This takes some finding if you don't know the area, but is worth it.
Good real ales and better-than-average pub food, friendly staff.
Pleasant, amiable atmosphere.

Went in on a Tuesday evening. Friendly bar staff providing samples of the 5 beers on tap. Tried Wadworths- Old Timer & Wadworths - Dray Bells. The place has a good atmosphere and just the right balance between a pub and a restuarant.

I must also add that we had a wonder buffett after the wedding and it was very reasonably priced and the food was very good. Thank you

I send this message to thank all at the fox and hounds, sunnyside, theale. We recently attended the f&h for a wedding reception and had such a beautiful day that i felt compelled to write something (very unusual for me).
The service was great with a smile and they really took care of us. I was the best man so had a lot to organise, they really helped me out with decorations and table arrangements etc. My favourite thing about this place is that it keeps that balance between a pub and a good restaurant. A lovely place to visit. If you are in the area stop in for a pint or two....

My husband and I visited this pub for our wedding anniversary and found the customer service second to none. The Manager is friendly, with time to spend on his customers. Our meal was delicious, was hot and looked really tempting - couldn't wait to get "stuck in." We also considered it very good value for money. Although neither my husband or I drink, my husband (from his past) found the choice of ales very interesting and tempting. I would not hesitate in visiting this pub again when in the area and would highly recommend it to anyone. I should add that the staff were both friendly, helpful and the service was good.

4 of us visited this pub for an evening out. As soon as we arrived and before we had settled at a table, the barmaid starting asking us what we wanted to drink. The meals are typical, but overpriced, pub food, everything with chips except the vegetarian options. The food was acceptable, but the vegetarian special, vegetable madras served with rice and garlic bread (!) was inedible. It contained overcooked veg, in a watery bland sauce with no hint of curry flavour. And the garlic bread didn't arrive either. I expected to be offered an alternative or not to be charged, but the waitress was sorry I didn't like it but charged the full price anyway! None of us actually finished the meals which says something. I could not recommend this pub and would not go there again, there are many better pubs in the area.

We would not normaly post a review on the internet, prefering not to take the cowardly option and make any worthwhile and constuctive comments to the person concerned. We can remember when the Fox and Hounds was a run down, dirty pub for the boys, which was struggling to stay open. Daryl and Kate have transformed the Fox and Hounds into a family freindly venue which offers a good selection of real ales and food at resonable prices. We have no hesitation recomending the Fox and Hounds to our family and friends.
|
My wife and I use local pubs regularly and know them well. The Fox & Hounds in Theale is undoubtedly one of the best, very friendly at all levels, with very good food which is not overpriced compared with other local pubs. It is now our 'Regular'. That should speak for itself. It is also dog-friendly, which is excellent for us.

ok so me and my husband visited this pub a few weeks ago after it was recommened to us along with a few other pubs in the area. The pub itself is well kept and plesent. We went on a friday night, (our night!) and it was quite busy, mostly drinkers with a few people eating here and there.
I did feel uncomfortable striaght away however as the atmosphere was missing. Most of the staff seemed under 18, and clearly were not happy. The young waitresses were lovely however.
Beer and ale choice was fantastic, a nice selection of well kept wadworths ales ( my husband was pleased!) And nice wine selection ( maybe a bit pricey?)
The man i think was the manager (??) seemed to walk around talking to customers alittle too much, and it all seemed like a well rehused act if you ask me!
The main menu had a good selection of food although maybe a little pricey, there was also alot of choice on the specials board although again quite pricey .
I had fish and chips and my husband had steak, both were resonable pub gurb, nothing fancy and not much love had gone into these basic meals. Great if you want a quick supper, but be prepared to pay over the odds for it and have a long conversation with the manager!
Staff are freindly enough although the pub feels like a weekend young persons 'bar' rather than a comfy country pub. we were disappointed and wont be returning for a nice romantic meal in a hurry maybe wait till the summer and enjoy the beautiful gardens instead!

I loved all the Wadsworth beer that I tried which was kept in best of order. The landlord was very friendly and treated us like friends. three of our family had steak which was excellent and my daughter had a goats cheese salad which she really enjoyed. The pub has a very good atmosphere with friendly, cheerful and helpful staff. I would recomend it to anybody.

