Hugely eccentric and historic gas lit Samuel Smith's pub. A pub interior of national significance, with a baffling warren of rooms, that is not to be missed. The Old Brewery Bitter is fairly standard but with an orangey woody note from the traditional wooden casks.

After the Dog & Duck (not listed on here, although its picture is!), I moved onto the highlight of my Beverley trip. The White Horse is a Sam Smiths pub. So you know what you're getting in terms of the beer. Old Brewery Bitter is on handpull. But it's the fabulous historic interior, lit entirely with gaslamps that it the real draw. It truly is like stepping back in time. There are lots of small rooms, with tables aplenty. I had a room to myself on a Saturday evening. Drinks were a little pricy though, especially soft drinks. Don't come here expecting good beer. But do come to marvel at the inside.
OBB still £1.80. Great atmospheric pub still lit by gas and candles. Endless warren of dark and welcoming rooms. I will not repeat what others have said. Just visit and see for yourself.
A great place to visit. Like stepping back 50 years. OBB excellent value. New toilets and pool room don't distract from the overall impression
Nellie's was in fine form when I went in on Sunday 11th of November. Old brewery was spot on and the place was very busy.
This pub is like stepping back in time, a warren of small rooms full of old furniture and bric a brac, still gas lit, no electricity here, just the murmer of conversation, ticking clocks and the clink of glasses makes for a wonderful atmosphere. And the price of a pint oof Sam Smiths old brewery bitter? 1.80! Lets face it if they can make money on that we are beinh ripped off by other brewerys who charge 3 pound upwards. Fantastic pub. Not to be missed.
Price of three pints of bitter "down south" 10.50. Price of 5 pints and a lager in Nellie's 11.10. You can't beat it!
Lovely pub.

My first viisit for pprobably over 20 years and I was pleased to see that it had not,in general, changed from those days. "Nellies" is an absolute classic boozer with stone floors; old benches; gas lighting; ocre walls; an assortment of old furniture and bric-a-brac everywhere. Central servery with Sam.Smith's beer on tap and when I ordered 3 pints of bitter I got change from a 5 note (yes-it was only 1.59 a pint!!!!) According to my mate the chap behind the bar was a new landlord so things seemed to have improved from that side is he and the other customers were all very friendly and had no objections to us taking photos of the pub. They have added a pool room at the back and there are a couple of incongruous fruit machines but apart from that it is superb and is a "must visit" pub - we travelled up from Hull on the train to visit this place and it was well worth it. You cannot to go to the East Riding of Yorkshire without having a beer in Nelleis.
The best pub in the country !! Old !!! Old decor with Victorian gas lighting, open fires, marble-topped, cast iron framed tables. I remember it when Nellie was the landlady and there was no bar, only casks held by the wall. The Sammy Smith's beer is still as good, as it should be, given that it comes from a well 162 years' old. Unfortunately, I now live far south in Hertfordshire, so only get to Beverley once a year.
I agree with the last revuer a great pub but the gents is terrible and the smell puts you off going in there. Unfortunatly we are back to square one with landlords as another has gone! So come on Sam Smiths get this pub sorted out. Still the cheapest and most popular in beverley, highly recommended but avoid the gents!
We are very lucky in Beverley to have such a great pub. The beer is usually excellent and still very cheap. Havibg recently gone throuigh troubled times, it now has new welcoming hosts. The only things that make the pub unwelcoming are when the fires are not lit (the only form of heating? and crucial to the atrmosphere in winter) and the state of the gents toilet (simply needs a thorough clean and preferably decorating). Get these sorted and it would rate '10'!

Yes, a Proper Pub [not an pretend hotel lobby or airport lounge] a few seconds' walk from the Bus Station. Sam Smith's range - 'Taddy Lager' 1.70-odd - full of character and 'characters'. So 'realistic' that it's almost not real, if that makes any sense. Like a cartoon version of a real boozer, except that you're in it!
Best to ask directions on first visit. The pub takes some finding and without an obvious sign you could easily walk past without without realising.Everything said previously is true. This is one of the great pubs and well worth a visit to find. You can play locate the gents on your visit, but take a roll of string so you can find your way backn to the bar
Went there earlier on in the year and was not disappointed. The gas light atmosphere has to be savoured. The prices were staggering (1.43 for the Ale) and the food was excellent value and very wholesome too! When I'm next in the area I'll be visiting again for sure. Didn't see too many tourists at this time.
Went there 9/05! Still an unchanged pub house wonder! Fresh bitter pints and full of locals having lunch. Thanks for having a true pub in this day and age. Cheer's ya'll.

