user reviews of the Devereux, Temple

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Reasonable pub in my view, though certainly others in the area are better (Seven Stars and Edgar Wallace would be my top two as well). However it is apparently closing down at the weekend, and will definitely be a loss. LIkely to end up as housing or offices I'm afraid.
mike_s - 22 Feb 2017 17:04
It's all right but doesn't have the character of the other pubs nearby namely the Seven Stars and the Edgar Wallace. Beer was Taylor Walker: the barrel had just gone on so it may not have had time to settle.
rainlight - 9 Apr 2016 09:30
We decided to use the Devereux as the starting point for a mini pub crawl. Perhaps we should have chosen The Edgar Wallace around the corner instead? But the since the Devereux features in the current CAMRA Good Beer Guide and we'd never been in there before, it was mainly an exercise in "box ticking". A range of four fairly unimaginative real ales were on offer, so we chose a pint each of Taylor Walker 1730 and Truman's Runner for which we were charged an eye watering £8.90! To make matters worse, the quality of the beer was "mediocre". There was nothing special about the pub itself - though it is situated in an interesting and largely hidden part of London devoted to legal profession - perhaps they don't mind paying £4.45 for a pint but I do!
DaveE6 - 28 Jul 2015 10:06
We love the deveruex. Great spot for a pint of (well kept and varied) ale after a wander around temple inn next door. If on the strand and tempted to go into the infinitely inferior George, go in here instead.
TommyRogers1979 - 17 Nov 2014 12:48
Agree with the last post. Called in on a Friday night and the place was dead. Me & a friend were the only people in there. However I get the feeling that even if it was packed to the rafters it'd still be quite soulless. Quite a bit out of the way so doubt it has passing trade but has the potential to be better.
CityAlbion - 24 Jul 2014 17:02
Next stop on my Thursday night crawl and I was pretty disappointing to be honest.

5 ales on tap, my pint from the Colchester Brewery was decent.

Old fashioned pub but modern in décor and to be honest quite soulless.

I too sat on the comedy vibrating seat without realizing.

I don't expect to ever re-visit this place.
lezford - 12 Aug 2013 13:55
Apologies to all.
My review of 6 Feb. was actually about the Edgar Wallace pub nearby, went there with friends and didn't actually check the name ! I haven't visited the Devereux but certainly will do soon.

Jimdee - 8 Feb 2013 20:57
First visit last week and had lunch there. Atmospheric bar decorated with Advertisements from days gone by; interesting to see how many you can remember !
Between three of us we sampled all the bitters and all were average to good, not cheap but it is the West End. Food was good standard pub fare and arrived quickly (probably because they're used to dealing with customers who only have an hour for lunch)
Staff seemed welcoming and friendly.
Don't know how it would be in the evening but would recommend for a lunchtime pint and meal.

