As I noted in November 2014 I really like this pub. My 2015 UK pub has just ended & I can only endorse my earlier opinion. I visited on 3 occasions this year, each time the place was reasonably crowded with spots fans (cricket, F1 & football), diners & drinkers and all were getting prompt & polite service. A bearded Irish bloke I took to be the manager took the time to commiserate with me over the cricket. I drank Pride on each visit, 3.35 & quite satisfactory. Top pub

I don't know what's happened to this place, we've been coming here for years and always found it to be a fairly decent place for food and drink. However on our most recent visit (2/1/15), it was the most shambolic pub experience I've ever encountered. Firstly the young lad behind the bar clearly didn't want to be there and had no concept of serving customers in the correct order. Also he is possibly the slowest barman I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. After finally managing to obtain a round of drinks we found a table and I made a visit to the gents. About halfway down the stairs the smell was disgusting and as I reached the bottom of the stairs I saw water running out of the gents and onto the wood floor outside. As I (stupidly) continued into the toilet the dirty water was at least an inch deep in places. Environmental health would have a field day here. Back upstairs we ordered some food which arrived after about 45 mins, some warm some cold but edible. My partner and son decided that they would have a pudding so I off I went to be ignored at the bar for another 20 mins. When the puddings eventually arrived they both had custard when I had specifically asked for one with ice cream as my son doesn't eat custard. When enquiring about this I was told they haven't got any ice cream. Upon leaving I asked the disinterested barman if the landlord was away at the moment to which he replied yes. Let's hope he gets back soon while the place is still standing. There seems to be similar reviews appearing on trip advisor recently as well so this clearly wasn't a one off.

I really like this pub. Came across it a few UK pub crawls ago, and always drop in, more than once, on each visit since. I can think of no outstanding feature; but it has the basics well covered. And its cheap! Pints of Pride for 3.15 on a couple of visits, and a Greene King IPA for 2.75 on another. Well sorted for sport, tasty pub food, cheap beer and only a stone's throw from Oxford Street.
|
A good pub to go to for food and for sport, as it has many fair sized flat screen TV's in there and normally have sports on them, especially football. Not sure which company run it. For a pub in central London it is quite big and has a seating area. It even had a pool table too at one point, which is very rare for central London. Very clean and well mantained, get just ordinary people in there, also has a Juke Box, although I never see anyone using it. I would say easily up in the top three of best pubs in Soho.

What a huge difference since the refit / new management! Really lovely staff who seem to actually give a shit about their jobs - preety unusual in central. Great for sports, whether it's a big football game or some obscure tennis match.
|
Nice enough pub. Does have a tendency to get VERY busy of a weekend especially if there's a game on. Friday night atmosphere is great and the food is your standard pub fare. Avoid if you're not into sports.
|
cheap and cheerful. Decent place to watch football in soho 5/10
|
was in on saturday, waited for ages to be served 4 pints and 4 burgers, pints all needed top-ups, burgers all needed re-naming as they def were not burger as we know it.
Hopefully this place is one of the M&B pubs sold to stonegate, maybe they will do something with it. This place make weatherspoons look posh!

Visited on bank holiday monday for the first time in about 18 months. The pub was busy late afternoon/early evening with lots of punters eating after facing Oxford Street and Soho, and both the Blackburn v Arsenal match and Twenty20 cricket were on, but not overshadowing a good atmosphere. Everyone in the group mentioned how reasonable the prices were, helped by the house bitter (EPA? my memory is a bit hazy) being 1.99 a pint - twenty yards from Oxford St! Both that and the Black Sheep were in good condition but the draught Amstell was coming up very frothy and top ups were needed. All in all still a sound choice for the area.
|
Fairly big pub where you can hide when tha missus is shopping on Oxford St!! Was rammed when the football was on but cleared out after. Food was OK, when I went on Friday nite the DJ was a bit cheesy (lots of Spanish music?) but made up for it with the cheap beer.
|
It's a buzzing pub and ridiculously cheap for central London. The bar staff are hilarious and you can get a pint for 2!
I'm not too bothered the ale being not quite CAMRA standard - you boring pub nerds need to come down on a Friday night and see what a good time everyone is having. They do offer at least two ales and two ciders on draught at any time and a double vodka is 3.09. More fun than a wetherspoons with better food.
A bit studenty but nice if you want somewhere to watch the sports. Obviously UK footballs's the main thing but they also show rugby and La Liga. Pool tables out of action during matches because of space but you never usually have to wait for a game.
|
By far the poorest beer of the pubs we visited. The pub itself was ok - very large and Arsenal/Portsmouth on every monitor. There was only two beers on handpump and the bartender was not positive about either one. Settled for Greene King IPA had never read anything good about the beer, and now know why. Cheap at about 2.40, but lousy taste. Service was fine and we had a nice conversation from a worker from Liverpool.
|
I have to say I echo those who say 'it used to be a great pub' because it WAS! I was a regular for years. New owners mean worse food and the most shocking thing is on my last 4 trips there, there has been no soap in the women's bathroom, so I can't bear to think of the female staff serving pints and cooking food without having washed their hands. No soap one time? OK, not great . But four times in a row? That's just bad management. They have lost another regular!
|
Average soho boozer - nothing special but nothing bad either. Decent cheap food
|
Pretty big bar and seat section other side of divide, heaving on a Friday night, yelling, shouting, kissing, yakking - mostly young crowd, v Soho mix. The sport news on telly, cheapish beer - all the normal ones. Was fine for a coupla beers.
|
A little bit of paint and some cleaning in the toilets still doesnt disguise an absolute crap hole of a pub. manager is a northern tosspot with a chip on his shoulder. once a lovely pub with good people running it, now a waste of me.
a 1 for the fact we were served the beer we asked for
|
A crap house. Went in last night and stood at a none too busy bar for 15 minutes without getting served by the useless staff. When you cant get a drink in a pub whats the point in going?
|
The Green Man is not the great pub it used to be pre refurb in the '90s, but I popped in one busy Sunday afternoon in the run up to last Christmas. We were served quickly and efficiently, the beers, though from a limited range, were fine, the food was good and the pub was comfortable though busy with shoppers, tourists and punters watching two football matches. Ideal for refugees from (the very close) Oxford Street.

AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL!!!! The only way to describe this place. Me and my friends work around the corner and used to go there regularly until recently. The food has become rubbish, the staff are incredibly rude and even though we were regulars we were treated like rubbish and it felt that our custom was not valued. The final blow was when we went to the pub (on a Tuesday) and the staff obvously couldn't cope. We ordered food which when finally arrived was incorrect and disgusting. We they brought it back after a third time was finally asked for our money back as we then had to return to work. We were subjected to a load of abuse from the rude staff. Not what you look for in a pub! We used to overlook the countless other defects of this pub, such as the wine which is never chilled (fridge is probably broken), the grotty toilets and the inefficiency of the staff. It's an ok pub for tourists (the staff don't care if you return so can be as rude as they like) . But if you are looking for a lunchtime work local, there are plenty of places which deserve your custom!

That is strange The_Pub_Inspector as I went in here with my wife the day before your post (6th November 08) and I had London Pride (which the barmaid topped up when asked as not quite full) and my wife had a pint of Guiness and both drinks were fine. Due to its location it is a busy pub and food was being served and nobody had to wit long and all appeared very happy. No problems with the gents for me, I visited at lunchtime. The atmosphere was good and the seats were comfortable and we had a nice rest from shopping.

What has happened here? , I go away for 6 months and coming back one of my favourite pubs, I find massive changes. The pool table has gone, all the flags and colour have gone, leaving a very drab pub. I asked for a pint of pride. it was disgusting. and the barman had the cheek to reply "what is wrong with it" , my obviously near retching face wasnt enough to get the message across. I changed to a Guinness which wasnt much better, this is surprising as the beer was always good here. I had a burger for lunch and it came quite quickly. it was however on par with the beer , total rubbish. On inspection , toilets were flooded and the gents cubilce was blocked and seemed to be a rubbish tipping ground and not in use for some time. Im assuming there is no control here at the moment, none of the staff wanted to ake responsibility and the manager was apparently not around. This was such a good pub before, The old manager may have been a bit gruff sometimes but at least the pub was in far batter shape than now. wony be back for a long time now, will stay around the corner at the george.

a bit of an update
i have resigned from the green man due to serious issues with my area manager and for the way which Mitchells and Butlers are treating the non branded sites within our pubgroup.
its impossible to run this pub without the support of an experienced area manager and Im not prepared to continue to try to do so.
i pity the mug who will take the place on.

Marylong and lewis1, you so obviously full of Sh*t. This is still a very good pub, the beers are always spot on , the food is not "typical M&B" ( although what is typical m&b). Our toilets are constantly being worked on and are cleaned hourly. As for no soap! Hello to the young lady who was caught by our security staff trying to steal a full handsoap from the ladies toilet....very sad !!!!!
finally to the point of the landlord. Me!!!
I dont stand on the end of the bar with a pint in hand, in fact I rarely drink during opening hours in my own pub. If I am arrogant , its because of people like you wasting my time when I could be serving decent customers (99.9%). As for my letching: Being nice and helpful to customers doesnt constitute letching unless you are the dogsbreath muckhole most men would ignore and are clearly jelous of attention that others receive.
If you are unhappy about me , my staff , my pub , or any part of our offer , please feel free to clean yourself up , and come in for a chat , prior to attempting to drink yourself into popularity.
To anyone reading this review , please feel free to drop in , say hello , and enjoy our pub with us.
cheers all
Phil

