Rising Sun, Hampton Hill

back to pub details

user reviews of The Rising Sun, Hampton Hill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A bit of a restaurant - all tables laid for dining on a Sunday. A nice pint of Proper Job IPA though. Staff nice as well. Good atmosphere also.
rainlight - 6 Dec 2015 18:59
Not bad. Probably the best pub in Hampton Hill. Quite expensive but very well maintained. Ales were good.
Tourmalet - 2 May 2015 17:11
I am as previous posts claim one of the chav vile scum that went to the Sun a few years back, I even worked there, the place was never a run down dive, it was a place to enjoy yourself and have a laugh (I cant comment on the fights) as I was never involved but I will always love the Sun for what it was and what it stood for
Liannekaren - 20 Feb 2012 02:08
Intersting place which also serves food. Traditional pub layout and white, well looked after interior. Only been in a couple of times but seems to have quite a few events on. Family friendly and you could do far worse if you're in the High St and fancy a beer. Abbot on draught.
thehonesttruth - 4 Nov 2011 22:40
{{{ sigh }}} Im not getting into a war over a watering hole with a complete stranger who obviously cannot use a computer properly as if u had of done u would of seen I have reviewed many pubs and yours was not the first and only one unlike some people who only seem to comment on the rising sun.
I did detect the sarcastic tone but I gather u did not pick up on mine but I would not expect that from someone who clearly contradicts themselves and can't decide whether they are talking about a pub they visit or maybe something more.
I am allowed to remark on the bad experience I had at the sun and if that offends people then they really do need to fix the problems so customers are happy !!
Customer service and customers ( full stop ) are what keeps a business in business so should be priorty. Simple as.
zippy78 - 10 Jun 2011 18:15
Nothing curious about me registering to make a comment about a pub - after all, I AM ENTITLED TO MY OPINION!! Unfortunately I haven't got time to spend reviewing pubs all day, or drinking in them every day for that matter.
I certainly would pay more to drink and eat in a place like the Rising Sun rather than drink in a Weatherspoons (you obviously didnt detect my sarcastic tone). Who would want to pay 2.99 for a crappy dinner and a watered down pint??? The quality is hardly the same! If you drink and eat in the local area you would know that this is not the most expensive place to do either....mind you I don't see any other pubs in the vicinity that you have reviewed......
You are quite right we are all entitled to our opinions, your opinion is just different to mine. I do look forward to hearing your reviews though when the Bloated Mallard opens on the High St in August.
'Its good to talk'.

honeybee26 - 10 Jun 2011 16:55
Yet another posting from a one off user..... how curious.
A vendetta ..... What an odd comment to make from a simple mere drinker of the rising sun, like myself !!
Am i not allowed to comment on this pub because i have faults with it.
Everyone has their own opinion and mine is that this pub is far from the pub that these "one time posters" has bigged it up to be.
I am entitled to my opinion and my opinion is that this pub started out with so much potential but is now driving away custom with problems i cannot go into on this site without offending certain people !!
So as for the "weatherspoons" comments..... are u saying that people should pay more to drink in the rising sun ?? WHY !??! Because u have just contradicted yourself by saying your food and drink is not over-priced and is value, but then advising me to eat and drink at a weatherspoons as its cheap?!? Why should the drinks and food in the rising sun be SO much more when the quality is the same as a weatherspoons, if that.
The regulars and locals were excited when the owners took over and transformed the rising sun but gradually its been going downhill and the regulars are going elsewhere ( probably to weatherspoons as u said for a bit of atmosphere !! ) and this poor ole boozer is suffering.
Such a shame its dying.

