user reviews of Gatehouse, Norwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Just enjoyed 2 beers in this very traditional pub. I tried Oak Grain and Woodfoods White IPA, both excellent.. I enjoyed the press cuttings on the wall - very amusing.
One of the reasons that i am submitting a review is that on one site i looked at it suggested it was closed. Still a vibrant entity with a music programme most Friday, Saturday and Sundays's

First impressions is a nice cosy pub. Nice selection of real ales including Abbot, Wherry, Oak. Nice open real fire. Landlord is jolly and prices are very competitive, lots of music ranging from Folk to 1950s, 60s and 1970s. They are in the Grapevine magazine for gigs so give them a look

Large garden and lots of parking spaces, I certainly will come to this pun more often and so should you.

First time I been in this pub and I have to say I was very surprised. It is old fashion type pub, and a really good atmosphere. A good selection of ales and very reasonable prices, all very well kept. Good lagers as well. It has a pool table, and open fire, and nice carpets. Land lord is a cheerful chap, and traditional.

The prices are really cheap the cheapest I have found. It has live music on Saturdays, and various type of folk on other week days as mentioned in another review.

It has a really big garden and lots of parking. Worth visit and you will be greeted in a very friendly manner. If any students out there worth a trip. I personally will be visiting this place again and again.

Old traditional pub as they use to be as they say. The main bar has nice ales, Grain Oak (at 2.40 a pint!!!), Greene King IPA, Greene King Abbot, Woodforde's Wherry, and Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Bitter, this is a Yorkshire Bitter and very popular and established in 1758 (2.20 a pint!) All these are the cheapest I have seen in Norwich. They also have different varieties of beer's, draught as well has bottled. Also this pub has an occasional guest ale as well. Nice oak bar!

The interior is very comfortable, nice carpet and comfortable seating, nice open coal fire, seating out side and a very large garden backing onto the river Wensum.

This pub also has music Folk Music on a Wednesday and Thursday, Celtic Folk on a Sunday. On a Saturday they have 1950s onwards music. Great place for any every one and cheap prices so I recommend students go to this bar they would be VERY welcome. The owner/barman is a jolly chap, and mentions "wonderful" when serving his local ales and beers.

The Gate House also has a darts team on a Monday, pool teams on Thursday, and a Crib team. Plenty of car parking space so no need to worry about that. Open from 12 pm onwards. Wonderful atmosphere go and give it a try, it's one of the best places in the City!!

Nice traditional pub, good ales all well kept and very reasonable prices. Large beer garden at rear. Plenty of parking space. Nice open fire very homely. Great music, including folk on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Music on the weekend ranging from 1950s to 1970s era.

Landlord very jolly and traditional not many pubs like this anymore so I recommend people some along if you like a traditional pub and good atmosphere. Lots of old world items behind the bar. Pub has its own Darts and pool and crib teams.

I have been going here for about 10 years now. The beer is good, the music is good. Maybe whoever gave negative reviews need to think again. After all maybe he was rushed off his feet and had a lot on his mind that may of provided misconceptions on his reply or approach to customers.

I know the feeling, indianna58. I also shall not return to this pub, which deserves a decent tenant, while this rude, arrogant midget continues to hold the licence. Could be a great pub with a friendly person running it. This vertically-challenged creature will not be getting one more penny of my money.

I have been in this pub a few times and agreed with most of the comments listed, especially the quirky landlord, thinking him a bit strange for a landlord, but harmless. Last night a visit to the pub changed all that. We had a couple of pints and I ordered another round and when the landlord had finished I asked him how much. He mumbled something behind his moustache and I asked him politely again How much is it?, he spat back vehemently I TOLD YOU £7.28, I was astonished at his rudeness and when I had recovered I apologised that I hadn`t heard him the first time. He then moaned that he had to repeat everything he said to me, I explained that I was a little hard of hearing and he complained "How was I supposed to know you were deaf. I was very annoyed at being spoken to like that and told him how rude he was, to which he replied, If you don`t like it don`t come in. I then said that I wasn`t suprised that there was never anyone in the pub and he told me it was none of my business. It will be a cold day in hell before I return to that pub, I would much rather walk the extra half mile or so to another one. That man does not deserve to have any customers and I will certainly tell anyone that listens what, he is like. I look forward to the day he buggers off and we get a decent landlord. Its a shame because it is a lovely old pub and the gardens could be fantastic. I live in hope!

I go to the Gatehouse for the Irish sessions it has on Sunday and Wednesday nights. From my perspective, it is an excellent venue.

John, the landlord, enjoys the music which is a big plus (sometimes, in other venues, you can feel a session is just about tolerated...). There is a reasonable range of real ale (Abbot, Wherry, Green King IPA and Grains Oak) well kept and at very reasonable prices. Both bars are good acoustically and IMO, the sort of old fashioned feel of the premises (and for that matter, the landlord ;-) ) help towards a good atmosphere for the sessions.

While I'm going there for the purpose of music, I feel that if I lived in Norwich (rather than up the coast in North Norfolk), I would pop into the Gatehouse from time to time for a quiet pint, perhaps sitting outside in the field at the back on a nice summer evening.

I've used this pub on a couple of occasions. It occupies an excellent location with a large lawned riverside garden. Unfortunately the premises have seen better times and are in need of refurbishment. This is a shame as the historic interior of the pub has beenfeatured in a recent edition of the Norfolk Nips CAMRA periodical. The bow tie wearing, exotic waistcoated, long haired landlord has a small but loyal clientele and supplies a friendly but quirky drinking experience.

The Victorian Garden Gnome (brilliant description, babbs) was on good form on a recent evening visit I made to this pub. He actually chuckled a couple of times! Something must have tickled his fancy, although I know not what. Anyway he does keep a good pint or three, which are all very reasonably priced, and so I shall return at some point.

I found the description of the 'Victorian garden gnome' quite apt for the guy behind the bar at this pub. He lost patience with us as we were deciding what to order and instead started pouring points for the locals that were stepping through the door behind us. He also queried our selection of drinks, which was rather odd. Real ales available were Norfolk Grain Oak, Greene King IPA & Abbot Ale and Woodfordes Wherry. The interior is a bit dark and dingy, but retains a traditional feel. If you like slightly quirky pubs and very quirky landlords, this one is defintely for you. I would visit again despite the attitude.

Karl, are we talking about the same pub or are you actually the landlord? The guy who runs this pub is known throughout Norwich as being the most miserable and awkward person ever to have a pub. He complains if you change your drink throughout the evening, wont give change for gaming machines and is just out and out rude. He has a very small click of regulars who he has either hypnotised or they owe him money and for either reason they keep coming back. I wouldnt discourage anyone from going there just to check out what I say is true. Never known a person less suited to running a pub.
