I would suggest that is a trifle over the top. Dont get me wrong, its a nice pub in a pleasant part of East Sussex. They serve decent beer, thats all Im really bothered about. The barmaid / landlady was very friendly and chatty to me and my two mates, all good.

I preferred the Robin Hood, Icklesham and the three of us all agreed on that, without question.

They do lovely Dark Star beers and Harveys is always on. Beer is always served in perfect condition. The bosses Lee and Ian know how to run proper pub. Bar staff are very good too. I wish the bar area was slightly more like a bar though as it is very much a foody pub now. That said, the 3 meals I have had in there have all been excellent. The gardens (front and back) are perfect for the kids and there is a playing field over the road so even more kid friendly. Brilliant pub.

A sensitively reconstructed interior, good ale, friendly staff, nice seating area. Had the ubiquitous Sussex Best on, and also Rother Valley Level Best, which I really enjoyed. Worth the wee pub crawl in Pett Village and Pett Level.

Reopened a month or so ago after a major refurbishment necessitated by the state the previous management left it in. As already stated, the team from the Queen's Head, Icklesham are now in charge.
Harvey's Best is 3 a pint and is, in my opinion the best to be found in any of the nearby local pubs. Certainly the clearest. 3 other beers on handpump including Old Speckled Hen and 1 of the Old Dairy brews.
Four of us had lunch there last Sunday. 3 roast beefs and 1 cod and chips. Generous portions and tasty food. The roasts were 8.95, can't recall the price of the fish, but with a drink apiece the bill was 50. Good value.
The place feels a bit "new" for a village local but that's because of the amount of work that was needed to restore it. No doubt the newness will wear off.
Highly Recommended

The Royal Oak is due to re-open any day now. It is true that a consortium took over the pub and they have done an extensive refurbishment. I used to live down the road from this pub and know it well. It has been gutted and refurbed to a high standard. The poeple who are doing the day to day running also have the Queens Head in Icklesham. I have spoken to one of them and asked that he get some nice real ales on. It will be opening any day now and will be doing food as well as usual lagers and real ales. I am due for a visit soon so will let you know how it went very soon. Peace. Out.

The pub was sold at auction a couple of months ago. Local press reports say the buyers are a consortium of local businessmen including the owner of the Queen's Head at Icklesham. So, watch this space for a re-opening in Spring 2011?

A pleasant enough place, but only two ales on.
Not wishing to run the place down, but it's got nothing to distinguish it from any other pub, and there's lots of good ones in the area.

Passed by many times on the drive to Hastings, we stopped for the first time at the weekend, a nice clean pub with an enjoyable atmosphere, we shall certainly return.

I enjoyed my visit here, I sat in the corner watching the world go by and enjoyed a good sandwich on lovely fresh bread, very pleasant.

The welcome from the young barmaid, Clare? was good as was the beers and wine, the meals were sub standard, the gammon steaks must have been sliced with a razor, they were so thin as to almost be transparent and the promise of real home made desserts was alluring but in realty they were bloody awful, we will try again though, maybe it was just a bad day.

Good beer here, not overly great food though... the building is an interesting layout and if it's en route worth a visit but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

Nice pub in a very rural location, staff are friendly and the welcome was good, the ales are definitely well kept with good line cleaning practises obviously in place. The food was poor to middling, service slow but pleasant. there are better places to dine locally.

Super country pub in a rural setting with views over the valley to the cilffs at Fairlight. Excellents bars, and service, with a menu of home-cooked food to rival any quality restaurant. I visit the area frequently to walk the surrounding countryside and beaches. Delightful.
