Excellent! We came here because we'd have had to queue next door (Cosy Club) to be shown to a table. This was a lovely traditional pub with a selection of Badger beers and an excellent food menu. The food took a while, because it was freshly cooked to order, but was well worth the wait.

Salisbury is a medieval cathedral city in the southern English county of Wiltshire. It’s 9 miles south of the iconic prehistoric stone circle at Stonehenge, which stands on the grassland of Salisbury Plain. The city’s ornate 13th-century cathedral has a 123m spire, a working 14th-century clock and an original copy of the Magna Carta. And quite a few pubs.

Haven't visited , but judging by what I have seen and heard , sounds a very nice establishment. I will have to make the effort to visit this beautiful city and have a few jars before taking in the Cathedral.

As Odbod said, better than the Cloisters which had we also just visited. Worth visiting for the garden alone if it's sunny but there are also numerous cosy, beamed seating areas and a couple of bars. Busier than most of the other pubs we visited with a range of ages but service was still instant. At just £3.30, my pint of Badger First Call was pretty good, Bouncing Bounder and Tanglefoot (£3.90) were also on sale.

A lot to this pub, rooms here & there & a fantastic garden with views to the cathedral. Service was efficient & cheerful & there was a pleasant vibe amongst the fairly large group of customers. May have been the sunshine, a rare thing on my journey. My pint of Hall & Woodhouse Tanglefoot (3.70) was quite good & my overall impression was positive.

Recent re-visit as part of a stag crawl and worth every minute. Everyone enjoyed the attractive barmaids, excellent condition of the ale and the general happy atmosphere in the beer garden. It made for a better venue than the Cloisters that preceeded it. Incidentaly the Wig and Quill was dead as a door nail so we passed on by.
odbod - 14 Oct 2014 13:40
Made with real badger beer. Wasnt that on the side of can of Shandy?

Came in on a Saturday night. Full of leary rugby watcher having farting competitions and talking about what they would do to girls. If only they weren't fat and fatulent.

Mrs Mappiman was not impressed.
Mappiman - 21 Mar 2014 11:35
Visited a couple of times for a recent weekend - cosy warm interior with a large wood burning stove knocking out many a BTU! Beer range was good with a nice range of everything and the menu looked nice if a little pricey - we gave it a miss! However, the bar staff we encountered were awful - you know when you get the feeling that you are just being a dammed inconvenience to them as they go about there mysterious ways, it was worse that that. Also on our second visit (I always try to give a place a second chance), we got stuck by a small group of highly obnoxious drunk loud mouthed rugger buggers - we would have moved if we could but all other seats where in use. It is a nice place and maybe we were unlucky twice, but good service is so important in a competative market but as the place was very busy I guess the can get away with it - for now!

With the demise of The Chough, this is quite likely the best of the town centre places in Salisbury, with one exception: it is a Hall & Woodhouse pub. It is atmospheric and very friendly and the food is pretty good, but H&W beer is always going to be a limitation (unless you happen to like it, which I do not). 7/10
HenPen - 3 Nov 2013 16:47
Every time we visit its is busy, the ale is excellent and a recent foray into the menu resulted in good quality food too. Barmaids make me feel old though! Heartily recommend this pub for drinking or eating.
odbod - 31 Oct 2013 15:12
Popped in for sunday lunch with my family, the pub was packed and no tables left. We asked at the bar for a table of six, the landlady went out of her way to seat us and made us very welcome.
My father tried the Hopping Hare and loved it. The sunday roast was cooked to perfection.
We recommend this pub for the food, beer and service. We will be visiting again shortly.

Atmospheric old pub in centre of town. Have been three times in the last year when visiting friends and beer has been consistently good. Have some excellent Badger when last there at Jubilee weekend.

Staff young and generally friendly and helpful, but my opinion marred by by slightly distressing incident on last visit when woman who appeared to be the landlady/owner was giving young duty manager grief over non appearance of other staff. Sure, it's an important issue to resolve, but not loudly over the bar when people (i.e me and my partner) are waiting to be served. The young DM was clearly embarassed when Madam finally stalked off.

We found 3 new pubs (one a day) in Salibury over the long weekend and now have a range of other places to go to on our next visit and maybe we will at that. This landlady really needs to think about the impression she's creating to the public.

I would give it 7 but marked down on her behaviour alone.
Southerngirl - 22 Jun 2012 11:19
Lovely beer garden with cathedral views...
Average beer from Hall & Woodhouse..
The "Landlady" would be better suited to running a prison, and is totally lacking in social skills.

