Always busy, which makes for a great atmosphere. Always seems to be full of proper old school drinkers. Often stay in one of the nearby hotels and always make a point of popping in.

The Stanhope is a good solid pub. Pleasant staff, nice decor, good beer and a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a post work pint.
Went in here with friends a few weeks ago - Actually really liked it! Went in on a whim as we were on the tube and deicded to jump off at Gloucester Rd as we had never been in the area!
Around £4.10 for a Guinness which I have to say tasted very good indeed! Would return if in the area.
Nice pub with a good atmosphere, full of Italians for football the night we went. The beer was very good and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Quite extensive menu but avoid the fish and chips, very average. I would visit again for the beer and atmosphere but not the food.
Popped in whilst passing the other day. Exterior looked promising from a distance (without my glasses on!), but there was a complete over proliferation of those nasty blackboards with chalked offers of fish 'n' chips etc. which rather ruined the effect. Anyway it was quiet with a mixed clientele which I guess you could expect from the location outside Gloucester Road tube. Staff were friendly enough though and I had a couple of pints of Young's Gold which I have to say was very good. They also had Pride, Spitfire and Morland Hen on offer.
think it was a pint of wells bombardier that i had it was good pint but was expensive at 3-75 a pint. but that central london. this was a pub i used in 1981 when staying for a few days in cromwell road hotel and always to go back to.it was a lot better pub then
nice pub with the friendly atmosphere. The bar staff have been working there for years and service is great. I am wondering why this place is always busy? The people below are not in the right place. You guys should be in the pub down the road? Where you can find the great service !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ditto DuncanDisorderly. In / Out, never to return.
Walked in, and then straight back out. Not a very pleasant atmosphere in here at all on the night we called in...... Strolled down the road to the" Hereford " and found a completely different feel all round, probably says it all actually......
The strip outside Gloucester Rd tube station is a pretty unappealing area without being particularly grim. There are a lot of low and middle market hotels in this neck of the woods and despite being expensive residentially this small area is dominated by tourists. The Stanhope is in keeping with this. The pub itself is a single irregularly shaped room with a central bar - seating is high tables and stools to the left of the bar and more conventional chairs and tables to the right.
Most of the customers on a Wednesday lunchtime were tourists dining and there were quite a few pre-teen children which always puts me off. The rest appeared to be local workers grabbing a swift pint. Ales on offer were Youngs Gold, Speckled Hen, Spitfire and Pride.
The Stanhope is not a grimy as it used to be but impossible to recommend as it is dominated by the transient and lacks any real character. If you are in this area walk 5 mins down to Hereford Square and go into the Hereford - it is much better

Occasional visitor here. A busy London pub. Very good, reasonably priced food. Staff are well trained with a variety of accents. The manager has won the monthly award several times and deserves it, he is probably closer to a restauranter than a publican. Beer usually very good, with a wide selection, but at London prices.
Fantastic pub with fantastic landlord. I had a pint of stella and roast beef on sunday which was worth the money. The staff are very friendly and heplfull.

We loved to come here in our winter-vacancies in 2009/2010. Very nice staff supported us with beer and Pinot. Best wishes to all of them, >> Look for pubs like this one in Germany; I guess You will fail.
Painfully SLOW service, expensive drinks and short measures.

Tuesday night I had a fantastic drink with my friends at the lovely Stanhope Arms. The staff were very friendly. as always. The only problem this place has is always busy and sometimes you can not move around. It is the right place to have a nice drink.

