Another cracking pub - maybe a bit more modern inside.
Long well lit bar, real fire, black sheep in fine condition.
Loving Castleton!

Great lunch in here with mate and the ladies. Huge portion of cod and a delicious farmers blonde ipa. A great place to fuel up for the clim to peveril castle!!!
|
Was very impressed with this pub. It was lively and welcoming and had some excellent beers on. A well maintained interior and pleasant little outside area.
|
we have been here before and it didnt dissapoint this time round had a lovely meal and plenty of it and a nice cold drink (it was midweek) so a little quieter than the weekends fab views from the beer garden of castleton 5 stars from us on food, drinks and service
|
Didn't eat there, just had a couple of pints. Decent selection of ales on tap, five or six I think although I don't think any of them were from local breweries. They had Landlord, Schiehallion, Bitter and Twisted, Butcombe's Old Vic and a couple of others, beer was fine and somewhere between 2.50-3.00 a pint. Service was pretty quick and freindly although it was quiet when we went in.
|
Good selection of real ales in perfectly fine condition when I visited. I little pricey but to be expected considering the location. The only complaint is the one paced and unhelpful bar staff. In sympathy they seemed cheesed off with having to deal with irate customers who either hadn't had or had been given the wrong food order, while queues grew at the bar.

biggest load of crap rude and garbage food they prob microwaved
|
if im near the pub on a sunday i always come here for my sunday roast they are the best!!

Typical chain pub in a guaranteed busy location. "Not particularly interested, just hand over your money and bugger off". High staff turnover and shortages because of (apparently) poor management. The food is camouflaged "Pub plastic", microwavable and overpriced. Castleton is a "honeytrap" village in the Peak district and usually full of tourists who will eat and drink anything to keep the kids quiet. Complacency rules in this particular pub. Plenty of chips and fizzy pop if you can find a bartender.
|
Definitely the worst food I have had for a long time. All veg including the sweet potato looked microwaved and no seasoning, Chewy meat, despite it being pumped full of water. Beer pretty average. Bull across the road loads better
|
Sh*tloads of handpumps, but filled with sh*tloads of sh*t. Never seen a pub have so many handpumps and fill it with rubbish! Food not great either.
|
The food is standard pub fayre - reasonably priced and for soaking beer.
The beer was very good and service friendly. A decent pub in my view.
|
An excellent pint of Doom Bar on Saturday (better than in Cornwall!).
A bit expensive, but understandable given the seasonal considerations
|
Packet food pub! So disappointing! The menu looks very appealing but,the food was dried and untasty. It's expensive for the poor quality. Long waiting time. Our glasses were dirty. The waitress exchange them for an other couple of dirty glasses. The table was dirty too.. No soap in the ladies toilet and the water was difficultly running... And the staff was slow and unefficient.. We decided to get an ice cream in a petrol station for our dessert. At least there, we know what we get!

We stayed at The Castle this week and found it O.K. We didn't eat there apart from breakfast which was continental and excellent (as much as you could eat) Our room was in the basement and the toilet fan made a dreadful noise but a great time was had and no complaints.

Given that this pub is opposite the main tourist car park it's obvious most visitors will probably stop here for a drink/meal hence why it's usually the busiest of pubs in the area. I actually quite like coming here whenever I visit Castleton - the beer is nice and the food is only what you would expect pub food to be. The pub is friendly, upbeat and comfortable with different partitions housing real coal fires and traditional decor. It might not be the perfect setting for some and the odd person may have service issues (which pub/restaurant doesn't) but for me, it's a great little place to chill out on a fine day in Castleton.

Visited lunchtime on 21st April. The beer was fine good choice of Black Sheep, Thwaites bomber, and Thwaites IPA. The food however was not up to the standard of the beer. The soup was defrosted in a microwave and came in 2 sections, the watery part and the cottage cheese looking part. Sandwiches were thin on content, thick on bread. Overall an experience to be missed.

It is so true that it is the Macdonalds of pubs. The food is bobbah and overpriced, but for some reason is always busy.
It shows how simple some tourists are.
The one saving grace was that it used to have attractive girls working there. There is now no nowt doing, so avoid like the plague.

Not Much better than the Bull to be honest

I quite agree with the comments made by David Holmes. The service lately is not as good as it once was, but the food is very tasty. I have not seen as many of the older regular staff lately, and the staff now are younger and do not seem as well trained. Although we went to the Castle a few weeks ago on a Saturday evening, and were served by a young man by the name of Matt, who was extremely polite and helpful.

Whilst the food was top notch, the service left a lot to be desired. The plates were spotless and the food was, although mass produced, very tasty. The large chap behind the bar with glasses was quite helpful, but appearred to be a part-timer. I would recommend the pub, for the stunning views, i.e. the staff and the location. One waitress made our little baby cry, but the whole visit was completely satisfactory until we came to pay. The old old lady behind the till was v. agressive and was more bothered about getting her money than my satisfaction.

The first thing one notices about this pub is the stange, musty smell, especially in the back room. If you are in a hurry, or even mildly hungry don't order food here as they seem to take an astonishingly long long time to deliver even the simplest of meals (we ordered a burger that appeared to be a cheap iceland style burger and bun, and poor quality oven chips). When we queried why our food had not turned up after 40 minutes, the staff were very unhelpful, and really not bothered. The food is really not worth the wait. Go to The Bulls Head across the road instead!

This is a little gem of a pub in a beautiful area, if you like tea and scones this is the place for you. This pub has large no smoking areas, outside seating and also accomodation is available.
|
Good pub....if you get the right staff!!
Food mass produced but quick, cheap and easy.
Mirjam (Assistant manager) is fantastic!

Hi. I did not enjoy my visit to this pub at all. We received the worst customer service we have ever experienced and the manager was shockingly rude. When asked if she valued our custom she replied, Well Ive taken 10 grand already today and shrugged her shoulders. The food was ok but obviously mass produced. The staff were not particularly helpful and seemed to think they were being 'particularly accommodating' when they deviated from the printed menu and allowed a customer to have potatoes instead of chips. (After lots of huffing and puffing) Wow!! Very accommodating!!!! I would not recommend this establishment.
|
Really good food is served in this hotel pub. Its worth walking here from Edale rather than eating in any of the pubs there.
|

|
This is a nice enough pub atmosphere and food wide but the only real ales that were on offer were Bass and Tetleys and they are just awful.
|
I have stayed here a few times round christmas, and the pub and village always puts you in that christmas spirit

The touristy chain pub in Castleton (it's owned by Vintage Inns).
Not a drinkers pub - more the McD's of boozers....

Eaten here a few times, very nice food, try the profiteroles as a dessert. Free top ups of very nice coffee. We want to stay but always fully booked, so must be nice. Supposed to be haunted.
