Still a decent Wetherspoons with friendly & efficient staff, beers I had this time included Nottingham Brewery 'Extra Pale Ale' [very hoppy pint], Upham Brewery 'Autumn Leaves' [dark smooth fruity beer], Hogsback Brewery 'T.E.A.' [decent pint] & Woods 'Shropshire Lad' [nice smooth pint].

Fantastic breakfast to begin the sesh!

Decent enough Wetherspoons. Staff are pleasant, helpful & efficient; smoking area to the rear. Beers I indulged in included Long Man brewery ''Wild Man'' [decent pint], Prescott''s ''Hill Climb'' [citrusy & refreshing], Wood''s ''Shropshire Lad'' [very palatable], & 3 ales by Battlefield brewery ''1066'' [nice smooth dark ale], ''Saxon Gold'' [tasty, pleasant pint] & ''Sabut Jung'' [very tasty & refreshing @ 5.8% abv].

It’s been a few years since I last posted about this place, so I thought I’d better bring the story up to date. Although nothing in my previous review was actually incorrect, subsequent visits have shown it in not such a good light. At one stage, it was usual to see unoccupied tables piled high with empty plates / glasses that no-one was bothering to clear away, and (as Wezzielad said), the barstaff always served their own mates before anyone else – and completely ignored people at one half of the bar. Thankfully, a change of management, has meant that things have improved, but quality of service still depends on who is in charge that day.
Beer selection is variable, with less guest ales than some Spoons, but more than others. On my last visit I had the Lancaster Black. Unlike Wezzielad, I thought it was reasonable, but rather too cold for my liking.
Latest development seems to be a lot of normal tables and chairs replaced by high tables and bar stools. Also seemed to be darker than I remembered – but maybe that was just because it was such a miserable day outside.
6/10 – average Spoons, but with potential to be better.

I was surprised at the lack of local ales on here. None from what I could see and half of the ales were Greene King beers. Pretty decent obviously for cheapish food. I went for a pint of Lancaster Black and it tasted blandish really. I know though that this isn't the brewery as Lancaster is a brewery I rate, the ale was not well kept.

A Wetherspoons downstairs but comfy well priced rooms above.

Typical spoons affair with regular spoons furnishings. Pleased to report that it did offer a short relief from the average prices. 1.99 a pint to be exact! I sampled a pint of Festival Gold by a Welsh brewery called Waen. It was a light golden and hoppy and was very drinkable.
Pleasant barmaid serving behind the bar.
Worth a visit.

We started off our crawl of Shrewsbury with 2 Wetherspoons. This one was smaller than the nearby Montgomery's Tower and the range of beers was slightly limited. They also have that slightly annoying system in Wetherspoons where you have to form a queue at one end of the bar. I don't mind this, as long as they clearly state that that is what you need to do, rather than waiting for somebody to come and serve you for some time until the penny drops. Anyway, Spoons are always handy for a morning drink and they still had a fair range on - Wibblers Apprentice, Greene King Abbot & Ruddles Best & Woods Shropshire Lad. Cider was Westons Marcle Hill. Not really a destination pub. But worth a quick one if you're passing.

stayed here for the night rooms clean small but could do with a update, the real ales we tried in the bar were in decent condition the mild that was on good, but seems to lack a bit of atmosphere dosent seem to have all the pictures/historys ect you normally see in a weatherspoons.

We made a last minute decision to visit Shrewsbury for a few days and this hotel/pub was available at a reasonable price. The bar is typical Wetherspoons and my pint of Wood's Shropshire Lad was fine (the other beers were the dreaded Christmas ales which tend to be strong and often sweet and sickly). Our room was - how shall I say - straighforward? Small bedroom - with the tiniest double bed we have ever slept in - but good sized bathroom with a very effective shower!! TV and tea/coffee facilities which they top-up every day ( bottled water and biscuits as well). Double glazed so no noise from the busy road outside. It was OK and was very handy for what we wanted - a bed for the night with a hot shower. Breakfast was in the bar and was an extra but at 3.10 you couldn't complain! There is a car park and the hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk from the train station and not very far from the town centre. The Severn is across the road and there is a very pleasant walk round the river (with of course) pubs close to hand!!

This is one of the more upmarket Wetherspoons (yes, they do exist !). Possibly because the place is also a hotel, and is anexisting licensed premises, not converted from something strange. So has the feel inside of a proper pub.
The place inside is divided up into separate areas, and is furnished with a range of seating, including comfy settees and high stools, as well as chairs and tables. And those are in proper wood, not the normal identikit stuff. In places a more erudite atmosphere is provided by having bookshelves with books.
There were 3 or 4 guest ales on when I was there. I had a very nice pint of OHanlons Port Stout. Food ? Well I didnt eat, but you know the Spoons menu already !
7/10 better than I expected.

