It's okay for what it is - being another place that was not originally a pub. Ale selection was pretty limited and quality just about passed mustard.
Visited last September and just realised I hadn't made an entry on here. Nice enough place but ale selection not very adventurous; from memory there were 2 or 3 nationals plus Shropshire Gold by Salopian. Nothing wrong with the pint.
I get the feeling that this pub is quite food orientated, but it certainly welcomes and attracts drinkers. The pub gives a history of Doctor Duncan (Liverpool and Britain's first 'medical officer'). Only two ales on, Black Sheep Best Bitter and Jennings Cumberland Ale, a couple of Handpulls with Pedigree advertised were off. I went for the Black sheep, which tasted nice and was very well kept and clean looking, but a bit steep at 3.60. The barmaid was reasonably friendly, but in a 'I am happy for your custom' type of friendly. From the outside this looks like it would be a proper pub with the Cains brewery logo but it didn't really have much character to it I thought. I may come back to try a clean pint of the Cumberland Ale but wouldn't go out of my way.
Passed on my way to Lime Street Station. I had read about this one, so thought it prudent to visit.
Nice interior, especially the tiled room off the main bar.
OK pint of Black Sheep.

We passed Doctor Duncans yesterday and decided to peer through the window to see what was on. Dark Side of the Moon from Purple Moose tempted us in. Also on were Salopian Shropshire Gold, Marstons Pedigree, Jennings Cumberland Ale & Black Sheep Best Bitter. Its' the same old Doctor Duncans. But the ale range is improving.
As is our wont we popped into Doctor Duncans on an Easter Sunday evening and sat in the same seats as on our previous visit a couple of months ago. Once again we were the only customers on which was a very pleasant evening. The beer was o.k. at least but then the door opened and in walked three Manchester United supporters who as it turnd out were very pleasant in spite of the drubbing United received at Everton. People say it's an office workers and students hangout but if I were the owner, I'd be looking for a wider range of clientele and start serving food and get some wide screens in because if they don't, I for one won't bother returning to the miserable hole.
The Cain's décor is still evident but not one of the six ales available was from Cain's. Has Cain's Brewery closed entirely? Less than half full with office types having a swift post-work drink. I had a nice pint of Pacifica Pale from the Tyne Bank Brewery.
Went here for the first time in a while on Saturday to see how the pub had changed after the demise of Cains. In truth, it was a little disappointing. The interior is still pretty much the same. But whilst the beer selection has moved on from just Cains - Tetleys, Black Sheep, Cumberland Ale & Pedigree, it's still a pretty average selection and the wait to get served was almost 10 minutes. The one girl was on her own behind the bar. So a few more staff wouldn't go amiss.
We had a couple of pints in the tiled room . It was as dead as Hell. Like the Tap it had some real ales but the girl behind the bar hardly had the energy to serve us. Now I read it's closed! Remarkable!
Love this pub which has a wonderfull room decorated in Victorian tiles. Serves good Cains beer.
After a nice trip out to New Brighton, the bus dropped us off almost outside, so we felt obliged to enter and I'm glad we did. For a start it was lovely and warm and the whole atmosphere of the place was cheerful. Perhaps it was because we were sat beside one of the old piping hot Victorian radiators that the pints of delicious Cains bitter went down so quickly.
Our last port of call on last nights mini-pub crawl of the city centre. Arrived at around 10:45pm and were surprised to find the place almost empty. I'm not a great fan of Cain's beers but there was a good slection last night so everyone found something to their liking. I had Cains IPA which was nice but upon asking for a second pint I was told that it had 'gone'. Not impressed. I then had a passable pint of Cain's Bitter. Worth a visit if in the city centre.
We unintentionally dropped into Dr. Duncans when the bus back from the match at Trenton Park dropped us off almost at the front door. As it was early evening, it wasn't so packed which suited us fine. My pint of Cains Bitter was excellent, so I had another. My wife is partial to Cains Raisin ale, which I find rather off-putting but everyone to their own. We sat in the room with the odd interior, like a Casablacan railway station waiting-room. It was worth the visit for the decor alone.
Decided to give this place another go last thursday. It was empty at 6pm when you'd expect it to be quite busy.
