Royal Oak, Wootton Riversback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
The Wadworth 6X here is an amazing 3.40 per pint. Back home in the Midlands, we rarely pay more than 2.05 a pint for real ale. In fact, there were protests when our local brew, Marston's EPA, went up from 1.95 to 2.05 a pint at my local (The White Horse in Norton, Stourbridge). They vowed not to increase the price afterwards and it has remained at that price for literally ages since. (19/07/2012 at the time of this writing). I think Wadworth's directors must be living the good life in The Maldives or on Barbados if they have to charge such wicked prices. Get a grip, I say or, real ale fans, move north and show 'em the error of their ways. 3.40 a pint - I ask you. Tell 'em where they can stick it. These are telephone directory prices! Wadworth, for Pete's Sake, get a grip!

We visited here on the way home from Newbury Races on our local Club outing. Our organiser looked at the Royal Oak earlier in the year as a stop-off point for a meal for what ended up as a 52 seat coach load. For the faint-hearted coach driver, not somewhere to drive to without exploring the route first - VERY narrow lanes and only just enough space to turn round at the car park entrance.
Pub-wise, Wadworth's 6X straight from the barrel and one guest beer "Down Under". Being straight from the barrel, beer was excellent, if a bit pricey at 3.30. Food-wise, all were more than happy with the three-course meals we had pre-ordered.
We will be returning next year, if not before!

wow what can i say.... i love this pub! I stayed in the royal oak after a long canal cycle with a friend, and i have to stay the comfortable B+B was a very welcome sight. we were shown to our rooms after we were offered the use of their barn to lock our bikes away (this, im sure wasn't needed as its such a quiet location) but it was nice and we took up the offer. The rooms were warm, comfortable and clean, what more do you need?! We cleaned up and went to dinner, wow what a selection and the food was freshly cooked and apparently locally brought, the staff were friendly and very helpful. We even ventured into the 'bar area' after dinner and got chatting to the joyful locals! After a good nights sleep the english breakfast certainly set us up for another long days cycling. Although we were almost sad to leave!

I spent a week lodging in this pub and can honestly say that the rooms were clean and comfortble, the atmosphere was warm and friendly and the food was delicious. This is a great pub for locals and visitors alike, well worth fnding!

beautiful area, well kept garden and drinking patio. one of the largest selections of spirits i have seen. a great pub if you are walking along the canal. and a menu that may be even too large. not all to my taste but nevertheless found about five choices i would have liked. i wouldnt normally risk anything too complicated in a pub this far from a hospital but i had calves liver that was well cooked and presented, and a good portion. worth the trip out to the sticks. parking was a bit limited but it was sunday and a walk was by no means unpleasant.

We finally visited the pub after driving past the sign for it for years. What a dissapointment. The roast beef was stringy, the roast potatoes were deep fat fried not roasted. The steak and guinness pie was sorely lacking guinness and completly tasteless, the chips had been over cooked in stale oil. As for the welcome not very hospitable considering they write on the menu card `child friendly` but certainly not baby friendly. Our 1 year old daughter recieved some disapproving looks and we weren`t even offered a highchair. We have had better food and quality service at the Harvester and better value for money. Needless to say we won`t be going back or recommending to even our worst enemy.

I spent a night at the Royal Oak, the room had clean linen but was generally not clean, the bathroom was not clean, however the sanitary ware was cleanish,ie grimy, the service was in different, the drinks were expensive, the food was second rate and expensive and the toilets filthy, there was some doubt over the strength of a mixed drink, which I am considering reporting to Trading Standards, and generally the atmosphere was tolerant but not welcoming. The area was fantastic, plenty of walks and fabulous countryside, shame about the monopoly in Wootton Rivers.

Largest menu I have ever seen in a pub, a bit dated inside but probably down to its location. I think I had the same member of staff as below - couldn't raise one smile. Food was good and a nice quiet location, dog & child friendly. Would go again but ensure I got another barmaid/man!

Miserable pub with the same old ignorant locals ignoring any strangers who dare step over the threshhold. Avoid barmaid Jodi at all costs, unless you thrive on bad attitudes want her to sacrifice your pets

Good evening food. Pool table and jukebox in the room on the side. Well placed for walks along the canal and N Wessex downs.

16th Century inn with low beamed ceilings, great food and atmosphere. Like going bak in time and well worth a visit. Has rooms with en-suite so a great place to go for a weekend