zippy78 - 9 Jun 2011 20:50
I'm not sure I would agree with the last comment posted. This pub has changed dramatically, an improvement in my opinion, from what it used to be, including the calibre of its customers. Who wants loud mouthed drunken idiots and fights at the end of a friday night when you just want a fun night out.
Most people will know that if you eat in the local area, the food in this pub is not overpriced and in my opinion is definately value for money and has always been very good when I have eaten there. The staff that work in the pub are excellent and always make you feel welcome, and when it is quiet (as a lot of pubs are during the day) the bar staff take the time to talk to you - a bonus when visiting on your own.
Judging by the popular quiz night and new curry night plus the local sports teams that have started drinking there I would hardly say that this pub is going down hill.
Of course this website is all about people giving their opinions however I get the feeling from what was said that the last comment may have been from a person with a vendetta. (If you want cheap grub/drink you go to your local Wetherspoons........... they are always good for atmosphere!)
The only way you will know if this pub is any good or not is if you try it out for yourself!
honeybee26 - 9 Jun 2011 17:28
Whats happened to freedom of speech ??
Thought this site was about opinions and review of pubs.
So unless a pub gets a good review then it gets removed !??!?! huh ?!?!
made an honest review of this pub and it was removed as it was ...... ahem reported.... reported for telling the truth.

Once again here is a review of this pub......

Ordered food and it was overpriced and slung in front of me with no thank you. Food was ok but not for the money i paid.
Pub is dead in the day and IN MY OPINION shouldn't bother opening till evening.
Even then then evening is also dead and the only good crowd was on a friday for karaoke but now that has been cut to once a fortnight.
The drinks are more expensive than other surrounding pubs but its worth paying extra if u enjoy the silence and your own company. But then again u could sneak a drink into the local library and u would have a better time.
One thing i like about local pubs is a warm friendly welcome u expect as a regular in your local but have never felt that in this pub and its a shame. In 2 years apart from a certain friendly red headed barmaid who always made me feel pleased i popped in, i was never treated with good customer service at all.... and thats the truth and MY OPINION which i am entitled to make.
its really going downhill and losing regulars fast !!!

zippy78 - 8 Jun 2011 22:00
It's been a little while since we visited the Rising Sun, but having popped by this weekend, I am so glad to see that the pub continues to thrive, even during these tricky times.

Fish and chips were delicious, and my husband remarked that the range of draught has vastly improved, (Staropramen, San Miguel and Peroni).

Is it really two years already since the new owners took over? It's an absolute jem everyone! Keep up the good work!!!
astralstar - 17 Apr 2011 19:19
Yes, the interior is as bright and cheerful as the photo suggests. Relatively quiet when popped in but a decent atmosphere prevailed and the girl behind the bar was very polite and pleasant.

You can have either your GK IPA from the North (cream flow) or the South (traditional), something I've never seen before and given it's opposite Bushy Park it's none too pricey either. Will pop in again if around the area, probably on a crawl from the Roebuck.
Oakman100 - 5 Apr 2011 18:40
Still going from strength to strength. The menu has been re-vamped and is a winner! Went in for the shooting star night.....great night out and for a great cause.
highstreetdrinker - 14 Oct 2010 14:24
try the posh fish finger sandwich! yummy! great pub, nice people, lovely atmosphere! Fridays nights are real fun with karaoke! everyone joins in even if they don't have a mic in their hand!

ukddm70 - 6 Aug 2010 17:20
The Rising Sun is a transformed gem compared to the pit it was previously. Locals are now welcome, people are friendly and the place is beautifully presented; everything is never was before. Sunboss and his team are putting their heart and soul in making this the very best pub in the area - and are doing are wonderful job. It may be a little refined for some but that's fine; frankly they can take their lager stained football shirts and scuttle off somewhere else.
MutleyMan - 18 Jul 2010 21:32
Good Karaoke night on Friday. Enjoyed it and took me back as the same guy who used to do em down the road. Thanks guys for a good night, sorry about my singing though.
HamptonBoozer123 - 23 Jun 2010 12:52
Having been a regular to the Rising Sun for years i was saddened when it was taken over and new owners arrived ... I expected the worst from new ownership but did atleast give the new guys a chance ... It may miss some of the certain charms that the old Rising Sun had but i can hand on heart say the new owners Neil and Shaun have done a fantastic job in rejuvenating the place - nice decor and new seating etc have really brightened the place up ..... Add to that excellent food, a great atmosphere and various themed nights - Friday night Karaoke is an excellent night out - and you really do have a good pub ... I seriously have no negatives ... Excellent establishment
actionman150982 - 17 Jun 2010 15:04
Went in again for Sunday lunch 02/04/10. The food and service goes from strength to strength ! Well done.
highstreetdrinker - 4 May 2010 21:18
Went in this pub with a group of friends and was really impressed with the improvement. It was friendly and welcoming.

