user reviews of the Bedford, Balham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Huge boozer in Balham refreshingly not kitted out with junk, distressed furniture and board games. No pan-fried pheasant here kids.

However service was indifferent and slow despite the pub being empty. Balham prices too.

terenced - 26 May 2015 08:46
Very large, interesting pub, with a nice feel to it. The clientelle was varied which also adds to a nice atmosphere. There was a few ales on, including a local London beer, which was ok, but served way too cold.
dyyony - 2 Feb 2015 09:55
went in the Good old bedford the other night
WOW what a change no longer a dirty boozer with live music
but it has been sharpened up
nice looking bar (and staff)
great range of beers and my wife loved the cocktails
had a cheeky malbec when we all ordered Dinner which was very good for the price
Need to work on theirr toilets still though
oh and great music in the thetrew for free?? how do they still do that in tehese times??
coolevenings1 - 20 Feb 2014 12:36
Went in for the first time for a long time on Friday and was pleasantly surprised. The Yellow Hammer was well kept though sadly me and my compatriots drunk them out of it and had to switch to the equally fine Doombar. The service was pretty quick for a Friday night and the bar staff were chatty and friendly. Overall a fine experience.

theoneandonlyjoe - 4 Mar 2013 14:09
My experience was a lot more positive than my predecessors - I was there for the comedy, so I was only in the pub to get drinks, but the bar staff were good, the range of drinks was decent, (the Yellow Hammer was good) and although there was a group of lads in hats loudly playing a drinking game (21) there weren't any obvious scumbags.

Foghorn1 - 3 Mar 2013 21:30
The ale was good ( a pleasant pint of Directors )
The food, fish, chips and alleged mushy peas, left a lot to be desired.
I advised a member of the bar staff that the food left a lot to be desired
and was told the Chef would speak to me shortly.
A chap in a none uniform shirt and glasses on his head
came to my table and asked ' what's up? '
I advised him that the Chef was coming to speak to me, he told me ' no '.
i pointed out the dry ' mushy ' peas and the overdone battered fish and advised him that it was not good.
He stated that the peas were not dry and did I want another pint.
I advised that I wanted it noted that the food was not good and that I did not
want a freebie!!!!!
I then left disappointed.

the_fourth_proctol_hole - 22 Feb 2012 13:14
I tell you what I have been absolutely cunted in here on several occations.

Fucking bang on back in the day.

Full of scum these days though.

A Review of 2 Halves .

A Pub that has FREE quality live music is held in VERY high esteem in my eyes. In this day and age they are becoming far too few.

The Bedford is a great music venue, intimate, outstanding sound quality and the music side of the pub runs like clock work

More than can be said about the rest of it ..

Sadly the Bedford falls flat on its face when you get to the bar to TRY and order a drink.

The staff are slow, unaware and appear disinterested, traits that the Bar Manager seems to hold dear too.

He was all too happy to slouch in the corner chatting to 2 staff members while the thirsty punters were 4 deep at the bar being ignored.

In short Go for the music .

Then go drink somewhere they care and you can get served

MUSIC 9/10

BAR 3/10

Hods100 - 24 Aug 2011 10:59
A rather depressing joint.........
GVF - 1 Mar 2011 18:20
Freezing cold room and we had to wait an hour after ordering our food for it to appear.
Not recommended.

janedent - 11 Dec 2010 17:37
Last time i was here was just over a year ago for a comedy gig and as an entertainment venue i think it's pretty good, nice and close to public transport links.