An above average Wetherspoons with friendly staff and some good beers including the wonderful Thornbridge Jaipur (5.9% abv). A useful halfway pit stop between the Salopian Bar and The Armoury.
|
Very pleasant and helpful staff - Brewsters Hophead @ 1.95 per pint was excellent - exterior more interesting than the interior
|
Excellent bar and great staff serving some very good beers. Stayed overnight - the room was very tired.
|
visited this pub last week, food was very good, excellent value. good choice of ales and also bottled beers especially Erdinger wheat beer.
|
Decent Wetherspoons pub but now generally playing second fiddle to Montgomery's Tower. Came here yesterday afternoon and enjoyed 3 pints of Jenning's Cocker Hoop Ale which were very good. Staff were quite friendly and the atmosphere OK (no music in JDW pubs obviously). Food also looked pretty appetizing too. A good place to be wined and dined, but it seems not as good as the new kid on the block, Montgomery's Tower.
|
If you want a Wetherspoons with a wide range of real ales, just head to Lower Claremont Bank (about 100 yards away!) and pop into Montgomery's Tower there!
|
Disappointing range of beers - Pedigree, Abbot and Ruddles, plus two guests, one of which was off, the other being a touch hazy. I've visited this pub a number of times over the years and have never had a decent pint.

Wife liked her wine , my pint (ruddles ok) , told food would be 15 mins and it was , it`s ot a bad jd

Staying at the Wetherspoons Lodge for 3 nights we had ample opportunity to experience The Shrewsbury Hotel. As one of the other contributors mentioned the pump clips were not turned round when the beer is not available. Very irritating especially when we asked the barmaid "Why?" & she just shrugged in a "don't really care" way. Overall though the beer is well kept & the the majority of the staff are polite especially the manageress who is hard working & friendly. The pub itself has a slightly cramped feel when its busy because of the low ceiling & the somewhat narrow design.
|
Stayed here on way back from Manchester Winter Ales Festival. The hand pump selection was pretty dull although not quite as bad as the last comment(although the shropshire lad was a bit cloudy),the rooms were comfortable and the service pretty friendly, not the most exciting JDW interior though 7/10

Called in last night and asked for a pint of Bath Barnstormer which was on the bar in front of me. It's off she said. "OK I'll have a pint of the Shropshire Lad then please". That's off, she said. I said "Why aren't the pumpclips turned round then" she just shrugged. "Have you got any guest ales on then?" Oh yes she said Pedigree and Abbot. Goodbye I said. What a poor attitude. Down goes my rating of this place yet again (and it wasn't that higjh anyway). Not much further before rock bottom guys. Get it sorted.
|
A decent enough Wetherspoons really, but it suffers from the usual Wetherspoons problem of not enough bar staff. I've called in 4 times recently and left twice due to lack of service. When I have managed to get served the beer has been pretty good. The service issue is a problem across most Wetherspoons. Give the managers the budget to employ extra staff at their discretion Tim and you'll sell more beer !
|
Vile experience even by JDW standards. er was almost undrinkable (Everards Hazy Daze) and when the waitress brought the sandwiches out on a plate so hot she needed I napkin I knew it was going to be bad.
Shrewsbury has many places worth a visit...this isn't one of them!
JDW is for people who can't be 4rsed to look elsewhere!!
|
Enjoyed a couple of real ales with my food at a recent visit. Agree on the garden. It is still a typical Wetherspoons though.
|
There is actually a FANTASTIC beer garden at this pub! Just go through the dining area and there is a courtyard beer garden. Nice and quiet.
The beer is good, as is the food. The vast majority of the staff are fantastic, though ONE person lets the side down. Spends all the time she is on shift whining and moaning about the company, her colleagues, the customers, etc. She depressed the other staff when I was there. The next day? The same staff were smiling and jovial. It only takes one nad apple...
|
It's a Wetherspoons. Cheap beer which is usually OK. And long queues: because there aren't enough staff, not because the ones they have don't work hard or keep smiling. The "beer garden" is the car park next to the main road.
|
Great staff, good food, great range of beer and good accomodation.
|
Had a meal in here, quite a large place with a seperate eating area, lovely view of the river, helpful manager she came across and looked after a old couple of regulars. Situated at the bottom of "The Mardol",and near the "Welsh Bridge",I was slightly amazed outside (nothing to do with the pub a signpost pointing to the river ,as though you needed a signpost.
|
Well-known in town for being cheap. Beer is good though some days there's a better selection than others. Only problem is it always seems woefully understaffed.
|
Its a good pub, being the Whetherspoons chain, the prices are really cheap. Good range of pub food. Also does accomodation, highly recommended
