I think most of the people on here are being really unfair. I went to this pub with everyone I used to go to college with. They were all mature students applying for medicine.
The food was really nice (and we loved their sausage baguettes with sweet onions chutney in it. The prices were always reasonable, and according to what I have read about O'Neills, the same can not be said. As for the staff, they were always friendly and chatty. We used to go in SW4 (as it was then), almost everyday, and we never had a negative experience.
Also before you say anything else, no I am not a 'chav' and neither were my friends. I think it is a shame that such a brilliant place has gone. I still think about their baguettes. :(

This pub is now closed. It's rebranding as... O'Neills. Really.

Prior to the smoking ban this place used to be populated by Clapham's oldest boozehounds but it's not given way to a younger set and office workers. It's a Wetherspoons by any other name and the service is proof of that. Over 21 policy in evenings with gorillas on the door to enforce it - why I don't know, this is the wrong end of Clapham ffs...

Ugh. Rough as. Chavland comes to Clapham. Avoid.

I've similarly been a victim of this pub's dress code for wearing track pants and so has friend. In both cases our clothes were spotlessly clean and bearing in mind others in the pub were wearing jeans and trainers this rule seemed rather pathetic. Our group had a good evening in the pub over the road

A truly awful drinking experience. Since this pub reopened it seems to have managed to attract a consistently rough crowd, mostly out of character for the surrounding pubs and bars in the area. This is promoted by a door policy that declines entry to casually dressed local people on the basis of wearing a woolly hat because it's cold, whilst opening the door to one of the many groups of scallies making a pilgrimage there for evening. If you do get past the ridiculous door and its compulsory weapons frisk (enough said) the pub has no discernible atmosphere, with generic house music and overpriced drinks - I'd rather while away an evening in the late shop next door.

im currently working for this hell hole... no fun to workk in, full of chavs wanting a cheap drink, or women who dont know SQUAT about wine.. who drink ros because its "cool", then ordering it together..(5 glasses) then paying sepearatly.. ALL WITH CREDIT CARD... when theres like a dumpload of people waiting to get served..!

Formerly a grotty dump full of old soaks. Now a refurbished dump full of young soaks and apprentice gangsters. This place is just awaiting it's first shooting.

To say this pub is huge is an understatement, after getting your pint you can actually go for a stroll around the interior and finish your beer before you get back to the bar, that is if your a quick drinker like me. Seriously though on Sat afternoons the place feels empty although all areas are clean and tidy as are the toilets.Staff were all friendly and the lager was nice and cold.Been back quite a few times over the years as I have now moved away.Mind you its a huge improvement on 15 years ago when the place was full of pool tables.I would definately recomend a beer in here.

Feels like an airport lounge. Even the toilets are big enough to play tennis in - you can hear the echo of your own splash. Ghastly.
|
Its cheep, and the food is edible, and although previous comments state otherwise, i have always found the bar staff to be ok. I must admit that at times you have to wait to be served, two staff in such a large bar does seem a little mean, but on the whole an ok place with soft chairs, and some even softer characters, if you are prepared to look deeper than the skin.
|
The only thing this pub offers is hang over food. I don't think I dare go in for a drink in the evening; It might give me flashbacks to nights in Bedford and Luton.
"Trendy" Clapham could probably do without this place, it's scummy enough as it is!

a wolf in sheep's clothing....don't be a mug and get sucked in by the makeover....this is still the goose and granite, just in disguise. actually, talking about disguises, i was so disguised in here once i was just about incognito. well moody bar staff.

I too was there last Sunday for a roast, and was told the exact same thing.
From where I was sitting I could see into the kitchen, the staff were throwing food around. I decided to go elsewhere for a meal, and on my way out the staff were all gathered round the bar drinking heavily.
I will never go back there again. Not impressed at all.
|
We went there on Sunday just past to have their Sunday roast that they do there. Having been before and enjoyed it I saw no reason not to. Having been there Sunday, I will never again. The service was absolutely disgraceful. The kitchen was closed because apparently they had "a mental lunch and would be open at 6.30". 6.30 came by and we were then told it would now be open at 7. All this despite the fact that most of the kitchen staff appeared to be having a drink at the bar! We went to Nandos instead and probably will from now on. At least we got food there.