the beer was pretty good, a bit pricey for what i was used to at the time but then the pub itself is a nice place with open fires, beer (smokers) garden. on the few occasions i'd been i found it very hectic and the staff were able to cope reasonably well.
womble8t2 - 21 Apr 2010 14:44
Well after a very fine evening's entertainment from some very talented musicians, aided by some very well kept real ales, I must say I was most impressed by this rather vast public house. I only tried their HSB and Yellow Hammer, the former was perfectly kept but the latter was somewhat over-chilled, if I am to be critical, especially given that when one pays 3.50 for a pint, one would expect a dam near perfect brew. But these few shortfalls were easily made up by the high quality musical entertainment, in particular The Boyfriend Club, who were on fine form. Their best form so far in fact. So, keep an eye out for their next outing to Balham's Bedford public house: well worth a butchers. Cheers
hughbertesq - 8 Apr 2010 02:05
I am looking forward to sampling the real ales this fine extablishment has to offer. Also, there appears to be some very high quality entertainment this evening, with a thoroughly decent band called The Boyfriend Club playing. I myself, shall be in the audience, listening to the class acts and sampling some of the Devil's drink. I shall review post session. Cheers
hughbertesq - 7 Apr 2010 17:44
Visit on 14th December 2009.

Entertainment cool , but at 14.50 a head, I expect a seat you can see the stage from. The act should seek a better venue as they were class ...

Totally rubbish pub, too dark, too expensive. Ladies loo's did not lock and had no paper. Pub caters for the area, upper middle class no brainers.

One out of ten - could do better.
ROBERTA - 16 Dec 2009 13:46
Reasonable big pub near Balham station, doing Brains SA at the time of visit, has all sorts of events. Would probably be my local if I lived in the area.
rainlight - 5 Dec 2009 15:26
This is a large two room pub that hosts other events upstairs. It was the Evening Standard Pub of the Year in 2002 and the sign is still proudly displayed on the wall of the main bar. The pub itself however is nowhere near the quality that this suggests.

The main bar is large and quite airy with a lot of different types of chairs and tables scattered about and a couple of sofas in front of the fireplace. There is also outside seating for those who want it (and there were many on the Sunday I visited) although a panoramic view of Sainsbury's car park and the raised main southern railway line are probably not everyone's cup of tea. The smaller side bar always seems to be for the hardened drinkers whenever I've dropped in.

This is an ok place and the main bar is fairly nice but there are preferable places around Balham. I can't comment on the evening entertainment but that would seem to be the source of most of the attraction this pub has.
murgatroyd - 18 Oct 2009 11:37
Pretty dreadful. I didn't like it when it featured in the London Standard top10 years ago (not surprising, as choices can be laughable), and it was worse when I stopped by last week to find the main (front) bar locked, and the rear bar smelling bad (musty/sweaty?) even with no-one in it. Three of four pumps (or 2/3?) were reverse clipped. I wont be making the 2min walk from Balham stn again.
trainman - 13 Sep 2009 09:56
Good pub 7 days a week. Something different going on every night. Monkeyfunk on a Saturday night is a good laugh only mildly spoiled by some gay bloke at the back of the room using an imaginary fishing rod...........
Grayster - 16 Mar 2009 14:56
Vibrant place with a nice bar to sit at, pretty busy mid afternoon. Can imagine it's rammed on a Friday night. Pint I had was decent, one or two ales to choose from.
OldRogue - 5 Jan 2009 14:00
Great place. Grotty back bar for old men, gastro-esque front bar full of bright young things (I know it is wrong to hate them for being bright young things but...), a great venue in the round and good upstairs as well. The beer garden sucks but hey (out the front is good for people watching) and prices are London prices as opposed to what they should be (Streatham prices). The chips are the best in London (IMO) but the food is probably too expensive (Tazine over the road is good, BYO booze from the Threshers Offie). I have worked out what makes it good as well, there is probably a higher female-male ratio in here than most pubs. Very pretty boys and girls, very amiable.
mfawkner - 28 Aug 2008 17:01
Went in last night and had yet another good night. Free music in the mini-globe theatre. The only thing they asked for was that you listened to the music and turned your mobile off. For me this was great as if you wanted a conversation you could go sit in the main bar quite happily and it meant you could hear the excellent music perfectly.

Again great venue, great pub.
theoneandonlyjoe - 19 Jun 2008 13:45
This pub is much better inside than it looks and has a great atmosphere. well worth a look.
thepubman - 3 May 2008 15:02
Great pub with more rooms than you can count. I'm sure there are some tucked away somewhere that I haven't found yet.