Jimdee - 6 Feb 2013 11:37
Nice enough Shepherds Neame boozer with the usual ale range. People eating and drinking. Nice friendly barmaid to talk too and some chatty regulars too. Spitfire was knob on too! Will be back! 7/10
ng10 - 27 Jan 2013 15:37
Similar to the previous reviewer, came in here on a Friday night when it seemed like every other pub nearby was full to bursting. I am actually a big fan of Shepherd Neame beers but the Spitfire wasn't terribly nice. My wife had the Hook Norton Hooky bitter. Both pints seemed to be very slightly flat and uninspired (and, in common with the experience of the previous reviewer, were served short). As to the pub, it looks promising from the outside, being situated down an alleyway near the Temple, but it features a rather bland, refurbished interior, with irritating canned music playing. Food is on offer but appeared very expensive for what looked like (on the menu) Wetherspoon's style meals.
beermann - 17 Dec 2012 10:37
We visited this pub because the Edgar Wallace next door was very crowded due to the upstairs being reserved for a private party. Not a good move, especially in comparison with the Edgar. Unpleasant interior and we seemed to get the comedy vibrating seat, I thought at first it was a tube passing under the pub but it was continual. The beer selection was uninspiring and included my all-time least favourite beers, Youngs/Wells and Shepherd Neame; the saving grace was that the Doom Bar was decent, and my mate drank the Old Peculier which was apparently good as well. What particularly irked was the appalling short measures, each of our three rounds we had to ask for the beers to be topped up, so clearly it’s either ignorance on behalf of the staff or deliberate short changing. The clientele were very much of the city/barrow boy type, perfectly matched to the charmless, characterless interior. The toilets smelt horrible but at least there was soap in the dispenser and the hand dryer worked. I’d give the beer 7 out of 10 for quality, the pub 3/10 for ambience, so an overall 6/10 from me, I won’t be visiting again and wouldn’t recommend it, though of course other people may like this type of pub.
Monkdawallydahonk - 16 Nov 2012 11:58
Cosy little pub tucked away in a side street near the Legal area and adjacent to the Edgar Wallace in Essex Street. Tidy. panelled place with 4 pulls; the Youngs was on top form but the choice of beers was unimaginative from the larger breweries. Will return if visiting the Wallace next door.
JBGatelad - 13 May 2011 09:53
A Nice pub tucked down a side street clean bright and friendly. just as a good pub should be
beerbones - 15 Dec 2010 14:46
Stumbled across this pub tonight for the first time in a few years was very happy to find it warm, just the right level of busy and serving mulled wine! my kind of heaven!!!
the Dev seems to have had a lick of paint since i was last there or maybe it was the pretty barmaid making the place seem better than i remember? who knows, but what ever has changed its made the pub. will be back here again after ice skating in somerset house next week.
deluxejellyfish - 7 Dec 2010 00:20
Been coming here for meetings 2 or 3 times a month for several years; 4 Real Ale pumps; one will be a well known brew & the others more unusual; food used to be good, but they now have a new menu which is not so good on choice or quality, just OK; I'll still eat there.
Had some Spitfire yesterday, was OK but seemed slightly watery, maybe as I'd already had several good brews in a neighbouring pub; tried some Derailed Ale (Box Steam?) which was good & so had a couple more.
PhiltheHeathen - 26 Aug 2010 15:14
Good beer and good atmosphere: a pleasant place to have a pint, or two, or three... Food (in my experience) rather ordinary -- not bad, but certainly not for gourmets.
cato - 19 Feb 2010 16:54
Old style single L-shaped room with traditional decor and furniture. The Devereux is in a courtyard away from any main rod and would seem to be mostly populated by legal types. I do recall in the late 80s and early 90s though this was the haunt for some of my friends from Arthur Andersen just up in Arundel St.

Although it's a nice enough pub with a decent beer selection I prefer one or two of its competitors in the immediate vicinity.
murgatroyd - 9 Nov 2009 16:26
Very nice pub just off the beaten track. In the upstairs room the smell of the kitchen was a bit too invasive though and not good if you are not dining yourself. I'd have preferred it to be more enclosed. The food delivery system ssemed a bit haphazard too. Very good beers though. On the drinks front I can't fault it.
doasyouwouldbedoneby - 1 Nov 2009 21:17
This is a decent sized L-shaped pub that had Pride, Greene King IPA and Broadside all available during my visit alongside three guest ales. There is also a standard draught range and my Guinness was well served.

There was no background music and the plasma was showing Sky News, which was muted.

I thought that the staff were friendly and that this is a good pub, but it doesnt really stand out of the crowd in an area of good pubs.
Strongers - 8 Oct 2009 15:57
Late afternoon pint was well rewarded with really friendly and engaging bar staff who offered samples of ale before deciding what to choose. Keen to know your views as well. Mine a light Everard's number which was fresh and just right for a July afternoon. View from outside deceives also, as this is a roomy and spacious boozer. Imagine tone changes with the arrival of the legal pin stripes after five, having made their millions across the road, but a late afternoon visit is the perfect time to experience a wonderfully well kept and friendly pub.
curleysue - 30 Jul 2009 21:02
Was here last night for a quick drink before seeing a show. It's a great location, tucked away in an alleyway at the edge of the Temple. But the interior is pretty characterless. This was our second visit here, following a winter visit a few years ago. It was much busier this time around. Has a mixture of tourists and local workers. The real ale selection was not too original - London Pride, Greene King IPA, Bombardier & Adnam's Broadside. I wouldn't venture back here in a hurry - there's plenty of other local places I prefer - Edgar Wallace, Seven Stars, Old Cheshire Cheese etc.
blue_scrumpy - 22 Jul 2009 20:42
Great pub with great real ales, the little tubby manager and his identical twin sister make the place complete.
Never had a bad pint there yet, although the wait on the food sometimes stretches the British concept of lunch "hour."
Good selection of beers, what more could a man want?
harrythebastard - 6 May 2009 23:55
Last tuesday I had the best pub lunch of my life the, sausage were exellente whit cream fuffy mash(mash melts in your mouth) and well flauvoured gravy. Food is uncommonly good here, other spirit group houses nearby run the same menu but they do even come close . no idea about the booze as I dont drink during the day but if they take this much care over their food , I`d be astonished if it is any less than exeptional. This may sound gushing but it is very good,,,thanks and congratulations to the chefs and kitchen team. ( recommend)
bety - 25 Apr 2009 17:55
After spending 3 Monday nights in here I must say..
I really, really like the function room! It's totally private, no strangers walking around (so you can just leave your stuff in a corner and not worry about it)..
Food & drinks are definitely reasonable in price and quality and the Monday staff is very nice :) Thanks guys, see ya soon!
ohsusyq - 26 Mar 2009 03:23
Bar in the middle with the drinking area in a horseshoe around it. Part of the seating area is divided by screens. Beer on Thursday night was Springhead Polar Beer, GK IPA and Isle of Purbeck Thermal Cheer. Pride was off. Thermal Cheer was a good enough pint.

