and least Finnegans is a bit more lenient. I was really disappointed yesterday, it was positively boring, the people were either 18/19 )and there went that many!) or OLD! You've lost the custom of my mates now...mainly because we were all ID'd after never having a problem, and the fact boys just walked in. I'll come back when the bald guy goes, he was just plain rude. John and Jerry, you guys are lovely, the safest guys, but we're thinking ditch these new bouncers???

we are regular visitors during the day, we always have what has become known in the 'in' crowd as a ccb, aka a chicken cheese and bacon melt. we both agree that we have never had a better meal anywhere ever! the chicken is thoroughly cooked, but not burned, the bacon is not too crispy yet not too soft, and cheese is melted perfectly... the chips are as always delicious, the only quibble we have is the peas... they get everywhere, even in the folds of the chicken. however, this is a minor flaw as the pub is cool, good food, good drink, good pool. in fact, we're just leaving uni to go there now, to enjoy a classic ccb...
CCB! CCB! CCB!

Excellent pub was there on Saturday and the atmosphere was great inside, top night had there, probably the best pub i've been to in Ealing. Saw a couple of people who were quite obviously over 18, if not even over 21, being asked for ID and not even being let in, so maybe the doormen are being too strict now...i mean fair enough ask the kids but use a bit of common sense eh? Otherwise a top pub.
Dave - 16 Feb 2004 18:04

JOHN (general manager @ finnegans )in response to the recent comments made over the xmas and new year period its nice to know that we are getting some positave feedback for the effort that myself and my team put in to keep finneys the no 1. pub on the circuit,i have a very strict door policy put in place with my new door security team . photo i.d. is a must. pls have it ready upon arrival at the door to save queueing up.keep comments comin in but pls be realistic no nonsence. Thanks,.
john(general manager @ finnegans ) - 17 Jan 2004 14:41
great pub, great bands but please john. please...... clean the pipes. i cant wait to see ur ideas for refurbishment. but be careful dont lose the irish charm. thats part of the finnegans experience. PLUS COngrats on gettin rid of the Rugrats. the place is a lot better with the restrictions. but easy on its starting to look tighter than wormworths scrubs. and please dont go over 21. please.............

Over the christmas holiday this pub has to be crowned the best in ealing. It was boo shank. All the staff there are quality and try there best to kep out those pesky kids. I waited over a hour to get in on newyears eve, and that kinda annoyed me, but im not complaining because when I got in I had a really good night, the music was proper good and the garage DJ was boom!! I just felt sorry for all those people who were left outside on the door, you should have come earler, ha ha , :o)

In respect to the comment made by faith,we would like to mention that we will only accept legal Identification,eg orginal passports or driving licences, not the fake ID's you can buy on the internet for 10,for example the national identity card that always gets produced at our pub! this is becoming really annoying and I cant beleive that you think we are all that stupid? if you have correct ID then show it to us and we will let you in. (Faith,if you can produce the correct ID,then we will give u a free drink)Kevin John Gerry Edmond

I came 2 have a fun 19th birthday evening and i was checked for i.d, so showed my i.d and they turned me away and said that i couldn't come in!That was very unfair!
Faith - 30 Dec 2003 19:45
I think Sylvia the bar manager is really fit and sexy, although she needs to slow down as she always seem to be rushing around.
anonymous - 30 Dec 2003 12:45
I think that the music was really good on xmas eve, it made a change from hearing a band :o) I really do love the bands that come, but I just wanted to say that I think its great that finnegans is such a diverse pub, and all sorts of people drink there, me and my friends really enjoy drinking there, we are like part of the family there, its a great atmosphere, and we love the staff as well, john is well sweet, only problem is that it can just get busy at times on the bar on fri and sat nights, lol, Rachel xxx
Rachel - 30 Dec 2003 11:23
Used to be a great pub especially on a Friday night before it metamorphasised into a youth club; its full of immature kids who think they are in the playground now; hopefully one day it will get itself together.