Out of the three on the ground floor the mini-globe theatre bit offers a good stage for bands and comedy. Generally has a fairly good standard of both. The larger bar offers a place where you can comfortably chat with mates or meet new people. I don't like the food serving bit they have in there though as I don't think it looks quite right in the setting. It does show some sport (be warned at this point it will be packed and your be lucky to squeeze through the door). If I was going to watch sport here I'd go to the smaller bar with it's entrance round the corner from the main one (do not call this 'the old mans bar' within earshot of the regulars there as you probably get a slightly grumpy look and a hmmmpphhh). It's also good if you want a quiet chat as the noise and music played in the main bar is well contained in there. The down side of sitting in there is that service can be quite slow as the staff can't see in from the other side and do not dedicate a member of staff for that side so they may get bored and drift round to the main bar. Also the toilets (even as a bloke) do leave quite a bit to be desired or offer more than desired depending on the way you look at it.

The staff can be a little variable as well have known great really friendly staff who work efficiently and efectively and among the best you'll find in Balham. Also have had someone who forgot my drinks order twice despite me only ordering one drink and some crisps.

The beer again can be a bit variable. I've had some good pints and some bad ones. I've only had the food once and it was pretty good standard pub food bit overpriced but I seem to feel that way about all pub food in Balham so who knows.

As previous comments have stated it is pretty much full of younger new Balhamites moving down from the spread of Clapham but I find the seperation of rooms offers a space and atmosphere for everyone.
theoneandonlyjoe - 9 Apr 2008 13:31
The Bedford is without doubt one of the best pubs in Balham in terms of atmosphere and a good night out. However, general cleanliness is poor and in particular the quality of drinks is dismal. You are almost guaranteed a dirty glasses and being served a a flat lager is fairly commonplace. Last time I went with mates to watch the rugby our pints were full of "bits". Sort it out!
Balhamas_Paradise - 12 Mar 2008 12:37
My first impression was that this souless barn of a place was a failed Wetherspoon's. However, it seemed busy with the bright young things of Balham, munching burgers and apparently having an AMAZING time! I left them to it
redrocket - 28 Feb 2008 12:41
I was here on Saturday night. Nice pint of guinness but having to wait 20 minutes or so to get served is ridiclous.

I was in the small bar early on in the evening and 80% of the time there were no barstaff behind the bar. Not impressed with this place at all. The larger bar was packed later on and it was nigh on impossible to get a drink.
almcdo - 4 Feb 2008 09:02
You can agree and disagree with most of the reviewers comments, enter into the first bar and yes it does need a bit of a paint job and is pretty non descript. But venture further in to the concert room for the live acoustic and FREE! music and you are in for a real treat.

I've give them an 8 as the quality of the acts they have come through really is top notch.
Teskea - 30 Jan 2008 18:49
I really like this pub as its a chilled place to be and it's not pretentious - however could do with a paint job inside. Comedy nights are brilliant.
EllyE - 11 Dec 2007 14:34
Great comedy, never enough staff, far too difficult to get served. Food is average at best, whoever runs this please put some more staff on
anonymous - 31 Oct 2007 20:02

Great one-stop night-out-in-Balham as it has the separate concert room (free) where new bands try out especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays after - I think - about 9pm. Watch out for the talent scouts or do what I do, stand at the back looking interested in the band and wait for their "manager" to approach you!
asnootyfox - 25 Aug 2007 08:27
This is a cracking pub and still the best night out in Balham. Luckily its my local. Food is always good, staff are friendly, good looking punters, prices are okay, music to lift your soul and the best comedy in
London.

They gave us a beer garden this year as well and now there's a DJ in the main bar on friday.

Does what it says on the tin. Nuff said. Go there!

If the management read this - nice sunday lunch but what about something for us Sunday night - not everyone works on Monday!
Jay100 - 21 Jul 2007 11:23
Went to this place on the night of the cricket world cup final It was just to crowded for my liking so we had to sit outside with sulky door staff. Also lacked soul and atmos. Reminded me of a southend family theme pub.
TheWizard - 21 May 2007 14:25
Used to live just round the corner from here, but The Bedford was never quite good enough to make it my regular. The ales aren't kept that well, service can be slow - and Friday and Saturdays are worth avoiding unless your going for the comedy.