AMAZING!!!! This friendly pub with warm inviting atmosphere was simply wonderful. The staff were on the ball and very attentive and as for the food, it was top notch. The landlord greeted us and gave us an insight to all of the Wadsworth ales and the kitchen staff were very accommodating for my dietry needs. Would really recommend this delightful pub and look forward to our next visit in the near future. :-)

Once again we have just returned from a lovely night at the Fox & Hounds. We have visited this pub most Friday's for the past 12 years or so. Seeing many managers come and go, but the current Management Team, we have to say are fantastic and the staff very Friendly. They have worked very hard to build this pub up and succeeded in every aspect. This can be seen by the number of customers now enjoying this family pub. Roll on next week

The Fox has been a regular for us for many years. Situated about a mile outside the village of Theale and junction 12 of the M4, it's easy to reach but far enough out to have a country feel. There is also a good parking area and a garden for those warmer days. This year we decided to have our Christmas Meal at the Fox and booked in advance for 12 of us. The meal was a set meal which is ideal as there was no messing about with people trying to remember who ordered what! As always the food was great and the waitress service was friendly, efficient and polite. The pub is quite cosy with wooden beams, a sofa area at one end, a Pool table to burn off the dinner and a roaring open fire at the other end! We've always had excellent service there and would have no issue recommending it to others.

Attended a Christmas dinner with 20 work colleagues today, & in my opinion the food tasted processed and the service very poor. Once the first few plates were served (Turkey & trimmings mainly), there was a wait of approx 15-20 minutes before everybody had been served. Several people were served with roast spuds which were still raw inside - so instead they were offered chips because it would take an hour to parboil the next batch of potatoes. Turkey (processed, not carved), sprouts, gravy and chips. Not good for 16.95. It was explained that the roasties were raw because we had changed our booking, so chef hadnt known how many to cater for. I guess the last minute panic presumably meant that chef was allowing uncooked food to leave the kitchen? True, we had changed the booking but this was a week beforehand, so chef ought to have been able to react to this. Strangely, the front of house staff knew exactly how many to cater for, because they had laid the correct they number of place settings at our table but maybe hadnt communicated this to chef. In summary probably ok for a drink but best avoided for eating in my opinion.

I consider the Fox & Hounds to be my local - it's a bit quiet sometimes (since it's a bit of a walk from Theale, and most people will drive there).
Since it was done up and under new a new landlord, it's become more of a gastro-pub with a decent range of nice food - I've been there for lunch and dinner maybe a dozen times and it's always been decent. The beer is usually good, though the range is limited to Wadworth only.
All in, a good pub for a spot of unpretentious, reasonably priced grub and a pint or two.

A comfortable pub in nice surroundings serving the full range of Wadworths beers. However, food not very good, small portions and a bit pricy. No real pub atmoshpere just plenty of elderly folk enjoying grandma's birthday. Innofensive , but I won't be rushing back.
|
We went to this pub for sunday dinner a few weeks ago. Not too much choice available. 10.95 for sunday road (beef) is a rip off - one slice of beef (albeit a thicker slice than normal) and three roast potatoes, with a whole heap of veg. The price needs to be lowered.
The started was nice though - chicken and leek soup.
Probably won't go going back in a hurry.

Not too impressed by this pub. It looks like it used to be a really nice pub if the exterior is anything to go by. Unfortunately the interior has been modernised and the place seems to cater mainly for diners, except on the evening we visited - apparrently there is no food on a Sunday evening. There were 5 beers from the Wadworth range - Bishops Tipple, Henry's IPA, Maypole Mild, JCB and 6X. My eyes lit up when I saw the Westons Traditional Scrumpy. But alas there was none available. Stowford Press was a poor substitute. This doesn't feel like a real pub - more an upmarket wine bar/gastro pub.
|
We're a bit miffed with this pub at the moment. A few weeks ago there was a sign outside saying 20% off food. We went in and ate only to be told when we paid the bill that the meals we had had did not qualify for the offer. Two unhappy bunnies now drinking elsewhere.
|
I'd echo the recent comments - since it's been done up after the smoking ban, it's a totally different place - more of a mid-range gastro pub than a foodie heaven, and not the drinker's den that it used to be.
Makes a pleasant stop off for lunch, serves a good range of Wadworth beers too.