It realy does hearten you to find places like this still exist and are also still so popular. Hearing about this pub before visiting just does not prepare you for the atmosphere the place has. Gas lit with flag floors (where you can see them), what looks like 50 year old curtains hanging on a wire, dark walls that haven't seen paint for as long, I'm sure I saw some hobbits in one room but it was too dark to make out. There are some small rooms, larger rooms, kitchen with leaded range and coal hoppers, a mase of corridors and a yard out the back. A new extension with pool tables does not detract and this pub really is popular with all ages. Sam Smiths beer was very good but if this had been a free house with a range of real ales this would surely deserve a 10 out of 10, as it is it is an excellent place and proof that a pub doesn't have to be brightly lit and done out like a "Next" living room, a creche or become wholly given over to food to thrive. With the Tiger Inn, the Woolpack Inn, the Sun Inn and the Green Dragon, amongst others, with "Nellies" as the highpoint, Beverley really is a great place for a night out. Very impressed.
Another historic site not destroyed or updated to some sorry sports bar type of establishment. For a Samuel Smiths house the ales where fresh and the publicans were kind to us "americans"! Can't wait to return here in September!
hello & good luck to the present landlord & landlady of nellies. my name is tony elliott & i took over from nellie & her sister edith as landlord about 30 yrs ago. my eldest son mark was born whilst we were at nellies. IS THE BOTTLE OF WATER FROM THE LAST BOWL OF WASHING UP WATER STILL THERE? I HAVE A FEW OLD PHOTOS OF NELLIES. IF THE PRESENT LANDLORD WOULD LIKE ME TO SEND COPIES THEN PLEASE CONTACT ME AT [email protected] and i will be pleased to send them to you. IT IS STILL A FANTASTIC PUB WITH GREAT REGULARS
Its reputation stands before it. Every I know has heard of Nellies, even if they aren't a local. I could easily lose myself in there, not only because of its rooms and corridors (circa, Alice in Wonderland), but because it is very warm and friendly place. You can't grumble at the prices. God bless Sam Smith.
PS - what is up with the urinal's? I never pick a place to drink based on the condition of the troughs.
Yes, alas, Anna has moved on. The new menu is an example of the Samuel Smith 'corporitisation', along with the super-cooled beer.
New very hardworking landlord and landlady as well as magnificent staff who although overworked (due to the pubs popularity and Sam Smiths policy of not spending any more money than they have to) always give great service. A new food menu has just been introduced and looks fine altough I haven't actually tried it yet.The one thing that currently lets it down is the rundown state of the Gents although I believe that they are about to be refurbished if 'Sam Smith' puts his hand in his pocket. Overall a great pub that I often pass a couple of hours in.
I have always loved this place. Can't fault it for the beer, atmosphere and people. A brilliant student watering hole that's like cheese, it matures with age.
I had the pleasure of working in Beverley for a year or so, and Nellie's became my regular lunchtime watering hole. An amazing pub, gas lit, full of little nooks and crannies, real fires and real ales. The Sam Smith's is particularly good there and, although stronger than the John's, is a lot cheaper, and tastier to my mind.
It's a must-visit place for any ale lover who gets anywhere near Beverley. Try to avoid race days though, if you want to get near the bar.
Made my annual pilgrimage here recently. The OBB had gone up to 1-39 a pint. Scandalous!
Fantastic pub ..... A real time machine of a place, I can imagine it hasn't changed much in 50 years ..... love the smell of the old gas lamps that illuminate the place ( thankfully Brothers health and safety have missed this one ) Great Samuel Smiths beer too !
Went back recently 20 years after it was a regular University watering hole.
Still as brilliant as it was then, except even better for all the little rooms not being filled with smoke!!
One of my top 10 pubs in UK.
It's rare for pubs to get this good , but nellies achieves it by a country mile. Many happy memories here.Beer is superb too and atmosphere fantastic.
Shame it's so far from where we live. What more can you want? - unique setting, friendly and cosy, and beer so cheap you can't believe the change.
Just so that you know what types go there, I was one of the youngest at 59.
If it wasn't real it would be OTT. Sam Smiths ("urged" I believe by the local conseervation lobby) to be blessed for keeping about 90% of the atmosphere that I recall from 30+ Yrs ago.Decent beer.Experincenot to be missed but pub easy to miss as nearly unsigned - when Nelly reigned there was no sign just an ancient rocking horse over the door.Modern version of that still in place plus discreet "White Horse Inn" over the door. If you are asking directions say Nellies not "The White Horse"
I don't know another pub remotely similar to this. Dimly lit by gas lamps, open fires, lots of little rooms.... a fantastic trip back in time.
It's a Sam Smiths pub and this means only beer from their stable is available. They do their own bitter, mild, stout and lager. Still 1.33 for a pint of bitter. How do they do it?
Limited food available from behind the bar - pork pies, scotch eggs, baps and chips (according to the notice behind the bar).
Kids allowed in until 7 or 8ish. Modern room at the back with 2 pool tables.
My favourite pub in the whole world. I love it best on wintery afternoon. I remember warm, orange glows from open fires and old fellas in flatcaps nursing their mild.
