user reviews of the Rye Pub, Dining Room and Garden, Peckham Rye

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Ummhh where are all the reviews?
Pleasant enough with decent beer. Funny as I ordered the same food as about three years ago, but this time it came on a bread board, with an open not closed burger, everything nicely arranged, with less food but more focus on the presentation. I blame Jamie Oliver...
And an extra £1.50 for the yorkshires, you are taking the pee.
Anyway, a good location for a family and friends treat, with plenty of space in the garden, and probably the best (despite my many whinges about uncessary refurbs) for a few miles.
I met a GK regional manager who told me how they wanted to turn their pubs back into pubs. I listed all the horrid places, where they just served GK soapy IPA. He told me abot the Rye Hotel "No I said it can't be GK" 1-0 to him
Sadly it was full of TV football fans supporting the Arse, rather than locals supporting the Palace. I'd heard you had to wear headphones but maybe that has now changed back. Eagles.

baggydave,

I heard a rumour that it's gonna be more restaurant than pub in the future. The huge gazebo area out the back is being replaced with a proper extension to the building.

Having said that, it has been closed for months now and there never seems to be much work going on, whenever I pass by.

Let's hope it's not turned into another Dulwich Woodhouse type of a place.

Aside from the quality of the pub, it probably has the best beer garden in the area.
Pat_Bateman - 4 May 2012 15:46
What is happening? They seem to be doing a massive rebuild. This comes after numerous refurbs over recent years. Surely once you have done a place up, assuming that you have done your home work, you have to sit back to let the returns come in rather than have a merrygoround of refurbs. I think it is called business planning.

I managed to still enjoy this place even though it was constantly changing and despite the criminal change of name.

I assume it will be a further extension of the gentrificaition as Lordship Lane meets Bellenden Road. We shall see.

No mark yet for obvious reasons.
baggydave - 4 May 2012 12:13
Oh dear, what have they done. Very tightly packed in the garden. The staff had trouble finding tables that have ordered food prior to adding double the amount. I ordered a nice pint of flat cider and was charged 60p more for the priviledge. The front and back have absolutely no atmosphere what so ever. Was the only pub where i enjoyed sitting in the garden. Don't like this place anymore.

Practically sitting on each others laps.
mario_2 - 3 May 2011 13:51
Closed down for 10 days recently as new owners were taking over.

No idea what took them so long. The only visible change I could see was that they have foolishly and rather greedily crammed double the amount of wooden benches into the beer garden out the back. Stick in some push chairs / kids / dogs etc and you won't be able to move out there.

The drinks selection is the exact same as before. Although sadly they've followed the expsensive drinks trend in this area and the Stowford Press Cider has taken a MASSIVE jump from 3.30 a pint, to 3.90.

For that reason alone, I WILL NOT BE BACK!!
Pat_Bateman - 3 May 2011 09:56
London Pride the one and only ale on offer.

Great beer garden and less kids than The Herne.
Pat_Bateman - 28 Mar 2011 10:26
Bloodmoose,

I was also there last night and totally agree with your comments.

I felt a tiny bit sorry for the staff, as the place was packed. But still, it was a mixture of chaos and farce.

Why they attempt to provide table service with only 3 or 4 staff memebers working is beyond me.

I stood at the bar for 15 minutes to get my first pint. It didn't help matters that the rude, obnoxious, posh, 20 somethings, kept jumping the queue to order their Veggie Burgers and Shandies with their Credit Cards ... with which they predictably wanted to start a tab with.

I thought I'd cracked it on my second visit to the bar. Only me, 1 other customer and 1 barmaid. Sadly the barmaid took around 7 minutes to sort out the other customer's bill. When she eventually finished, she proceeded to serve 2 guys who had just walked up to the bar 30 seconds previously.
Luckily they had the sense (that she was evidentally lacking) and suggested (quite politely) that I was before them. When I asked her if she hadn't seen me patiently waiting all that time, she informed me, that she couldn't keep an eye on serving and watching the customers at the same time. What a pathetic excuse.

