user reviews of the Kings Fairway, Ashford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

During the lull between Christmas and New Year, made the mistake of visiting this establishment in the early evening. It claims to be a CAMRA affiliated pub, which I can't actually believe as the service is so absolutely attratrocious.

After a 40 minute wait for food, served at a tepid temperature, it was bland, dull and uninspiring.

avoid this expensive sh*t hole at all costs.

Ember Inns pub that was not too inspiring. Ales were Sharps Doom Bar, Fullers London Pride, Windsor & Eton Knight of the Garter, Greene King XX Mild & Everards Tiger were the ales. The Mild was good. The pub has a large interior and a paved area outside. It was quite busy on our Thursday evening visit.

Visted this pub for a meal this evening for the first time for a couple of years - it used to be good for food.
We found it to be expensive for the standard of meal and the service to be poor. The table wasn't wiped for us before serving the food - beer stains from the previous occupants, and we waited some 45 minutes after the main course was finished before anyone passed by to clear, and notice the pre-ordered desert could be served.

The food was totally un-inspiring and we and we won't be eating here again.

If you pop into the K/Fairway on a sunday evening now, you can apparently get ANY bottle of wine in stock for £8.00 !!
Now that might be worth doing, especially if they've got some 'Cloudy Bay' handy...!! :o)
(Gotta get the punters in somehow...!) TJ

Revisited this pub again after my last comments in early November. The bar staff were not friendly at all, slow, no welcome and service without a word. Also it was cash only again for drinks and meals. I had no trouble with the actual drinks but I overheard one couple moaning about the service and the taste of their drinks. I don't believe they complained to the bar staff but commented on the presentation of our meals and left to get a chinese. Our food was not great just what you would expect for very basic pub grub, the waiter had to apologise for my wife's chicken being cut open but the chef wanted to check that the meat was cooked. Surely a professional chef/cook should be able to tell when meat is cooked. The gents toilet had a large amount of water on the floor around the sinks (same on last visit). This pub needs to improve its service and image.

Previous meals at this pub have been very good but yesterday was a let down. We ordered two meals: Beef Lasagne & 10oz Gammon. The lasagne was half the size of previous ones and only had one piece of garlic bread instead of the usual two, partly burnt - dry and lasagne rubbery in parts. The gammon was more like two thick rashers than a steak - dry, salty and looked like it had been cooked on a dirty b-b-q leaving black marks on the meat, no peas or grilled tomato and eggs overcooked. There was no guest satisfaction survey certificate provided so presume the owners did not want feedback. This may have been a 'one-off' but if it happens again then I would not return again.

Nice pub, shame about the staff they let the place down.

Called in on Tuesday 28th in the late afternoon, made the fatal mistake of ordering a pint of Fosters instead of the five or six guest beers. Probably the worst pint of Fosters ever, and believe me, I've drunk a few. After being ignored by the bar staff in the quest to query why it was such a bad pint I opted for a pint of "Otter" which was delicious. It turns out that the reason for the poor service, is there is a relief manager here now. So , for the forseeable future, it's back to the Ash Tree.........

Great pub! quiz night a blast look out for cheeky chappy Gordon on the mic :-) questions not too ridiculously hard but prizes arnt fab really...just for fun though its worth a laugh! friendly staff although some seem to have that Ashford attitude not all though and most are very pleasent and friendly!!! also curry nights good too on a Thursday!!
smileyloz - 25 Sep 2008 13:33
Is an ok pub but not a friendly welcome. The food was greasy and chips undercooked. They need to get their act together a bit more
1crazygran2b - 31 Jul 2008 23:27
Best pub in Ashford but that isn't saying a great deal. Good choice of drinks and generally friendly staff. Always looks clean which in Ashford is not a given. Quiz is very good.
LondonBoy29 - 21 May 2008 13:56
Best pub in Ashford. Beer well kept, prompt service from friendly staff. Kings Head could learn a lot about it, especially the cleanliness.
Bluenosemally - 18 Apr 2008 11:19
Quiz night at 'Kings Fairway' is at 9.00pm on Wednesdays, when 'Becks V' is on special offer at 1.99 a pint!! (And I think they have quizes some Sundays too). Still the best pub in Ashford. Well done staff! Had some "Rosey Nosey" here the other day, aswell as another 'seasonal' ale (Santa obviously brought too much..!) The London Pride was good. Their lager selection is not big at the moment, Becks Vier, Stella, and Fosters (or is it Carling..) are the main ones, or bottled 'Peroni', but thats exxy!! 7/10 TJ

