Very nice country pub with beer garden and a separate restaurant area. There were five or six guest ales on, including a Rednik stout which was excellent. Food was also very good, hearty portions and features pub classics with a varied specials board.

A gem of a pub in most ways; lovely whiteboarded multi-roomed building, unpretentious food menu, easily accesible in attractive countryside. The beer range, much on gravity, also looked good, but a clearly sour pint was very reluctantly changed and the replacement was not much better. This is why I so rarely take a duff pint back nowadays, even at £3.60.

Sunday lunches are superb; although not especially cheap but very good quality; and a good choice of well-kept beers too. Recommended....

Excellent pub! Well kept beer (Abbots) and very tasty and good quality bar food. Also, the staff were friendly; and helpfull when my motorbike broke down(!). Nice location too....my first visit but I'll definitely be back soon.

I call this my Local although its 3 miles away and I have Pubs closer, Great homely pub., always a good selection of Guest Beers from all over the country from the Barrel to try before you buy. Food is always excellent whether you are bar snacking or seating in the restaurant section. The old part of the Pub is the original Coaching Inn dating back to the 17th Century (I think) with the original low beams so if you are tall like me mind your head.

One of the first real country pubs (in that it is in the middle of nowhere) as you leave Greater London on the A127. Nice welcoming atmosphere with a long bar with low tables for drinkers and a spacious area to the left for diners. Food can be very good even exceptional, but there is also some variabilty, though when I complained they treated me very well. As a pub the atmosphere is one that makes you want to linger, there is a nice choice of real ales and pretty good value wines if that is your thing. Overall the best country pub for both food and beer drinking i have found in the Brentwood area. You can take your mother or your mates.

proper pub, 8 well kept real ales, including their own. good bar food(bit expensive) no tv, no loud music, nice friendly staff, no need to book for bar food, pint of prawns looked good.

Would love to eat here but you need to book first - according to their website - but you cannot book unless you have a phone without a withheld number and they do not respond to emails.... maybe one day I can get to try their food!!

I echo eveything that everyone else has said. Total ale heaven and awesome food to boot.
One word of warning - shuts at 9pm on Sundays

This is a truly excellent pub. It's the only one I've seen for many years that routinely has proper beer on gravity. The food in the restaurant is wonderful, the bar sandwiches are huge doorsteps on real bread, and when we went in late one Sunday the barmaid was very apologetic that the kitchen was closed but unselfishly directed us to another pub while she poured the beer.
The only real problem with the Old Dog is that unless you live in Herongate you more or less have to go by car which rather limits you.

Helpful and polite staff with prompt service, there was a good range of ales and interesting bar menu (range of sandwiches, pie of the day, pint of prawns, etc) along with an overwhelming specials board, and a range of tables to suit different sized groups. It had an old, traditional and welcoming feel to it, prices were reasonable, and other customers seemed respectable. The only negative points are that there wasn't a massive amount of seating due to the long thin nature of the bar, and it was every so slightly cold (although it was December, and there was a lit log fire down one end). Definitely recommended, especially if there is a designated driver in the group in order to allow the others to take full advantage of the ales on offer.

This is indeed a fine pub with a varying selection of well kept ales on stillage and hand pump. I have also eaten here on the occasion of my mothers 90th birthday and had no complaints about the food. The restaurant was easily accessable by my mother who can walk too well now. Highly recommended.

I can only agree with the other contributors. The Old Dog is one of a dying breed: a populer, traditional, well run country pub. The choice of beers is superb. I have not eaten there but the menu looks interesting, and serious drinkers do not feel like they are being pushed out by 'foodies'.

It took me a while to stumble across this place on my travels, very glad I did.Good beer, attractive interior, worth seeking out

Well kept real ales straight from the barrel ;had a few pints of Royal Clarence Pitchfork which was excellent.Restaurant offers home cooking with large portions.Pub has a friendly atmosphere and welcomes drinkers as well as those dining. Will be back when next in area.

A wonderful little place. Service is good and very friendly, but there's not a lot of seating inside the bar area. Good selection of ales and ciders always avaliable, which changes fairly reguarly. I've only had the bar food, but that was pleasant enough, and very reasonably priced.

Food & beer were excellent, but got the impression it was a restaurant first & a pub second.

We went there last Sunday for a family meal. Food was high quality if a little expensive. Our youngest (fussy!) daughter did not like anything on the menu and the offered to do her sausage and mash. Service was very good and friendly Beer excellent - they had a good selection of real ales, and I opted for the Abbot!! Will be going there again!

food has gone down hill of late , portions getting smaller , but good beer and staff

Nice little pub, great beer, I used to date one of the cooks.

I'm tempted to suggest that the pub takes it's name from a certain member of the staff there. I'll not do so though as this would be rude and completely untrue. The place is so good that I'd be a fool to run the risk of getting barred ! Seriously, a marvellous pub and well worth a visit.

This pub rocks! Wicked food on Sundays (book ahead!) and fantastic atmosphere, very olde worlde!!