pheeney - 21 Mar 2010 00:19
Dear Woohoo78, I am sorry to hear that your most recent visit to the Rising Sun did not meet the expectations of both parties. All of our staff are trained to be attentive and sympathetic to our customers needs and therefore I am pleased to hear that you did experience this, although it would appear perhaps they were slightly eager on this occasion. May I take this opportunity to ask for a little more information, such as the date and approximate time of your visit and I will speak to the staff on duty at that time, both in the bar and in the kitchen to ascertain what happened, leading to your disappointment. It is a real shame that you felt that you were unable to bring this matter to our attention on the day itself as we would have been only too happy to help put things right at the time. Sadly that was not to be. However, I would be only too happy to discuss this matter with you in person and hopefully rectify any negativity you may feel towards the pub's food service. Please feel free to call in anytime to discuss it.
sunboss - 18 Mar 2010 18:23
First went in here when taken over, looked great and the food was great. In fact I may even have posted a comment about it on here at that time some months back.
However, went back here recently one evening with friends and the food much different. The sausages and mashed potato: sausage tasted like it was cheap and nasty from a supermarket value range and the mashed potato tasted like it had been microwaved. One friend had a burger and chips and both tasted dry and the burger was tough. Also the area we sat in was very cramped and far too small for the amount of tables in that part of the pub.
Was asked three times in 10 minutes if our food was okay, which caused us to be even more concerned, was afraid to say anything due to some of the locals who were glaring from the bar area!
I suppose you could ask what do you expect for the prices of the food here, but I may as well have just got the same food from the supermarket and cooked it at home, it would have been cheaper and less hassle!