Briefly visited this most atmospheric pub for a pint of Sam Smiths (1.33!) while my wife rang the bells at the nearby St Mary's church.
Just superb.
A trip back in time to a gentler age.
the serving from jugs ceased over 30 yrs ago with the demise of Nellie and her sister but gas lights and roaring open winter fires still exist - its still an amazing place to visit if you are in East Yorkshire.
It used to be great back in 1969, but I haven't been there since. is there still no bar, and the ale served from enamel jugs?
wow - what a beaut! BIg fire, low ceilings, dimly-lit, great (cheap) beer and a multitude of rooms. Goes straight into my top ten. I'm going back just to sit there for the day!
Fantastic pub. Last time I was in there the beer had gone up though- 1.29 a pint - are they trying to break me? During the day they sell outstanding Scotch eggs. Great beer as well.
The atosphere here is brilliant but if you want to see some brilliant pubs try these 1 The Black Horse (Preston) Robinsons 2 The Bispham Hotel (Bispham/Blackpool) S Smith 3 The Winter Gardens (Harrogate) Free House 4 The Palladiwm (Llandudno) free House 5 The Picture House (Colwtn Bay) Free house 6 The Blue Anchor (Lancaster) Thwaites 7 The Three Mariners (Lancaster) Thwaites 8 The Hole in the Wall (Bowness on Windermere) 9 The Bell (Moreton on Marsh) 10 The Liverpool Arms (Conwy)
I think the word atmosphere sums up Nellies: from the original gas lights, to the antiques/ junk around the place, the sloping floors and the numerous tiny rooms. To call it an identikit Sam Smiths pub is simply to misunderstand the place. The locals are amazingly friendly. It can be busy after race meetings and at weekends in Hull's universities term times, when the world and his brother descend on the place. The beer is cheap and kept well. A truly outstanding and interesting pub.
The Beverley ring road goes by the back door of the pub to clear up what two earlier reviewers mentioned. The bus station is next door for potential pub crawlers !
Only one problem here, thats it's o dark, but a number of Sam Smiths pubs have beautiful interiors, just a pity there is not more of them and that some of the owners are so miserable. They have the old brewery system where everything sold in their pubs is brewed by themselves,as for food I was not impressed but I only wanted something to ward of the hunger. Pity the brewery seems to have bought a load of pubs down South but Nellies is a nice pub and if I get chance I will visit the place again, the cider and stout are quite tasty.
Probably one of the finest pub interiors in the country. Food good value, Sam Smiths beer OK [go for the Oatmeal Stout in a bottle - mmmm].
This has got to be in my top five pubs
It woulds be vey interesting to see if the policy of not paying for performing rights works in London where Sam Smiths has bought a chain of pubs<I don't know if the landlady has changed since I was there (the one was a cheerful dark haired lady with a attractive figure),but but I would hardly call the road a "ring road" but more a busy back street,it's easy enough to find as it is almost opposite one of Beverleys famous churches (if you have time it's worth a look, goes back to the Danes) as for the ceiling I wonder if Sam is willing to get it cleaned when the no-smoking law comes in.
Much publicity recently that , due to its owner's (Sam Smiths Brewery) policy of not paying copryight for music, it cannot do weddings etc as no music performances allowed. Jazz club has gone too. Be very careful as you leave as you step straight into traffic on a busy ring road. Its got a good go ahead licensee now (Linda) who might shake it up a bit. (Why are gas lamps so appealling? A bit like children with rickets and beubonic plague - old doesnt always equate to good)
A 16 century coaching Inn just winthin the town bar. You could imagine Cromwell walking in. Wonky old tables, roaring fires, gas lamps and a celing so yellow with nicotine it is practically ocre in colour.
A real atmosphere pub with a heap of history. Known locally as Nellies after one of a pair of sisters who owned it up until the 70's.
I visited this pub a few weeks ago and despite being given directions to it missed it the first time-it looks nothing like a pub from the outside, the only thing is that you need to adjust your eyes as it is quite dark, nice an warm though and the floor seemed uneven. Beer wise as its a Sam Smiths house it's good but is the normal fayre-the landlady was freindly, handy for the bus station but the thing to watch out for is the white horse above the door
I used to work in Nellie's a few years ago and found it a fantastic, unusual pub with a great atmosphere and very friendly locals. I dont live in beverley anymore but would definatly make it a reason to visit again!! One in a million..(Oh but watch out for the spooks...it is quite an experience when your one of the last ones in at night!!)

This pub is BY far the best in Beverley - I find it hard to believe that anyone could "loathe" such a glorious ale house of the old school style. Its mostly free of fruit machine/jukebox crap (though there is a dodgy newer addition at the back). If you want atmosphere, fireplaces and pub-perfect lighting this IS your place...check out the upstairs jazz every wednesday - a treat...

Apparently the main selling point of this place is the fact that it still has its original gas lighting. Apart from that, it's just another identikit Sam Smiths pub which sells cheap beer. Result? It's usually packed, and the gas lighting means it's also uncomfortably hot. This is a place you'll either love or loathe. I fall into the latter category, despite liking Sam Smith's bitter ...