The uninterested bar maid served me a pint of Cains Bitter which was still only 2.60 (don't think they've put their prices up for over a year). I sat down at the long table by the TV which only ever seems to show Sky News with the volume turned down all the time. My pint settled to leave a 1 inch head so I had to take it back for a top up which the uninterested bar maid did after giving me a funny look!
This place needs a makeover as it could still be a great pub. But if the brewery can't be bothered and the staff can't be bothered then I don't think I'll bother with it anymore.
Had it with this place! How is it still rating 7 odd? See my previous review; latest visit the beer was still crap but they know how to charge for it! 3.10 for a pint of 3.8% Blonde Bird. Ive NEVER said this about a real ale pub in over 40 years of pretty hard drinking; I aint going back! They can stuff their overpriced poorly kept beers. Even more of, such a shame etc.
Had a pint of the Raisin Beer last night. Other beers on were also from Cains - Triple Hop, Bitter, IPA & FA. It was reasonably busy, without being packed. Still don't see much reason to come here apart from to see the one room.
Visited on Friday night expecting some fine Cains ales....Oh dear. The Bitter was as flat as a fart and the IPA was not much better. Last time I was in here (6 months ago) it was superb. Maybe I picked a bad day ?
Was here last week to try a pint of the new Cains "Bonfire Toffee". I was expecting a stout or porter, or even a strong dark ale - but what I got appeared to be a pint of Cains Bitter with a very (and I mean "very") slight hint of toffee. And at 3.10 a pint I wasn't impressed.
My visits to Doctor Duncans are becoming less frequent !!
Still reasonable enough for a 'down town' pub but we were a little less impresed with the beer quality. The pint of Liverbirds was okay but the Raisin beer wasn't so good. Also one of the party ordered a a pint of Dragon Heart and was given a bottle of it - they didn't mention to him that it wasn't on draught.
anonymous - 8 Oct 2011 10:42 |
No guest ales available last night but the full range of Cains beers was. I opted for Cains Pilsner Lager which I hadn't had before. It was fine. Quite busy but then John Cleese's show at the nearby Empire Theatre did finish very early and so that helped.
I have a friend who worked in several of Cains pubs when they had a larger chain. Apparently they really are the Brewery who could not organise a p*** up in their own premises. Cains is hard to find near where I live so I was really looking forward to a pint in this wonderful building. Its not the best pub interior but it has one of the best rooms you could wish to drink in. Imagine my disappointment when the pint of Cains was just this side of being handed back. It wasnt off but if they tried just a little harder.. This place used to carry a wide range of Cains brews and usually a guest but not any more. If your listening .if you cant run a pub then sell it and let someone else have a chance to do a better job than you are managing with this part of your business. Such a shame, all round.
Had a few pints of the local brew in there when visiting Liverpool recently. It was pretty quiet (but this was about 2pm on a Monday), but pleasant enough. If I am back in the area I would definitely go back.
I met some friends in here early evening yesterday prior to going to a concert. The full range of Cains beers was available. However, I opted for the guest ale, the name of which escapes me but it was from Caerphilly. It was a light refreshing pint. Not impressed with the price though - over 3. Very few customers but then it was a cold Monday evening in January.
Classy, superb beer, clean, tidy but atmospheric enough. A pleasure to drink in
Sounds like the last reviewer ought to be in a morgue- I too am anti-British confrontational pub system in which the strongest wins, but that is the sad state of affairs for the consumer in this country- we're all too cowardly to complain except on anonymous websites! hahahah!!!! This pub is simply one of Britain's most beautiful, and CAINS beers are some of the most imaginative and flavoursome in Britain- that's enough to be happy with- in winter the views from this pub are simply wonderful- Liverpool should be proud. Yes, its run by kids- but thats' Britain. It's lively and for goodness sakes, don't rue that!
@Snarling_Mallard
This pub is great during the week, especially in the afternoon, i.e. "Not as raucous and manic as other city centre pubs".
However, some evenings, especially Friday and Saturday, it is very raucous and manic and is actually not a very nice experience. It attracts the office worker crowd and people who should know better considering thair age and background! You know the type - wearing shirt, tie and expensive suits who crowd around the bar drinking and gaffawing and making it impossible for anyone to get to the part of the pub up the stairs where the TV is, or through to the ornately tiled room!
