The Millstone was my favourite of the 3 pubs I tried in Hathersage. It's located just outside the town to the east. Black Sheep Best Bitter & Peak Ales Millstone Best appear to be the regular beers. Guests were Abbeydale Deception & Bradfield Farmer's Blonde. There is no real cider. The pub has a nice location, with a car park opposite on the other side of the main road. A number of diners were arriving as I was leaving.

The Millstone is now under new ownership. The accommodation prices have gone up. The food menu is now quite limited, and nowhere near as well cooked and they haven't got the beer selection they used to. The breakfast has also shrunk in portion size. Thankfully, some things remain the same - They are still very dog friendly and Linda is still serving breakfast - Ya rite duk........

Stayed at this pub for three nights. The room was very clean, neat and tidy. Could do with a new mattress as the one we had was a bit squeaky. The food, breakfast and dinner, was really good. The staff, really accommodating, polite and helpful. The chef on one of the nights and the following breakfast was not too good at reading orders though. Dog friendly, Oh yes - Very. The beer, all that I tried was in good condition and appeared to be kept well. The Millstone Ale was a particularly good brew.

I used to need to stay in Hathersage quite a bit some years back, and always found it lacking for decent straightforward pubs, for no clear reason.
Reading this and other pubs' reviews suggests things have, if anything, got worse.
You'd have thought, given the setting, you couldn't go wrong, but maybe that explains the take-it-or-leave-it stance in a number of places.
It's taken Hathersage off my stopping-off list though.

On Tuesday 8 March, visited the MILLHOUSE on a beautiful spring afternoon with panoramic views over the Peak from the pub car park. Entered this large stone built edifice and ordered Farmers Blond for a rather expensive 3.10 but the quality was excellent. A number of other brews were available that day but only had time to sample one. Ordered food from the extensive menu. Didn't fancy a main me so me and the wife tried 3 starters: Mushroom Soup 3.95, Crab & Prawn Cocktail 5.50, Fish cakes 5.20. All home cooked if a tad expensive. SUM UP: A welcoming Peak District small hotel with a fine selection of real ales but remember to bring a wad or your cards to pay.

Went there last night and wish we hadn't bothered now. Got there and ordered a lasagne and a sirloin steak (cooked rare). What arrived was almost definitely a rump steak and was cooked medium to well-done.
Here's the thing. No-one came over to check on our food once it had been presented. Having been asked to go to the bar to order, pay in advance (9 for a lasagne) and then collect my own cutlery and condiments on the way to a table was I now expected to perform my own courtesy check and ask myself if everything was satisfactory with my meal? Well. In short. Yes I was. No-one around us had any sort of courtesy check offered either.
No courtesy check means no communication between the front of house staff/management, the customer and the kitchen. Simple mistakes cannot be rectified in time and failed customers, like myself, will have a bad experience and leave disappointed. This is a basic principle of customer service.
If I was the person from the AA who awarded it 4 stars I'd be having a word with myself. Or Gordon Ramsey (if I had his number).

The best pub food we have had in ages, and some very good beers. One was not quite perfect, but was changed without question for another from a new cask. The barmaid was very friendly and welcoming. Live music after our meal and the views outside made the evening complete.

I used to really like this pub but things have gone downhill recently I think. Beware of "happy hour" - the drinks are the same price as usual but you are given a voucher which entitles you to 50p off your next pint if you order it when happy hour is over! - an original ploy but cheeky.

The menu is to big to be fresh but food is ok. Went to the Sir William in the next village , Grindleford. Not as busy but the food is absolutly spot on, do lots of offers for walkers etc and the food was fresh. Go there instead

There was a range of non-standard bitters on handpump, but they were a bit variable in quality. The menu is expansive, but the quality was only average. Location is good, but it is by a busy road. There is a complex arrangement for groups who wish to dine, whereby only four combinations of starters and mains can be ordered. There is also an additional 10% service charge for groups. I would recommend the Scotsmans' Pack in Hathersage as a better pub for food.

Sorry for this, but I wasn't so overwhelmed by this pub. There is a range of Real Ales, but the ones I had were decidedly tired and there is a constant smell of cooked food in the air, chips, vinegar, fish, they could do with a better extraction system. Obviously popular for its location, but it sits on a very busy road. There are better pubs nearby.

Excellent pub, great food, great beer (lots of guests, particularly Kelham Island) and a great quiz on Friday nights.

This is pub is absolutely amazing - its location is stunning, providing ample and far-reaching views of the beautiful Peak District. Only eight miles from Sheffield, this pub is welcoming with very friendly and efficient staff. The portions are absolutely huge and reasonably priced, food is also of a good quality. The Sunday Carvery is apparently also excellent. Booking recommended, particularly on a Sunday as it undoubtedly popular. Nice interior too. Very highly recommended and will be going again.

Amazing pub with a lovely view of the peak district, has a pub and a separate restaurant, had a lovely sunday roast here with my girlfriend, be advised this pub gets very busy so booking may be adviseable, food here is brilliant you won't go hungry here.