I totally agree with the other comments. This used to be a good pub, the manager is arrogant waste of space who props up the end of the bar with his pint in tow, while ogling the ladies. As for the fizzy water, good selection but i had to return my drink twice because it was flat. Food..... Just like a typical M&B, deep fried or mirowaved. only fresh produce they use is salad!!!
|
This used to be a really good pub, good atmosphere and friendly and helpful bar staff etc,but since the arrival of the new landlord it's gone downhill. The toilets are disgusting, never clean,no soap etc. I can't believe they will charge for the football final. The landlord is a letch,I advise all women to give this pub a wide birth!!!!
|
major cahnges in this pub , 2 sky boxes means loads of sports, always got 2 good ales on + 7 lagers, good musci on non sports nights , with live music introduced last month , the place rocked , next dand is said to be 1st friday in march. A lot busier than ever before , prepared to be jammed. n.b , get in early for football as the place holds 250 but only has seating for 80
The staff arn't rude , they are just too busy to be mucked about by morons who forget to bring cash on a busy sports night.
Oh yeah and champions league final is 5 door charge limited to 200 pers so there will be comfort room for all.
|
this used to be a great pub, however now i find the customer service is terrible and very rude, the gents cubicle has no latch or lock and hasnt for over six months when i questioned why i was told they wouldnt put one on as they have had problems, surely they need to address their security problems rather than expect customers to have no privacy? i found on several occassions the staff to be rude and its a shame because it could be a good bar.

Decent enough place for watching footy when you're in town. On a Champion's League Wednesday the other night they had Man Utd on one set of screens and the Arsenal match on some others. Which is nice. The grub is standard pub fare but the selection of beers is better than some places (although not outstanding). Gets busy but it's big enough to handle it. It used to be the only normal pub open late at the weekends but with the extended licesing hours now I'm sure there are planty of others. It's a trek downstairs to the lavs but at least the (only) cubicle in the bloke's has full a length locking door.

Good pint, game was on, friendly staff. we liked it.
|
It's OK. Not a fan of the interior really, the prices are decent and it has a decent atmosphere too. Just decent all round. Staff are reasonable but not stand out - not to the degree I'd praise them openly on here anyway. In fairness I've only ever been there on Friday nights and it was packed every single time, so they were run ragged. 6/10

I popped in here for a quick pint during the day when I was in the area yesterday. The place was virtually empty so can't comment too much on what it gets like in the evening, but it was pleasant enough with nice back ground music. The place is split into two sections, one with wooden stools and the other with leather sofas. The Green Man has a nice layout. There is also a pool table at the back and there is the usual plasma screens showing Sky Sports, which almost compulsory in every pub Ive been in. The beer was VERY cheap and if thirsty when I'm in the area again, I'll certainly pay another visit.

The Green Man is just off Oxford Street and is frequented by a broard spectrum of people from local workers to shoppers. It serves a full menu until 9pm and offers a wide range of drinks at very reasonable prices! (Fosters 2 a pint!) It has Sky Sports shown on several screens, a pool table, quiz and fruit machines. Fridays there is a DJ from 9pm and the pub is open untill 1am.

10/10 - I once saw a yorkshireman down a pint of stella and then hurl it straight back into a pint glass, perfectly filling it. It doesnt get better than that. (Staff are great too)

This pub is a great one for when your feet get tired from walking arond Londons shopping districts, Situiated off of New Oxford Street where JD Sprots is on the corner. It has a nice friendly atmosphere the staff are always polite, it also has very good drinks prices with some amazing offers and the food is great value and of excellent quality all though the mains are slighty limited. It also shows all live sport or plays music.

I didn't want to touch her with yours because she was a limping frog goblin.
Erm, the Green does Caffreys too. There, I commented on the pub so this can't be deleted.
|
Well, why didn't YOU get off with her then sunshine! Mind you, having said that, there does seem to be a correlation between the number of times I've managed to get my hands on something, and the presence of 'Ruby'! Hmmmm, interesting. Weird but interesting.
Bomber - 4 Aug 2003 17:55 |
You got off with that American bird with a dodgy leg because I introduced you to them, sunshine. In the meantime, can someone find out their opening hours? If it's back to 2am Fri/ Sat, it really is bloody handy. Sometimes have DJs too.
Ruby - 17 Jul 2003 11:41 |
Got off with this American bird in there once who had a dodgy leg. So it can't be that bad.
Bomber - 16 Jul 2003 18:02 |
This place was the only ordinary looking pub in London that stayed open til 2am at the weekends for no discernible reason. Then it stopped doing that. Never found out why.
Ruby - 15 Jul 2003 10:57 |
Nice pub, nice staff and tasty french fries!