I sang this pubs praises over The Herne and The Clockhouse (price wise). But, I won't tolerate many more visits like last nights.

Pat_Bateman - 3 Jun 2010 13:44
I love this pub and used to come in all the time before I moved and I went back last night for the first time in ages ... and it will be while before I think about trying it again.

The pub remains much the same, good beer, nice food, lovely beer garden, but dear God they need to sort the customer service out. Customers were standing 3 or 4 deep at the bar being served by a guy on his first night while the 3 experienced staff wandered around the garden collecting glasses and looking for tips by doing table service. Even when they were doing that they were slow and frequently wrong with the order.

It's a lovely place, but my whole group agreed that we wouldn't be coming back unless something changes.
Bloodmoose - 3 Jun 2010 12:12
Really like the pub, great beer garden and friendly staff. However, i would not eat there again. Really unimpressed with the expensive and undercooked veggie roast option. (best roast in peckham is bar story). But, still love coming here for a drink.
jana77 - 28 May 2010 12:56
I'm quite impressed with the prices here.

Whilst the nearby Herne and The Clockhouse are both touching 4 for Addlestones, you can still get Stowford Press at The Rye for I think 3.20.

I used to spread my custom almost equally amongst the 3 pubs, but with those prices I stick to The Rye these days.

Well done Scott The Landlord. Please don't follow those other 2 rip off shops.
Pat_Bateman - 20 Apr 2010 16:54
Sorry guys from CAMRA...We had to change the name and lose the Hotel bit as we were alway getting asked about our room rates...Other than that I hope you keep coming back. Thanks,

Scott
The Landlord
theowner4 - 20 Apr 2010 16:43
Always liked this quirky place - not the cheapest but some usp's! A reasonable and interesting guest is on. Camra lot I was with had mixed views, a shame as whilst I go for trad pubs (fewer and fewer) this place that attracts a younger audience seems to get it right. Marked down a point for an uncessary change of name IT IS THE RYE HOTEL!
baggydave - 5 Nov 2009 21:51
A really good find, lovely decor and really cosy garden. Beer and food is good all in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Is it me or was I served by Di Fenner from Bad Girls last week?!?
Esty - 30 Sep 2009 09:45
lovely pub, the staff are brilliant - always friendly and helpful. had the best thai curry there last week. hope the sun comes out again soon so we can sit in the garden with a bottle of wine or two!
crystalgirl - 13 Jun 2009 09:52
Smart pub with plenty of space to drink: either outside overlooking the common, in the gastropub bar area, in the huge sofas in the comfy conservatory area, or on the picnic tables in the green and family-friendly beer garden out the back. Food is a bit pricey but presented well, and the wine list is a bit thin on choice if you don't like chardonnay, but the beer is good (mainly higher end lager, but some Young's on as well) and it's a welcoming place turned out very well. A welcome relief after risking life and limb down Rye Lane!
Rayzer - 8 Jun 2009 21:33
lovely pub, but is it a gay bar?
excellent_drinker - 11 Mar 2009 16:33
this is undoubtedly one of the best gastropubs around, the food is satisfying and moreover the staff are lovely. Plus they have a wonderful garden. Highly recommended!
reamole - 23 Sep 2008 22:25
Don't try the Montpelier- try the Rye. It's not dirty, it's clean, friendly and relaxing.
Order a pint of Leffe and a Rye burger and you will be laughing.
henryharker - 9 Sep 2008 00:07
Has a large and lovely garden. I had high hopes on Bank Holiday sunday.

However, we ordered some food. We waited. We chased our starters and were told they were coming in a rather off hand manner. We waited. We noticed others around us getting agitated with their wait. We chased our order. We waited. We chased. About 40 minutes later our starters and main courses arrived together. We sent back the now useless starters to be confronted by two staff asking us why. We sent them away. We are some OK food.

The bar staff were constantly under pressure, not knowing who to serve despite being well staffed. Then the denoument, I went to the gents toilet. Over flowing urinals and floors covered in piss.

