Bel and The Dragon, Godalming

I used to go here a lot but this business is clearly in its death throws. Arrived on Sunday afternoon and was met by a harrassed and unhappy-looking staff member who made no eye contact and simply nodded when we asked for a 'table for two'. We waited in vain for service, so I went up to the unstaffed bar to see if I could figure out what bottled bitter/ale they might have. I couldn't see what beer they had as the bar was stacked with unwashed empty glasses so I sat down again. Place looked a bit scruffy, prices have gone up on the food whilst the variety of dishes and the actual number of staff has dropped. Eventually, when it became clear that we weren't going to get served we just got up and left. The diners looked sympathetic, the few staff we could see didn't bat an eyelid. Went round the corner to the pub at 5 Wharf St. Needless to say the contrast was striking: food was excellent ( very nice roast pork belly with a pint of Doombar) and the staff were really friendly.

The White Horse, Hascombe

Was charged 3.45 for a pint of Tribute tonight. Is this a record? This pub's prestige is not equal to its premium.

The Merry Harriers, Hambledon

Nice to see how well this pub has come along in the last year or so. Very friendly staff and a great selection of ales and cider. The management at the White Horse in neighbouring Hascombe should take notice as this pub shows good attention to detail but most importantly it delivers consistently. Moreover, the beer garden catches plenty of evening sun in summer - a lovely place to visit with some terrific walks to be had just beyond the front door.
