user reviews of the Sheepwalk, Leytonstone

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Irish themed pub which does food, not particularly a good feel to it and having just moved locally will not be returning in a hurry, in the middle of Leytonstone, traffic hurtling passed all day.

Nice enough décor and the bar staff were friendly - but at the end of the day just another pub with big screens, and there are enough of them around already.

What used to set this pub apart from the crowd was the live music, always something going on upstairs, now that's gone...

With Luna Lounge, North Star and Red Lion within walking distance they need to do something special to get me back in there

Reportedly renamed yet again as Tommy Flynn's, with one real ale, but seems most of the music has gone elsewhere. The utterly-fab Whats Cookin club has moved down the road and round the corner to the Ex Servicemen's Club in Harvey Rd.

Dark, slightly sinister feel to this pub and you wouldn't necessarily feel that relaxed in here when it is busy. But the barman is welcoming and the beer was good. Now renamed as The Crown.
strangetorpor - 4 Oct 2013 17:10
Now reopened; looks just the same as it did before it closed. They'll need to up their game now Zulu's has been transformed and reopened as the Red Lion.
E17Bee - 13 Jul 2011 13:11
Been closed for several weeks, but apparently reopening shortly. Hope the new landlord puts some decent beer in....
E17Bee - 7 Jul 2011 12:30
Reported locally that licence is suspended for one month from 7th June.

I'm not generally one for posting adverse reviews, so I thought it was about time to change that. This place is perfectly convivial, and seems to have something of a tenuous Irish connection. They have Sky Sports, and a pretty mixed but down-to-earth crowd.

I've heard some comments about unpleasant characters drinking in there, but I personally have never seen any bother. I've got good memories of the place, but that's more to do with the people I was with rather than the venue.

It's not particularly awful, but it has to lose big marks from me just because of its appalling selection of beer. Fosters, Carlsberg Export, landfill Guinness... pretty woeful really.
Hotfoot - 15 Nov 2010 16:29
not keen on the people who go to this pub at all!! id rather pay extra money to travel into the city and watch the football around like minded people than to be around the low life in there
biggzman - 26 Aug 2010 16:37
Bit of a dive, that has music, some real desparate people frequent though, won't be rushing back, has it lost its licence yet?

Until I hear differ I would sooner go the W'spoons futher up the rd.
steviewonder - 16 Nov 2009 16:57
i heard they r having a few problems with there licence check out report on the guardian website a danger to kids they said

This place was dead when I visited on a hot Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks ago. The other two customers seemed to be enjoying the Magners and my Guinness was ok, but there is no real ale.

There is a dartboard, pool table and table football along with 3 large plasma screens for sports on Sky and GAA. The pub is a little sparse and I would imagine that most of its revenue is brought in during the live music nights which are advertised in a shabby fashion on the windows outside the pub.

I dont think that Ill be going in here again, unless Im in the area and need to pop in to check the distance from Leytonstone to Donegal from one of their handy mileage signs.
Strongers - 13 Jul 2009 13:27
The excellent Whats Cookin live-music nights upstairs are the best thing about this place. Otherwise there's no reason to stop off here, still less to linger. Pity, because it could be a really good all-round pub. At least the recent introduction of bottled Speckled Hen makes up slightly for the lack of real beer.
E17Bee - 20 Jun 2009 13:58
Get rid of the TV screens, improve the decor, employ a good chef, increase prices which should dissuade the unruly youth and die-hard drunks who seem to like this place. Recipe for success.

great pub, fantastic atmosphere, friendly bar staff, great community spirit, seems as though the problems of the past are being dealt with, The managment have a doorman to make sure people have the correct I.D and are over 18, fun lively atmosphere on friday nights with karaoke,
whats cooking are showcasing the best bands upstairs, and now even a comedy club on the last saturday of the month!!. all major sports events shown on the big screens, the best pub in leytonstone by a mile.