Based on my visit this pub is poorly run and dirty. I would not recommend a visit at all.
Timmymc - 29 May 2008 15:25
Try the Montpelier. Lovely staff, brilliant menu and food. Anyone who has avoided it because of past management then give it a try. It has been transformed!
hooley - 10 May 2008 13:08
"locals people like you" are welcome to it
jezb - 9 Jan 2008 17:34
SO what is wrong with you Jezb/Johnpublic are you straight out the Maudsley then, not taking your medication is that it.This is a pub for locals people like me born in SE Londo 50 years ago, the one thing I agree is that the beer is expensive for the Peckham area. But I can also say I have never had a bad pint there. As far as food goes it is on the whole good, last summer they did have some problems but it has picked up since then. The other night had som wonderful pan fried Duck.
surreytriumphant - 19 Dec 2007 12:19
a pub for ponces
johnpublic - 5 Dec 2007 12:40
I've got to disagree with the negative comments about the Wednesday night pub quiz. I love a good quiz and I've been to many different ones across London, however this is by far the best organised. The questions are about the right level of difficulty, it doesn't start too late and it doesn't drag on for too long. It's not weighted heavily towards any particular subject and the quizmaster manages to keep the crowd under relative control. Anyone who can't handle a little swearing in a pub obviously takes themselves far too seriously and deserves to have their ego punctured by some barbed comments.

Overall the Rye Hotel is one of my favourite pubs. The beer is good, the staff are friendly and the garden is brilliant in the summer. My only criticism is that it has become something of a victim of it's own success. It can get amazingly busy on weekend afternoons, especially during the summer.
Bloodmoose - 30 Nov 2007 11:43
Dear shadowofthebeast

Did i say i was a policeman? No. I said i worked for the police force. There is a difference you sad tw*t. Would also be interesting to know what YOU do for a living.
I was at the now seemingly infamous "Poogate Quiz" and it really wasn't as bad as you make out. Perhaps the quizmaster shouldn't have said anything, but then perhaps whoever caused that remark shouldn't have done what they did either. Its not very pleasant having to put up with certain unpleasant aromas while you are trying to eat your dinner (it wasn't you was it... and that's why you're causing such a scene?)
With regards to swearing - do you not swear? Or are you someone with the mental capacity of a five year old who goes running to mummy every five minutes. Grow up. You obviously don't like the quiz or the quizmaster, so don't bother coming again and spoiling it for those of us who do like the quiz and the quizmaster.
And with regards to me being easily pleased - maybe i am. I see the quiz for what it is. A fun night out. You are obviously hard to please. Perhaps you should take up the quizmasters' weekly offer to write and host your own quiz one week and see how well you do and how well you are supported. If not, get your head out of your backside, and take a long walk off a short pier