Quinno's point about the ABVs is spot on, which is a shame if you are counting your units. Better to have at least one lower strength beer. Still as it was my first visit, have to say I enjoyed the atmosphere, the beer (Kelham Island Easy Rider at 2.57) and the fact that at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon the place was busy and buzzing.
dougscott - 18 Nov 2007 15:04
Lunchtime today - good, fast service with a smile,
good food too. Six real ales and a lovely lady to lunch with - what more could you ask for!!! A great pub.
wal - 16 May 2007 17:21
Busy, friendly atmosphere, good range of well kept ales, good value food, good service. Great pub!
riverboy - 16 Mar 2007 20:45
best pub in ashford by far . great bar staff and managers. also good crowd drink in here , no atmosphere. keep away fronm the round table by the entrance as its mine!

A classic Linda (formerly of the Crown in Egham and the Sovreigns in Woking) production...well done girl, a good job unfolding here.

Six beers on the go Monday, (including three guests) served in a busy and vibrant atmosphere. Interior and toilets clean as a whistle. Refurb is obviously new, but is fairly well done I think.

Rumour has it that Linda doesn't order any guest beers under 4.5% abv, so there's always going to be some interesting choices available!

Best in Ashford by far, and now pulling up with the best in North Surrey - well recommended. I look forward to my next visit...
Quinno - 8 Feb 2007 21:12
Used the 'KF' a lot since Christmas, I must like it!! The artwork in the pub is worth seeing, its...unusual! How often can you have a beer overlooked by a life-size Mrs Buddha..? Ok your locals got one... but I wasn't actually referring to staff..!! The rump steak is good, and 'Laid back Ron' likes the scampi. London Pride, Bombadier, Santa's Little Helper (still), Carling, Fosters, Grolsch, Kronenbourg, Guiness, mulled wine & a few others on tap. Lunchtimes you will guarantee a seat, but Friday/Sat nights you'll probably have to stand, its that popular. As i keep tellin'ya, its the best pub in Ashford!! TJ
TeeJay - 10 Jan 2007 20:59
Used it for the first time recently , choice of six reals ales and reasonabe food.Shame about all the able bodied idiots parking in the disabled spaces when the car park is so large.
FlatTwin - 10 Jan 2007 10:25
You can get a reasonable lunch in the 'Kings Fairway' for under 5. They have a larger than average 'no smoking' area (half the pub) so you don't have to go home smelling too smokey. Largish car park at rear. 290 bus stop 150yds away. And topless darts on a Thursday.
TeeJay - 11 Dec 2006 21:47
My wife and I returned here for lunch which was served quickly and politely by one of the girls behind the bar. Noce pint of Youngs too. Real Ale festival commences on 12th October for six weeks.
Will be back for sure.
wal - 4 Oct 2006 15:14
all the royal hart lot in here as per normal, you must be male, overweight and have a checked jumper. Not one to spend the evening in even though it is 'local'.

KINGS FAIRWAY -
Best pub in Ashford by a long way!!
Check it out next time you're down Ashford way. TJ
TeeJay - 21 Aug 2006 15:54
They cant extend the seating area because of the git who lives next door. He doesnt want the patrons of the pub sitting too near his house...even though he spends half his time down there! Planning permission has failed everytime they have applied.
One small criticism of the pub, it would be nice to see the landlord and assistant manager doing something now and again apart from hiding out the back and then appearing at half ten to have a drink.
AshfordBee - 11 Aug 2006 08:32
N.B. for Management:-
Would it be possible at some stage to extend the seating area outside, in this hot weather there never seem to be enough seats outside. (Perhaps removing that 18" wall would be sufficient, it doesn't seem to serve a purpose, just confining the area for patrons).
Excellent job inside the pub though! First rate! TJ
TeeJay - 10 Aug 2006 12:28
Thanks 4 showing my pics of the 'new' building! They were only taken on my mobile as I was on my way...

robhealy - 9 Aug 2006 18:01
I popped in this afternoon for a pint... very nicely decorated - they've rebuilt bit by bit using the plans from the original (refurbed) building - but it obviously feels 'new'! Beer in good form too - albeit a bit pricey although you can't have it all!