****Beware****Beware****Beware THIEVES OPERATE IN THIS PUB Beware****Beware****Beware****
My handbag was STOLEN from this pub last night ! The manager had a "couldn't care less" attitude and the staff just didn't know what to do ! One of the 'regulars' said it happens all the time in there. ******* I won't be going in there again*******
The worst pub i have ever had the pleasure of walking into. The staff are rude and struggle to understand basic English. Have a word
Reasonable pint of Spitfire. At this time of year 80% tourists. OK for a pint before the tube, but not much else.
Fantasic pub, I love this place. Always try to stop in for a pint or two whenever I'm down in London. Enjoyed a couple of jars on Saturday afternoon to pass the time. Sat outside as it was quite warm. Only grumble was the speed of the service, the pub wasn't exactly heaving but still a few people waiting at the bar which only had 1 person serving whilst the other 2 staff seemed more bothered about collecting the empties that pulling pints.
And why do people insist on wearing sunglasses when it isn't even sunny?
This pub is ideally located for a quick pint before braving the tube system. The Pride was good and Old Speckled Hen and Spitfire were also available alongside Hoegarden, Staropramen and some standard lagers. The staff seemed ok although they were more interested in getting the food orders out.
There is a plasma screen, but I saw no sports advertised and the pub has an over 21s policy which Id imagine kicks in during the evening as there were young kids in with families during my visit.
Its not the most exciting of pubs and I wouldnt go out of my way to drink here again.
This one's actually not bad. Open fairly late, reasonable selection of drinks and pretty good service. And a handy location next to a late opening supermarket and opposite the Tube station. Could be even better with a little more thought to the layout, which doesn't quite work, at least in the main area where a collection of high wooden tables jostle together.
It is the best pub in Gloucester road. Staff are very friendly. The manager is great with customers . Very good standards and service. This is the place where you can spend the evening. Every time i went in there this pub is really busy and i believe there is a reason why people go there.
This pub is running January sales on selected food items for 5.00, you really get what you pay for here, the Chicken Kiev was dry, the service slow and the atmosphere cold. Its my opinion that any other pub on the Gloucester Road has to better than this, spend your fiver elsewhere !
Rather a cold atmosphere, I thought, and the early Christmas decorations didn't add much yo-ho-ho to the proceedings. Still, it's close to the underground station, they offer a decent pint of Spitfire.
Three of the Stanhope's best barmaids have recently left (Monika, Dalia and Cecylia). Their replacements seem to be almost as friendly and efficient. If I owned a pub, I would want to use the same recruitment agency to find my staff.
On a rare visit to London, this was a pleasing find. Bar staff friendly enough, convenient location opposite Gloucester Road tube, food very reasonably priced, served quickly and tasted good. Good range of beers including 4 hand pulls, London Pride, Spitfire, Greene King IPA )I think) and another. Nice lean to area outside front of pub, no doubt smokers den when busy.
A nice pub, plenty of people in there on a Wednesday evening and you could see why (and it isn't just because it's opposite the tube station and near to Waitrose!). A larger range of beers than the otherwise admirable Gloucester - I had Shepherd Neame Spitfire which was fine.
Colleen, are you sure you were in the Stanhope? If the staff are rude, it sounds more like the Hereford down the road. I've always found the Stanhope barstaff to be more than friendly and polite. Amy has now left, but the hardworking team are doing a great job. Yes, many customers are tourists, but there are also a good number of regular local customers too.
This has to be the most awful pub in the country, the barstaff are rude and inexperienced, the draught beer is not kept well and the pub is totally geared to tourists who don't know any better. Stay in and don't waste your money.
Traditional English pub, selection of English ales and good meals. Very popular with sports fans - big screen used for big soccer matches. Clientele are a lively mixture of tourists and locals. Staff are friendly, fast and helpful - but shame there is such a high turnover rate. No hunky barmen at the moment. Staff are mainly Polish, Australian and Kosovan - and there's a lovely English barmaid who looks like Amy Winehouse. If you're in the South Ken/Gloucester Road area - pop in, you won't be disappointed.
Found the Stanhope in Sept 73, as an American abroad for a year, living between Earls Court and Glouchester Rd tube stops, so I'm hardly a current reviewer. More interested in seeing what happened upstairs. Late in 1972, the changed over from the Mississippi Room, a real cool, beat up and down joint which played Dixieland Jazz, to the Basin Street Bar. I played the trumpet in the Mississippi room for beer, 40p a pint, but when they cleaned up the act and brought the union in early 1973, I stopped. The Brits really loved any American jazz, hope something is still there!