lots of love - the hairbearbunch xxx
hairbearbunch - 27 Nov 2007 15:40
A wonderful time down the quiz at the Rye Hotel? You're easily pleased aren't you. If you like hearing about the latest blockages in the toilet, what new swear words the quizmaster has learnt this week and his latest array of hilarious misogynistic remarks then this is clearly the right place for you - I see you're a policeman, sounds like this sort of pub is perfect for you....And the wine was corked, or maybe it was just sour grapes?
shadowofthebeast - 21 Nov 2007 13:58
I too would like to respond to anonymous' comments about the quiz. My friend and I have been going for several months now and have always had a wonderful time. It must be a good night because every table is always taken, so the formula must work. There have been times when we have been unable to get a table, because it has been so busy, so instead we have huddled in a corner or played at the bar.
It does seem like sour grapes on behalf of Anonymous. Did you not win the quiz? May i suggest that:
a) if you are going to make disparaging remarks, you at least have the courage to identify yourself
b) get your head out of your backside
c) get a life
The size of the pot does depend on how many people are playing. With a pot over 100 means that more than 50 people were playing that night. Are all those people wrong?
In response to the remark about the host allowing his friends to win. This is absolutely outrageous. My team have won on a few occasions, sometimes we have done really badly. Every time we have been there has been a different winner each week. Yes, sometimes there have been teams that have won more than once. Isn't that normal with pub quizzes, especially if they are regulars? Comments like that, accusing the host of cheating are downright slanderous and damaging. The host is always friendly and helpful, especially to teams who aren't faring too well and always comes round in the breaks to offer a few extra clues to assist them. I don't know of any other quiz host who does that. He always makes us feel very welcome.
I can see you point (only just though) about the bottle of wine for 2nd place. It does seem a bit mean, but at the end of the day, they are running a business, and have to make money. What is nice about the Rye quiz is that they also do a free raffle. No other quiz that i know of offers that, so in that respect they are quit generous.
I cannot agree with the comment about the host not being funny. Ok sometimes its a bit rude and risque, but that's why we love it. After all, we are all adults. What do you expect for 2? A professional comedian? Or have you had a sense of humour bypass?
The bottom line is that you just can't seem to please all of the people all of the time. If you don't like it, the solution is simple: don't come again. There are plenty of people who love the quiz and come back week after week after week.
As for the type of people who go to the Rye quiz, none of my team are "media tw*ts" as you so eloquently put it. I work for the police, two of my team are teachers, and another is a solicitor.
We come from various parts of south london just for the quiz (one of us even comes in from Islington). Its a far better quiz than any other quiz we have taken part in.
The quiz is supposed to be fun and if you win, that's a nice bonus.
Of course the more you go the more banter you will have with the host. That's only natural when both parties get to know eachother. Don't you think it would be rude of the host not to acknowledge you?
You obviously didn't like the pub, because you also slated the food. Don't just slag it off just because. Have some constructive criticism. Or are you just a professional moaner?

hairbearbunch - 15 Nov 2007 23:25
I disagree with the comments re: the Wednesday night quiz. A group of us from work go at least once a month. It's by far the best pub in the area & the quiz is very entertaining. We've come last a few times & won a few times, but wherever we place we always enjoy ourselves. The pace is just right and the questions are an even mix of easy & "how the f*&% can anyone know that". The music is upbeat & ties in with the theme of the quiz (if there is one) but it's usually general knowledge. We've been to several other quiz nights in the area but we keep going back to The Rye mainly because of the quiz host. He's funny, friendly, a bit sarcastic & rude at times but at least he has a personality & isn't just reading the questions out in a monotone. I'd recommend going on a Wednesday night...you won't get anything like it anywhere else.
mattybatty - 15 Nov 2007 18:44
that's because you're a new media peckham tw*t
anonymous - 5 Nov 2007 11:09
I would like to defend The Rye against the likes of Anon 29th Oct. Firstly, my wife and I are those Peckham media types, and we quite like the Rye for what it is. It's been our local for 3 years, and we've pretty much always had a good meal (even if a bit delayed) and found the staff very helpful. It has certainly had a few ups and downs, but where doesn't and they seem to have done a lot of work on their menu and staff in the past year or so.

I'm not a great fan of quiz night either(which btw is Wednesday), but the choice is simple - just go another night yes? It always looks busy on quiz night so I'm sure lots of people like it.

I think the best thing about the Rye is it hasn't tried to be anything more than a pub, you can just turn up, try get a table and spend a lazy sunday eating and drinking.
anonymous - 2 Nov 2007 12:43
From the outside this looks like a decent pub. However, once youre inside its an entirely different picture. The whole place is crawling with clichd Peckham new media tw-ts you know the sort, men in their late 30s with shaved heads, silly glasses and clothes which should be worn by people 15 years younger than them while all the time listening to headphones three times larger than their heads. Probably listening to Hot Chip or something similar.

Also, avoid the Tuesday night pub quiz at all costs. Its run by the unfunniest man on the planet who cant avoid swearing like an 11 year old, being horrendously misogynistic, going on about Felix laying cables in the bog and the associated stench, and, worst of all, the team his mates are in always win in very dubious circumstances. His mates winning dubiously would be just about tolerable if the first prize wasnt over 100 and the second prize is a bottle of house red.