I don't mind pubs when they are busy - as long as I can get to the bar to get served and don't get looked at by other drinkers who think I've just stepped of a spaceship from Mars!
Furthermore, the selection of drinks isn't great and some of the bar staff can be rude and would rather chat to each other and serve people who push in before others who were there first!
A relatively recent conversion from offices which works better than many former shop/office/warehouse conversions. A Cain's house we tried the Cains Bitter which wasn't brillinat but then moved on to the Raisin beer which went down very nicely. Not as raucous and manic as other city centre pubs.

Friendly bar staff, good beer and amazing tiling
Yesterday was my first visit here in over a year. The interior is still one of Liverpool's finest - well at least the one room is. However, the beer selection is always a little limited and there is no real cider, unlike the Dispensary which also dispenses Cains, 10 minutes walk away. Yesterday's selection was Morland Original, Skinners Penny Me Quick and Cains Voyager and Raisin Beer. I tried the Raisin Beer, which I was not too impressed with. For me, you come here for the interior. Once architecturally sated, you move on to Liverpool's best drinking pubs.
Paid 2.90 for one of the guest ales in here last week and it wasn't well kept. Now I know why I usually have the Cains Bitter when I come here!
I always look forward to going to Dr Duncan's when I'm in Liverpool, but this time I was cheesed off to find that they've discontinued the cask version of Cains Dark Mild. They must be mad. Bankers haven't ruined the pub, but Cains are having a damn good try.
Very good pub, the tiled room on the right is a must see. Make an effort to go there as soon as you can-before some evil banker finds a way of ruining it.
Apparently it's only been a pub since 1999 (and it doesn't exactly look like one from the street, being in the ground floor of a substantial old office block), but once inside you might think you were in a venerable hostelry. It has a slightly rustic bar at the front, two rather dark rooms at the back with some interesting memorabilia and the rightly renowned corner room which has one of the most impressive tiled interiors you will see in a public house. Nine handpumps, with a good selection from the Cains range (including a first-class pint of the Finest Bitter) and a number of guest beers. A worthy introduction to Liverpool as you walk into the city from Lime Street station.
Very well presented boozer and decent beer, a bit chilly towards the back of the though which is the only place we could find a seat - this is because the smoking area is right next door to it and the smokers kept leaving the door wide open while it was minus two.
Had ordered before I spotted the bottled Raisin Beer in the fridge, shame it wasn't on tap.
The best pub out of all I've visited in Liverpool. Cain's house serving there Mild, Bitter, IPA, Autumn Leaf (seasonal) and the legend that is FA (Formidable Ale). Well designed pub with a number of different drinking areas, plenty of space and generally pleasant surroundings. Extremely handy for Lime Street station.
Many a time spent in here waiting for my train home from Lime Street which is a short 2 minute walk away.
Also a great place to begin a crawl as 400 metres away is the Ship & Mitre on Dale Street - one of several great pubs in this part of the city such as the re-opened Vernon Arms, The Lion Tavern, Railway and Rigby's. And not forgetting the Poste House tucked away down cumberland Street.
Excellent range of tasty Cains ales, in a quiet but marvellously designed pub worth a visit for the decor alone
Cains premier tied house based in half the ground floor of the former Pearl Insurance building, also the nearest consistently decent pub to Lime Street Station. Most of the Cains range usually on sale at the front bar counter, often served by young, attractive, dusky maidens, who actually do a very good job. The ale is consitently good. Three drinking areas, those at the front were customer facing in Pearls day so they are very ornate, the back/side room is a bit plainer and has a vaguely chemist shop theme, in homage to Doctor Duncan I guess. Pulls in all sorts of customers being close to the station and so much more superior to nearby pubs.

Had a couple of pints of Sundowner in here on 05/06/09 prior to going to a concert. Ale was well kept. Surprisingly for a Friday night the pub was only half full. Still well worth visiting.
Another pub in Liverpool I finally got around to visiting this weekend. It's right next to the Marriott Hotel and was handly for a crafty pint whilst waiting for a wedding reception. There's 3 or 4 distinct drinking areas, with the quietest at the rear. The tiled room to the right of the bar is very impressive. In the rest of the pub, I felt that the presence of big screen TVs were more a distraction than a plus point. Real ales were exclusively from the Cains range - Mild, Bitter, IPA, FA and the seasonal Sundowner Ale. Unfortunately for me, no real cider is served. Although the raisin beer very nearly tempted me.
