user reviews of the Pied Bull, Chester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Quiet compared to other nearby pubs. Pleasant nevertheless. I tried one of their own brews, Bull's Hit, and a very nice pale ale it was. Several other of the pubs own ales and one guest were available. Their own brews are produced in a tiny brewery under the pub.

Very nice old pub clearly aimed at tourists. Their own beers are pretty good - tried Irristibull & Taurus and both were very nice. Didn't try the food but it looked good and lots of people were eating.

Visited in April with the family whilst on a pre-holiday shopping trip. I had the Black Bull (a porter) followed by Tangibull (pale ale) and both were great. Would recommend both the pub and its own Pied Bull ales.

I keep meaning to post about this place, but then forgetting what I wanted to say about it ! Well for a start, it is genuinely old, with low wooden beams abounding. Having said that though, after the entrance has been negotiated, it is fairly open plan inside. The bar is on the right, and has around 6 beers on handpump. Three or four of them are their own brews, and the others are varied guests. I usually drink their own beers, and on my last two visits have had Taurus (a stout – very nice) and Red Bull (quite nice also).

Food is available (at a separate counter), but I’ve never eaten here. Posters on the wall advertise a Burger Monday and a Sunday Roast, so I may try in future.

For those who need their megasport fix, there is an unobsrusive TV, which may be on for big events. There can also be background music – on one occasion it was all by Pink Floyd – you have been warned !

It can get busy, but I usually manage to find a seat. There is also a new beer garden / smokers corner out the back, which I’ve heard good reports of, but never actually visited.

7/10 – one of my favourite pubs in the city, but marked down due to the Pink Floyd connection !

Called in the other week while waiting for the nearby Goat and Munch to open. Had a pint of Adnams Broadside which was in very good nick. The Pied Bulls' owners have recently created a pleasant outdoor/smoking area at the rear of the pub.

Home brewed beer still shite - don't bother.

After aborting my trip to Watergates I decided instead to pay a return visit to the Pied Bull. I made the right choice.

Available were two of Pied Bull's own ales (brewed on the premises) - Matador (5.0%) and Red Bull (5.5%). I was torn between the two but the barman helpfully recommended the Matador, and it proved to be a sound choice. Also available was an ale by Blue Bell Brewery and a Liverpool Organic Brewery if memory serves me correctly. Plus one cider - Black Rat.

As per my previous visit, this pub had a nice relaxed feel to it, and a jolly decent pint to boot. Well worth a visit.

We arrived at this brewery pub shortly after 8pm on a Sunday after a meal locally and it was the busiest pub in town that we found as well as being the last of the 7 pubs from the 2015 GBG that I wanted to visit while in Chester.

6 hand pumps with 5 Pied Bull ales and 1 guest. I selected a pint of Pied Bull Pied Eyed @ 4.0%. My first beer from this brewery and it was very good, good strength even thought it’s only 4.0% and was kept well.

The building is very old, as well as the pub also has accommodation available on site as well as selling food, it’s a real all-rounder!

Probably a very good pub on another day (though the ale was very decent) but on my visit the place was pretty soulless so after just 1 pint we moved on. This may sound harsh but my opinion can only be based on my visit.

6/10 for me.

I went for an Adnams, as I recognised the brand. It was exceptional.

If they keep guest beers thus well, I probably missed out on what they brew on site. Only noticed the brewery signs after ordering.

Only complaint would be the heating..... Easily the hottest pub I have ever been in. :-)

I have been wanting to visit this pub (and the Red Lion next door) for some time but they have always escaped me on my visits to Chester. This week I managed it!

The Pied Bull is deceptively large inside, from the outside you imagine it may be quite cramped but this is not the case at all. Well laid out, plenty of seating. A pleasant ambience with some quiet background music. It felt quite traditional with the dark wood etc.

I went for a pint of the Black Bull 5.2% which as you may expect from the name is a dark porter. It set me back £3.30 which I think is fine for Chester city centre. It was a very pleasant pint, and I'd be happy to recommend both the beer and the pub itself.

I thought the beer was the best I tried in Chester (the Cross Keys was close) and the pub a superb all-rounder where food didn't dominate. Friendly too.

A bit surprised by the food comments, the menu is large and the food good but I would not choose this pub for a posh meal. By contrast we tasted several of the pub's beers and we found them all excellent, and for us the pub had the feel of a drinker's pub and not a food pub at all. It was Friday and Saturday night, I suppose it could be different in the week.

Was expecting more from this pub. But was a little disappointed. As others say, it seems to be geared towards food. It is still a reasonably good pub, but nothing to write home about. Beers on were Adnams Broadside, Cheshire Brewhouse Cheshire Gap, Pied Bull Sensi-Bull, Bull's Hit & Red Bull & Titanic Pier 54. A 6/10 from me.

