Large 'done out' pub opposite the station. It's okay for a swift lager - that's it.

Got told about this pub by a mate who said it was now quite a trendy, vast bar after the Harvester refurb. I have to admit, I was very impressed. I went on a friday night and it was rammed, but the staff were so quick you would have thought it was a quiet night. It seemed to be more of an over 25 crowd which suited me fine. Apart from the drunk bloke who took the mick out of my 70's retro jacket about 10 times, a pleasant night was had

This pub is my local and I often frequent it for drinks in the evening, light bites or sometimes a meal.
The bar is very contemporary and so much better than when it was the Harvester. The staff ar friendly and the drinks are reasonably priced too. This bar showcases a lovely beer garden which is delightful to sit out in the summer. My only reservation is that the bar can become very noisy as the acoustics are not great, due to the minimilisic style of the bar and high celings.
I would recommend going here for a weekday bite to eat, drink with friends, but if you want somewhere quieter then it might not be ideal at the weekends during the evenings as it is hard to have a conversation.
Nevertheless, a really lovely bar and worth a visit!

Had a great time here celebrating a friend of ours birthday. Staff were very friendly & the food really good. I thought the beer selection a little limited however what I was served was fine & obviously well managed.
All in all a great improvement on the previous pub.

Often come here for lunch but came in early evening yesterday and the atmosphere had a lovely buzz. As we left at around 7pm the bar was already very busy. Staff were friendly and the food was good. They seemed to have changed their menu so we opted for salads and dessert. Will definitely be back in the evening as well as lunch time.
|
Very busy whenever I have been there in the evening but there have always been plenty of bar staff and they servie quickly. Bar staff also seem to search for the next customer rather than just pick the one with the loudest voice, which I like. garden area is great and will be lovely in the Summer. Only problem is the lack of seating inside which forces you to stand up in little groups. Perhaps they could get some high tables with bar stools.

my 23yr old daughter, her 24yr old boyfriend and i got dressed-up smart and had her birthday lunch at the new inn today.the matre`d/?manager today demanded in no uncertain terms that the boyfriend remove his cap before entering....this is no yobbo-laddie but a respectable,snazzy-dressed professional. we were all a little taken aback. then we waited 45 minutes for our lunch, which was amazingly average, costing 37 before drinks. the spaghetti bolognese was totally without herbs or garlic, offered without a spoon, but a knife and fork! and tasted and looked liked tinned stuff, the only plus being that when i complained to our waitress we were offered one free dessert as compensation. suffice to say,i will never cross their threshold again.

Nice service, though did not clear the table quickly. Beers avarage but a good selection of real ales. Could be in better nik thought. I had a steak and Stilton pie bloody good will go again. There are trying. Asked what ales I like. And would I like to try before I buy.

I made my first visit to the New Inn last Friday. Firstly, what a fantastic job the owner has made of the refurb. I haven't been in this pub since the late 80's. It was a dark and dingy place with loads of trouble, hence the reason I haven't bothered since. We got in there at about 7.30pm and it was already quite busy. It seemed to be full of people that had gone in there early doors from work and it was also starting to fill up with the evening crowd. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The biggest surprise was the price of the drink. Normally pubs that have had this scale of refurb bump up their drink prices to try and recoup their money. This was really good, in fact it was a lot cheaper than some shitholes i've had the mispleasure of drinking in. The crowd were the older set like myself (40's) so they tend to just have a good laugh when there out with no hassle and there were no young prats causing grief. I ended up seeing a lot of them later on upstairs in the Bridge Bar, which made sense, another great venue if you stay upstairs. I will definitely be going back to this one, hat's off to the new owner, you're doing a great job. A really nice place to go for a drink.

This place is pretty much my local and was a little surprised by some of the reviews on here as most of the time service is pretty good and the place is usually quite busy. Have only eaten here once but thought the food was fine - though only ordered mains.
I would say the bar staff could use a lesson though, particularly the younger ones who seem more interested in chatting than serving.
Otherwise a massive improvement since the refurb and an excellent addition to an otherwise pretty slim selection of pubs in the local area.