Decent large old pub with resident Cains beers to chose from, Triple Hop this months offering was nice, fantastic interior too.
Great beer....surly misrable staff
This is my starting place when I'm on a night out in Liverpool. One of the best real ale pubs in Liverpool. Cain.s FA is what it say's - Formidible!!
Excellent pub just near to Lime Street. Superb range of beers, lovely pub, friendly staff, best pub in liverpool ive visited. Will always go back again now
Would have got a 10 rating excecpt for not being open at 11am, so drops a point for that. Only fault though.
The raisin beer is superb !
Went into there on Monday afternoon for a quick pint. Ended up staying in there and trying many of the fine Cains beer on offer. A very clean and friendly pub with a fantastic range of locally produced beers. Perhaps my favorite pub in Liverpool City centre.
great pub.good selection of beers
One more pint of bitter to buy and I get a free one with my loyalty card.
A trip to Liverpool's ESSENTIAL point of call, The full range of Cain's mouth watering brew's to choose from, 8/10
Great interior decor, can get very busy. A great selection of Cains Ales.
I can recommend a bottle of the Cains Raisin beer. Great.
Must visit pub ideally located close to public transport links
Another 'must do' city-centre pub. Famous for its' selection of ales. Gets very crowded.
Huge range of Cains beers. Lovely ornate room to the side of the bar. Handy for Lime Street Station. Gets very busy post 5pm.
As I was informed previously that this pub served up a full range of Cains beers and that the brewery used this as their city centre flagship boozer. Dead handyfor Lime Street station and the out of town crowd. The marble tiling and pillars in the through room to the far end of the main bar is extrodinary and the pub itself has an ambience all of it's own even though your not far from the real city centre. CAMRA need this in their regional almanac for sure - it's a lovely place and the ales really well served and of fine quality. This has to be one of the architecurally superior venues in Liverpool and I will visit again and again while on Merseyside.
Mcloj - 27 Jan 2009 12:26 |
Full range of Cains available at this flagship pub just across the road from Lime Street station. But the real reason to visit has to be the awesome room off to the right of the bar with its marble tiling and pillars. Although not in CAMRA's NI, this is one of many architecurally superb pubs in Liverpool, and always worth a visit.
They now have a loyalty card. Buy 10 pints and get the 11th FREE. Not bad really but still 1.35 for Cains Bitter 2 minutes up the road in the Crown on Lime Street compared to 2.30 in Dr Duncans. When I went in here early Sunday evening 2 guys were playing chess and an elderly gentleman was snoozing in a chair listening to his DAB radio! Very relaxing!
Cains flagship pub serving the whole range of Cains beers, a good pint as well. Has a fine tiled room to the right of the bar with an interesting fireplace as well. Not as ornate as the Philharmonic but pretty impressive.
Looks good but nearly emty when visited. Have to go again. You find the citybeer Cains there, try doble bock.
I used to enjoy coming here but recently have noticed that the prices have gone up. 2.80 for a pint of Cains Raisin beer! (It's not even that nice!) Plus, it was apparent that a solicitor/law firm was having it's Christmas night out on the evening I popped in. If you have ever been to Dr Duncans then you will know that there is only one entrance that leads to a step by one end of the bar, which is very narrow, and leads through a door to the very ornate and largish room with the open fire. Now, this group of pin-stripe suited, coke snorting Tory boys (all 40+ plus of them) had decided to congragate in the entrance to the pub and in the narrow bit by the bar, guffawing away into their pints - and not moving out of the way for Moi or anyone else who wanted to get past. Thankfully, once I got to the bar I got served quickly by a bar maid who looked grateful to be serving a subordinate instead of a suited prat. The large tiled room was empty and I could drink my pint in relative silence, only being interupted when the Tory boys came in to make the trip to the basement toilets to snort their coke!
Well... we were on our way for a curry, but stopped off here for a quick one..! Great pint of Cains, coupled with friendly staff and clientele..! Been here a few times before, but haven't yet managed get as far as the tiled room below. Not sure if I could properly appreciate it this late in the crawl... but always a pleasant stop..! Now for the curry...