OK pub.
GuideDogSaint - 24 Jan 2009 12:36
I was here today.I had fish and chips and it was lovely. They had four real ales, good temperature and quality.

Great place to have fun!

Gorgeous Lithuanian barmaid. This place is getting better. Will return!
maxpayne - 9 Jan 2009 00:48
Fairly sedate on a monday lunchtime but then I guess it would be... Smart and friendly enough and the Stocking Filler guest ale was well-kept and decent.

Not overly memorable for anything as such but not particularly offensive either.

Designed for office workers and tourists most like and serves them very well no doubt.
terenced - 16 Dec 2008 10:53
I thought that I had come across an unmarked example of the Nicholson's chain, except the beer quality (Theakstons Grouse Beater) was better and the service quicker. This place must have had some character once, but the interior is much less interesting than the historic location would suggest.
rpadam - 8 Oct 2008 23:07
With my comrades complaining about standing outside the Edgar up the street, we ventured into the Devereux with slight trepidation on my part, having seen some of the reviews on here. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The Batemans was in good nick, with GKIPA, Adnams, Pride and Spitfire also on offer. (Not a blindingly original selection I grant you)
Bar staff were friendly and quick, atmosphere inside was good, and although clearly a chain pub of some description, was quite comfortable and pleasant.

mrse1 - 2 Sep 2008 11:19
Went to this pub on friday lunch time and what a surprise..... Food was really great - service was friendly and the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. Compared to other back alley pubs this is a real diamond of a pub....

Completely rubbish place, please close the doors.
j.nonono - 22 Nov 2007 18:41
Paul please dont book the christmas party in the Devereux,do you remenber last year? complete chaotic and service slow and rude, camon read what the reviewers talk about.
anonymous - 29 Sep 2007 17:14
Not impressed by this pub ordered food which took over an hour to arrive and tasted pretty poor when it finaly did. Not cheap compare other pubs in the area either.
look666 - 25 Sep 2007 20:28
A disappointment. A gut-wrenching, tear-wringing, frustation filled disappointment. How GOOD should this place BE?!?!? Tucked away down a Dickensian alleyway, it could be fantastic - good food, good beer/ale and wine, some outside seating and decent staff and this place would be a gem. It is however, absolutely rubbish.
cohenfain - 15 Aug 2007 20:39
I have just returned from a meal here it has to be the worst pub food and sevice i have ever had. Extremely rude staff.
polskaevil - 26 Jul 2007 12:31
Blood-heat temperature beer was a diappointing surprise on my first visit recently. Not acceptable in a GBG listed pub.
Better bet for a pint of consistantly good quality can be found 30 seconds away in the Edgar Wallace.
mally - 21 Jul 2007 00:16
I liked the feel of the pub but that was late on a midweek in at atmospheric part of London - the Marstons VPA was very average.
mtaylor40 - 23 Jun 2007 22:02
A traditional English pub - very poor overpriced food, very poor service from the traditional Aussie barman and his helpers and the beer was disgusting. When I returned it, I got the traditional reply that everybody else was drinking it. Barman thinks the ultimate beer is cold lager - what an idiot.
anonymous - 20 Apr 2007 10:10
what a disapointment , chicken tested metal, under cooked sausage and rude staff the location and the beer is very good.Perhaps this pub was great some years ago.
simonstrand - 26 Mar 2007 10:07
been going down hill a bit recently....
MrScott - 21 Feb 2007 13:33
Never had a pint in here but have popped in here occasionally for a quiet read of the paper at lunch - ideal on a hectic day as the pub is often refreshingly quiet. The location is very good but the interior is, I suppose, a little London pub-by-numbers.
grecian - 4 Jan 2007 14:59
Nothing about this pub stands out in my memory regarding this pub other than the service was slow and rude. Old Speckled Hen was okay.
jorrocks - 28 Dec 2006 03:03
Certainly in agreement regarding the food issue. Microwaved pasta (or so it seemed at least) is really not a good look. And although the staff were friendly, the service did not inspire confidence.