Well I am keeping my rating at a 7. This is the first time I have been back since it got refurbished, and I was slightly unsettled by the reviews previously posted. Nearly went to the george but then saw the reviews weren't much better ... will probably pop down the george later this year.
So I was out celebrating my new job with my wife. The overall price for us was 45 which was a shared (normal size) starter, a main course each, and a shared choccy fudge dessert, 1 glass of wine and 2 pints of stella, and a cappuccino (which was pretty ok(being a coffee snob)) including tip.
Starter came fairly quickly and was average, main courses took about 15 mins after starters, but were very good, and dessert was nice. Stella was very fresh and wife was satisfied by the wine.
It was quite busy, a thursday evening with about 2-3 tables unoccupied (@8.30pm). Most of the customers were probably professional/city commuters or middle aged/retired age. So probably mainly 30+. People dressed smarter than your average pub.
Left feeling quite satisfied, toilets ok, not cleanest but good quality nevertheless.
Didn't notice anyone around getting annoyed or bad service, and I suspect the lamp by the serving door which switches on and off is actually a secret signal to say when the food is ready. (I forgot to ask tho....)
The staff were actually better than average / very good in service. I am sucker for service and I didn't have to wait long to catch the eye of anyone.

@darwin1. You don't have to be Einstein to understand where some of these adverse comments are coming from: some of us just happen to have had poor and sometimes perplexing service when we've been there (like when they can only serve starters and main courses to you at the same time). As this is one aspect of the service one might experience at the New Inn, I see no reason to doubt the accounts and motivation of others who have criticised the service.
The only motivation I have for relating my experiences honestly is that I love going out and with the pub industry on its knees, it annoys me to see a place not run as well as it could be - and the New Inn definitely deserves better; it's a wonderful place. It's quite possible that if I visited again during any busy evening I'd have a good time - but I just don't have enough incentive to travel back there and hand over my cash. I hope you and everyone else who likes the place and all it offers continue to do so.
|
Really do not understand where these adverse comments are coming from and what their motivation is. Popped in last night for a pint about 9.00pm and the place without exageration had about 200 people in it, maybe more. A few months have passed since the opening and still 200 people at 9.00pm on a Wednesday night !! Enough said people will always vote with their feet and apart from the very early days i have had nothing but good experiences in this place as have many others i speak to.

Despite the fact this place looks infinitely better, the atmosphere is abysmal. Staff mostly young and clueless - if you're ordering a gin and tonic, you don't necessarily want the bottle dumped in to the point of the glass overflowing everywhere. Haven't eaten here personally, but my father had food poisoning after a burger here.
Needs a hands-on manager who cares and some lessons in food preparation.

I'm new to this site as was looking for info on a pub I'm going to soon (The Thickett in Annerly) and thought I'd have a look at the reviews of the New Inn after a recent visit.
I'm new to the area so can't comment on how it was before but on my 1st visit a couple of weeks ago I have to say I was impressed, I thought the atmosphere and decor was unlike that of any other drinking establishment in the area, not quite a bar, not quite a pub but something new in between.
While they may be having a few teething problems it seems from reading the reviews I wont be writing it off just yet and will be going back. I've also heard from people outside of the area singing it's praises so hopefully my second visit will be as good as the 1st.
Will update after the next visit!

What a place! I first visited this place a few weeks back. 12.30, and there was only one person chopping salad behind the bar, who didn't acknowledge me. There were other staff milling about the place, but it was the longest time I've ever had to wait in a place that was virtually empty inside. Still, had plenty of time to gaze at the decor and it looks very nice.
Visited with my wife recently and ordered drinks. We were going to eat, so we asked to set up a tab. The barmaid asked for my credit card. I wanted it swiped and returned to me (something other places can do), but she wanted to keep it behind the bar. I acknowledged that some customers do runners, but explained the security risks to me of leaving my card with total strangers, but she said it was the only way to set up an open tab. We ended paying for a round of drinks and ordered food up front with cash.
The really interesting bit was ordering the food; after umming and arring over the menu in the delights of the sunny rear garden for 15 minutes, I went inside to order two starters and two main courses. Sitting outside to eat was apparently a big problem; it seems they just can't manage to serve a starter, let you finish it, and then have your main course served after a suitable break. No - we would be served our starters AND our main courses at the same time! Now, call me fussy, but I'm not used to watching lovely hot meat and veg slowly getting cold in a stiff breeze while I plough my way through a starter that I'd like to actually savour. Consequently I cancelled the starters and my gurgling stomach was the only reason I stayed to eat at all. When I told my wife, she just couldn't believe it.
So this establishment missed out on a substantial tip and also a tenner extra that we would have spent on a full meal. My wife loved sitting outside that day. I liked the relaxed atmosphere and the Doombar. My wife works damned hard and was like a kid waking up on Christmas day when she saw this place - it looks lovely. And now she isn't going to bother visiting the New Inn again, and neither am I.

