user reviews of the Rose and Crown, Woodford Green

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Pretty busy but soon served. Nice Greene King IPA and even better Abbot. Friendly atmosphere with mix of locals and visitors from other pubs. Food looked good

I visited this pub recently... last week before reading this site. I decided to have a look online subsequent to my visit and well... the last review...really did not cut it for me... so I posted my own. It remains only my view but I certainly did not feel the need to describe anything I saw so graphically as the seemingly uninformed user who visited twice in two years and commented on nowhere else ;-) . So I will elaborate and give hopefully a more insightful point of view.

The bar staff I met were polite and helpful, the drink (Abbot Ale) was very good, the food was exactly what I paid for and enjoyable and the venue was.... a modern version of a traditional pub, in fact I quite liked it. It was brighter than I may like a pub to be but it was clean, the toilets (contrary to the previous statement) were VERY nice, clean and without the ubiquitous pub pong! There was a reasonable selection of ales, I would have liked a few more from outside the Greene King Estate but the Ale I had (Twice if I am honest) was most palatable. Unlike the previous, I did not make it to the garden and stayed in the lower bar area, it had comfortable seats and conversation with the locals was nice and I liked it enough to come back and see them again if I was in the area... unfortunately I rarely am and so am unlikely to visit this friendly and appealing pub in the future. One thing though, the newspapers on the lower bar were yesterday's news - keep on the special touches chaps, I like them but they need to be consistent!

So i posted a comment a couple of years back the last time a visited the Rose & Crown. Well i went back a few weeks ago and I;m sorry to say, its got even worse.

How you can fit any more scum into a small pub is a mystery. This wasn't a Saturday night, but Tuesday day-time. There must have been over 10 completely wasted people being served while clearly unable to stand or speak. The tall dirty barman is still there, taking the money from their pockets to pay for the beer as they were unable to function correctly to hand over the cash...surely this is illegal to serve someone this drunk??

We headed through the pub to the beer garden as it was a nice day. As we'd seen the new menu, we thought we'd give it a try. Still a massive let down, frozen food that's bland and put together with very little care.

The Guinness was stale, no other way around it. Clearly it hasn't been well looked after. I thought that maybe the first pint of the day pulled, but i noticed others drinking it before mine was poured.

The toilets are still the most vile creation, resembling something born from the defecation of the anti-Christ.

Oh and the way the regulars smoke in the front door as people walk in is disgusting.

Safe to say that we'll never be coming back here.

Nice and friendly pub with lots of people. Nice beer. Few weirdos plotted around like most pubs in this area.

Very busy Saturday nights. Have not tried the food but looks like Brakes Brothers specials.

Apart from some of the regulars from the Travelers in here, the place was full of young suspicious looking characters. The Guinness was quite good and although I did not try any, they have a fairly decent menu and the food that I saw emerge from the kitchen looked very decent. Will keep an eye on this place.

Sadly now seems to be mainly frequented by cokeheads and morons.
paddyr - 17 Aug 2013 00:36
Bad, like, seriously bad.

Walked in there a few weeks ago with my parents. Waited 20 minutes at the bar. Fair enough if it was a busy Friday/Saturday night. But it was a Tuesday afternoon!! The bar staff are complete morons. Absolutely no sense of urgency and desire to serve customers or make any money!

I moved to the area a few months back and have been looking for a good place to call my local - sadly, this place will not be it.

This isn't a one off case either it seems. I've spoken to neighbours and friends nearby, all who have the same thing to say "used to be a great little village pub a few years back, but too much commercial, frozen food and generic offers!"

Shame, if I had the money I'd buy the pub and make a fortune!
timo_77 - 30 Oct 2012 15:23
Used to be a good little boozer. However its recently had a chavvy refit and subsequently resembles a Weatherspoons!! It should be a cosy, village pub. The locals used to be fun and polite, though now seems there are more crack heads and alcoholic's there than anywhere I know!

The staff behind the bar used to be fun, polite and reasonably efficient in serving you a beer - The Rose has never been quick at serving beer, one pint at time, but was delivered with a smile! - but now they are disgusting and miserable. They ALL need a good wash, a hair cut and some customer service training. Its a bloody disgrace. It will now take you an average of 15-20 mins to get served on an average night.

The toilets are still small, cramped and smelly. Food still bad, hasn't got any better since a change of chef, the beer is bad, really bad. Guinness tastes old and stale, the ale is now non existent and the wine list is weak. Asda have a better value range than this place!! Also the removal of Sky Sports/ESPN means a long walk to the next nearest pub.

The new landlord seemed ok to start with, but turns out he is a real wet fish. There appears to be a number of old troublemakers who were previously barred, but with the new landlord they have obviously been allowed back in. I'm told a number of fights and scuffles have happened right in front of the new Landlord, yet he does nothing and ignores it.

All in all, avoid this place at all costs. It sucks. Head to the Travellers or our new local, The Cricketers which we moved next door too just a week ago.

Looks like it has been done up a bit but not my sort of place sadly. Beer was awful to drink and could just about manage a pint. Having moved back to the area after many years most of the pubs have gone down hill.
Danny1955 - 6 Sep 2011 13:39
emergency use by the local ne'er do wells who cannot get hold of white powder elsewhere, I imagine.
paddyr - 14 Mar 2011 02:51
Odd little place around a back street that is for emergency use only.
Gaybarhogger - 7 Mar 2011 10:14
Good Boozer. Worth the visit.
duracellrabbit - 15 Dec 2010 22:14
Well, I have to say, that since the much needed refurbishment over the summer, this place is much more easier on the eye - I think the Guv'nor is very welcoming, and the locals are happy to let you talk with them (as long as you know what you are talking about)

It's a nice local, it's main drawbacks are the ill though out massive round table, and the music choices, and the sofas are too low (I had fun trying to get my mum out of one of those a couple of months back) - however, there are plenty of screens to watch the sports on, it's well staffed to serving times are not unreasonable when it's busy, and plenty of beer! :o)
MsWiley - 16 Dec 2009 00:43
My favourite pub in Woodford, The Guv'nor Paddy makes you very welcome, great pub to watch rugby or to just chill.