First port of call on my recent trip to Chester. The city itself is like a cheaper version of York in my opinion.

The pub is to all tense and purposes is an eating establishment. Although it is cosy with nice furnishings along with a real wood burning fire.

The porter what I sampled was okay but nothing to write home about.

I suspect this is a place where you would treat your other half to a lovely meal no doubt?

Disappointing, the home brewed beers were dull, this a pub more geared towards food, tourists dominate. Quite sad really.
nokegthanks - 22 May 2013 01:32
Cosy pub in the centre of Chester which offers its own ales brewed in it's own microbrewery below the pub. The bar man spoke passionately about the ale and so I tried the Matador which was well kept and an excellent pint. Also sampled a local ale from Red Willow Wreckless which was outstanding. Nice vibe, well worth a visit.

Spent two nights here , staff great , food great, beer splendid. They had three of their own beers plus four guests. They were all in fine condition. A must visit in Chester.
lotus - 2 Jan 2013 12:24
Had two of their own brewed beers on yesterday lunchtime when we visited. Both were in good condition. Has won a CAMRA Award for its strong ale ( Matador), but this one was not on yesterday. Food was good quality and reasonable value.
PoorBeerHater - 7 Nov 2012 09:38
Reasonably priced brew pub serving a good range of beers from the independents. I sampled a half of their own strong hoppy beer (7%) at 1.60 for a half. It was so good I had to have another. Highly recommended.
arihall - 12 Oct 2012 15:03
Okay enough - ale was nice enough ( a pint of Cosmic at 6%) but can see where the 'bland' epithet comes from. Not somewhere you'd want to spend a great deal of time in.
anonymous - 10 Dec 2011 00:35
Good beers but bland interior and seems food orientated. Nice outside. Chester Pub of the Year!!!
rpf1955 - 20 Nov 2011 18:21
Nice old building. Bit dull inside but serves some good beer from its own and other micro breweries.
founddrunkinyourgarden - 10 Nov 2011 16:56
tatton brewery not yatton apologies
fat_beer_badger - 4 Oct 2011 21:34
a pub that surely deserves to be in the good beer guide, the range of ales over the six handpumps was excellent, and the service quick and friendly. The pint of locally brewed Yatton Brewery "Ale" (3.10) was divine and very well received in the relaxed atmospheres,8/10
fat_beer_badger - 4 Oct 2011 21:28
Very disappointed with this pub. It looks good from the outside but inside is a different story.

I was expecting it to be laid back but it was very rowdy. All of the seating at the front of the pub had been taken which left the dining area at the back of the pub the only place to sit with my pint of Spitting Feathers Old Wavertonian. There were two other people sat here who were just having a drink - which is a bit difficult when you're sat at a table with place mats, cutlery and condiments. One of the bar staff even came up to me and asked if I wanted to see the menu!

A large plaque on the wall says something along the lines that this pub is the oldest coaching house in Chester where the first coach with four horses left for Birkenhead.

The Pied Bull isn't a bad pub, but then it's nothing special either!

Nice pub, good ales and friendly staff.
alerick - 29 May 2011 20:04
Lovely pub with good food and well-kept real ales. The two gay guys behind the bar, Luke and Tom, are hilarious, too.
handsometw_t - 4 Apr 2011 18:35
A must vist city centre pub. Traditional low, dark wooden beams, open log fire & overall cosy ambience. Regular beer festivals & a great choice on my visit with 6 handpumps - Oxford - IPA, Liverpool Organic - Honey Blonde, Frodsham - Buzzin', Adnams - Broadside, a brew from Titanic & their own Pied Pull beer. 1/3 pint glasses is always a nice touch to be able to sample. They are apparently building a 1 barrel plant in the cellar which will turn it into a micro brewery & will open the end of April. Good luck to them.

Dropped in here and wished we had stayed here a lovely charming place to while away in Chester. Extremely friendly staff and very helpful.
Excellent beer, we did not eat here but we will come back to stay and try out everything they have to offer

Almost at the end of the tourist run steet which make it much more enjoyable. Nice Tiger ale and another historic pub attached to the oldest inn in Chester. Good local feel to the place. Thx.

I agree with realalechav - an excellent pub to visit if you're out and about in Chester. Popped in on Thursday and had 2 pints of Everard's Tiger plus a rump steak and chips. Very nice atmosphere but my only gripe is that one bloke seemed to be doing everything - dashing back and forth from the bar to the food counter and taking phone calls in the reception area. Really could do with more staff on in the afternoons. Other than that, a brilliant place.
SilentButDeadly - 6 Sep 2009 13:26
Fantastic pub. Strongly recommend to stay over here if visiting the city