On the upside, there is a decent selection of beers, lagers and ciders and there is a pleasant heated room in the back which is like some sort of hippy chill out zone. There is also what looks like a decent kitchen and menu there which you would have thought would produce nice food however a lot of the things we have ordered there have been underdone or have taken an age to get to our table.

The ridiculous zig-zag layout of the tables means its almost impossible to sit down in the pub sometimes, and there arent any places you can stand in any sort of comfort either. Potentially this is a good pub but it needs a massive overhaul.

anonymous - 29 Oct 2007 16:50
Went for lunch at the Rye yesterday (Sunday Septemeber 2 2007) and never going again. There was a two hour wait for food. The manageress had clearly allowed through far more orders than the kitchen could cope with, but instead of calling a halt, she went on accepting food orders without warning punters of the delay. By five o'clock - when we were eventually eating food ordered at 2.30pm - there was a queue of fuming punters demanding money back and complaining about food that had been rushed out, partially cooked. Seriously, there was half-defrosted meat going out there - that ought to be one for Southwark Environmental Health. But the wait itself was truly appalling: the worst pub eating experience I've ever had anywhere in London or, frankly, anywhere whatsoever. We eventually complained and after a bitter exchange with the manageress got back the money for the food (three meals at 9 a burger). But I would caution anyone against this pub. Getting your money back is no compensation for a wasted afternoon, rubbish food and a lot of aggro. But it was an interesting experience to watch a pub in meltdown mode, with literally queues of furious punters demanding food, refunds and explanations. God only knows what went wrong - but never again for me.
rickydixon - 3 Sep 2007 07:15
Voted Best Pub Garden in Peckham (by my flatmate and a visiting pilot who'd just trodden in dog poo outside the station and needed a grassy area to wipe his shoes; I appologise on his behalf, but perhaps the dog owner should come forward too; I digress) and rightly so. A huge lawn surrounded by bedding plants, plenty of tables, each a good distance from one another. Good snack food too.
swifthalf - 9 Jun 2007 15:05
I like The Rye.

Nice atmosphere, good beer and wine list and the few times I have had some food it always hit's the spot. Bit of a walk from my house in East Dulwich and I always think it is worth the extra effort. When I went more recently with my partner and 18 month old daughter the staff could not have been more friendly.

The only 'wrinkle' I've come across with The Rye is that my cash-card was cloned in there in April of this year the Fraud Team at my Bank confirmed my suspicion to me over the phone) and a person or persons unknown are currently enjoying 700 lifted from my current account the day after my last visit somewhere in Thailand.

My Bank gave me advice that I think I should pass on to beerintheeveing readers now..... 'I'd use cash in that establishment from now on ! '

Enjoy.

really like this pub, things have changed a lot over the recent months and most of it in a good way. The food is great, be it thai or the more english food, including the tasty sunday roast. good beer, really friendly staff, and fabulous decor!! What I'm not too keen on is some of the tunes guys!! slightly more eclectic would be nice, I mean I don't mind loungy house but there's only so much a person can take!! Good thing you've got that marquee to be able to chill out and smoke in really! I had a great time here on sunday and I felt really looked after. thanks!
anonymous - 7 Feb 2007 17:37
This pub is an absolute gem. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. The quiz is great fun (though I didn't win - will make sure i bring some brainy mates with me next time). Fantastic now its non-smoking throughout (except in the heated marquee). Can't recommend this place highly enough
jake13 - 29 Jan 2007 18:21
Easily one of the best pubs in this part of London. Friendly, warm - and that's just the decor. Best beer garden going here in the south-east. Not just a good local but worth a trip across town for for the food or the beer. Chips... v good.

Hello everyone,
just want to thank those who have posted comments on this site. These comments (some of them!!) i use to better ny businesses. It is a great opurtunity to fix things and to let my customers have a rant if not happy.
I value honesty and fairness but I find sometimes anonymous people say just nasty stuff.I just think "oh well, better a bad one than none" and at least their talking about us!
I know that their is room for improvement for our food as we must change over time.We will be making positive changes over the next couple of weeks so come on down. We will never pretend the rye is a gastro pub as I will always say we are a pub with good honest home cooking. I dont want a michlin star just happy customers.
Again thanks for the honest comments and happy pubbing!!