On the whole this place has great potential. It's up-to-date, trendy, big, very clean, has a great atmosphere and it's in a very good location. I've been there twice and enjoyed it, even though we didn't get a seat. I don't go there anymore, purely because of the crowds. The Management of this place need to step in to improve things. Mainly the lack of seating and the minors - I saw several "kids" drinking in there both times I went.

I agree with Sarah, the Goose and Granite had a nice traditional feel about it. You could cosy up with a drink and relax. Now its SW4 its a pile of ****. Its full of Chavs and I wish the place would close down. The worst pub in Clapham bar the Windsor up the back which is terrible too.
|
The Goose and Granite was a lovely pub, always a seat and never too rowdy. SW4 was fun for a while but i soon got fed up of the incredibly high number of minors, they even looked about 12! Then it got better again in the summer, now i just cant be bothered to spend my precious weekends having to stand (in horrendously unflattering green lighting) and usually wait up to 40mins in order to get a drink when i could be doing something else, anything else really. (and dont even get me started on that woman they now have in the toilets, mugging you of your change for the privalledge of using a tissue!)

I think sw4 is really good it is now filled with young ppl in the evenings and there is no sign of broken glass!! The bar men are friendly and always look out for me and my friends when were in there ....it has improved so much!!!

The pub is looking ok, but the scabby patrons are the real problem. It's still shite.
Martin - 2 Mar 2004 16:10 |
Much improved by the rebrand this pub is now full of young folk in high fashion. The beer is very cheap and they do it by the jug
Chloe - 11 Feb 2004 16:47 |
Sorry, but I went past the place at the weekend and couldn't see anything different enough to make me think it was safe to go in yet. Saying that though, there wasn't the usual array of broken glass and blood on the doorstep, so maybe things HAVE improved.!

REcently refurbished, not even the flat screens and half decent bar staff could save this place! The whole place is dire, should be gutted and turned into a half decent restaurant.

I heard it used to be descriped as "like a book with no library". When G&G it felt like one of those motorway pubs outside Thurrock. As SW4 its at least cleaned the place up a bit.
Wilson - 19 Nov 2003 18:25 |
At least it had a bit of character when full of Irish "down and outs" - now it's just another faceless Clapham bar.

we visited the newly refurbished bar yesterday, we were enjoying a nice meal, commenting on how nice it looked and had a drink thrown over us by a couple arguing, all over our food, in my hair over our clothes, we left after the manager refused to through them out, we did get a refund.
Jacq & Ash - 30 Jul 2003 02:31 |
good news, the G&G has been refurbished and is now a fantastic bar called SW4....well worth a visit and they've built new toilets!!!
Andy - 15 Jul 2003 12:56 |
its closed down been renovated and is reopening as something else
anonymous - 8 Jul 2003 11:57 |
Once described to me as 'like a library with no books', the good news is this watering hole is now shut and will be reopening as Bar SW4 at some point in the near future.
This was quite possibly the most unfriendly and unwelcoming pub I have been to *ever*

Used to go to this pub a few years ago when it was ok, last 2 years it has turned into a dump full of drunken irish and down and outs
Bill - 17 Apr 2003 16:29 |
Joanna clearly caught them on a good day! The surly, unhelpful attitude of the staff could only be matched by the horror of the gent's toilets, whilst not as bas as The Surprise in Pimlico (which are genuinely worth seeing). The punters here are the moist pointless, agressive filth. Top 10 worst pub.

I did not enjoyed my visit in the G&G. Bar tender coul not hide his negative attitude towards coustomers. He forgot to bring me change, finally, as I stood at the bar waiting, he gave me incorrect amount of money. Pint of Grolsh cost me 3.05. I was too upset to quarrel and walked off. I will never come back!
