The Cheshire Cat, Chester

Went here for a quiet dinner for two. It was a Saturday night, but on arrival at the booked time, we were surprised to be told the table was not ready. After a wait in the bar - about 20 mins - we made our way to the table. After a further wait of 15 mins we were advised that there was a 45 minute wait for food as the kitchen was "very busy". I noticed another couple get up and leave at this stage but we stuck it out. Not worth it. Our steaks, when they did arrive, were not the best, with too much gristle. The chips tasted like oven chips. The beer was fine, but to be honest, I won't be going back there.

Fox and Hounds, Barnston

This is quite possibly the perfect pub. Brilliant beer (sampled a splendid Theakston's Best, and Timothy Taylor's Landlord), traditional decor with a few individualist traits (the collection of presentation whisky boxes is fascinating), nice comfortable seating and eating area, good food choices, friendly staff.

The Red Lion, Westminster

I've been here a few times recently and it keeps going up in my estimation. The ale is splendid, the (limited) sandwich lunch menu very good and not bad value either for central London, and the staff are very friendly and cheerful. Although the ground floor bar gets a bit crowded - unavoidable in such a touristy area - the downstairs bar has more space and provides welcome respite from the bustle above. Strongly recommended.