Positive points included the cosiness of the pub itself, the fab location and the tasty seasonal beers. Come and drink by all means but hold on to your pint as it gets near the bottom. And stick to the crisps in the food department.
gcc24 - 13 Dec 2006 22:53
The atmosphere remains good but they really ned to sort the food out.
jamesbucker - 21 Oct 2006 15:57
I dont know what has happened to this place but the food has definitely gone down hill,This pub used to be a great place.
sallybath - 26 Sep 2006 13:43
Guys, guys, guys. This place isn't that bad really. OK, the food isn't the best, but it's not terrible. And the staff have always been reasonable when I've been there. It does get rammed with lawyer-types soon after work on weekdays (as you'd expect due to its location).
anonymous - 15 Sep 2006 14:13
Went there last night, expecting toe woest but I was pleasantly surprised. Quaint pub in a beautiful location. Quite romantic actually. Beer was good and the staff were friendly.
belgraviabarons - 13 Sep 2006 08:54
Agree whith the other reviewers this place is really terrible, bar staff arrogant slow and overworked, the wait at the bar even when it is dead quiet for me 15 mins and more 40mins for food.
satanmcfullen - 26 Aug 2006 11:01
Can't really comment on this place except to say that my recent meeting with the management was very cordial (I was looking for a party venue). I do however have a suspicious mind- there seems to have been several April reviews written in fairly poor English (does "Anonymous" on April 5th really sound like he/she worked in the city for 12 years?), with a strange use of full stops (could be the web site doing that I suppose), and all are just slamming the food.
Middler - 1 Aug 2006 18:23
It's in an interesting location and you would expect something more interesting on the inside but it wasn't to be.
mitomighty - 5 Jul 2006 13:43
A horrendous experience yesterday,,this pub wins the award for worst food in all london,,,A real shame because this establlismente used to be a great place to drink and eat ayear ago whith excelent chef special ,penne whith cheese cream sauce avocado and salmon,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,great
anonymous - 29 Apr 2006 13:45
The place is filthy the sevice appaling. The management are no where to be seen, so its impossible to complain if you choose to,and avoid the food...humm yes ok for drink.
redirelan07 - 22 Apr 2006 13:59
The worst service surly slow, worst food in the area,ok for a drink good range of ales ,,but dont be fooled by how nice the food looks on the menu, it isnt not one bit!
starcourtwc2 - 21 Apr 2006 21:33
Been in here a few times now and whilst the pub is comfortable and pleasant enough, it does come across as a bit pub-by-numbers. The history on the wall outside informs us that the building dates from 1676 and, like many pubs, it was previously a coffee house. There is little of historical interest in the L shaped bar and the interior is rather typical and, dare I say it, a bit reminiscent of a Wetherspoons. A few screens and partitions offer a few intimate areas and there is a widescreen TV for sport. I have not tried the upstairs bar. There is a decent range of Ales including the Greene King triple whammy of Abbot, IPA and Speckled Hen along with 2 guest Ales (Youngs and Batemans XXXB when I was there last week). The food looked pretty decent but was a rather typical and unadventurous selection (Fish & Chips, Pastas, Burgers, Ham & Eggs, Chickin Tikka). With main courses between 5-7, the prices are pretty reasonable for this area. Overall, nothing particularly wrong with the pub and with 4 pubs within 100 yards, this area of back streets makes a good nights drinking but the pub itself comes over as a bit devoid of its own character.
RogerB - 10 Apr 2006 13:40
I spent 12 years in the city and lunched regulary at Devereux ,and I have never had a bad meal there, unfortunately in the past year this place are coming so dark, dank, atmosphere and that extend to the rude and unhelpful staff, and the food now are so bad and dreadful,,,,piece of advice go to the Edgar Wallace pub .
anonymous - 5 Apr 2006 18:12
Didn't try the food, but the service as very friendly and the atmosophere was lively and fun. There is a large no-smoking area. Will return.
MissKitty - 9 Feb 2006 22:44
Moderately attractive pub with some nooks and crannies giving a cosy feel. Outside blackboard claims seven different cask ales - two of those in the upstairs bar - but this is only during certain periods; mostly they have four. It's an acceptable pub in a cute area. Of the four possible scooping pubs around Fleet Street this probably the most intimate and comfortable.
SilkTork - 13 Jan 2006 13:01
A good pub just to pop into. Had a good range of real ales on. Didn't order any food. Service was a bit slow, but when my friend enquired about a beer he was offered a free sample. Thought it excellant that half the downstairs bar is marked No Smoking.
snowdog2112 - 13 Jan 2006 11:32
Other reviews are a bit harsh. Sure it's not the best food you'll get in any pub in London, but the service is with a smile and it's fairly good value. I can think of a lot worse.
tom.breaker - 11 Jan 2006 18:48
OH MY God. if you take one piece of advice in your life take this ,do not order food from the Devereux
johnbouer - 9 Nov 2005 14:20
I have never in my entire life received such appaling service the staff are incredibly rude. The food we cannot comment on,sausage and mash the worst i have ever had.
anonymous - 27 Oct 2005 16:44
I just had the worst pub lunch I have ever had at this pub. Service was sluggish whilst the quality of food was ropey. How difficult is it to cook fish and chips? Seemingly impossisble as mine was raw! Portions small and customer service non-exsitent. It is also the coldest pub in London. Dreadful.
anonymous - 19 Aug 2005 13:38
Down a characterful dark alley, and full of a good selection of guest ales, which pleased me. Also full of a load of lawyer types, but they're ok I suppose. We didn't try the food but the menu sounded good.
jaq - 14 Feb 2005 16:56
Very enjoyable. A whole crowd of Henry Fieldings chewing the legalese. I drank myself to an early rave. Recommended. If lucky you might even find Sonny side up here.
Sonny Devereux - [email protected] - 26 Oct 2004 23:05
They do food until quite late and we popped in to have a sarnie each. Meat eating mates rate the sausages and other food, the few veggie options are tasty, the chips are good and the beer and staff are all pretty nice.