woohoo78 - 16 Mar 2010 21:36
Went in here once, was years ago was like going into a local pub for locla people and even though I am local I felt bad for being there...but looking at these images I might go in tonight!! looks totally different :-)
fulltummy - 11 Dec 2009 14:53
Man_on_ground: Were we even in the same pub? I've been to several of the karaoke events at the Rising Sun and I think they are brilliant! I even noticed that the old Karaoke guy had turned up to have a sing! Maybe the fact that all your previous messages on here relate to Karaoke are a pure coincidence, or maybe you are the other Karaoke guy? Who knows! Looking forward to the final guys... is it true that a famous record producer is one of the judges?
astralstar - 8 Dec 2009 10:54
Well, its nice to see a local pub doing good & they seemed to have found a niche in the market but the manager is one miserable looking gezzer! (sorry, say it as I see it) & what has happened to the karaoke? "Flat tone" I think he called himself? More like "Flatlined"! Had about as much carisma as a flat hedgehog! Get the defib out! No interaction with the customers, no lights to brighten it up, the sound was terrible & when the big guy got up to sing he nearly blew the pub speakers off the wall, in fact the man came & told him to turn off the mike (to be honest he sounded better without it) You cant run a system through cheap speakers like that. Turns out it was a heat for a final in a competition, was the judge deaf? The 5 menu is very good I hear although I have not tryed it yet. Now im not saying that this is a bad pub, its not . . When all around are dying or dead its refreshing to see a pub doing well but I do get the impression that unless you fall into that "Niche" you may never really fit in.
Man_on_ground - 6 Dec 2009 10:22
Once again this pub goes from strength to strength. Sunday lunch is the best in the area, really fresh and cooked to your liking. Its not often you are asked how you would like your roast beef. My preference is rare and I got the most delicious rare beef. My wife asked for well done and she got it to her liking. Well done for your attention to detail and keep up the good work!
highstreetdrinker - 19 Oct 2009 20:20
Had lunch in here Sunday, it was very good. Place has had quite a makeover which was from memory long overdue. Looks like they are doing lots of entertainment taking over from where the old Jenny Lind left off, good idea as since the Jenny's close this has been missing from the high street. Good to see some old familiar faces from the past.
HamptonBoozer123 - 12 Oct 2009 09:53
What a change now that this pub has been taken over. Food is fantastic, cannot believe the value for money and it was genuinley home cooked! Nice atmosphere with pleasant and friendly staff. Definitley moved on from the time we walked in here around a year ago and felt that we were going to get attacked by the local thugs or deafened by the banging music! It's great to have a nice pub to go to in the high street now when so many of them are going hill rapidly in the area. Definitley recommend it and will be back again soon!
woohoo78 - 26 Sep 2009 19:37
Dear sunboss - thank you for your response. I had actually asked the facilitators of this site to remove my comment the following day, but unfortunately, this is proving difficult. I completely understand that you have to abide by the law and can only apologise for my previous review. It was simply how I felt at the time, although I had had a very good night. I vow never to review a pub again whilst I have been drinking! I will also never post negative reviews of pubs in the future and will instead 'vote with my feet' and find elsewhere to drink (I'm all in favour of pubs - good and not so good, staying open at all costs, especially in this difficult financial climate). Please accept my sincerest apologies and I hope that my comment does not effect your future business. You have done wonderful things with the pub and I wish you all the best for the future. I will ask again for this comment to be removed as soon as possible. TO ALL OTHER USERS - the fact that this manager has taken the time to respond to my negative comment is evidence that he is obviously passionate about his business and also interested in what his customers have to say - please do not let my previous sway you. You should always take the time to visit an establishment and make your own mind up as everything on here is just a personal opinion and entirely subjective, after all. Many thanks.
foxxymoron - 5 Sep 2009 00:58
Dear Foxxymoron, as manager of the Rising Sun, I will always allow my customers to wait for a taxi within the pub. With closing time on a Saturday at 12.30am and drinking up time at 1.00am I will reasonably allow customers to wait a short time after this. Your taxi had still not arrived by 1.30am and as Im sure you can imagine, at the end of a busy Saturday, I do need to prepare the pub for Sunday lunch, clean, cash-up and of course get a few hours sleep. Closing the blinds and turning off the lights is a normal part of our closing procedure and it is therefore unfortunate that you feel that that you had been turfed out, but closing time had come and gone and I do have to abide by the law. Im sorry that you feel you were treated unreasonably.
sunboss - 4 Sep 2009 22:26
Been in a couple of nights this week to sample the 5 meals....fantastic !!!
A proper meal, 13 items to choose from and large portions for a fiver. Its cheaper and better (no disrespect to the wifes cooking) than eating at home. The pubs going from strength to strength which is great for the High Street................ Hey Foxy....I guess closing time is closing time and there is loads to do when the customers leave. Anyhow, sounds like you had a nice night
highstreetdrinker - 4 Sep 2009 10:00
Not a bad pub now. It's benefited from the re-fit and is actaully quite a cosy little boozer. I should imagine it'll be nice in the Winter if it lasts that long due to the current state of Hampton Hill. I swear I heard "GHOST TOWN "playing when I drove through the other night.

Good luck to them I reckon. The food is supposed to be nice but not tried it yet.

marchw - 2 Sep 2009 09:16
Unfortunately, just got home from this venue on a Saturday night. Regardless of my previous, was made to feel thoroughly uncomfortable and won't be going back to this venue again. It felt a bit like the owner could not wait to see us leave and this was made quite evident to us. Apart from asking us to wait outside whilst we were waiting for our cab, they also made a point of closing the blinds on us and switching the lights off as soon as we left, which really isn't what you would expect from a "classy" joint in Hampton Hill. A real shame as we had a really good night up until this and the staff here are extrememly friendly and accomadating most of the time. We will be going elsewhere on the weekend from now on, which I suppose will be no real loss as far as the owner is concerned, evidently, but a great shame as far as we are concerned as we had very high hopes for this place. Apparently, they do do a very nice Sunday lunch, which we have never sampled. Lets just hope it's not served with a side of attitude like we received tonight.
foxxymoron - 30 Aug 2009 02:15
Yeah! So much better. Karaoke is back on which really rocks . . BBQ is top notch and am looking forward to trying a sunday roast. Keep up the good work.
Man_on_ground - 7 Aug 2009 22:05
Went into the RS on Saturday for their "official" opening. What a fantastic night! The place was buzzing like a beehive. The singer / guitarist Jorge made the night extra special too!!!
astralstar - 21 Jul 2009 14:15
Call me suspicious but strange with a new landlord, suddenly a load of positive reviews mostly from brand new reviewers!!!..... strange, but fair play nothing like blowing your own trumpet! Stand by my comments but good luck to em...
HamptonBoozer123 - 13 Jul 2009 16:26
An amazing little pub, I was travelling in the area with work on Friday 10th July and popped in a very nice smart looking pub - had no idea then that I would be staying the weekend as such. The interior of the pub is lovely and bright, clean and airey. From talking to the locals, I discovered that the landlord is new to this establishment and has worked hard to put the Rising Sun back on the map.