Comedy: the performances are normally great, but you have to go through the enormous hassle of queuing to enter at 7ish, desperately trying to secure a table/seats suitable for your party and then waiting for the performances to start at 9ish, during which time of course they rake in the money as you've nothing better to do than drink and eat their school-dinner type food.
bristolbeerboy - 2 Apr 2007 14:25
Good comedy nights.
seasiderMM - 4 Mar 2007 17:15
Horrific.

I went in on Saturday night and it was over-crowded, noisy, smoky and generally unpleasant. The ale was pretty dull and served in plastic containers although the 2.50 price tag was a sliver of hope. The place is grotty, the toilets were revolting and the patrons left a lot to be desired. Overall, very poor and one of the worst pub experiences in recent memory.
AleKing - 26 Feb 2007 09:42
Great comedy nights here - Banana Cabaret is a legend and the long-running Tuesday open mic night is of high quality too.
edwardx - 20 Feb 2007 12:02
Can assure people that this is now a cockroach free place - apart from the occasional idiots on a weekend who try and impress their mates by shouting at the top of their voices. You're the only ones who think it's cool/funny.

psychonaut - 8 Dec 2006 19:07
I like it but the beer was poor last night
mitomighty - 14 Sep 2006 13:13
Still a good pub, the daddy of Balham pubs. The best for sport, the best music, funky soul upstairs (why not in the main room ????) on friday nights, the best quiz, dance classes for the grannies, jazz, and it just keeps improving. Quality - I can only think the other people posting are real-ale middle-aged bores.
anonymous - 12 Jun 2006 16:04
The main bar is full of 20's and 30's trendies trying to be cool but the smaller bar round the side is far more 'real'. Friendlier and one for the locals. Not as smokey or noisy and no problem getting served unlike the bigger bar. Not a bad pub, not a favourite though.

Handy for the station.
FuzzyKipper - 4 Jun 2006 21:15
Probably the most over-rated pub in Balham. It bleats on about winning pub of the year, or something, but the food is over-priced, the beer is not very well kept and it is always rammed with twenty and thirty-somethings trying to be "cool".
anonymous - 2 Jun 2006 13:14
Used to be a grotty pub that was always empty apart from a Fri and Sat when the comedy was on. Of a weekday evening you'd often find only the smallest handful of people in here.

Now it's completely different, but it's still completely rubbish. The service is appalling, the clientele are even worse, the comedy is now 14 (fourteen quid for a night of mediocre comedy?? In Balham???) and when I go there (which is very rarely now) I leave feeling disappointed all over again, and seriously ripped off. I really ought to stop going then. I think I will.

I'm not sure the 'Evening Standard Pub of the Year (2002?)' means an awful lot. If I remember correctly, the pub had barely had its makeover from sticky-carpeted-old-p*sshead haunt to 'modern superpub' before winning that. Despite its undoubtedly impressive array of events/functions/activities, I seriously doubt whether anyone could have called it the 'best pub in London' with a straight face. What has happened to it since then has further reinforced my point of view.

Cr*p.
im_johnny_cash - 22 Mar 2006 13:37
Something happening every night of the week. Comedy club (Banana Cabaret) is definitley worth a visit on Friday or Saturday night and live music several nights a week.

If you you're just coming for a drink and some food then avoid Friday and Saturday nights as it is far too busy.
anonymous - 22 Feb 2006 13:26
Good fun - if you can get to the bar!
oldelondonmerchant - 12 Feb 2006 21:06
Some of the staff could do with some manners and a bit of customer service training. I don't expect to be served a Guinness that's been sitting for 30 minutes. I don't expect to be argued with for refusing it. And I don't expect to be sworn at. Oh, and watch out for the hidden increase in the price of a pint after 11pm on Friday and Saturday. I thought drinks prices had to be advertised clearly.
psychonaut - 16 Jan 2006 00:55
I have actually been putting off reviwing the Bedford for some time now. Sometimes, it has an excellent atmosphere and one can have a very nice evening, with a well-kept pint of ale. However sometimes it is packed to the rafter with obnoxious yuppie types, many of whom I assume have come from far afield, due to the pubs reputation. As a result it also becomes virtually impossible to order a drink, and it appears that many of the young bar workers are inexperienced at working when the bar is busy. Overall though worth checking out if you're in the area, and it is an all right local all things considered.
anonymous - 16 Dec 2005 17:28
It's all right.
mitomighty - 7 Dec 2005 15:30
Sadly, I would have to agree with the comments below. Although the venue is great the bar staff are generally rude and unhelpful.

