Great character pub. with not bad beer.
Must agree with comments that sometimes it appears to be run by the kids, but definitely worth a visit.
I'm a regular at The Rose and thank god it is one of only two Pubs in the area that still show Sky Sports. It is a very friendly/lively Pub, especially during the football season. Contrary to the previous derogatory comment, it is NOT FULL of badly behaved children.
Avoid at all costs on Sunday lunchtime during the football season. Full of noisy football supporting types with young brats. Didn't try the real ale as not keen on Pride or Youngs; had a pint of lager and got out. Went down to the Star - far better pub altogether.
Had a pint in here on my way back from our trip along the river. Nice pub and able to show Sky Sports 3D I was quite impressed.
However service was very slow and several of the beers were out of stock.

This was the pub in which I had my first (ileagal) pint back in 1972 and, being close to the station, seemed the obvious place to start a mini crawl of Godalming on Saturday afternoon.
This is a very traditional back street boozer, now done out in wood panelling and floor boards and different levels through the bar, even as it's a pretty small pub, back in the 70s it was a riot of Formica!
Young's Ordinary and London Pride were on tap, alongside an array of the usual keg rubbish. A tv at each end of the bar seemed a bit eccessive in such a small pub especially as they were each tuned to a different sport.
Unfortunatly I will have to award the Rose & Crown a zero rating, as the pub was completely deserted at 13:40 on a Saturday lunchtime and I stood at the bar like a lemon for five minutes coughing and basically making as much of a row as possable to attract someone but with absolutely no result.
What is the point of a pub where you can't get a drink?
A classic 'station boozer' in every sense. Some of the customers need to calm the language but the landlord is a great character. Hear he has been unwell, get well soon Mike.
Excellent spot by the station to sample a quick pint before moving on. Only downside is there isnt much to keep people here, hardly full of life but not too shabby nontheless.
I'd also agree that this is the best bar in Godalming. Lovely inside and out with a cosy leafy beer garden. An old pub but modern too. Guiness is great!
Friendly traditional pub that has regular live music. Good atmosphere and landlord. Well worth the visit. In my opinion the best pub in Godalming.
If visiting Godalming for the first time this is the first pub you shall see. Pop in for a pint as it is not too bad.
Popped in last Sunday night, quite quiet. Doombar was excellent, barman seemed quite friendly. All in all a nice little pub. Will be visiting again soon.
If your gagging for a nice quiet drink after getting off the train? turn right out of Godalming station and this friendly, unpretentious little pub is a couple of hundred yards on the left well worth a visit.
Did surrey pub man visit both bars then?
Closest of the pubs to the station, so best for a late night drink.

Popped in recently. Only one of the three real ales was on, but still had a good night. Very good atmosphere, enjoyed a game of darts and the beer that was on was well kept. Beware - the toilets are freezing cold and you have to cross a courtyard to get to them.
I really like this pub good to see place`s like this still about small yes but very relaxed.Beer well kept.
Wondeful little pub. Served an excellent pint of Doombar.

Was in the pub last weekend, small boozer quite popular in the evenings, shows Sky and Setanta sports, great atmospher during the games. Has Doombar and Pride and a good range of lagers, staff friendly. Will be in there for the Rugby World Cup games.
Went in here on Saturday afternoon. An overwhelming smell of the toilets when you walk out to the garden. Has the potential to be a very attractive pub, shame it isn't.
i think is a really nice very cosy place to bring ur mates in to watch the footy on plasma screens, i have recently stayed at there Establishment which nice very nice i think of the best in godalming and i highly Recommended
Really nice little pub. The only problem is the permanently pissed-up regulars that hog the bar. They always go quiet when anyone new comes in. Makes you feel like your crashing someone else's party. That kind of thing can be bad for business in a pub. Especially one that can pick up a lot of passing trade from hot, hassled and tired train commuters. Still a nice little pub especially on a summer's evening.
Been in here a couple of times never been offered a quick one, must be doing something wrong.
Not very spacious but alright for a quick one
The R&C is an ideal meeting place not far from Godalming station, where friends can get together and down copious amounts of beer, lager and excellent wine,in a cosy, friendly, unpretentious atmosphere. Spent many a Saturday & Sunday afternoon downing pints with my mates while watching Sky Sports on the plasma screens. Psst. don't tell everyone though, the pub is quite small and is one of Godalming's best kept secrets OK?
I love this little pub and wish it were my local. It is small but has an amazing patio area and good big garden. Inside there are the comfy sofa area going on and the staff have always been friendly and chatty.
A very friendly, cosy pub. Great if you have just got off the train and fancy a quick pint or 3 before you head off home, the free wireless connection is nice touch. Good for watching Sky footy, even if you are a Liverpool supporter. Staff are helpfully, the locals are a happy enough bunch and the beer is good too. Only problem is the out side lavs.
THIS PUB REALLY IS PRETTY GOOD. A LITTLE CRAMPED WHEN BUSY BUT NOT BAD AT ALL. FRIENDLY OWNER, OPEN FIRE, GOOD TERRACE AND GARDEN. RATHER A BRACING OUTSIDE LAV DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. BUT ALL IN ALL VERY WORTH A VISIT.
I was last here on my 16th birthday in 1999, when it was Frank and Marilyn running the place, and it was rather charmingly stuck in a time warp back to the 1950's. I remember getting absolutely lashed and throwing up in the patio.
Not very spacious here, but they show sport which is a plus. Also some uniqueness in its beer range with Doom Bar