The landlord, his staff even down to his old chubby potman are all very charming and all love to chat. Impressed as I was, I went back Saturday and ate, the weekend menu is very good, large portions and reasonably priced. I again returned on Sunday to try the Sunday roast, 7 for a great lunch.

My only regret is that I live over 60 miles away - now that I have discovered a perfect little pub. I urge all readers of this review to go to the Rising Sun and stay there well after sunset.
dcq40w - 12 Jul 2009 14:59
Visited this place for the first time in ages. I was not disappointed! The new landlord and staff were warm, friendly and made me feel welcome. The change here is for the better, and I can really recommend the Sunday lunch! 10 for main course and desert - cheaper than doing it at home! I'll be back before too long.....! Good luck to the new guys!
twicker - 7 Jul 2009 20:48
Back on the high street after a bit of a break and could not beleive the change here. It needed it. Can't comment on food but what i hear it is meant to be good, but always get the odd off day or odd off plate I guess. Hope these new people make a go of it with so many of the other locals either gone, going or should be going. Hard pressed to find a decent pint of bitter now in the high street though all seem to be the usual Pride which is like a house bitter, need some rural brewery stuff, perhaps these people can do that?
HamptonBoozer123 - 6 Jul 2009 14:53
Cannot understand the last comment about the food. My wife and I had Sunday lunch at the Rising yesterday and were really impressed. The other groups of diners also passed on their compliments to the kitchen staff. Great lunch, great atmosphere and great value.......seems like a great recipe to me. Best place in town to enjoy a night out.
highstreetdrinker - 6 Jul 2009 14:23
Have to agree that the place looks so much better than before, but could not look any worse to be honest. We went for Sunday dinner there after seeing all the recommendations. To be blunt we were disappointed, meat was dry, veggies a basic mush, gravy too thick, not good at all. They did seem a bit dis organised but perhaps it is early days who knows. Wish em well.
Ilikemybeer - 6 Jul 2009 11:28
I have only recently moved to the area and have visited several of the pubs in Hampton Hill. The Rising Sun is by far my favourite.

I did see the pub before its recent makeover and what used to be dingy, old fashioned and, to be honest, a bit rough, it now clean, bright and all round a very pleasant environment to spend your time and hard earned cash.

The new management are very friendly, eager to listen, and I'm deighted to say, keen to see the pub continue to improve and evolve. This change has obviously impressed some of the locals too as it is now busier than ever!!!!

I love it!!! 10 out of 10 from me!!!!
astralstar - 5 Jul 2009 14:37
first time visiting this pub and never went before the change in managment.