Very nice traditional pub with friendly and efficient bar staff. Very busy when I visited and deservedly so. Excellent Fish and Chips too, that were served piping hot.
Nice looking old corner pub opposite Gloucester Road tube that also has a bus stop outside. Usual Spirit Group ale offering, Pride, Bombardier and the revamped Speckled Hen, in decent condition. Good selection of wines and full menu. Couple of well placed plasma screens with Sky Sports. On my visit during the Cricket World Cup earlier this year I encountered for real the often apocryphal situation of meeting an American who wanted me to explain the game to him. Luckily I know the rudiments of baseball so was able to equate runs to base hits, the wicket keeper to a catcher, a six to a home run etc. An interesting little encounter until his wife came back from shopping and dragged him away. Decent pub.
Not a bad pub but can get very busy.
If you are going for a drink round glouceser road well worth a visit, good traditional boozer that has a great atmosphere, compared to other pubs in the area stands haed and shoulders above them!!
Had a very pleasant Sunday lunchtime drink in the Stanhope. The beer was good and the bar-staff were polite and friendly. They played a very nice selection of music and it was a real pleasure drinking in a traditional pub that hadn't been ruined by being turned into a bar or gastro-pub. Let's hope it stays that way.
Hard to get served and not worth it when you are. Needs a refurb and an attitude make-over.
The Stanhope Arms (Gloucester road tube station) 6 A bit noisy and too smoky when crowded, but food and ales were OK.
I live quite nearby, and wouldn't reccommend the Stanhope. There is a limited selection of fairly tasteless beer; quite a rowdy sports pub. The Hereford Arms (2 mins down Glos Rd) is much nicer.
Great atmosphere for a London pub, has real character, good food and nice people. A real good meeting place we met people from EVERYWHERE during our weeks visits. Love the place!!!
Just went there to watch the Euro2004 match. Bought a drink and then heard the supervisor (or owner) telling a person (in a not very friendly way) that he need to buy a drink to stay and watch the match. What happen later was worse. The supervisor even told his staff right in the middle of the pub, among the crowd, to go around and see who doesn't have a drink and cannot stay. Doesn't he care whether his patrons hear what he was saying. I can understand that he needs to make money but a pub is all about being a friendly place and patrons feel wanted and will return. This place doesn't seem to satisfy the above.

I love the Stanhope. Best place in South Ken, but one question, where did that cute American red head go?

As a Scottish visitor I commend the larger 35ml spirit measures at a reasonable price. Scottish banknotes welcome. food good.

A bit noisy and smokey especially when the football is on. The beer on the other hand is pretty well kept

The best pub in London. I love it! A warm welcome, good lager and a great fish & chips. I used to stay there in my lonely nights in London, to search for myself. And they used to be lovely!!! Thank you again, Hector

I love the Stanhope Arms. Very friendly staff. I was staying just around the corner on Cromwell, and the Arms became a daily ritual. Great fish & chips, love the lager, but my favorite was sitting outside with a large merlot, and watching the world go by. Did that every afternoon.

First time visit to London and I loved this place, hung out there several nights in a row watching soccer (oops, football) and drinking Kronenberg 1664 (why can't I get that in USA ???). They have this desert (blackberry and apple cobbler with a warm vanilla sauce) that I will fly from New York just to have. What a great place, looking forward to being there again in July 2003 !!!
Warm, welcoming place with a good selection of beers and real ales. My wife and I had a good fish & chips dinner there with our 2 1/2 year old daughter--we obviously did not fit the usual profile in the place, but we were treated very well. Will definitely return!

Fantastic place, really friendly staff. Nice food, especially the all day breakfast.. Great atmosphere for footy games. What can i say, been loads of times and it is still the best pub in the area

Had a lovely time in this pub. Watched Manchester United - Chelsea here, my reds scoring in the very last minute amidst a pretty heavy Chelsea crowd
Still, the pub exploded when the goal came :)
