Nice pub, pleasant landlord, good part-covered smoking area. I indulged in Thwaite's 'Wainwright' nicely kept.

Well worth a visit for the cheese alone. Other food is also good value but why bother? Great selection of ales always well kept, the Timothy Taylor is a highlight of any trip into town. Staff always friendly but 'locals' a bit cliquey. Check out the fake Litchfield (sic) memorabilia on the walls for a laugh. Highly recommended (especially if you like cheese!).

I found this pub to have a lovely warm atmosphere especially the new licensee Mark, he seemed to have a great rapport with his staff and customers and my family and I were made to feel very welcome. We had a late lunch which was very well presented and was absolutely delicious homemade fayre and very reasonably priced. The ale was perfect and the regulars added to the overall ambience. Quaint pub, good location, I will definately be visiting again on a regular basis and will be bringing my friends and family

It is open again, though apparently with a temporary licensee if the to let sign on the outside is anything to go by. It's still a nice pub, but the staff seemed a little frosty in comparison to the warm welcome that used to be on offer. Ales on offer were nicely kept, though all were from the Marstons group and there were no guests like before.

Really cute friendly pub. They have a small book exchange and cheese for sale. Beer is on the pricey side though.

Having recently moved to the area I was so pleased to find a place that still has that traditional style with a genuine warm and welcoming atmosphere. It offers a great choice of ales with at least 2 guests on offer . The food is reasonably priced, excellent quality, home made fare. Whether you want a Sunday Lunch or a cheese platter this is the place. The staff are very friendly, knowledgable about their beer and polite its nice to go somewhere where service still matters. A great little pub with locals who dont bite but enjoy a good "crack"!

Great place. I'm not from the area and we just chose it by chance when we were visiting. Next time I'm around though, I'll be heading for here straight away. The ale was ace and the food was proper pub grub at a great price. The landlady seemed very friendly to me.
jarofporter - 18 Feb 2010 11:49
Felt the landlady to be a little frosty on arrival maybe they bain't be keen on outsiders in these parts.
Nice enough pub though, but a limited selection of beers on (mostly the usual ubiquitous landlord, pedigree etc). Plumped for the one unusual one on offer which was the Crouch Vale Amarillo. It was reasonable enough but not the kind of beer to stick with for an evening.

I've been a regular at The Queens for a number of years because of the quality of the beer, the friendliness of the staff and the many other "locals" who use the place. The recently added food services are a bonus, particularly the Tuesday Curry night which taste great and are very good value for money.

The best little pub in Lichfield has just got better and I should know because Ive used it for thirty years. Whilst theres been a recent change of management its been within the family so the previous high standards have been maintained and improvements made. The beer is as good as ever but the pub now stays open on Sunday afternoons, the food is better than ever with an extensive menu of cheap home made food and the introduction of Sunday lunches and a curry night. So if youve not been there before, or for a while, its definitely worth a visit to this unspoilt pub.

I am afraid to say that IHMO this pub is letting things slide. On three separate visits recently the beer quality was average, in one case very poor and the bar was understaffed leading to fairly long waits to get served. In the past the landlord would not have served other than top notch beer and taken off sale anything that did not come up to scratch. The present management seem to be unconcerned that Lichfields premier beershop is going down the pan.

I can't really say much more than what has already been said, but what a pub! Definately 'Pub Of The Year' for me. Great food, Slurpalicous ales, friendly staff and clientele. Not many places where you can go to the toilet and Tony Christie pulls up beside you!

Along with the Geroge & Dragon, one of the best two pubs in Lichfield town centre that i have visited so far.

A 19th centurty, brick facade, wood interior building on the same road that used to house the pre-Union workhouse.

A few real ales, including Timothy Taylor Landlord, Baythams Bitter and Marston's Pedigree. The Bathams was fine

The Queens Head is definitely worth the few minutes walk from Lichfields city centre. It has a good selection of well kept beers and a good value for money lunchtime menu. Admittedly the food service was on the slow side but there is a sign on the bar warning customers that the pub does not serve fast food, but they do serve good home cooked food as fast as they can. It seems that a lot of the regulars phone or text their orders and e.t.a. in advance and so avoid the wait.

From previous reviews it seems that the selection of beers is now not as good as it used to be, but it is still much better choice than is available in most other Marstons pubs that Ive been in. The Oxford Gold was excellent.

Two and half years on from my last review of this pub things have changed on the beer front and not for the better. Marston's products, (Ringwood, Jenning's, Brakspear), are gradually replacing genuine guest ales and although Tim Taylor's Landlord is still permanently on sale the pub has lost some of it's charm for me. Still good but no longer excellent.