Noticed the 'coconut matting' outside - methinks it needs just a tad of watering and it may well bed in... if not, there's a bit of spare astroturf knocking around at Feltham Arena these days - (the petrol station at Bedfont Green has been using it too for about 20 years!)
robhealy - 30 Jul 2006 16:52
Can I just say what an excellent job they've done on the Kings Fairway re-furb! Tasteful furnishings, comfortable bar chairs, and that v.long comfy sofa is brilliant if you're in a group.
Wifey luvs all the curtains, and the different chair styles and materials, and the trendy art-work dotted around the place. A real 'oasis' in Ashford town!
The beer selection's not too bad either!
Well done to all the staff at 'KF', making a trip to this pub well worth your while.
(PS: we love the coconut matting area outside!)

TeeJay - 26 Jul 2006 11:49
A notice states the pub opens at 6pm today (having been out of service since Easter Monday, because of a serious kitchen fire!!) Can't w8..! Its been firsty wevver of L8..! This has got 2b by far the best hostelry in Ashford, check-it-out! What the blazes is this I hear..they do a nice bar-b-q here..? and have real fires on colder evenings. Perhaps thats why its an Ember Inn..! Did the manager get fired after that little incident..? Still, can't w8 for 'Burns Night' this year, hey!? Should b good... well I'm done..!A bit like the steak..! TJ
TeeJay - 24 Jul 2006 14:43
According to Royston the landlord it is due to reopen on July 24th
AshfordBee - 7 Jul 2006 10:07
I went past the site yesterday (24/06) and saw that it now has walls and a roof - which is an improvememt!
robhealy - 25 Jun 2006 12:52
Due to reopen early July...cant wait! Lovely pub, nice staff and good beer and grub. Unbeatable in the local area
AshfordBee - 10 May 2006 00:54
A friend of mine spoke to the landlord (Royston) the other day... apparently it was a really bad kitchen fire. They hope to reopen soon, but from what I saw of what's left of the pub (not a lot) I'm not so sure.
Maybe the place is jinxed - the original Links Hotel on the site burned down in the 70's/80's...
robhealy - 6 May 2006 08:37
sorry i typo'ed on the date it was the 17/4/06

This Pub was a lovely pub, was very nicely decorated with a very friendly atmosphere, quiet yet a family pub. However I say was, tonight I witness an unfortunate event, at 21:15approx 7/4/2005 the Kings Fairway was on ablaze, I saw 4 fire engines and 2 police units on scene there could have been more, the police are not treating this incident as suspicious I was told by an officer on scene. From what I could see the whole pub has been damaged and destroyed, it would appear the fire spread through the whole building. My thoughts and prayers go to the Landlord/lady and those who work at the Kings Fairway at this difficult time. Its a sad event as it is not only a business but its a livelihood and hobby.

I hope to see you open again soon

Sam

Hi, this pub is in a useful spot if you are wishing to break a journey for a drink and a meal between the M3 and the M25 - off the M3 at Sunbury. The food is cooked to order, there are daily specials - which are special - and they are honest too! (Left my brand new mobile on the table and they kept hold of it and I got it back!)
lindaful - 11 Feb 2006 14:47
My wife and I visited the Kings Fairway last week after an absence of two years ( because we didn't like the indifferent service). What a pleasant transformation!!! The new decor is excellent and the bar staff friendly and helpful. We had a steak and chip lunch which was most enjoyable and the Youngs bitter was a delight. One minor complaint was the
noisy extractor fan in the no smoking area nevertheless we will go back soon.
wal - 13 Oct 2005 14:27
nicely refurbished but still has the same f..king miserable faces behind the bar..
anonymous - 28 Jul 2005 21:47
Better than the King's Head but then, what isn't? (Apart from the burning-fag-butt-smelling Oaks of course). Very friendly bar staff and bloody good chips. Incredibly overpriced food but beer prices are normal. Probably the nicest pub in Ashford. Go here and this will say as much about Ashford as the unsuspecting visitor will need to know. Get back on the M25 and out of here - pronto!
Cleversaz - 15 May 2005 00:43
Agree with the other previous comments. Has guest real ales but served through a swan neck dispenser, shame. Staff friendly. Has sporadic beer festivals.
Simon - 25 Sep 2004 15:52
Very nice food with good choice on menu. Nice friendly atmosphere. Never crowded so good to start at for a couple of warm up beers.
Blues - 16 Sep 2003 16:22
Local pub with good wine and beer . Nice atmosphere for a quiet drink and read of the paper after work.