Quite impressed on our first visit. Inside is quite cavernous and nicely fitted out, also sports the best toilets in the Reading area, very nice.
5 Wadworth ales on the go in fair condition. Food was pretty good too, decent portions at a fair price.
Quite quiet for a Saturday afternoon, which is surprising. I'd recommend it on first showing, a good place to take the missus or grandma.

Used to use this pub alot a long time ago, sadly it went down hill in recent years. After hearing it has been taken over by new management and refurbished my wife and i decided to give it a try last sunday for lunch. beer was good and the food was exellent. my roast beef was a little too rare for me,but when i asked if i could have it cooked some more it was done instatly by the friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble!! We had a nice chat with Matt (who turned out to be one of the managers, the other is his partner, the chef)behind the bar upon paying, he was very down to earth and seemed to know his business. all in all we can see this pub becoming our new favourite local. definatly recommended
|
Visited the Fox & Hounds for Sunday lunch. Has been very nicely refurbished both externally and internally. Sadly on arrival we were seated but not offered a menu then asked if we were ready to be served! We were told menu was on the blackboard above where people were sat eating. We all opted for Sunday roast. We were soon told even though the restaurant was practically empty the Lamb was not available. On arrival the food looked awful, meat was rare could not see the vegatables and potatoes need a jack hammer. The preices were very high for the fayre. What a shame we have visited this pub many times under the old management and never been disappointed.
|
I visited this pub several times over the New Year period and found the staff and the fayre excellent. You don't need to be a millionaire to eat or drink there to enjoy the newly refurbished pub. It was so good I would go out of my way to have a beer and a bite there again. I found the management extremely friendly and helpful - that's why I went back several times during my stay south of the border. A french style menu full of many exciting and tasty dishes.
The 6X was tasty stuff and I tried many of the other beers during my few trips over the threshhold.
Well worth a visit!

The pub has now been refurbished an looks very nice. The beers are the same as before but much more expensive. In fact the drink prices are the dearest I have I have ever come across. There is no jazz night any more on a Tuesday night which was a big attraction. This pub is best avoided unless you are very rich and like paying high prices for very ordinary fare.
|
Went for Lunch and compatriots had the 5 buffet which seemed good value if you want to eat a lot and looked quite nice and VFM. Draft JJ Henry's IPa was very good. Wadworth's 6X not quite so. Both beers served with good condition.
|
Used to be a great pub with good food, beer and friendly staff but sadly changed now.
Went for a meal with 3 other people on a Tuesday night.
Food was very bad, lasagne was so hard you could not get a fork in it. Waitress said she would replace it, came back and said it would be 5 minutes but it did not arrive for nearly 20 minutes.
Also ordered a chilli enchilada, this was only just warm.
Steak and ale pie had minimal filling in the dish was so over cooked that the meat was hard but the pastry was pale.
Even the sausages were cooked to a standard that a crematorium would be happy with.
Cheesey garlic bread was under cooked and soggy.
Asked the waitress to see the manager but she returned and said he did not have time to see us!!!!
The only consolation here was there was a live Jazz band on hence the score of 1.
I don't think I saw any of the staff look happy all evening (bar or waiting staff).
This pub is now best avoided if you want to eat.

The dog is on the roof because of the flat upstairs. Good pub, but way too much smoke and quite stuffy. Nice beer and good food!!
|
As a non-smoker I found the heavily smoke-filled bar uncomfortable. I couldn't understand why there were signs saying 'No Smoking' actually placed on the bar whilst,in the rest of the bar area, smoking was allowed. The pub is also a regular meeting place (3rd Wednesday of the month) for a group of transvestites, who initially congregate in the bar area. They are, however, allocated their own area.

a dogs some how gets on the roof!lovely pub with a great atmosphere with a great choice of drinks

Nice country pub not far from the Kennet & Avon canal. Tends to shut at odd times on summer afternoons.