Benn - 31 Oct 2005 16:18
This can be a great pub, the comedy night on a Saturday is normally worth the 14 to get in. Its a shame that all the comments say the same thing, you can't get bloody served for love nor money. My advice is take your own booze!!!!
anonymous - 26 Oct 2005 15:51
Possible the most arogant, rude and incompetent bar staff I have ever come across. Really got carried away with themselves since it won the evening standard award. Coupled with the fact that it is filthy pub with some real issues. Wouldn't go back, especially when you have so many other good bars in balham.
anonymous - 14 Oct 2005 14:47
Probably my favourite ever "traditional" pub. Live music is loud enough to hear, but quiet enough to ignore if you want. Beer is good, but the food is outstanding. Friendly staff + there's no card minimum to pay here either - what a pub!
lwk198 - 25 Sep 2005 22:08
Best pub in South London? I think not. Regardless of what day it is it always takes an age to get served in here. It used to be a weird old mans pub until it had the Clapham make over complete with giant bear dogs, granted - this was an improvement however it then decided to disappear up it's own arse.
Plenty of entertainment to soak up your boredom of a night but avoid if a popular footy game is on as you won't be able to get close enough to sniff the beer - that's if you can actually get in the door.
Reasonable mix of people but a shed load who are trying a bit too hard.
Seb - 16 Sep 2005 19:14
So I'm not the only one! Yes, a real shame about the surly Yank barman. His attitude is somewhat out of place with the atmosphere created by the other excellent staff, the events, the music, the beer and overall ambience of the place.
try - 18 Aug 2005 15:03
This is my local pub, and it's fantastic - a real 'pillar of the community' boozer... There seems to be something going on every night of the week, the beer's always good and a convivial atmosphere usually prevails.

The only downside is this stony-faced yank barman who is sometimes there - he always looks at me like I'm something the cat vomitted onto the floor. I'm not sure what his problem is - but at least it's nothing personal - cos he seems to adopt a similarly hostile manner to everyone else too!

The rest of the staff are great - friendly and professional.
che_ze_one - 18 Aug 2005 13:21
Been once but liked it a lot. Its a clapham style place with the usual young pros and pretty girls. Comedy night and disco offers that bit more to make it a great pub. Also if you live in streatham its an easy walk for a good night out. Missed out on tickets to disco as people tend to stay in there after the comedy night, they're both in a seperate room to the pub.
mulletintheevening - 12 Apr 2005 16:40
well, they've now got air-con which makes a huge difference. i think it's the best boozer in London. Where else offers such a great space, 3 floors of great stuff, live music (of a very high standard) every night of the week, dance classes, great food, and the best little funk night in London. Yeah the music in the theatre on the Monkeyfunk night's is shite, but the DJ's in the ballroom play great soul, funk and hiphop. Wouldn't miss it.
anonymous - 20 Mar 2005 23:44
When I lived in London this was my local and the very essence of my time in the city. there was always a friendly bunch of staff that changed from time to time, but always great people who became my friends. The pub always had different events going on, so whether you fancied dancing, good music or watching a match, it never disappointed. One problem was the lack of air conditioning in the disco, but it didnt stop us going almost every weekend!