Ted - 23 Dec 2003 20:22
Finnegans is a heavy pub to go to, nuff buff chics in der and gud pool tables. Respect to managers, bouncers and all that goes in there!
Gunnersbury Guy - 23 Dec 2003 02:18
wHEN I USED TO GO WHEN I WAS YOUNGER IT WAS GOOD BUT NOW THEIR ARE TOO MANY UNDER AGE TEENAGERS THERE. THEY NEED A GOOD CLEAN(THE PUB) AND THEY NEED TO SORT THEMSELVES OUT. OTHER THAN THAT IT IS A GOOD PUB WITH A BRILLIANT ATMOSPHERE AND WITHOUT FAIL THE BEST MUSIC. FIX UP!
anonymous - 20 Nov 2003 14:55
finnegans although well situated is lacking cleanliness and is mobbed by young teenagers. most of the girls enjoy dressing like slags and the boys simply think their bad. i have drawn the conclusion that finnegans is not the place for hygenic over 18 year olds and i strongly suggest the managers do something about the digusting state off the loos.
anonymous - 11 Nov 2003 14:33
Oh my God......this pub is so quality!! Those pesky kids have been removed so its boo shank!! Johna and Gerry have got things under control now and Ed (the rufian) has been hectic too. Any who Shivon is bea buff...luv ya!
Dave - 3 Nov 2003 21:15
all i can ask is when did you last clean your beer lines, or your bar, or your kitchen, no seriously clean the pub
Will Gordon (Rep) - 2 Nov 2003 20:13
Finnegans is a good pub to go to for a good night out. Since the last time i went there, the amount of young ones has dramatically dropped. I observed the bouncers on the friday night that i went and they asked for ID off every person. It has a nice atmosphere but not a great place to go to if you're looking for a quiet drink!
Lucy - 6 Oct 2003 20:05
This Pub is the best by a long stretch!! John and Gerry are really cool!! loads of cool cats that go!! thafe to all the regulars...and keep up the good work ed!! P.s there is bea buff gals dem!!
Dave - 25 Sep 2003 22:25
Finnegans wake is the best pub in west London by miles. It is a young persons venue, but everybody is over 18, John the manager and the doorstaff are so strict on the id's. The staff are great simply the best pub in ealing, John & Gerry keep up the good work. Edmond (Seamus)
Edmond - 25 Sep 2003 01:13
this pub is the best pub i have been in to in a long time. At first i thought it would be full of kids but i came and that was all a rumour. Its great on a friday night the band give it such a good atmosphere. John and Gerry are lovely and make you feel right at home. love me x x x
claire - 24 Sep 2003 15:28
finnegans is the best pub in ealing by far lots of lovley ppl to meet. John has got rid of all the kids so there is no need to worry any more. They are a lot tighter on the I.Ds now. Its a great pub, and the managers and bar maids are lovely. u 2 Igor. lol. love the 2 regulars. c.k n f.r
f.r - 24 Sep 2003 15:25
This pub is well cool i go here every Friday.........loads of nice ladies to meet and also SHOUT OUT TO THE BOUNCERS (ritchie and Mickey) and also JOHN AND GERRY
Dave - 23 Sep 2003 20:32
I went here once, but i thought I'd slipped into some sort of strange parallel dimension where everyone was a dwarf... then I realised it was actually a nursery school for drunken 10 year old cockneys!... Good pub though!...will definately go back!
Mart - 6 Sep 2003 14:00
my girlfriend actually got asked for id in this place ,she's 25 ..i then tore a few strips off the bouncer for being so blind.
got an apology so result,eyyy
maz - 2 Sep 2003 13:52
Mobbed beyond belief when the footie's on. Quite pleasant on a quiet midweek evening.

Sounds like an extension of the local secondary school now though.
Ruby - 19 Jul 2003 16:59
Absolutely the best pub in the World for watching big football matches. I've never seen England lose a game here! Great fun place, but can get very packed. Not expensive but the toilets are grim. There used to be this stunning blonde behind the bar with big jugs but haven't seen her for ages. Shame.
chopperbomb - 17 Jul 2003 17:45
Full of students though good live band on the last Saturday I was there. Good place to watch live sport from if memory serves me right.
Gary - 28 Apr 2003 12:01
Yates had a couple of good DJ's on Comic relief night instead of the normal piped music - why dont they have more regular live DJ's?
Even if they charged a 1 to get in, it would be worth it!
Barry bates - 15 Apr 2003 15:20
full of little kids, i'm sure we were the only over 18 people in there. still, it managed to seem like a decent enough place despite all that.