Most of the customers are lawyers and rich kids but London scruff-bag wizards have found the place and hold meetings in the cool upstairs room most Wednesdays.

Beer good, always a couple of real ales on, if you like that sort of thing. What is quite rare for a London pub is that most of the back-packer staff appear to be in a good mood most of the time.
MrScott - 22 Jan 2004 11:32
Like all London pubs the atmosphere was carcinogenic! Be sure to bring your goverenment surplus gas mask (purchased at Finchley Road Govt Surplus stores!) When is someone going to realise that passive smoking in pubs is not only ruining the nations health but is also depriving the pub owners of the patronage of the 70%
OF THE POULATION WHO DONT SMOKE? Atmospheric facism must be stamped out!
And Oh! Yes! You can also witness a fine old English custom in full swing here! The Englishman goes to the bar, buys a drink and then stands in front of the bar drinking it and chatting and thus effectively blocking access to the bar for other customers! A new chain of pubs in London seem to celebrate this custom by masquerading under the title of All Bar One!
By the way Robert Devereaux was a favourite lover of Elizabeth the first. The "Devereaux Arms" thus encompassed the "Virgin Queen" Gloriana!
dick turpentine - [email protected]. - 17 Jan 2004 02:33
Went here on a Tuesday night in January when most places are very quiet.

The Devereux was pleasantly busy and a bonus was that they served reasonable food until 10pm

Not a bad choice if you are in the area - close to Somerset House as well for those ice skaters out there
Northernbaldy - 11 Jan 2004 13:00
Very overrated. It had too much of the corporate sheen to it. Nice barmaid though.
Jeff - 16 Nov 2003 14:30
How chuffed were we when we stumbled across this place?!

Wicked.
anonymous - 7 Nov 2003 16:54
this pub is the business. great beer, friendly staff and a good crowd. in fact, the only thing that counts against it is that the landlord supports dirty spurs.
IAIN - 17 Oct 2003 11:24
even better than the ship
Ben - 24 Sep 2003 13:28
THE finest pub in London. Enough said.