Stayed for 2 nights for salisbury Live festival in charming character room- spotless. Cant understand last couple of reviews at all. Food , staff, all first class - a new ale on tap ,Fox, getting rave reviews from locals and me too ! VISIT AT ALL COSTS !!!!
beerchecker1 - 22 May 2011 10:46
We visited last friday evening and the service was absolutely dreadful. Staff were unhelpful, rude and had an attitude that you were wasting their time; especially one woman who might have been the manager. I waited for fifteen minutes at the bar on a fairly quiet evening and then had to queue to place my food order. After a long 30 minute wait the food was cold, tasteless and something I could have bought better from a supermarket. Speaking to my friends, they have all had similar treatment there. Totally overpriced and disappointing - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Chris38 - 15 May 2011 13:28
Looked lovely from the outside - shame everything else didn't live up to it.

After ordering drinks and food at the bar at about 1.15pm on a far-from-busy Tuesday, and making three trips to the table (no tray offered) - waited almost an hour for 3 steaks and a burger - which only turned up after I asked after 45 minutes for an ETA - food still took almost 15 more minutes to get to our table. I could cooked our order MYSELF in 15 minutes!

Mediocre food, served poorly. Steaks were cold on cold plates, chips boiling hot. The only person in our party to get a boiling hot plate was my daughter (age 5!!).

Staff lacked interest, enthusiasm and experience - I didn't see anyone over the age of about 20. The passage to the toilets seemed to double as a bicycle park and builders dumping ground.

Classy.

Eating here left us barely enough time to get round the Cathedral and we missed out on Old Sarum altogether.

Hugely disappointing. Avoid if at all possible.

Called her for lunch on April 8th. Pub has a lovely beer garden (the weather was superb) and a good selection of 3 ales, and it allows dogs in the garden (you have to walk through the pub). The food was expensive but satisfactory (no more). We found the staff in the pub ok, but the woman serving the garden area had a real 'attitude' on her. We wouldn't return to this pub because of her. Shame as the pub itself is lovely.
GaryR - 13 Apr 2011 15:56
nice beer garden !!! shit food, beer ok, but sad unhappy staff .. very unproffessional. would only recomend to a dog but please dont feed him off the menu if you like your dog that is
vicar323 - 24 Jan 2011 22:43
Nice cosy pub, good beer and friendly staff.
N.Barber2 - 18 Dec 2010 22:11
The last poster was a 'Lucinda Woodhouse'.......mmmmmmm, let me think, Hall & Woodhouse pub, great service all afternoon.............makes you think!!!! I've actually got nothing against this pub. The last licensee, Colin, was a great fella. The new 'owners' are ex-Cloisters. Is Colin still secretly involved?? Rumours say this may be true!!! Anyway, the place is usually worth a visit. One of the better pubs in Salisbury.
wolvesfan - 10 Sep 2010 19:59
I visited this pub at the weekend with a party of 15 and it was brilliant. The staff helped move some tables together to accommodate us in its beautifully kept garden. The food was very tasty, well presented and really good value. The service was also faultless with the staff keeping us in jugs of Pimms all afternoon! I would certainly recommend this pub for a visit.
LucindaWoodhouse - 12 Apr 2010 17:58
I guess it's a Hall & Woodhouse pub by the range of badger ales but that's no bad thing seeing as my pint of "lemony Cricket" was beautiful. The pub itself is great aswell and has an amazing beer garden to boot, definately a 9/10 on the day i visited last month.
fat_beer_badger - 21 Sep 2009 11:38
Nice pub very nice beer garden food is great , Shame about it having badger beer any other and it would be a fantastic pub
WillyTheBeer - 23 Aug 2009 10:18
This wasnt going to be part of our scheduled crawl given the relatively low rating but the place looks so enticing as you walk past that it is difficult not to pop in and luckily, despite this being pub number 11 on a 13 pub crawl, I was still of sufficient mind to appreciate its wonderful olde worlde medieval charm. The front bar is fairly small and doesnt really give an indication as to the size of the rambling interior that appears to be an amalgam of 2 or 3 original cottages.. Several original wonky walls can be found down the centre of the pub and there are enough low beams and exposed brickwork to satisfy all medieval building enthusiasts. One room is set aside for dining whilst another is more of a loungey area although nothing looks too out of place among its surroundings. At the rear is the attractive and spacious garden has fine views of the Cathdral spire (unfortunately the rest is currently under a mountain of scaffolding) and is ideal for a sunny day. For a Saturday evening the place wasnt too busy and service was fine. I noted 3 Badger beers Best, Tanglefoot and the hitherto untried by me Lemony Cricket which was most enjoyable. It is mentioned in other Salisbury pub reviews that the New Inn is expensive but interestingly none of the previous comments on the pubs page have stated this and, despite things being a bit hazy on the memory front, I dont recall it being anything that seriously shocked the wallet. All in all, I would definitely make this a regular stop for a Salisbury visit despite whatever misgivings others have found to give it a low rating.
RogerB - 14 Aug 2009 12:43
Fantastic new management, great new chefs, beautiful garden with a warm, comfortable atmosphere. Those of you that have rated the Wig and Quill above this pub, have you actually been there? It's consistently empty, dank and lifeless
zanna123 - 20 May 2009 21:22
We spent our UK holiday back in Salisbury, as we really enjoyed it two years ago. We stopped in here this trip as we missed it last time. The food was decent during our visit and the ales were okay. Badger was on offer and it's not a favorite of mine. That said, it was pleasant enough for a quick stop and staff were friendly and provided good service.
fr21555 - 16 Feb 2009 20:07
Why would anyone want to drink in here now that all the other pubs are non-smoking? Its beers are overpriced, the food is average, the service is indifferent and there's no hint of welcome as you enter - it seems non-regular customers are a bit of an inconvenience to the staff.

