Final pub of the night and this one exceeded my expectations. Whilst there are only 3 ales on, they are ones that you don't find regularly elsewhere - Loddon Hoppit, Upham Punter & West Berkshire Good Old Boy. The latter was being changed during my visit. So I opted for the Punter, which was very nice. The barman was certainly friendly and very knowledgeable about the ales. Samples were offered. The bar is L-shaped and there is a pool table and a TV showing live sports at one end. Worth crossing the bridge for.

I give to you 8 the rating
The beer Doombar was very nice and no see in London so much one by the Sharp.
The lady was very nice and she was friendly
I come meet with 17 friend and no problem anything . Lady even bring our next drinks after finish to a table
Lot of old mens sit to the bar and tell amusing story

Basic locals pub which would more attractive in the Summer; a bit souless in the dull Winter weather. 3 ales of which I tried the Youngs - drinkable but with a very slight hint of astringency. Would come here again though & see how the ales are coming along.

Rough and ready pub, as its name indicates it's close to the Caversham Bridge. Great jukebox and a landlord that cares about his beers, 3 real ales on, Otter Bitter, Doombar and Youngs bitter
|
Brightly painted inside. They do a good pint here and I hope the bar billiards takes off. Nice atmosphere.
|
After a short period of closure The Crown is open again and offers 2 cask beers - Brakspears Bitter and the ubiquitous Doom Bar (there are other beers in Britain apart from this one folks!!!) Still it's good to see the pub open again.
|
Found this pub recently and have had some great evenings. Proper proper pub, great atmosphere, well kept beer, real mix of people and everyone friendly. All ages from youngsters to war veterans. Easily the best pub in Caversham and definitely worth a visit.
|
Totally fab place. Without a doubt the place to be during festival. Staff were superb and place was spick and span every morning. Real good atmosphere and great food. Would definately recommend a visit.

This is a great pub!
I had my first UK beer (Ringwood Best) in this pub. I walked in during the Spain/Germany soccer game and the atmosphere was what I thought an British pub should be. Great staff. Ask for Kenny!
I'll be spending more time in the UK and plan to make The Crown my home bar away from home.
|
Beer on offer is Pride, Brakespears and Ringwood Best. reasonably priced for the area. Staff are generally excellent. Like cibis, I've experienced a lack of beer on 2 occasions since the new landlord arrived.
New landlord is certainly changing things around a bit, opening out parts of the pub, new counters near the windows etc. Bar Billiarrds has replaced the pool table and it and all the games machines and the juke box have been collected together in an area at the front.
Can't say that I have noticed a move towards older clientele.
Well worth a visit.

I'm a newcomer to the area, I've been in this pub a fair few times recently, the staff are very friendly and polite, very knowledgeable about their trade, I find the place very comfortable, customers very friendly as well, which from my experience is somewhat unusual when you first start drinking in a new place.
It can get very busy at weekends, but with none of the overly boisterous or threatening behaviour that you see at some pubs at times like this.
The beer is excellent, London Pride really stands out, if you like your ales this is a great place to visit!

New landlord in place, has transformed the pub - looks very spartan and bare now. Addition of Bar Billiards is a great move, but i've been in 3 times now since the change and all 3 times several beers have been out of stock. It seems to be geared to a much older clientele now, which is fair enough if that's what the owners want, but it actually seems unwelcoming for anyone under 40 :(

Decent enough beer range - Young's, Brakspears, London Pride - well-kept and pleasantly served by the landlord, but, Christ, was it ever LOUD at 8pm on a Saturday night. Sport on flatscreens, but I think they were muted as you couldn't hear a bloody thing over the cacophony of groups of lads and lasses clearly limbering up for the assault on the town centre later on. Not the place for a quiet contemplative pint and a philosophical chat...
|
Don't know how recently they have changed it, but this pub is lovely. No football stuff on the walls, just pictures of regulars (i guess) enjoying themselves - very welcoming and the staff are all very nice!
Also the last few times I have been in they have had a very nice looking tall dark-haired barman in there! I like! :)

