Luckily no tele on when we visited. We return from year to year and this is still one of THE places to visit in the whole country. Absolutely wonderful from the real cider to the pies and rolls and the great atmosphere.

What a fantastic pub. So much personality and heavenly for a cider drinker, with a lovely choice of traditional ciders. Keeping with the traditional theme the pub is beautifully rustic with rolls on the bar and wooden benches.
But why oh why ruin it with a horrible tele?!

Most excellent! One of the just 4 remaining Cider Houses in the UK. No beer, just cider, perry and fruit wines. A huge number of ciders and fruit wines stocked behind the bar, extremely knowledgeable staff who help you choose according to your taste. Sparkling or still, sweet, medium or dry, clear or cloudy... We ended up staying quite a bit longer than expected! Great!

Since going in here I have had more cider in 6 months than the rest of my life! Really good cider, not the usual stuff from pubs that make a weak attempt at saying "We do real cider" (No you don't - in the main). Bar staff know what they're talking about, cider and wine only, basic snacks with a paved area to the rear for some air or smoke depending on your choice of seat. Even some old arcade games too! Love it!

Visited midday last Thursday. Sams + 3 country wines - nettle, rasberry and apricot. Lush. Pub itself is quite basic, but has charm - you need to be turned on by wine / cider to enjoy, really.

visted in mid october 2011 for the third time in 2011 on diffrent holidays.the 1+2 time was brillant as it always was drinking sams cider and trying 1 of the fruit wines.the third occasions was ok but not as great as previous times in the past.years i had been in.still a great bar and a rating of nine

There is no point going to any other pub once you have been in here. Especially if you like cider. This is an old style boozer with a unique atmosphere. Great selection of cider at very good prices. We saw a whole range of clientele come and go of all different age groups.
10/10 we will be back!

The one and only. Love it.

Dear Oh Dear! What a night. I've never once heard the cider bar anthem; "I drinks and I laughs, and I laughs when I shit myself" - that all changed last night. Sat in the corner I devoured 6 pints of vearying degrees of scrumpy. I then blew it all back out the passage. Oh dear - poor toilets. Usually I keep myself neat and tidy - well hygienice usually - but jesus. Blow out central. Awesome pub. Great atmosphere.

I can't compare this place to any pub I have ever been in. Totally amazing - like stepping back in time into a long lost different world known only to grey haired guys with mutton chop sideburns. An array of barrels filled with dangerous sounding ciders like black rat and suicider, augmented with a large collection of wines - parsnip anyone? The locals and barstaff were welcoming and helpful, and the layout quirky and confusing. Brilliant, just brilliant, and an instant entry into my all time top 10.

After 5 minutes in The Cider Bar, it instantly leapt into my top 10 favourite pubs in the country.
It's like stepping back in time (in a really nice way) inside this place.
Old boys with cloth caps and one even had an ageing Greyhound ... I loved it.
The cheese on the cheese and onion sandwich was about 2 inches thick.
Huge choice of ciders of course.
I'd love to go back again.

Ah, this is my kind of place! A very basic interior, stools crafted from barrels, the barrel motif extending to the bar, mostly stone floored with herringbone parquet in some areas. Beyond the bar a long narrow seating area leads out to an equally narrow yard with raised seating. A huge selection of ciders and perries, mostly direct from the barrel and mead, as well as a large selection of wines in a bewildering variety of flavours - including damson, sloe and elderberry. I sampled several perries - Westons, Merrylegs Broadoak and Sam's Autumn Cider and something called Suicider. I also tried the damson wine which was superb. This is a no-nonsense drinking hole and I shall be returning very soon.

Yes, I live in Southend upon Sea and everytime I go to the West Country, make a point of breaking the train journey in Newton Abbot to visit this establishment, truly one of the great places. Off to Dartmouth for music festival this Friday so looking forward to my stopover and several pints of Cheddar Valley. Funnily enough you can get Cheddar Valley in The Railway in Southend!

this time early october another good two hours in the cider bar which i enjoy after pints of sams weston rosie i had enough to drink one thing prices have seem to a lot more expensive than 12 months ago