Unless you really are interested in looking at the Cathedral from the garden, or you just want to appreciate the lovely medieval building, it's well worth walking the extra 200 yards to the Wig and Quill or Old Ale house, depending which way you're going.

Nice beer and good building. Very busy on the Saturday in June 2008 that I visited it with my father-in-law while the girls went shopping. I liked it. The beer was nice. The father-in-law did not. He thought it was more restauranty than pubby. And he was right. Unfortunately, our next stop was the Old Ale House...
generalstaal - 23 Jun 2008 06:31
A couple of pints of Tanglefoot did not go down badly at all. Pleasant, comfortable relaxed atmosphere at lunchtime on my only visit - I liked the place.
earlydrinker - 6 Apr 2008 22:24
A bit twee but I would not let that put you off. Being a stranger I did not realise I was in such peril from the awful badger but the one I had did not taste as rough as its posterior. A good place to fall into for one before carrying on the the Wig and Quill
Apostar - 29 Jun 2007 13:37
Had lunch here on Monday. Staff were welcoming and efficient. The pub has many different rooms - mostly non-smoking, and an enormous attractive garden with views of the cathedral.

I don't mind Badger beers and the pint I had tasted fine. The food was generally good except for the awful frozen chips - why not cut up real potatoes? The dishes were a little pricey we thought, but not too much to put us off.
GrahamA - 1 May 2007 12:36
nice pub shame it sells Badger beer or it would be a great pub
WillyTheBeer - 31 Dec 2006 10:08
Jolly sort of place with a diverse range of customers who appear to interact well together.
Place could be renamed the "Tardis", as it seems to go on forever.
Had a very good pint of Guinness which was well served and a brave attempt made to draw a shamrock in the head. Not at all bad as the barmaid was from Poland.
Worth a call.
almost_an_old_git - 28 Oct 2006 15:53
A reasonable pint of Badger Best which isn't something that you'll hear me say too often, not being the greatest fan of Hall and Woodhouse ales. Tidy little pub with amiable and efficient staff.
johnkn7 - 9 Oct 2006 13:30
We were recommended this Pub to eat in. fod was excellent with a plentiful selection, if a little pricey. That said, the Beer from Badger was very well kept. we went on monday, and couldn't understand why there was no-one else in there...until we heard the music (dodgy NWMOHM group Saxon) Well no-one's perfect!! best Pub food in Salisbury
ahscum - 26 Jan 2006 21:34
I returned to this pub recently having not been there for about three years. It used to be an entirely non-smoking pub (I'm not anti-smoking but you wouldn't believe how much smoke in the air affects the taste of a good pint) so it was an immediate disappointment to see a guy smoking a stinky pipe. Why abolish that policy? Money talks I guess... Anyway, the quality of the beer soon got me over the disappointment - a perfect pint of Tanglefoot as always. The food is very good if a little expensive and to be fair to the owners, it can be eaten in the non-smoking restaurant. A very good pub still, well worth a visit.
Get_me_some_Old_Tom - 6 Oct 2005 13:40
We visited Salisbury (Downton, to be exact) from our home in Toronto, in September 2004. We made this pub our local while there. We can't say too much about this place. Marvellous service, food, decor, cleanliness and (Hall & Woodhouse) beer. If I ran a pub, I would model it on this place. We were made to feel welcome, like regulars the moment we set foot in The New Inn. Next time we visit, we're going to try the accommodations, too.
Fabulous place. Just don't tell too many people or it'll get overrun...
John & Jerri Grimley - [email protected] - 26 Oct 2004 15:59
We went to Salisbury on short notice and found there were no rooms available in most of the B&B's. We popped into The New Inn to ask if they knew of any other places we could try and found out they had rooms available! What a lovely surprise it was to be able to stay in such a comfortable and welcoming place. Additionally, the Inn has lots of character and is walking distance to the Cathedral! We feel very lucky to have stumbled upon The New Inn and to have met Karen. She is a delightful host and the breakfast was one of the best we have ever had!
Mrs. Margit Selvey - 1 Aug 2004 11:38
visited and stayed at New Inn. Great atmosphere. Owners John and Maggie are the real thing: great hosts who really know the area and tailor sightseeing to the guest. Pub is warm, friendly, attractive, with good food.
Becca Bowen - 23 Jul 2004 08:58
Darn good pub/restaurant serving decent Badger beers. Great view of the cathedral from the garden. Nice bar staff.