There are now three handpumps installed, with Deachars IPA, Fuller's London Pride and Sharp's Doom Bar available.
I heard it was back to a pub, tried it and had a choice of one real ale!! I was last at the Rose in the late eighties, trying out five excellent beers, they say you should never go back. Still, better than a so-called Wine Bar!

The 'Rose and Crown' is now open again as the 'Rose and Crown' after a very brief period trading as 'Shades Wine Bar'.
The walls have be repainted yet again, this time in more traditional pub type colours and the open fire has been reintroduced. For those wishing to see very green colour of the interor walls during the 'Shades era', the decor around the rear exit of the pub has been left unchanged.
For Real Ale fans, Fullers London Pride is on offer and they are threatening to install a second hand pump which will dispense a regularly changing ale.

Now called Shades or to the better informed (The Godalming FC ) And yes, if you are patial to spartan, mint green, very quiet wine bars, this is the very place for you! The South African staff are pleasant and "Jahra Man" a good working knowledge of africaan`s does could come in handy when ordering a beer. An unusual concept... Still anything's better than Rogues?
Ming the Merciless - 9 Sep 2004 21:07 |
Rose and crown is now open and is called 'Shades' its an ok pub, owned by the same people as sports bar, but is an over 25s (yeah right) and has Kim running the place. Quite quiet and the walls are very green. very very green.

Closed for some time now. Rumours of new ownership but nothing has happened for a while.
gge - 10 Jul 2004 11:26 |
Absolutely terrible.
Was once lovely old pub now badly renovated 'modern' look ( stripped boards etc ) that has only succeeded in removing all charm and character from the place.
Over 25's policy means its empty and has no atmosphere whatsoever. Very expensive and no proper beer.
Richard - 27 Apr 2004 11:36 |
Fun/friendly atmosphere, think the over 25's rule is only to discourage the rougher kids and not strictly adhered to. Could have spent a few more quid in redecorating when the pub closed.

The Old Rose & crown ws originally established in 1860 by a John Atfield. Was one of Godalming's more idiosyncratic pubs, now a wine bar... shame.
Sen - 22 Oct 2003 23:56 |
Been since it become Rogues, and it has a lovely, calm, relaxed atmosphere, and some great live music!
Strictly over 25s?! Not so sure about that one - no-one on the door to check... didn't have a problem with me being there at the age of 23...
Great atmosphere and a wide range of wines available.
K - 15 Jul 2003 15:12 |
Sorry to the locals but the Rose and Crown was no longer viable due to lack of trade. It is now part of Rogues Wine Bar a privately run family business, that has been trading for 18 years. Strictly over 25s and run on the same lines as Rogues of Guildford!!!
P aul Messent(owner) - 1 May 2003 16:40 |
Yep!! All gone, now a wine bar in pastel yellows. Pity, BUT the Anchor down the road towards Milford has new landlords, Willy and Dave who the same ideas as me as to what a pub should be, I.E. like the Rose used to be.
KP - 24 Feb 2003 22:58 |
its shut and is now a wine bar

Very small traditional pub selling Badger beers plus guest ales. "Open Mike evenings every other Friday, bring an instrument or just sing us a song.
Active Darts teams on a Tuesday evening, good fun.