Good, all round pub. People who complain about service being slow on a Sunday should remember that it's one of the busiest days in here. I can recommend the saloon bar entertainment on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Also, gets very busy on Friday and Saturday around 6pm due to people forming a queue for tickets (annoyingly these people block the main doors!). The Monkeyfunk clubnight is nothing special, the music is dreadful. Occasionally a celeb will drop in. Had the pleasure of talking to Charlotte Church at the bar just before Christmas.
psychonaut - 23 Jan 2005 21:12
Monkeyfunk club night is the business.
nikki - 12 Nov 2004 12:26
Every time weve been we have had a great time!! Comedy is ace, you get a couple of hours of it then can strutt your funky stuff in the (cheesy but fun) club afterwards. Always good to meet some nice ladies :) Is over crowded and a pain to queue to get tickets, but hey, small price to pay for a top night out!!
Neil - 30 Oct 2004 16:31
Visited the pub on Sunday, and waited an hour to order food, and a further half hour for it to arrive. The pianist was lovely, the atmosphere enjoyable, but the service was shocking and the food was not worth the wait.
Sam - 4 Oct 2004 22:35
my new local. a lot going on during the week. dance classes etc. it's gonna be good i can tell. although i did get short-changed last night and didn't realise till it was too late. so watch your change. good atmosphere and i love the piano duo. might have to grab a partner for the hot and spicy dancing upstairs. yet to see comedy club but looking forward to it.
rich - 15 Sep 2004 09:24
The club isn't just for the people at the comedy - it's for people who want a late night drink and boogie...if you go to the comedy, you get in free to the club afterwards, not paying the usual door charge of 5. Win-win situation, I'd say.
Sarah - 8 Sep 2004 10:39
The disco after the cabaret is a fairly recent innovation, ie last six or seven years. Before that, one had the choice of not having to fork out fifteen quid to watch comedy without the obligatory 'pseudo-club' afterward. But sod that, get what you can out of the punter...
Gram - 6 Sep 2004 16:41
Eh ?? The Banana Cabaret always had a disco after it, well it did when I first went 10 years ago. Love the monkeyfunk club night - old hiphop, funk, disco & boogie, great atmosphere. Worth going to even without the comedy. Still the best pub in South London.
Red - 25 Aug 2004 18:02
Rubbish service, bit run down, generally unfriendly esatblishment. Better can be got in Balham than this.
John - 29 Jul 2004 12:03
The Banana was a great comedy night until they put a crappy disco on afterwards. The pub obviously wants to make loads of money but it ruined the best comedy club in London bar none.
Mark - 22 Jul 2004 12:39
What is all the fuss about! Crap service, poor standards full of arrogant aussies and kiwi's
anonymous - 17 Jul 2004 15:30
Correction - The cheesy lame club operates in the theatre - mindless shite. club in the ballroom upstairs plays ace funk and hiphop.

It's a proper boozer, great atmosphere. If they're only charging a fiver to get in, I don't pind maying 2.85 for a pint after normal operating hours.
Jonesy - 10 Jun 2004 16:57
Cracking night out. i'd recommend this highly, although i would limit it to infrequent visits to keep it interesting.
Scotty boy - 28 Apr 2004 13:15
what a great place the bedford is, london is expensive and i dont think the bedford is any different from other pubs/ clubs. Staff are accomodating and quick, every night there is something exciting on and all under one roof.
kate - 26 Apr 2004 16:05
Good pub, shame about the terrible 'I'm now hilarious because I've been to see some lame observational comedy pointing out very basic truths about modern life' brigade you see staggering out of there after the cabaret, convinced that paying money to see comedy somehow makes them witty by association. I think the burgers are quite nice.
peter - 8 Apr 2004 16:53
Great pub ! Entertainment on most nights, banana cabaret comedy club attached to it, big screen tv for sports events, good atmosphere and excellent food.

Can get a bit overcrowded though.
Frank - 2 Apr 2004 15:09
Errm, isn't that the same as saying 'it's overpriced'? Just a thought.

