Due to close in a few weeks for what is rumoured to be a refurbishment?
Closed at 15:00 on a busy bank holiday. Closed or closed down? difficult to tell.

We saw the Reckless Engineer when we had arrived at Temple Meads station earlier in the day. It looked like a bit of a dive. On our return and with 10-15 minutes before our train departure, it seemed a good idea to slip in a swift half. Two ales were Otter Ale & Wells Bombardier Burning Gold. The best cider I could see was Addlestones on keg. The interior was pretty basic, with not much in the way of decoration. There were few other customers in either, considering its prime location opposite the station. Pretty poor, but handy.

We visited Bristol last weekend and stayed at the HI Express next door. On returning from a gig on the Thekla, we decided to go to this pub - not far to crawl to our hotel! It was brilliant!! A fantastic live band, good ale and wine, friendly punters... ended up dancing with a lady who, like me, had her husband with her but he didn't partake! Lots of bikers, all very friendly. Yes, it's a bit sparse, but I suppose it depends what you want - we like ale and rock, so it ticked those boxes before even chatting to the friendly locals! Great atmosphere - fab night, so much so am roping in my biker chic mate to get the train over one evening just to go here! :)

After arriving at Temple Meads & finding my hotel I set off for beer. I was aware of this pub from a previous trip to Bristol so I tried it again. Though a bit run down (almost grotty) there was still a nice welcome, and a pint of Butcombe (3.10) was okay. Perhaps not the best advertisement for Bristol for rail arrivals but that could be said for many pubs near stations.
Suggested as a meeting place after rolling off a train at Temple Mead but there are far better pubs nearby (look up The Cornubia and The Kings Head). It has an estate pub feel about it, a fair bit run down and the first beer we had was cloudy, the second tasteless. The clientele were also far more friendly in the other Bristol pubs we visited. We won't be visiting again I'm afraid.
Good pint of Otter Ale supped here yesterday afternoon, Butcombe was also available. Not quite sure what or who this pub is trying to appeal to, it takes the word 'spartan' to extremes, still the beer is fine and its handy for Temple Meads station, and better than W*nkerspoons any day.

Bit of a live music and bikers haunt (well, that's how it appears anyway), so as far as I'm concerned 'All Good'. Couple of real ales on and the usual lagers and cider. Yeah it's a tad run down, but hey ho. When the bands are playing and everyone's partying....who care, as long as the beers good!! 7/10 from me.

on our recent trip to the U.K. we stopped in and had a few pints and they were excellent and the 25 year old bar man was very friendly, and we look forward to going back.
after my trip to the mendip towns it was great to back to reasonable price for beeri have been in a few times over the years being close to temple meads station.the budcombe bitter was of good quality and at 2-60 pint good price.would go again if using temple meads station

This should really be a prime spot right opposite the station and without much competition around, but it was very quiet on a recent Monday evening. For most of the time we were there, there were just four other punters in there playing darts, but we subsequently discovered that even some of them were the staff when they stopped their game to serve us.
Maybe the place needs a bit of investment. Its a bit rough around the edges and could certainly do with being a bit more welcoming. Theres a couple of raised areas (one often used for bands) with the sort of iron railings around them that you would expect to see at a subway entrance, not in the middle of a pub. The toilets were dirty and smelly which is pretty inexcusable given how quiet the place was.
There were six hand pumps on the bar, but only four in use, and these were all duplicated. So just two beers on, namely Butcombe and Otter. Slightly better choice of ciders with Stowford Press, Blackthorn and Addlestones.
Not bad and convenient for the station. Not much in the way of atmosphere. Two so-so ales from Otter etc and reasonably priced.
Not been here for a while, but it's now on my route home from work. Called in yesterday evening for a pint that turned into three. Butcombe Bitter well kept and not over priced @ 2.60. Otter Bitter also available @ 2.40. Staff are friendly too!
always have a great time in here, seen some good bands and the clientele are friendly, nice pint of guinness.
Not a bad pub. Good range of ales but music was too loud! A few undesirables in there but no bother.
Good range of ales and cider when I last went there.
Only been in twice, but both times I have really enjoyed myself. good atmosphere, decent beer and handy for temple meads
Good beer & full of (ageing) hells angels when I was in. Found myself singing along with the background music.Much better boozer than first impressions would suggest.
Scatty-girl-who-can't-count behind the bar aside, a pretty good time-killer with acceptable ale choices. Actually quite quiet during the day, so is a better bet for a liquid lunch than the then-hustling Templar up the road.
Pleasently surprised...decent beer and friendly staff. Useful if awaiting your train.
Ideal location to sup a pint or two while waiting for your train. The beer was in good condition and the bar staff friendly. I'm not too keen on the pale blue decor though!
This place looks very wine-bar-y outside, but it's surprisingly acceptable. Friendly and pleasant staff, older clientele than you might expect, three good real ales. Perfectly located for the station. Just avoid it later in the evening when the music volume is turned up and the younger customers arrive.
Popped in for a "prelim" before the Bristol Beer festival on Friday night. They had 6 ales on from a menu of 9 which were due over the weekend. A bit noisy and smokey for my liking, but can't complain about the beer and service which were both excellent!
Disinterested girl serving while chattin away constantly on mobile, but 3 ales all the same. I opted 4 a very well kept pint of Doombar which went down a treat. 7/10
Now (VERY!) blue on the outside!!!
Excellent ale,(and I consider myself a critic!!) Butcombe,Otter Bitter and a guest. Surprisingly good food. Needs the smoking ban to realise its potential. Staff better than the "run-of-the-mill/disinterested" type found in most Bristol pubs. Pleasant landlord. Rock bands fri and sats to put you jumping round the the place when yer mashed, jazz sunday lunch so you can have a nap on the bar..... Never (in my memory) has there been a pool table. Rock(ish) jukebox.
dunno why but ive got a soft spot for this place
Looks a bit intimidating from the outside but don't be put off, friendly inside and handy for Temple Meads.
Spent an intriging Saturday night in here, waiting to go home after a all-dayer, thought the place was quite dull, but just before Midnight, myself and a few of the locals got down to a bit of Rage against the Machine, had to be stopped when one rather drunk reveller smacked his head off the pool table.
Good beer, handy for station, not bad for gigs, better pubs near by!
pub convenient for station which concentrates on rock music in the evenings. Consequently basic decor but had good value lunch and excellent pint of Butcombe