Tried the new look New Inn last night and was very disappointed.
I see that I am not alone in thinking that the atmosphere is lacking as is the staff training and interest in serving customers or making them feel welcome.
What a waste of money the refurb has been if it continues like this. Not recommended at all now.

the stout one is correct and in fact this is only the second posti have ever posted to any web site.I am not the manager, owner or employee but as i say do as i advised and try for yourself.

This pub/restaurant is the BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO THE AREA FOR YEARS!!!!!!!!
The management and staff try their best and really cant be faulted on their attitade though many are new and need training which will come with time and are already much improved. In fact my main issue is the fact the pub it is so good that it is too popular and busy(and seems to be getting busier) so the service is not immediate as i would like. The communication of the age and restuarant ordering policy could be better and a few well positioned signs(not bits of paper) would help but remember the place is new. You dont have to be Einstein to know why the age policies exists and unfortunately as always it is not fair on some. Anyway dont believe me see for yourself the hundreds of people that use this place daily and especially the groups of mums that use the place in the evening which is always an indication of how good and clean a pub is !!!!!

I went to the recently refurbished New Inn last week, as an alternative to the sorely missed George. Sure it looks pretty, but essentially they've polished a sh*t. The staff were so disinterested that I almost wanted to combust to get their attention though they undoubtedly would've treated me with the same lackadaisical approach they treat every other customer. The beer and surroundings are good but the ambience is the equivalent of a pet's funeral. Avoid. And they don't let you in if you don't provide a birth certificate proving you were born before 1984. See, even their age restrictions are Orwellian

Heard it was the new pub on the block, and decided to have a look. Went in with myself and my Girlfriend on a Friday evening, after a long week working in London. Ordered are drinks, and as we were sipping them , Manger of the Bar asked us to drink up, and leave because, from Friday nights onwards, it operates a 25's and over policy, and a 21 and over policy in the week days. I found him to be utterly rude, as he probed me further, asking if anyone else was going to join us (as if its any of his business) and then asked us to leave. As people who live in the area, Hayes do have a lot of yobs surrounding the pub, But in my case, 6 O'clock, in my suit a briefcase to be totally out of order. I was embraced and humiliated to be stood up in front of Member of the Community as He did. Would happily discourage anyone NOT TO GO THEIR!

Did like this pub but was a bit disappointed when we went in there for a birthday and was told to be quiet!! Not impressed and wont be going back there again which is a shame because we really liked it before but spent a few hundred quid in there and wont be going back again!!

Its a bar/restaurant as opposed to a pub but decor is very nice. Selection of lagers Stella, Fosters and Carlsberg but only one Real Ale called "Splash" but it was very good. Friendly bar staff but took a while to get served on occasion.

Recent refurbished we were excited by the thought of a new land lord and new family pub. unfortunately this pub has not come with the promises we thought it would.. The service us slow the food was late arriving out if the kitchen .... An hour and on the next visit when we wanted to take our kids one Sunday for lunch THEY HAVE A RIDICICULOUS POLICY OF NO UNDER 5's!!!!! Surely it's the over 5 's that are worse behaved.. While I understand maybe no children in the bar area what about the garden or restaurant! Come on mr land lord you have moved in and taken the rights of all us patents having a social life. Bring back the harvester ... A family friendly pub for a family friendly Hayes!!!
|
It re-opened last Friday and is absolutely lovely! They've opened the whole of the bar and restaurant area up, have a nice menu, and have done up the garden - all v posh, but drinks prices are still quite reasonable. Looked like their Sunday roasts were good!

Good looking pub, recently refurbished, eaten there twice both times by the new owners who are keen to impress. Food average to good, prices normal for pubs. Beer selection for ale drinkers is interesting, its got TEA and another real ale of which name escapes me but my Dad went back for another so it must have been good. Nice atmosphere