Used to drink here was I was 16/17 with my older brother, that was 25/26 years ago. It was called The Crown then and was a proper Irish pub. I'm surprised that they have a venue upstairs now, they couldn't years ago because of the listed (William Morris?) ceiling in the main bar area.
dalglish - 6 Oct 2008 10:45
Not a good pub. No real ale, shouty patrons and a television screaming out football that nobody was watching. Staff were OK.
Albert_Campion - 15 Sep 2008 16:03
tried this out again, beer was off, the staff make a big deal about serving you as if its beneath them, the food has gone, and a bunch of kids threatened to kill me if i didnt leave cos im not a proper eastender and they didnt want me on their turf. i think that the people who drink here deserve to drink here.
byronny - 21 Apr 2008 05:07
Well could'nt agree more with comment posted on 16th april, this place should be shut down immediately.

This used to be a half-decent pub that was popular, had good staff and served decent beer and food but in the last year or so has gone down hill dramatically!
Alot of the regulars have left, the food is virtually non-existent, the staff are less than adequate and the atmosphere has been completely lost, and that's before you even venture near the toilets - which get a mark of 0/10. Its only saving grace is the "What's Cookin'" music gigs that are held upstairs on Wed & Sat nights.
quietlad - 7 Feb 2008 13:28
I've seen two fights outside here over the last couple of years. Hardly makes yearn for the inside.
Albert_Campion - 9 Oct 2007 14:54
I was told good things about this place but when I visited I was very disappointed. Poor ber choice and a few hostile locals.
silentbob9484 - 24 Sep 2007 12:04
atmosphere gone down hill since the sarcastic irish bar staff left, and you don't see many of the regulars that use to drink there, nowadays. the lager tasted like it was past its sell by date the last time i went in, the toilets as ever are in a right state at nights. music quite good though prefer when they use to put it upstairs and give us a choice whether to go up and watch it or not. having said all this you can always get served and i would rather pay an extra 60p per pint than stand in a queue with all the kids in wetherspoons just up the road....no, don't get me started on wetherspoons.
breg1234 - 18 Jul 2007 05:08
Okay, I do like this pub a lot but can someone answer me why the hell Karaoke starts at 10.00pm on a Sunday night AND GOES ON FULL BLAST TILL 3.00am IN THE MORNING??! It's extremely annoying as I live very nearby and every Sunday night, it's the same thing. Don't these people have work Monday mornings??

Is this acceptable or illegal? I know all about the licensing laws but honestly, till 3am on a Monday morning??? That seems a trite excessive especially at the volume their karaoke is played!

Getting a real pain now, who do I complain to?
anonymous - 25 Jun 2007 12:06
quality pub, was in there a few days ago, irish guy behind the bar is funny fella, he was cracking up regulars like there was no tomorrow
king555 - 29 Aug 2006 14:01
Nice little mixer. Got tangled in there on Saturday - thoroughly enjoyable.
Lord_bangstick - 7 Feb 2006 15:01
Good pub with nice food and a friendly Irish landlady.
vera_shaw - 24 Nov 2005 14:28
What a wonderful pub - but why no Real Ale? But for that, it would be a 9 in my book, but I had to go over the road to Wetherspoons for a pint of the real stuff at halftime during the gig - so that makes it a mere 5 I'm afraid. Sorry guys.....
E17Bee - 17 Nov 2005 11:36
Fantastic free offbeat country and western night upstairs on Wednesday evenings (not August). Splendidly insane decor with gold curtains, plastic flowers, free sweets and a friendly crowd.
rach_17 - 29 Jul 2005 13:09
You don't get many locals as good as this place, great east London boozer which encapsulates Londons great diversity, great for food, drink and has a great atmosphere weather for a quiet chat or for watching sports, fantastic:-)
astonmartinmo1 - 11 Dec 2004 20:52
Well, I can recall about ten years ago when the pub was called the Crown there was some spooky things going on that pub..See, my mum used to be a cleaner in that pub and I used to go to work with her when I was feeling sick. My mum would put a glass on the bar at exactly the same place at half past ten in the morning and the glass would fly off and smash,,,The cellar is haunted too.

big Irish pub with original fetures. Friendly staff and they do a wicked Sunday Roast. Just happend to pop in as the pub over the road (were I was supposed to meet a mate)was packed. Ended up here instead.. and will be back!

This is a great pub with friendly staff and a brilliant atmosphere. It is full of friendly regulars & the beer is good too! Is well worth a visit and I will definetly be going back.
terrie - 8 Jul 2004 12:56
This is a half decent pub which is good for watching football and is good for a quiet drink. Lots of Irish regulars and a good pool table.
