Unassuming Samuel Smiths pub on a terraced side street. The pub has a welcoming atmosphere in its two small rooms. One was being used for an evening of dominoes, whilst the other seemed to be where the local dogs hung out (the four-legged variety)! I was introduced to one friendly creature. Old Brewery Bitter is available on cask. I quite liked the atmosphere in here and would certainly pay another visit if around here.

Although only OBB on handpull as it's a Sam Smiths tied pub it's a must to visit. Double fronted in design it had 1 bar room and 2 other parlour rooms. A pint and half cost us £2.70 in case you needed further temptation. It's outside the City Wall but an evening stroll alongside the river to which it is close is recommended.

A step back in time; a friendly pub and a decent pint of OBB.

Cask OBB @ 1.46 per pint, which was in good form excellent terraced pub no pool table now great service, very warm

Vary small and cozy local pub hidden in the middle of a housing estate. One bar, one pool room and a snug at the back. At weekends its full of locals and students beacuse the OB bitter is 1.43 a pint. most stuff on offer is Sam Smiths which is fine if you dont mind drinking OB all night. I found the staff and the locals very friendly and will visit agian when in the area.

Locals' pub half a mile or so south of the city centre, splendidly located as part of a Victorian terrace in an attractive suburban street, and far away enough to completely avoid the tourist hordes. I It's the usual highly traditional Sam Smiths' boozer, with a central tiled corridor as you enter giving access to 3 rooms- the bar to your left, games room to your right (both rooms stone flagged) and a pleasant snug room at the back, with carpeting and traditional furnishings. The corridor also has access to the bar via a servery. All rooms have the glow of a real fire. The games room has a pool table which is unusual for a Smiths' pub- it is also very difficult to use given the size of the room! OBB as usual the only bitter, it seemed to taste better than usual here and went down extremely well. A great secret that I'm loath to reveal, but any lover of traditional pubs should head here if spending any decent amount of time in York. The terrace on which the pub is located is a pleasant 15 minute stroll down the river from the centre and close enough to include as part of a crawl along with the Seahorse and Lighthorseman, two other traditional pubs that feature in the York Historic Pub Guide- a good read.

Not a pub you'll just happen across as it is a nestling in the middle of a residential street just off the beaten track. But I urge all connoisseurs of good, back-to-basics locals to make the effort. Not only will you be rewarded with the ever reliable, and astoundingly cheap Sam Smiths beer in a simple, three roomed, no frills, terraced pub, but you'll also be enjoying it in the company of an extremely nice set of regulars - at least they were for my visit. I was made to feel very welcome by both staff and punters alike. That goes along way in my book. Highly recommended.

I'll say this first: not only the cheapest but also by far the best pint of cask OBB in York, and possibly anywhere else. I've never had a bad pint of bitter in here, and I must be into high double figures by now. The atmosphere is frozen from a bygone age, with small front bar and a snug little back room. Unwaveringly loyal crowd of regulars (almost all locals, with the odd smattering of students on their best behaviour) who although a little wary at first are a perfectly amiable bunch if you get them talking. Add to all this the highly jocular Steve and the highly formidable Dawn (who secretly has a heart of gold), and you've got my favourite pub in the whole bloody world. Long may it prosper.

A nice original pub,dog friendly till Fri night.Good beer and quiz on Sunday.Worth staying for a game of click afterwards, particularly if the landlord calls the cards.Dont expect the locals to be friendly if you cant be bothered to speak to them.

Yes called in to a nice little SS pub still working with no entertainment for the customers cheap beer but customers now expect to be treated with some intelligence. Barnsley v Chelsea would have been great to watch with a cheap pint but no tv. The place was empty the guy who runs these pubs is on a different planet

Nice little edge of town pub. Small three room layout, friendly bar staff and chatty regulars. Possibly the cheapest pints close to the city centre, can't beat it really.

1.18 a pint last time I went (Sam Smiths), and not a bad pint either. Free sandwiches after Sunday night quiz. Three rooms and patio, pool table, no music. Unique atmosphere and clientele including dog and old geezer.
