please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

On a recent hygiene inspection by the food standards agency, this pub was awarded just 1 star out of 5 which means it is inadvisable to eat there or drink for that matter.

In again over New Year. 4 well kept real ales on, fire roaring. Good experience.

This was the best pub from our weekend visit to North Somerset. This is a delightful small village with an equally delightful pub. The interior was that of a typical country pub, with the slightly unusual feature of a thatched bar. The clientele all seemed to know one another. So presumably they were all locals. Beers on were Yeovil Summerset, St Austell Proper Job, Quantock Ale & Otter Bitter. There's a good selection of local keg ciders. I think it was the first time I've tried Copper Press cider. Lovely little pub. 7/10 from me. Could be improved with a real cider. But if the locals don't drink it, I suppose they've got no need to stock it.

Went today, landlord was welcoming, the beer was well kept and the food more than filling.
For the past couple of days I have been hankering for a a steak and kidney pud with lots of gravy and chips. There it was on the menu, and it was all I had hoped for!
Dogs allowed on raised portion of bar area at far end.

As has been mentioned a lovely village, don't miss the church opposite, as is usual.

apologies to all connected with this pub ( that I have never been in )
ref: last review.
It was intended for the nearby Notley Arms at Monksilver.
I got in a bit of a pickle when slightly pickled. Sorry.
I did contact B.I.T.E and asked them to remove it but they hav"nt.

is it just me or are a lot of country pubs in Somerset and Devon
loosing their local identity ?
This pub is more suited to South Kensington or Chelsea.
I half expected to see Joanne Lumley and her ad fab pals propping up the bar.
Not a somerset accent to be heard.
The girl behind the bar was pleasant enough but the place was antisceptic
and lacked atmosphere.
I dont suppose anyone in this village was actually born in the area.
Worrying social changed that don"t bode well.

After a revisit I felt I should update my previous review.........

Significant improvement on the beer front. We had 3 of the 4 ales on offer and each were well kept. Bar chap was attentive.

They could still do with getting shot of the stools by the bar though!!!

This beautiful Inn has been taken over by a lovely couple who are proper publicans, the local beers are fantastic and they have a good selection of local ciders too. The food is excellent and sourced locally whenever possible, tasty dishes are on the menu, lovely homely roasts on Sundays, and scrummy home made puddings. The restaurant gets very busy so ensure you book. The While Horse has letting rooms which have been updated to a excellent standard and you can have the best full english breakfast ever! The locals are lovely and the staff at The White Horse are very helpful and friendly too. Stogumber is a stunning village well worth the visit.

Walked here one lunch time from the railway at Stogumber. We had the 'Orse beer which was moreish - a St. Austell brew for the pub? This was accompanied by a large baguette overflowing with the most beautiful local ham, with mustard. Excellent. The old boy behind the bar was welcoming and we were included in the bar banter with the locals. Worth the effort up the hill! We have never taken dogs or our children to pubs as there is always the potential to upset other users, which is unfair in what is essentially an adult environment.

This pub never seems to be vry busy and it's easy to figure out why, The service really needs polishing up, and something needs to be done about the rather charmless reception that greets the unknown visitor.
The beers are never that well looked after and the food somewhat disappointing.
Glad it's not my local.

This village deserves better than this hang out for racist, sexist, drink drivers. Service slow and hampered by those who feel the bar is their patch. The barman seems to feel that "Can I get you a drink whilst you are waiting?" makes up for the lack of ungency.

Average beer not worth detouring for.

A friendly reception in a competently run pub with a selection of cask ales from west country brewers and a good if shortish menu - we were informed the previous chef had left some time ago, and an ambitious menu has become more manageable, and none the worse for that in my opinion
My ham and mushroom pancake starter was delicious and the following game pie was substantial and very tasty; my wife's stilton & spinach quiche was approved. Pudding was home-made apple and red fruit crumble.
Beer from the Cotleigh Brewery was drinkable but not quite in perfect condition.
All in all, a pleasant pub, trying hard, and providing a good service.

Cheers,

Have only been here once but found it to be a lovely little village pub. Good ales and a relaxed atmosphere, will be going back soon to try the food as some of the plates coming out looked good value. As previously said parking is a bit difficult.

Local village pub with two or three draught beers. Not particularily friendly, especially if you have a dog. Food average. open all day. Difficult parking.

Seems cozy and friendly enough and I enjoyed the beer. I haven't tried the food.

Can't fault the beer but the food was not up to scratch and very overpriced for what it was (ie cheap cuts of meat and small sides). It's a shame because the beer is good and the village is quaint but we won't be going back for seconds. The manager didn't seem bothered by our complaints - I doubt they'll make it to the chef - but did take a bit of money off the bill.

The landlord of this pub was very nasty to my child who is five years old, DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB if you have children

A truly traditional village local with accommodation, log fires, cask-marque accredited real ales, local landlord and staff, and local chef producing local food; just the best in the area.