Thank you Paddy

If you are a forty-something male, who prefers the company of twenty five year old women, with questionable interests in heavy drinking, rather than your wife and children then this pub is just the trick.

Went in here for the first time a year ago and was impressed by its atmosphere. However, after a visit last month I was less endeared.

It appears that the regulars are using the pub as an outpost; a den of Essexness, rough females berating unseen 'friends' to other friends - bleating and lager.

The last entries author must be a tramp or down and out if he thinks that this place is even worth using for the the loo! How can he suggest that this pub is better than the Travellers Friend or The Cricketers that are just a stone throw away? This pub is a spent force and inhabited with low life who have been barred from all the other decent places. Even the harvester at The Castle is better!

You must have been to some grotty places if you give this 8 out of 10 mate. It is probably the most depressing uninviting place in the area! You must be barred from the pubs i've mentioned above?

Best pub in the local area, although the competition is not fierce.

Almost split into two distinct pubs with the lower and upper bar, having somewhat separate clientelle. The lower bar generally has more intelligent discussion, whilst the upper bar is usually noisier with more drunken patrons.

Poor features include the removal of the previously popular jukebox. Punters now have to suffer the forced brewery music.

There is also a ridiculous restriction from sitting on bar stools at the bar, even when there is hardly anyone in the pub, on say a Sunday evening.

The beer garden could also be revitalised by replacing the shrivelled dead brown plants with fresh ones and then employing a gardener to water them.

The furniture and machines have also been misarranged, with a quiz machine placed in a narrow aisle opposite the upper bar, causing frequent congestion on busy evenings.

The decor is also somewhat shabby, with too many random posters hanging from walls interspersed with out of date black and white pictures.

Despite these and many other flaws, the pub remains a vibrant part of the local community. This probably stems from its fair size enabling it to retain a quite sizeable base of regulars.

Most punters are from the local surroundings and a certain affluence can be detected amongst some. Nonetheless a few scruffs and tramps manage to ensure the pub retains a "down to earth" feel to it.

Attractions to the pub now include a varied food menu being served until 9pm most evenings (as soon as the required staff can be found or trained).

There is also a Monday night poker game, Tuesday night quiz and there has even occassionally been a Karaoke evening.

High profile sports games, including football, rugby and golf are regularly shown on the many flat screens inside the pub, and sometimes extended to an outdoor screen in the garden.

The bar staff are usually very accomodating and the beer is usually maintained at a high standard.

So, whilst I may have my gripes, nowhere is perfect and I feel the Rose and Crown deserves my rating of 8 out of 10 for probably being the best local (and traditional) pub in Woodford village.

You certainly get a wide range of people in here. Mainly unsavory though. On the night I went were two of the biggest blokes ive seen drinking pints with a gang of 6 others. They were scarey creatures and tried not to make eye contact. They seemed friendly enough and kept themselves apart from everyone else. Then there were a few vagrant types mixed in with smartly dressed East Enders blokes with Mutton Ladies dressed as Lambs. I think the customers look after the place. The staff didnt look worried except just miserable like a lot of staff these days. Beer was not anything shout about. Overall found it uninspiring.

lots of old boys up the ramp.
don't go there if you want to meet any ladies.
as mentioned below it's more of an old skool pub.
the lower bar still has only a gents toilet.lol.
fine for a local slurp away from those noisy youngsters and their pop music.
slurper01 - 20 Sep 2007 16:51
great pub, nice beer garden, nicely hidden out the way. come on steve, shout 'em in!
DavidWaspnest - 13 Jul 2007 17:16
Very average local pub, set in a backstreet off the main road.
Greshon - 16 Feb 2007 09:48
Standard 'mans' pub. Decent beer, lots of blokes talking loudly and getting drunk slowly. Good place in the summer. Not over-exciting for the ladies I'd guess.
tubthumper66 - 23 Sep 2006 10:44
Awful Pub, the worst kept beer, alarmingly awful punters, drab decor, I don't see what all the fuss is about, why'd anyone want to drink here is beyond me.*

*very poor attempt at keeping the general pratty essex hordes out of what is a proper pub, if you like a proper boozer with no aggro, no posers, this is the one for you
raybentos - 16 Jan 2006 16:51
Quality! A proper East End boozer somehow displaced to the London/Essex border. Bar staff good, Guinness superb, locals friendly and full of banter. Beer garden large and beautiful in summer. Has darkened corners and big heavy tables. We need more pubs like this round here.
patrickjsm - 29 Dec 2005 18:49
A great pub with an average price. Not far from where I live and accross the street from my local hairdressers. Great jukebox. Me and my mate were getting drunk on tequillars whilst listen to many top tunes. The only problem is that there is too many old men.
bradster2004 - 21 Dec 2004 17:18
A nice frendly atmosphere. Looks like a old mans pub, but is completely different. Staff very friendly, as are the locals.
Offers a superb sunday lunch.
Wonderful beer garden for summer. Has 3 tv and 2 large screens to show all types of sporting events. Quiz nights on tuesdays