The Bedford's still an okay pub, but it's an occasional visit rather than regular.
Callie - 26 Mar 2004 15:39
Please ignore the comments about over pricing. If you think the food is expensive, eat somewhere else. The beer is good, the atmosphere is great. If you are the kind of person who sits and works out what they must take on a Friday night you won't enjoy it.
Richard - 24 Mar 2004 10:52
Often too busy on a friday or saturday. That said the food is good (not cheap though), and there's a always a good atmosphere in there. Excellent place for a lazy sunday (get there early to bag a table though...)
Mark - 23 Mar 2004 18:13
Went to this pub on Saturday night and had an awful time. Was far too expensive and over-crowded. Getting to the toilet was an unwelcome mission. No atmosphere.

Paid a fiver and went to the club upstairs after. Was gobsmacked to see how huge this place really is. Club seemed bit lame but ok if you dress like a Blind Date contestant.

Avoid.
Steve - 22 Mar 2004 09:45
This place looks like it should be nice, until you go there. The service is appalling for the incredibly overpriced food, don't expect your order to be taken in under twenty minutes. The pub quiz is like an exam, and its got a bit of a reputation for getting your bag stolen. I speak from experience. Other than that, if having a magician come and pester you whilst you're trying to eat on a sunday lunchtime, is your cup of tea, then you'll love it.

superb place..I don't mind paying a bit extra when it's all under one roof, three floors, 4 bars, room after room of decent unpretentious people. Food is good pub grub, DJ's in the ballroom are outstandingly funky, and door staff have had a make-over. go go go.

this place is a gold mine. it over charges for everything. i worked out they must be taking 30k on a friday night alone! not surprising when you charge 6.95 for the worst burger ever. 4.95 for cauliflower chees and 14 entrance on a sat night to the comedy. get the prices down for god's sake!

This used to be a nice friendly pub when the Gallaghers owned it. Sure it was a bit tatty, but the beer was good and the staff were friendly. Since the current owners took over it's become far too full of itself. The beer is overpriced, the food is rubbish, it's usually full of dickheads and the barstaff are surly. It's my nearest pub and used to be a great local, but I'd never go there now.

Seems to have turned in the mini Melbourne of SW London. If you can handle that, erm... well more fool you.

This is my local. Staff are ok. There's a nice mix of local and not so local people here. Uli Jon Roth has become something of a regular at the Jam Session evening. Can get very busy from 6pm onwards on Friday and Saturday (mainly people queuing for comedy tickets). Door staff are ok, but 2 or 3 are a bit short tempered and believe themselves to be G.G. to women. I tried to be nice to one of them and he turned a bit scary.

Crap pub, no idea how they won Pub of the year last year. Food took ages to come, then when it did come, was nothing to write home about. If you are looking for a nice Sunday lunch, then The Ship in Wandsworth is the best around in South London.

I got punched for no reason whatsoever and staff through ME out- keep away from this place!

voted this years 'Evening Standard' pub of the year, and truly deserved. Great for watching the footy, fab sunday roast and just a variety of entertainment. Good mix of people.

i went to the Bedford for the first time and loved the variety of things going on. i also stumbled across an excellent acoustic band called Wonderlust(?), does anyone know who they are?
Janet - 30 Apr 2003 13:25
I think that it is unfair to say that it is full of poseurs, I've never been to a pub with such a great mix of people who are just interested in having a good time, not the clothes you are wearing!

top boozer...not at all full of "ra's", complete mix of everyone up for nothing more than having a great night, be it tuesday or saturday. Don't miss the Friday nights either...outstanding Monkeyfunk in the ballroom upstairs playing killer funk, disco and boogaloo. when we went there were women dancing on tables - always a pleasant sight !
Billy - 10 Mar 2003 12:12
I loved the Sunday Roast, but my boyfriend refuses to return, as the "portions are too small" and it's full of "Ra's". True.

Went there for the first time on Sunday for dinner. We were the first in there but the place soon filled up and we were entertained by an excellent pianist as we ate. We all had roasts which were quite expensive but we were given the full works; roast potatoes, Yorkshire pud, gravy, veg etc and lots of meat!
After the meal a magician came over to our table and impressed us with his tricks - we all left with magic wands!

Bit of a poseurs pub. Good beer but service leaves a lot to be desired.

Used to be a good pub when it was less popular. Since it's been taken of and refurbished it's full of dickheads most of the time. Best avoided.