Frederick William West was the publican / owner here in 1900. Great grannie's brother. Please remove all footbal paraphernalia and we'll give it a visit!
|
Smart pub with a pleasant beer garden hidden at the back. The only Chelsea top I saw in there was being worn at the time - and by a gentleman who did bear a passing resemblance to Neil Diamond. Decent pool table.
|
Indeed the Chelsea shirt has gone, and on the uppers even more, they now serve Brakespears Bitter on draft...get in!
|
Independent scouts have now confirmed that the aforementioned filthy blue tea-towel has indeed been removed! You may now safely enter this excellent pub without fear of losing your lunch. I'll certainly be frequenting this establishment from now on.
|
liked the place so much i bought it, now has a juke box, i am taking neil diamond off, and working on the staff to make them less sinister. the chelsea shirt has gone to a new home now
|
Whilst this is a quite friendly and relaxed place for a few pints, I know what it is that makes this place feel slightly "wrong". There is a framed Chelsea shirt hanging on a wall which confronts you when you enter the premises. Try not to hurl. I am given to understand that this *thing* was put there by a previous landlord, however the fact that the current landlord doesn't understand how offensive this could be to right-minded people who actually have necks and hair and don't wear Elizabeth Duke jewellery puts me off a bit.
|
hmmmmm, odd - yes i agree - popped in here the other day (admittedly a tue, but ive been in before once it was summer., people were happy, this time it was OK.) it served beer, so cant really complain but its not nice enough to want to go back to unless all other options are too far or i'm too lazy....
|
Neil Diamond, Neil Diamond, what is it with this pub and and Neil? It's an ok bar, perhaps a bit better than the norm for Caversham, somewhat overshadowed by the Griffen which makes it perfect for me as I can get a seat for a quiet beer when i'n on the north bank.
|
I like this pub, it's not fashionable, it doesn't try too hard, the beer is good, it's in the right place. It's a pub, a good one.
I do agree though, the bar staff *are* slightly sinister, friendly but sinister and the pub as a whole *is* subtly wrong. Give it a go.
|
Overall I can only agree with some of the other reviews. I do like it here and have done for a number of years, it's essentially unchanged since I first went there 10 years ago. It is largely a pub full of people who know each other but saying that I have never felt uncomfortable as I am not one of them!! Sinister bar staff yes but friendly enough.
Thinking about it there is an oddness about the place it shouldn't be good but it is and you should feel uncomfortable but you don't. Not very helpful I know but it's still worth a look
|
i'll go with the flow here, it is an odd pub, but not a bad pub, it's difficult to put your finger on the sublte "wrongness" about the place. Perhaps it's the jukebox with the aforementioned Neil Diamond loop, or the slightly sinister bar staff. But the wrongness is quiet addicitive, this pub is miles away from where i live and yet i've been loads of times. The beer is ok, it does food.
|
ood but good as they say.
|
Odd pub, odd in a good way, mind but decidely odd non the less. Beer is ok, music is unusual, setting is good. Well worth a visit.
|
Excellent boozer and still has the neil diamond appreciation society in there masses.
The now have a jukebox which is great value, especially if you like your anthrax, pantera and neil diamond.

great pub go there every august when the festival is on good food and great landlord and lady see you soon from the welsh boyos
|
Used to work there!! Good place to be any day of the week ( sunday nights my favourite ) Top banana staff and even topper banana landlord/lady. I travle from newcastle for the beer and locals!!!
|
Nice pub, but one of the regulars appears to have tourettes!
Saturday night is the best night to go, the landlord buys all the drinks!!
FACT - Not many people are aware this pub is also the home of the Berkshire Chapter of the Neil Diamond Fan Club.
On sunny days, chocolate covered marshmallows decorate the bar area to create a sophisticated ambience, and are free to non diners.
|
Top pub.The staff are good and it is a friendly pub. They defently need to sort the music out though.

Excellent pub, Food is top notch and bar staff really nice and friendly. Cask Ales all well taken care of. Near the centre of town but gives off a very personal, welcoming feel. I agree, however, with the choice of Music. Cutting edge, it aint. But it does have novelty kitsch value !

Great pub, frendly staff, good beer, pool table, somewhat dodgy (no jukebox) music, but hey - you can't have it all!!