I go here several times a week and love it. Had a great pint of Cains FA yesterday served by a lovely friendly bar maid! Just hope it doesn't close down now that Cains have gone into administration!
Friendly welcome in this busy pub, which has a good range of Cains ales. Well worth a visit.
This is a great pub with a wide choice of Cains beers. I suggest have several half pints so that you can try a little of everything before you are in no state to remember what you've had! Fabulous tiled interior & nice relaxed atmosphere.
I was served a very poor pint of Cains Dark Mild here this week. I took it back to the Bar person who grudgingly exchanged it for a pint of 2008; they didn't pour it properly and told a colleague to 'top it up' after I waited for the drink to settle. OK, so the bar person was tired my point it however that the "Tiled Room" was full of international guests and I thought what a thoroughly poor customer/visitor experience for any of our guests to have experienced in the hands of Charmless Barperson of the Year. Put it this way: Charmless Barperson would be their written warning if they worked for me. Finally, the men's restroom still ranks as one of the most disgusting this side of Hades, it is still truly vile.
Fine flagship Cains pub in the City Centre near Queen Square and next door to The Marriott Hotel.
You can choose from Bitter, Mild, FA, IPA or the 2008 Ale celebrating Liverpool's achievement as European Capital of Culture.
Do be sure to visit the magnificent ornate tiled room downstairs - this part of the building was previously the headquarters of Pearl Assurance.
Dr Duncan was the first Medical Health Officer in Liverpool in the 1800's and these are interesting framed panels dotted round the pub giving more information.
This is another central Liverpool pub that is worth visiting, with its cental location making it an ideal start or finish point for a crawl
Dark mild, yum yum yum! Beautiful tiled interior. Real gem.
Excellant cains pub. The menu is very good. you can tell the brewery is local. Had the bitter which was super. 9/10
Was in Liverpool yesterday. I trip to liverpool would not be complete without a visit to a Cains Pub. This has to be one of the best and its near Lime Street station on the way back from the Ship and Mite!
The beer has much improved here of late. Although resembling a vasectomy clinic's waiting room its well worth a visit. Oh, the gent's is truly dreadful and reminiscent of boozers of yore, it smells, is dirty and the floors are often awash with....fill in the blank.
Best pub of my weekend in Liverpool. Fantastic range of Cains beers. The Dark Mild was to die for and yet another great Liverpudlian pub interior.
Cavernous city centre boozer with a great range of Cains that is always well served and kept and as it's only about 2 minutes walk from Lime Street station it's usually my first stopping off place whenever I go into the city on train. As has already been mentioned, the tiled room is one of real aledom's great hidden treasures. The only downside I know of here is the 'beer garden' a flagged area about 6 feet square that has a couple of rickety benches installed in it. It doesn't quite live up to the rest of the pub's ecellent quality. But so what? I'd much rather be in a cosy corner inside.
Enjoyed the selection of Cains beers in this clean, friendly pub. Had a wander round the rooms and was amazed with the tiled room off the bar area. Wonderful column and fireplace.
A great pub with a good range of beers and a fantastic Victorian tiled interior that is worth a look alone.
Generally a good variety of Cains on offer and well kept. Like this place.
Visited Liverpool from London a fortnight back. Discovered this place - a well cared for pub, with an array of Cain's brews. Very impressive. Enjoyed the FA.
I think this is one of Liverpool's finest. Cains is a top brew and the variety on offer is always good. I recommend the 5% Formidable Ale - very quaffable and sent me into "alternative reality" land very quickly. No,not legless just pleasantly woozy. Nice traditional front bar, a bit Dublinesque, not so keen on the back room-tacky- but the Dispensary part is tops. Staff pleasant. Haven't tried the food yet but I go for the beer!
Been using this pub as the alternative bar at the Marriott bar next door. Friendly staff and 2.06p for the Cains Bitter. Clean and Tidy, nothing wrong with this city centre pub in my book
Perfect for an away fans pre match pint - hop in a taxi outside to get to Liverpool, Everton on Tranmere
anonymous - 15 Nov 2006 18:59 |
I'd say this is a poor example of a flagship pub. The beer is only ever 'ordinary' you can seldom get the famous Cain's Lager and I have not seen a guest beer here in many a month. Week in week out you will get an excellent pint at The Lion or The Fly. Why not here?