Despite living within 10 minutes of Shropshire's cider house and always being a cider fan, this was my first visit to one of the country's 4 cider houses. As you enter the smell of the alcohol and apples is overpowering. However, several ciders later we had got used to it. There's no beers here - only ciders (from the cask and bottles), fruit wines (also from the cask) and a few spirits and soft drinks. I worked my way through the 5 ciders I had never tried and a couple of others too. The highlight for me was the 8% Wiscombe Suicider. Thatcher's Diesel (Cheddar Valley) seemed to be the most popular with the locals. Amongst others, there were Westons Perry, LBW, Old Rosie, Stowford Press & Vintage Reserve, Thatchers Katy, Thatchers Extra Dry, Sam's Dry, Sam's Medium, Poundhouse (Sam's), Taunton Natch, Kingstone Press and even cans of Blackthorne and Olde English. The interior is quite tired, but it creates an amenable atmosphere. However the hard wooden benches and 'barrel' stools are not conducive to a long session. The toilets left a lot to be desired and the one barman had a tendency to serve only his favourite customers first. This place was definitely the most popular we had been to and I wouldn't hesitate to return. In fact I did the following morning for a take-out!
|
Absolutely brilliant. a great experience and well worth going into Newton Abbot for, in fact the only reason for going into Newton Abbot.
|
Wonderful place! Only bar in Britain still that has only an "apple" licence I think, i.e. they cannot sell beers, spirits etc.
Never seems to change here which is just great, sit back with a pint of Cheddar Valley and enjoy a good chat ... just like it should be. Brilliant range of fruit wines on sale too as well as the cider & perry. If you are looking for a nice bottle of Magners over ice or one of those fancy "pear" ciders then don't even bother coming in here as you will be laughed out of Devon! :-)
|
been in twice this week last time before that about 5 years ago brillant cheap and very good cider the best licenced premises in devon
|
An excellent cider house!
The earlier reviewers' comments re. women not being served pints must be out af date. My wife has never had any problem over buying pints here. However, she knows her ciders - possibly the staff have been encouraging women who were obviously novices at real cider to try halves.
|
Brilliant place if you like cider, and well worth a visit even if you dont. Just about the only reason for any reasonable person would have for visiting Newton abbot.
|
A top pub without any beer? Yes the cider selection alone makes it one of the regional greats in my opinion. Isn't the West Country supposed to have lots of such places? Sadly, it does not. If you don't care for cider you have your choice of many "wines" such as Elderflower, Strawberry, Parsip, etc.
Nothing fancy going on here, low wooden benches, tables and stools. Flooring a mix of parquet in some spots, concrete in others.
I was waiting at the bar to get another drink and I overheard one bloke say to his mate: That's it, I'm moving to Newton Abbot.
|
What a great place this was! Friendly staff + punters. The finest selection of fruity treats in the south of England. Nothing but apple and fruity goodness served up in an atmosphere drenched in history and tradition. Had a memorable pint or five there in October. Just watch out for the hyperactive ghost in the garden ;D Wish I could pack the whole place up in a case and transport it back to Londinium, but no can do, guess I will have to look 4wd to the summer ;)
|
I really can't stress too much how good this place is. As has been remarked, the exterior hardly looks inviting but step through the door and - after a slight feeling of having fallen through a time warp - you will find an extremely friendly establishment with a quite unique character. Excellent ciders to suit all tastes and a range of delicious fruit wines (not just for the ladies!) not to mention a selection of snuffs! If you only visit one establishment in Newton Abbot, a town which seems to have more than its fair share of pubs, this is the one to choose.
|
This is one not to be missed! Even the most dedicated beer drinker should be able to find a drinkable cider here, I did!
|
I WILL NOT HAVE A BAD WORD SAID ABOUT THIS ESTABLISHMENT. I'M PROUD TO LIVE IN THE SAME TOWN AS THIS ESTABLISHMENT. BIT MUCH PERHAPS!!! BUT IF YOU HAVE NEVER VISITED THE CIDER BAR AND LIKE CIDER YOU ARE MISSING OUT. GREAT ATMOSPHERE, FRIENDLY STAFF AND LOCALS, STONKING CIDER. AN INSTITUTION.
|
I had the pleasure of being introduced to the Wine coolers at the cider bar at the end of my trip to Devon, needless to say, it was a great finale, walking straight upon leaving is not an option! Great atmosphere/friendly staff/customers. Real spit and sawdust. loved it!
|
After visiting this pub on Saturday, I think I now have a new favourite.
Superb ciders and no beers to get in the way. Extremly reasonable prices, a lovely open farmhouse-y feel to it and even comemorative t-shirts to be purchsed.
Special mention must go to the gallon of diesel take out, which went down particularly well afterwards!
|
Went here in June 2005. Went to 19 pubs in Newton Abbot and this was the 18th. We are all lager drinkers and asked for a pint of the strongest cider they sell. They gave us the strongest which was bottled cider. It was gorgeous and got us all in a right mess. Very friendly people in the pub and very friendly bar staff.
|
If you're exclusively a beer drinker, and don't have any sense of adventure with regards your drinking, avoid this place entirely. If, on the other hand, you want to sample artisan ciders in an atmosphere as 'authenic' as you're likely to find in a town pub, you're in for a treat. Ignore the (frankly quite off-putting) shabby exterior and you enter a basic but loveable local pub which sells cider from the wood, country wines, and the odd spirit - but NO BEER. A surprisingly diverse crowd, too.
|
Stunning cider pub (fruit wines if you wish) with prices @1.60 per pint (1.30 for takeaways) saying it all.
|
Proper Craft Cyder on sale

Cidre Merveilleux De Mtier Disponible Ici. Chat Suprieur

It takes a little finding but it is well worth it. Excellent pub and they sometimes sell pints to women... (-;

One of the few classic cider houses left in the country. Just remember to call the landlord Mr Nibbs! He gets offended by Nibsy or Richard so I'm told.

GENUINE CIDER AT VERY REASONABLE PRICES, PLUS A HAM OR CHEESE ROLL - BRILLIANT!!! AND FOR THE WIFE, FRUIT WINES! THE DOWN-SIDE WOULD BE THE SEATING.
|
This is a classic serving only Cider and fruit wines. Nibsy, the landlord continues to run the place as he has for years. Ladies may have half pints but it is not proper to serve them full pints, thank you. Pies and sandwiches are either home made or come fresh from Cornwall. I got a pint of cider, large damson (fruit Wine) and Chicken/Mushroom pie for under a fiver. Can't be beat.

A friend of mine took me there and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of having such a wide selection of cyders. It is sort of a "must" for those who like cyder better than ale.

You wont find many pubs like this with a trade consisting primarily of Real Cider (some people call it scrumpy!) A basic pub but if in Newton Abbot a visit is a must just for the experience.