Have visited this pub on a number of occassions and found it to be enjoyable. The food selection is very good, especially for vegetarians, and they have a good selection of cheese and pate. However on my last visit in which i atteneded with my father, our partners and cousin the landlady was extremely rude, and got her locals involved to speak to ourselves. We were sitting chatting and found this a complete shock, this was smoothed over by my father after he advised that we were out as my nan had just passed, but no apology was forthcoming from the landlady. I would not visit this outlet again out of principle, but believe that without this misshap this was a good pub.

The best pub in Lichfield by some way. Great ale, and nice good value, home, not gastro, cooking. Plus pate, cheese and bread as nice beer food. Check out their swapshop bookshelf - there's actually stuff worth reading on there. Nice mixed crowd in there too. Only docked a point for not having all that varied a range of beers.
dry_riser_inlet - 25 Feb 2009 13:08
Nice traditional pub a few minutes walk from the town centre. A good selection of beers include two rotating guest beers. Food prices good and specials of cheese and pates from a dedicated fridge at the end of the bar. Beer a little overpriced maybe but a nice pub with pleasant atmosphere.

Found this pub after being recommended. Well worth a visit, its the epitome of the best of pubs ! Old back street pub that has all the charm from not being messed with ! First visit made very welcome by Denise & Roy. Excellent beer with a good choice of guest ales. Great hot food at lunchtime at realistic prices,. Evening, why not have a taste of the extensive cheese & pate menu served with granary bread, goes well with beer or wine !!!

Superb Pub. The beer's are amongst the best kept in the county. Its old, its small - everyone loves it apart from the Kiddies who spend their pocket money on fizzy spit at trend bars such as Joot and Lloyds. Has a range of cheese if you fancy something savoury. Great atmosphere.
londinieres - 27 Sep 2006 14:04
Smoky, not child friendly, a bit tatty - what's not to like - the only proper boozer in Lichfield
dis - 20 Sep 2006 16:37
This old Lichfield pub got a facelift in the eighties and was one of a few that was set up as a Marston's Ale Shrine. They have all disappeared except this beauty. I shall do not want to echo other reviews so I will move on to the beer! Tim Taylor's Landlord, a prince among ales, is a regular as is Adnams Bitter, (a commoner), but there is always a selection of guest beers often including the Lichfield brewery's offerings. (Oh, and Marston's Pedigree should you wish to be reminded of what constitutes a poor product). The pub itself gets very busy and deserves to. Pay it a visit, you won't regret it.
doctorpint - 27 Aug 2006 19:32
A real cracker of a friendly traditional back street pub and generally a teen free zone. Top regular ales include Landlord, Pedigree and Adnams. A couple or three guest ales often include those from Bathams, Burton Bridge, Lichfield and Church End breweries. Try the bread and cheese from the chiller....superb! Can have a heavy smokey atmosphere at times otherwise would score much higher.
Dayskipper - 16 Mar 2006 22:48
excellent pub - good quality and choice of beer, no noise, great pork scratchings, and top cheesy food! Clean and friendly, even toward us visiting Sunderland supporters, to whom this is now a favourite stop on the way to games in the West Midlands

Cracking pub with excellent quality beers. Make the effort of the short walk from the city centre.
Steve - 30 Aug 2004 21:51
worth the walk from the City Centre, loved the cheese selection. Marvellous novel attraction, but no gimmick, Also, lovely pint.
Jimbo Smith - 10 May 2004 21:45
Been using this very friendly pub for many years. Nice to be in an environment where there is no 'Pre Fabricated' background music that you constantly have to talk over. Great selection of ales with an ever chaging variety.
david - 30 Mar 2004 20:45
I've been a regular here for years.Great pint of Tim Taylor's Landlord, and a good selection of guest ales. One of the increasingly rare pubs in Lichfield serving good real ales!
Neil - 2 Feb 2004 20:11
Its my local pub for a start and I live 5 miles away from it so that should tell you that I love this pub. Great real ale served all the time which changes frequently. Don't do food but yes they have a great cheese selection and crusty bread which goes down great with the beer. Good mix of people go in there which is great also because the idiotic kids give the pub a mix because there is no loud music in there. Defenitley worth a pint or five when in lichfield

Fantastic Victorian pub, just outside the City Centre of Lichfield, a small Cathedral City in Staffordshire. The most unique thing about this pub is it's Cheese Counter! You can choose from a large selction of cheeses to go with you beer!