Great atmosphere, very relaxed and both staff & owners were very friendly

best of all, went for the sunday roast and it was great! really good value and would recommend to anyone to try.
batchelors8 - 1 Jul 2009 00:05
Regarding the previous comment, "not quite what the High Street is looking for..."...surely whatever happens it can't be any worse than it was before?! I think residents will certainly be breathing a sigh of relief. Having seen this establishment before and after I can say with some authority it is currently a vast improvement on what it was. Friendly staff, clean surroundings and a generally much improved atmosphere (no more drug deals in the loos and general distressing behaviour!!) this pub is a little piece of heaven in Hampton and highly recommended. I believe it is precisely what the High Street is "looking for" (as long as you aren't looking for sticky carpets, spittoons and yellow nets) and long may the current management reign. Good luck and best wishes.
foxxymoron - 28 Jun 2009 02:23
A breath of fresh air in the High street. Bright and airy with great staff who have many plans for the place. Such a fantastic change from the old dreary Rising sun.............thanks guys and keep it up
highstreetdrinker - 26 Jun 2009 16:37
Karaoke always went down well at the sun, they kept everyone on their feet and then put Scouse on last to clear the pub out at closing!! Have not been in since Steve left but can only hope that the new owners will have the good sence to keep the darts going and throw in a Karaoke every now and again . . Good luck with your new venture people . . .
Man_on_ground - 16 Jun 2009 17:39
Perhaps too early to tell but not quite what the high street is looking for. Might get better, decorating a bit too bright for a boozer.
Tippleman - 15 Jun 2009 13:40
On Friday 22nd May 2009, a new era began for the Rising Sun!

Now under new management, the Rising Sun is being transformed with a series of phased improvements and we very much hope that you will share this exciting time with us.

Phase one has now been completed with a fresh new look; a sympathetic facelift for this tired old lady, bringing her back into the 21st century.

Alongside the familiar beers and spirits you would expect to find in a traditional village pub, we have now introduced a delicious new range of International wines, perfect at the end of a busy day.

On Sunday 21st June 2009, we will also be introducing traditional, home-cooked British food, starting with the nation's pub favourite the Sunday roast!

It is our hope that we have begun to create a calm and welcoming environment where you can bring friends and loved ones to enjoy a drink, good food and friendly service in pleasant surroundings.

Your thoughts and suggestions are paramount to our future plans and with this in mind we invite you to email us at:

[email protected]

Those with the best suggestions will receive a voucher for a complimentary bottle of wine from our new range. (Ends 30th June 2009).

On behalf of Neil, Steve, Pat and myself, we very much look forward to welcoming you to the new look, new-style Rising Sun soon, to chat with us and help create what it likely to be a great new social chapter for residents of Hampton Hill and beyond!

Kindest regards and best wishes,

Shaun Hobson,
Manager

Under new management and all the better for it.
nickthefish - 8 Apr 2009 08:42
I met my girlfriend in this pub. It was a Thursday which is amazing as i usually goto other pubs on a Thursday. Met the new landlord today who seems like a really good guy. Will be going back again
dsuter - 3 Apr 2009 15:28
Warning just don't take loved ones especially after dark when the locals come out.....ever seen Deliverance....I can still see their faces and hear the banjo....and thats in the pub.Sunday roast....does he jest...I pushed my way through some drunken Chelsea fans over the din of the football to the bar to ask but the poor soul behind the bar just stared with incomprehension. The Setting sun must be soon for this pub.
james2 - 4 Oct 2008 05:59
Not too bad once you can work out its opening hours. Gone
past here after twelve on a weekday and no sign of life..mind you it can be like that even when open.
nickthefish - 6 Aug 2008 06:31
The Best Sunday Lunch by miles, no wonder you have to order in advance. well done for restoring my faith in home cooked pub food.
proper_pub_people - 20 May 2008 22:52
What was the point of having posters and flags in the windows to celebrate St Georges day if your going to be shut at 12:30!!!! Big mistake. Bad business sense.
lucy75 - 24 Apr 2008 10:58
Don't. I mean, just don't.
Dave_the_Bee - 11 Apr 2008 00:26
Its quite during the week but since they started using the old landlords from the jenny up the road to do Karaoke it has been a big hit. The locals can be a bit off if you are new but after a couple of visits and a chat with the landlord it has been a better experience. Things are getting better.
boozerman - 29 May 2007 16:32
Went in after 8 months, against my better judgement, to watch the Chelsea/Reading game.

And nothing's changed...

Rude, violent scum.
anonymous - 19 Oct 2006 00:05
Unremarkable locals pub on the High Street owned by Greene King, so the beer's a bit moderate. Didn't dislike the place, but if I was only doing one pub on this stretch of the High Street, it would be the Clarence and not this one
JohnBonser - 30 Aug 2005 12:37
builders pub... very loud music, manager very nice though.. shame about the regulars