Its not very often that I take the time to write up a speech on BITE...although....I decided that this pub was well worthy. After visiting I was quite impressed. It was my first time in Peckham, and I felt like I had been living there for a long time.... quite strange... it almost felt like something you wish you could have, but you never do... I LOVED IT...This pub's food was amazingggg, the sunday roast....awesome...even the good looking lady staff :) ILL BE GOING BACK HERE!

Congrats

The best pubs in London are currently owned and managed by Scott Blenkhorn, one of the most influential chefs of the 20th century. If you ever are taking a stroll through peckham visit the Rye Pub and eatery, or through Gypsy Hill, visit the Mansion. Exquisite Dining at its prime. When visiting this pub in particular I felt the need to find out who was providing such service. Its a shame that people post such comments as recieved on Sept 12th...below. It brings shame to people who obviously try quite hard to provide exquisite dining to those that APPRECIATE IT! I would definitly recommend this pub...

i,ve not lived in peckham very long so have only recently started drinking here and i think it's great. the staff and the customers are nice and friendly and i've eaten there a couple of times now and really enjoyed it. tried out the quz night last night with a couple of friends, needless to say we didn't do too well but david the quizmaster was very kind to us so we will try again and bring a some brainier friends with us next time!
southeastgirl - 12 Oct 2006 16:03
i went to the rye last night with a group of friends and we had a fantastic time. the staff were friendly and helpful though i think one girl was new. we all had snacks which were great. my mate had a burger which he said was one of the best he'd tasted so we will all definitely be back. apparently there's a quiz night on wednesdays so i think we will give it a go. liked the guest ale too
dustyboy - 10 Oct 2006 10:35
i just had to write in and comment because i love the pub. i've been coming here for a couple of years now since i moved into the area and i think everyone here is really friendly. i think the thai curry is great and tho they do make the odd mistake (don't we all!) it gets dealt with well.there are a lot of kids about on sunday which can be a bit much when nursing a hangover but it is kid free after 6. love the new decor and it seems there is going to be a new cocktail list soon. can't wait
dorothee - 10 Oct 2006 10:03
A nice pub in the summer but the place is seriously and I mean seriously overpriced. Whoever wrote that the food was good must have a serious addiction to salt. I had to send my food back as I nearly choked on it. It took hours for me to get rid of the taste of salt.Vastly overpriced. 4.80 for a pint of lager! I mean come on. Im up for enjoying myself but I really dont like being mugged. Lets face it, its not the West End its Peckham. Robbers they are!
hooley - 7 Oct 2006 14:19
It's a good place, lovely atmos most of the time, and good drink options. The minor downsides are:

1. Overpriced food for what it is. I had very disappointing 'gammon' for about 10 which was clearly reformed shoulder or something else cheap.
2. Over-run with kids on Sundays. Don't have a problem with this, but if you do, you will!

A flawed diamond I think.
Donnington - 24 Sep 2006 16:23
shame to hear the bad reviews. Don't people go out to enjoy themselves these days...with an open mind! Went in yesterday adn they have done a little decorating. Looks great. I hear the old chef might be coming back sometimes as well. Great staff, i have been going here for the last 2 years and have always been fed and watered well (odd mistakes but the staff ARE human!)
anonymous - 10 Sep 2006 22:21
nice atmosphere smiling staff and an array of customers, good food and drink. what else do you need? a pub that looks good and is good
lotty6 - 5 Aug 2006 15:26
Nice place but the chips were horrible. Rest of the food was good though and the wine is nice but quite expensive.
a.salkeld - 21 Jun 2006 17:40
I find this a relaxing pub with some of the best gastropub food around. Staff always friendly.

