user reviews of the Bridge, Barnes

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub is nice enough and well set out, but the food is not as good as I was hoping it would be, though I think it's reasonably priced. The service was nice enough, though reading some of the other reviews maybe I was lucky. The pub itself has a fair bit of seating and extends a little at the back beyond the bar, but it seemed a bit lacking in atmosphere to me and not many people were there despite the fact it was in the evening. I'd say it's a better bet to have a short walk over the bridge and head to one of the pubs on the Hammersmith side of the river.

Humm just wondering if i'm talking about the same pub...

We went there on sunday, 5 of us and we had an amazing time, from the welcoming, to the charm of the waitress.. and the food, we were NOT expecting that from a pub.. and we had a friend who joined us and it wasn't even an issu to seat him at the table.

The service was relax, and even a guy who just started, took our dessert order and as we wanted some from a set menu, he wasn't sure if we could get those, but we did and he was honest about it.

May be there is a change but i will be back ASAP to this place without any doubt as we did notice that we had a 4 course meal with a bloody mary for 20 quid.....

You might have had a bad experience, i , no actually all of us, had a FAB time, thanks guys and keep the good work

My friend and I had lunch here yesterday. Not surprisingly it was one of the only pubs in Barnes that had a table free and after dining there I now know why!

We were seated at a table right by the garden doors, which was freezing and really uncomfortable. A waitress who clearly needs a new job as this one must make her very unhappy, came over and took our order. We waited ages for 2 glasses of water and never got out bread. Our roast then came which was cold and the Yorkshires and potatoes were so hard you could cause someone some very serious damage with them. Our wine never came and when we did receive it from another waitress after chasing, the waitress I had chased asked me why I was chasing as it was on its way!!

Dessert was equally lame and not once did the staff smile.

Awful place, awful food and awful service.

Has recently become a bit of a gamble due to dreadful management. Beers frequently off or "off" and the level of service is terrible. And for the love of all that is good in this world, could the management please get shot of that total numpty of a barman: the one with the mullet/slaphead combination who looks like one of the henchmen from the film Die Hard. He has to go. Simply awful.

Just a quick update on my last review - (forgotten sunday lunch) - my partner went back in a couple of days later to complain and they did give us a 50 voucher and the service was much improved for us when we returned.

A group of friends involved in a squash ladder occasionally use the courts at St Paul's school on weekends, and this pub is perfectly placed for a recovery beer and dinner.

A group of six of us poppoed in on Sunday for dinner. I've been here a few times previously and it always seems a pretty nice place. The beer is always OK, and they had Doom Bar on tap at the weekend which is always a nice pint.

We also had a Sunday lunch while we were there - they do a special menu on Sundays - 4 courses for 19-20 (starter, main, pudding and cheese), but having played squash I wasn't really in the mood for a massive feast. I couldn't pass up the roast completely however - I had the beef, and it was very nice. Good quality food for a pub, although the roast on it's own was still 14 or so, which isn't cheap.

I would have to agree with previous reviewers on the quality of service - we were waiting a long time for the food to come, and I can imagine that this would be problematic if you were in a rush (fortunately, we weren't so it didn't really affect our experience badly). The waiting staff did seem quite helpful, although there was a bit of confusion when we tried to pay our food bill at the bar - apparently these are on "two different systems".

One thing to note is that if you are planning on coming for food on a Sunday lunchtime, it's probably worth booking in advance, as it was pretty rammed when we arrived (although we did still manage to get a table eventually).

All in all though, it's not a bad pub, and the food is well worth a look.

Just had a terrible experience in the Bridge. It's a lovely space but the service was appalling. First the manager didn't show us to our table; just waved in the general direction of where he wanted us to sit. After waiting for 45 minutes following ordering my partner asked for an update on when our food was coming. After ten minutes no one had bothered coming to speak to us; so I enquired again. Finally we were told our waitress had forgotten to give our order to the chef. What annoyed us was not that the waitress had forgotten - these things do happen; it was that no one had bothered to communicate with us and we had to chase and chase them. Finally to add insult to injury we were not even offered a complimentary meal or even a complimentary drink! I have rarely encountered such poor service and it's a shame because it is a lovely pub to be inside. Very disappointed.

went to the bridge based on milsonman's reveiw and was very pleased with the selection of ales ( wadworth 6X & doombar on my visit) also noticed there list of other guest ales they offer-refreshing to see. like milsonman it was a nice and busy evening and felt good a place a would return to. the offer of food was too great for me not to be tempted, not disapppointed at all. i had the chilli and ginger calamari ( wow) and was impressed by there menu's on offer. Meat Fish Wine a menu they run claims to show off there favourite food and use of favourite suppliers with most of the fish coming from cornwall. seems to be a menu with that little extra although i didnt take the plunge it looked inviting. they also have good size beer garden which has cover. my friend and i sat out there for a while, pleasant even at this time of year......shall return soon ( cumberland ale sounds like a good tipple)

Popped in for a quick beer and although the huge display of lagers and gassy beers dominate the bars I am pleased to report that two ales were available: Fullers and Naked lady. I had a pint of Pride. Nimhbus will be happy.
The restaurant was very busy despite it being early so they must be getting something right. Equally the bar area was "nice" busy. Perhaps there is a benefit from the closure of the pub opposite but it seemed all OK to me.

I would not call this a beer drinkers pub - as there was nothing on the beer list when I asked about it that was enticing but a relaxing pub eatery. The Sunday roast special was 4 courses and a glass of champagne for 20. The beef roast was perfectly cooked and the vegetables all fresh and tasty. The staff were friendly and could not do enough, even when the lady next to me knocked over a vase which spilt wine all over the 90% finished plate of food in front of me. They insisted on comping the desserts and coffees and even to replace the main (though not necessary) . Perhaps not the worlds best beer boozer but a good place for a Sunday, with a relaxing atmosphere , thoughtful staff and manager and I think very excellent pub food.