It's an average pub with fairly decent beer.
anonymous - 12 Sep 2006 22:39 |
Cheap good beer in nice surroundings. The bar staff were very friendly and helpful when I asked about plaecs to eat in the vicinity. The location means that it was rather crowded, I can't vouch for it in the past, but I had a pleasing visit and an excellent Cains Mild.
After a third disappointing visit I shall probably call time on this once highly rated and iconic Liverpool pub. Its the beer you see! At one time you could be assured that a good selection of well-kept beers was to be had. Now, you'd be lucky to find one decent one. On recent visits the flagship Cains lager was 'sour, the Cains IPA flat and tasteless and the 'guest' Cains Victoria bitter was similarly flat and poorly kept. Suggestion: Clean your pipes and look after your beers. I'm not paying 2+ per pint for poor beer. If 'The Fly' can do it properly week in week out Dr. Duncans can do it too. Flagship Cains Pub? You're having a laugh - but not with my money you aint.
Still better than many, but the guests have gone and the Cains bitter and the IPA bore no resemblance to the quality beers sampled here a year ago. Food still looks good value, and it is still a favoured haunt of football fans post-Liverpool games. And the aspect across St George's hall is worth the visit.
Came in here on a recent visit to Liverpool. The beer was terrible. I tried several different ones but all were in poor condition. It's a shame that one of Cain's flagship pubs can't look after its beer. Won't be recommending it to anyone else.
Great beer, attractive surroundings and the food isn't bad either.
Can get a bit busy at the weekends but overall a fantastic Cains pub.
Great beer, great tiled seating area(with lofted ceiling) and no scallies...One of my favourite Liverpool pubs, though it took me a few minutes to find it.
An excellent pub, right next door to the Marriot Hotel. I always go in for a pint or two when I am up there on business.
They always have a great selection of beers, both Cains of Liverpool and guest beers. Definitely a pub for the mature drinker. No jukebox or slot machine (at least, I have never noticed them.) A good place for a quiet pint and a chat.
The tiled saloon room is fantastic, a converted insurance office if I have been correctly informed. The back rooms could do with brightening up a bit.
An excellent pub if you like quality cask beer. Service is always very good and friendly. Pub could do with some new decoration, especially the back rooms. One of the best real pubs in Liverpool.
Doctor Duncans is one of the finest pubs in Liverpool. It is certainly the best place to go for real ales. It is not catered for young people, but I am 18 and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and great beer. My advice for any visitors is to try a Red Erick. Also if you like this you will probably like the Ship and Mitre which is not far from Doctor Duncans.
Simon Hewitt - 5 Oct 2004 22:28 |
Doctor Duncans attracts many real ale enthusiasts because of the huge variety of guest ales on offer (700 in the last 12 months) and the excellence of it cask ales, which won it the first Cask Marque accreditation in Liverpool.
A handsome pub, lovingly refurbished in authentic Victorian style, it lies at the heart of Liverpool's newly regenerated Queen Square area. The name commemorates Doctor Duncan, a relentless campaigner against poor living conditions in the Liverpool of the Victorian era, and the first Chief Medical Officer of Health to be appointed in the UK.
Wayne Storm - 27 Aug 2004 19:36 |
If you like the smell of middle aged men who only ever get off the couch to drink beer then this is the pub for you. Caters to an older crowd than the trendier pubs and sells the local Cains beers as well as a variety of guest beers. The best thing about it is the tiled side room which is worth a look if are interested in ceramic decoration.
seany - 25 Jun 2004 11:45 |
Forgot to mention that this pub accepts Euros. And coach parties.
palmwinedrinkard - 12 May 2004 13:33 |
This was an excellent pub when it first opened, slightly off the beaten track in Liverpool city centre. It's gone downhill a bit as it now tries to appeal to maximum number of bodies rather than quality, but that's more at weekends. It's still a good place to go in the afternoon.
It sells Cains beers and guests, which are best consumed in the back room, which was once the ornate reception to an insurance company, or some other wealthy Victorian commercial business. This room is very calming and invites you stay longer than you intend...
Haven't tried the food for a long time. Happy enough with the beer. Handy for the station too, avoiding those horrible bars on the station concourse.
The toilets used to be part of an air raid shelter during the war.
Always busy and popular. (The pub, not the toilets.)