This can be overrun with 'new labour' families and their obnoxios kids on Sunday lunchtimes but normally clear by 3:00pm!! Still, the Sunday roast is worth all the hassle with the kids!!
INJ - 3 Jun 2006 14:49
In response to Customers.service. Try the Gowlett. Its a nice atmosphere and I am sure gay friendly, a lot cheaper than the Rye which aspires to the pretentious as its prices reflect. The Rye is a lovely pub in the summer, the beer garden is fab but the cost of food and alcohol is outrageous. It really stings if you buy a round or order food there which really isnt all its cracked up to be. For Sunday Lunch try the White Horse across the road from the Rye. It is a pensioners pub but the Sunday lunch is the best kept secret in South London. We usually eat there and then pop to the Rye or the Gowlett. Sunday lunch highly recommended but it is sometimes necessary to pub as I think its secret is out.
anonymous - 26 May 2006 13:16
I took a gay friend to this place as its listed as gay friendly but neither of us found much to recommend it. We agreed that the venue has great potential but the atmosphere is extremely uptight. The serving staff appear to be working under duress while the bar area is policed by strutting eagle-eyed managers. Judging by the prices and by the attitude you get in return, this establishment is about profit and not hospitality. If you want a relaxing drink or a bite to eat in a place where you can laugh out loud and still feel welcome I would suggest one of the many friendlier and cheaper places in the Peckham area.
customers.choice - 21 May 2006 12:47
Food is very weel presented and over priced slightly for what it is, however Sunday roast is best in London, beers pricey, but it is so for the middle class clientele to ensure the riff raff keep out. Lovely atmosphere, great lighting, sometimes people can be a bit 'Norf London' in their edginess, I have witnessed post menopausal ladies bickering over seats here. Gay friendly, dog friendly, good location, beer so-so.

First visit was on a Sunday evening and I was very impressed. Nice atmosphere, friendly bar staff, food is pricey and portion sizes appear to vary according to what you order. Be careful if you sit near the double doors, the door closer doesn't work properly and so you'll get an icy draught every now and then. All in all an excellent first impression.

Well as the old saying goes you only get what you pay for...... I really think everyone below is giving The Rye a hard time. In alot of other pubs you can never get the attention of a staff member, at The Rye you can. As for the baby changing thing...remember your mother cleaned your a-- too. I hardly think the owners and staff would allow that in the middle of the pub anyway. Every time I visit The Rye i have a great size, good quality portion of food in a very clean and well thought out environment. I think alot of care has gone in to the whole concept of The Rye and it comes as a major bonus to the surronding area. I know (because i have asked) that all the food at The Rye has been sourced by a professional chef from quality producers all over the uk. So when you look at the price you may understand that it is not taking the piss but rather a reflexion of the quality. This goes for the wine as well.I know where i want to eat!!! oh and as for the White Horse, how can you compare apples and oranges? there is no comparison, lets not forget who set the precident and had The balls to change in peckham!!! See you at the Rye...and dont forget The Gowlett as well...another asset to the peckham area.

Overpriced, measly food portions. If not into a creche-themed pub avoid Sunday lunchtime. (Watching nappy changes can put you right off your beer)

I spent a wonderful afternoon at this pub yesterday. My only criticism is that they charged me 6.50 for a glass of wine!! Otherwise a wonderful pub but not one I could afford that often. Also 9.00 for sausage and mash!!!! Please.

I agree with the previous remarks. Lovely pub, lovely staff but vastly overpriced food which really isnt that special. The White Horse across the road totally puts the food at the Rye to shame and at half the price. Having said that I think the pub, the staff, the beer garden and the decor at superb. Just do something about the food.

Congratulations. This pub is fab, from the friendly staff to the decor and the wonderful beer garden. Food is a bit on the expensive side for a pub in Peckham or even East Dulwich for that matter.

I love this pub. It has brought Peckham into the 21st century along with the Gowlett. The decor is tasfeful and relaxing. The staff couldnt be more friendly. I was bowled over when I walked in there. The beer garden is great and they have a canopy outside so that you can still be outside in summer even if its pouring down. My only criticism is the price of the food. This is Peckham, not the West End. I mean 8 for a salad in Peckham?? Having said that I love it. Also a special thank you to the staff who are always extremely friendly but never fawning. Good luck to you all.