Beer still average, food still good if expensive.
anonymous - 9 May 2007 15:02
Bit of a poser this one. First thing, it really is not a pub. it is geared to parties of well-heeled people sitting at tables eating. I would never in a million years use this as a local. It can be ludicrously poncey and pompous (the barman took our order, mixed a cocktail, then brought us the wrong drinks) There is table service for drinks. All this costs money. That said, if you want a less formal restaurant where some people are eating and some arent, and you can afford 20 to 40 for a pub meal, and you don't want to mix with ordinary people, use the Bridge. If you want a proper pub, go to the Coach and Horses. Cote de Boeuf very good.
bulky - 29 Apr 2007 12:10
I'd agree the beer selection is dull - standard issue chemical lagers + one or two staid ales - would be nice to see some Fullers or Youngs in here as well.

The 'soulless' comments are well-founded, as well. The clientele can be a bit Chav-heavy -i was here late one night and a full-on brawl broke out which the staff were not up for stopping - in the end the police attended, and it was all rather dramatic.

Food - really rather over-priced - unless paying 15 pounds for a steak thrown on a grill by a passing australian back-packer is your idea of value.

This is a great pub and my local. It used to be a terrible grey smokestained pub full of old men sipping their halves of mild. Now the wonderful thing is that it is full of great food, lovely staff with happy yet relaxed atmosphere but even the old regulars still are happy to come in. A democratic pub where all are welcome.

It doesn't have the most adventurous bitters but the quality is always excellent and you are guaranteed a great night, afternoon or day.
mrroberts - 27 Oct 2006 17:13
It's not a bad place, but I agree with the comments about it lacking soul. Perhaps it'll develop character over time.

Food was pretty decent, and a good selecton of wines for people who like that sort of thing. Beer was of the European variety - not bad, but you wouldn't want to live on the stuff.

I Really like this place, friendly atmosphere and the food is excellent (try the pork belly). Great beer and wine selection and the staff are very friendly also!
london123 - 9 Oct 2006 14:16
Well I don't know about the atmosphere comments. I find all of the staff helpful and friendly. The Garden is nice on a sunny afternoon and the food; although a little expensive is well worth it. Drinks can be ordered at the tables without getting up (Unheard of!). I would give it a 9/10.

PS They mix the best Maheto's this side of Cuba!

PS The serving girls are very pleasing to the eye!

Not sure about this place. It's nice enough looking but it feels a bit soulless to me somehow, like it's not sure if it's trying to be a pub or a restaurant and has got caught somewhere in between. I can't comment on the food as I only had a pint here before moving on. I wouldn't recommend it, I'd rather drink in a pub not trying to be something else, with a bit of atmosphere.
C.B - 11 May 2006 12:55
really good atmosphere and nice selection of drinks here. only visited on the weekend, but will be back to try during the week.

I had a sunday lunch at the Bridge just recently and was really impressed with the meal and service the staff looked after us really well and the lamb was cooked to perfection. I would definatley go back there for another meal, or drinks.
Tamzin - 3 Feb 2006 15:36
OK for a drink. Decent range of beers and especially wines. Nice decor, and you can see why the hack from various national newspaper have given good reviews. However, one suspects they only stopped for a drink, looked at the menu, and then left.

Nobody was impressed with the food (there were four of us on my last visit) and it's expensive as well. To be honest, if you're in the area to drink, this ain't a bad choice. If you're eating there are better restaurants across the road and on Church Road in Barnes. A shame, because this part of the world could do with a nice boozer where you can enjoy a bite to eat. At the moment, the Bridge is about halfway there.
burnsy - 4 Nov 2005 15:34
Not very impressive at all, quite dull and seems to be trying much too hard to be "trendy" (and failing). The food, as has been said, is none too impressive and the atmosphere was very muted. Not recommended.
CityGent - 20 Oct 2005 16:50
well, i'm blowed if i can see what the fuss is about. i was told its on of the top ten gastropubs in britain - but its very average. the decor is a bit ropey, the staff are VERY slow and lazy and don't seem to care, and the food - well, i've eaten there 3 times, the best it has been is OK. had the burger today -dreadful. liek your mum made in the 80's. you coudl taste the egg binding, and it was served in crusty bread which made it impossible to eat.

The red lion in barnes is about 1000 times better, for service and for food.
nimhbus - 25 Mar 2005 21:47
The surf and turf is amazing, not to mention the customer service....it is great to have a local like The Bridge.
S Macdonald - 18 Nov 2004 15:48
Great food, healthy menu, friendly service and good value including the wine - also a sunny outside garden or snug inside decor to add to the experience - Ian

Why go to the Sun Inn when you've got this place! And none of the boring old local men. The food is excellent and summer evenings on the decking are great, Really friendly staff too.

A fantastic, very trendy place to eat in the area. Highly recommended. Great for luncheons, dinners, drinking and parties.

Excellent Pub. Highly recommend it over the Sun Inn etc.

Love this place. Murray and his staff make it the friendliest place in Barnes by far. Food is excellent and winter evenings by the fire are great. Miss the scallops though.
Darrin James - 15 Oct 2003 21:52
Excellent pub both for meeting up with friends for a drink and eating. The food is excellent and the atmousphere is relaxed. There is a nice outdoor decking area with patio heaters which is lovely on a summers evening.

Whole heartedly agree. A pub that has completely turned itself around and been successful. Friendly staff.Worth one more visit.
anon - 13 Oct 2003 00:01
This pub is great. It has the nicest staff in Barnes and the food's not bad either. Everyone who is sick of the rude staff in the Sun Inn and the exhorbitant prices in the Red Lion should go there.