Should point out that they have now banned kids and made it over 21's after 7pm (or is it 6?). I appreciate this doesn't affect Sunday lunch but it shows they're listening. Still a great pub 18 months on and still nothing to touch it in Peckham. Now if only we could do better in the quiz!

This is by far the best pub I have been to in the last decade of my life, Upon entering I was given a warm welcome and was treated to a friendly atmosphere. I could not believe the cooking! It was like somebody actually cared about the quality of the food there cooking. Most pubs these days cannot commit to the standards. And since I am, now a frequent visitor to my new favorite pub, I took your child warning and went on a Sunday. It seems to me that the children were completly under control by the staff. When I had asked about the bad comments it seems that the staff has taken it into deep consideration and will have no more of this. They seemed very energetic to make this the best pub it can be. I LOVE THIS PUB. THANKYOU RYE.

Yes, if I went charging around yelling in a playpark, I'd soon be thrown out.
bertramr - 4 Apr 2005 18:22
Gotta agree about the kids. Keep em out of the bar. It's not on.
anonymous - 29 Mar 2005 15:05
Look I've said this before, the food is great , the service is great but for gods sake sort out the kids thing. Sunday lunch there was a kid sitting on a potty in the middle of the dining room. It missed and pissed all over the floor. This is a PUB! Either have a family room where the kids have to eat or just ban them all together.

I THINK THIS PUB IS FABULOUS, ALWAYS A GENUINE WARM WELCOME FROM THE STAFF AND A VERY FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE. THE FOOD IS GREAT AND I HEAR THAT COCKTAILS WILL BE COMING SOON. CAN'T WAIT TO TRY THEM!

Have been coming here since the summer and it just gets better and better. Great food, really friendly staff and a fantastic ambiance. Diane and Scott know what makes a good pub.

One of the best pubs around. Great food, great wine, great people, great place. I would move in, but my wife might get the wrong idea!
anonymous - 12 Nov 2004 11:16
shame about the kids - I dont go to the local nursery for a pint so dont see why the need for adult spaces to be overrun with screaming brats. That aside the pub is great. Steak always fantastic!

The Rye is amazing! Great food and atmosphere, plus children are welcomed. Peckham's jewel!

Best pub in South East London - great food always but especially good brunch on Saturdays and great Sunday Roast on Sundays. Very good wine list. Couldn't ask for a better local.
Anna - 26 Oct 2004 18:27
We love this place, and it's hard to persuade us to go to any other pub in the area now.

I'd happily be in there all day if only they served eggs benedict for my breakfast (hint to Diane and Scott).

Everything you have read is true - the best pub in Peckham by a mile... Lovely pub, good music, lovely food, nice pint (I had Adnams Bitter - it was spot on), friendly service - the lot!!

This place is bringing all and sundry out of the woodwork. Great mix of people as all are welcome and the food is divine. (Ask to meet the Thai chef, she is a scream!)

Like the Clockhouse only much, much nicer. With a great big garden. And good food and real beer... top business.

This Pub is a fantastic local, we found it a month ago a few weeks after a complete overhall by the new owners Scott and Diane. They have created a fresh cool bar, with excellent comfort food, all for under a tenner, and that includes a hung rib eye steak...excellent. They have a massive beer garden perfect for a weekend lunch or evening drink. Everyone gets a hello on the way in, although they are getting busier by the day and they have a really good pub quiz on wednesdays. Its become our second home.
Nick - 13 May 2004 11:37
This has recently changed hands. I didn't know it with the previous owners but the new owners are very friendly. Good, extensive menu every day of the week and an excellent roast on Sundays. Reasonable prices, nice chilled out atmosphere and a huge garden out the back make this my favourite Peckham drinking spot.

The landlord is really trying hard and this deserves to do well - spread the word!
