Another Harvey's pub in Brighton, quite close to the station. We stayed in the front bar and ordered from the Sussex Best Bitter, IPA, Old Ale, Armada & Christmas Ale. I finally relented and went for the Best. There was no sign of a real cider.
Always go here when visiting. Lovely old fashion pub with good food and full range of Harveys including Old on our visit. Just a few yards from the station.
Good old fashioned English pub, but with a cosmopolitan Brighton charm. Harvey's beers only, but a choice of 6, so fine by me, but it takes the score down from an 8! Busy early evening so a bit of a wait for food, but the bar staff explained this as soon as She had put my order to the chef.30 mins to wait is really not an issue. This is the type of pub that makes it worth the walk up from the town. It's close to the train station and amongst a number of good pubs.
Stank of paint when I visited a month ago. Good bitter. Full of Brighton & Hove Albion memorabilia, so aiming for the pre-match crowd.
Visited on Friday 24 January with Bill and Rog. Overpowering smell of paint as the inside and out are being done up. There was drying paint in the left hand bar where we sat and quite a few people in the lower bar and the ghastly excrescence at the rear, presumably to get away from the paint! Beer was ok I had the Hadlow/Pale/IPA or whatever it's called this week and the Old which was much better than last time, and we ate here as well and soon got used to the paint smell. Unfortunately with the bare walls now devoid of any decoration there was an acoustic effect which made our bad language resonate rather loudly! Friendly and chatty barman who answered our questions about the redecoration with cheerfulness. I hope the food menu is more extensive than the good but limited fare currently on offer. It'll be interesting to see what happens when the refurb is complete.
Good range of Harvey's beers, but the place was a bit congested and - despite a large crowd of fans before a football match - couldn't manage to put on any food at all. "It's the chef's day off." Why on earth couldn't he/she have made a few sandwiches the day before and put them in the fridge? Poor show.
Looked in on the way past, going up to the Albert, where the monthly music session has moved. Two people in the TV bar, only one the other side, very unlike normal, even the game players have gone.
Sat in this gem of a pub as I write this. I tried the Harvey's Dark Mild, Lewes Castle Brown Ale, Sussex Best Bitter and Armarda Ale - all were in top condition. I also had a chicken and stuffing baguette which was decent.
Yes the pub is tatty and could do with a lick of paint and perhaps a new carpet. But those are the only changes I would make. The staff are friendly enough and it's always nice to see a pub full of regular drinkers in this day and age.
This place blows out of the water the theory that pubs close to railway stations are not worth the bother. Will definitely be coming back.
I gather from the net, that Graham is leaving. Here's hoping that the next landlord/tenant keeps the beer as well, but drops those outrageous prices back down to those that are recommended by Harvey's.
Lovely harveys pub, nice and friendly. Service and smiling staff great. A gem of a pub.
Traditional pub, a little tatty inside these days but the usual decent beers from the Harveys range and others. Food more than acceptable given the price, and passed the Mrs R test.
Another pub my partner & I went into on our jaunt to Brighton (March 2012). A reasonable selection of ales and quite a pleasant afternoon spent in there. Would go in again on our next visit down to Brighton.
That's better! Went in twice over the weekend with Mrs Monk and can report that the Hadlow, Best, Armada and Old were all excellent. Had a very good value and excellent quality Sunday lunch in a traditional pub - as opposed to two nameless pubs, one that we went in and out quickly and the other we just looked in that resembled creches complete with obnoxious middle class pushy parents. Good to see the pub full of traditional drinkers. Will visit again shortly with the boys. 8/10
nipped for a pint 1st feb, cracking pint of old, raised a glass to the memory of lovely lisa Johnstone who i first met when she worked behind the bar here. God i miss her.
Oh dear! What has gone wrong with the Nelson? Mrs Monk and I popped in on a Saturday lunchtime (because the Basketmakers was rammed at 12.20) the beer was fine, the food menu uninspiring and the place almost empty so we had a quick drink and left. Mrs M was unimpressed with the state of the ladies' loo! Went in again a on a November Monday at around 5-6pm with Billy boy, one other customer and it smelt like there had been a tramps convention there. The beer was fine and I was going to have the old as well but it was so depressing we left. This is one of my favourite pubs but it seems to be falling apart - I really hope we've just been unlucky and it picks up soon. 8/10 for the beer but 4/10 for food, choice, ambience etc.
This is a fantastic pub - perfectly kept Harveys ales, space out at the back to enjoy it, and the main part of the pub is really old with loads of character.
Friendly and efficient staff too, well worth stopping off here before you catch your train.
Brighton is a great place to wait for a train with this pub and the Evening Star so close to the station. Great selection of Harvey's beer, interesting clientele and friendly staff make this a fine pub.
6 harveys beers on in good form, traditional front bar area with a smart modern back area, helpful landlord.
Traditional and friendly, as one expects from Harvey's, with a good mix of clientele. Wide range of their own ales, with the Old being in good order.
I would go along with the last comment. Although we do some of the other more obvious beer speciality pubs when we visit we wouldn't dream of missing out on this place especially this time of year now the Old's on. We were there on Saturday and all was well except perhaps it is a bit pricey.
Always worth a visit - a traditional little local with good beer and much bric-a-brac to view. 2 rooms with a further area at the back. We've never had a problem here although as has been mentioned the prices are probably a little on the high side but we still go here when in town.
Quiet on a Wednesday afternoon but nice surroundings and serving a very pleasant (if a tad pricey) Harveys Mild. Looks like they had the builders in the room at the back.
A proper traditional locals pub,two bars one of which was showing cricket on a large screen. A sprinkling of people in and out on friday afternoon, the beer was decent, worth a visit.
Firsty visit for a good few years, and the pub is still as I remembered it. Bustling with a good atmosphere and just as a pub should be. The only downside was that the Harveys bitter was not as good as previously, and at 3.30 a pint not cheap. Overall, I preferred the Basketmakers on the day.
Everyone's said it already. just keep going back for whatever harveys dark beer is on.....dark mild this weekend
I thought the place was closed at first as it appeared to be dark but then saw signs of movement inside. It isn't the lightest of pubs and also like the Tardis it is bigger inside than expected. The pub goes back a long way to a conservatory and garden. I like these kind of pubs which don't conform to a regular layout. The staff were friendly. There was a good range of Harvey's ales available. Their excellent Sussex Best is familiar around the south east so it was good to try one of their other beers. The Armada was very drinkable! A good real ale pub and handy for the station.
Not sure what to make of this place, looks good, proper pub but....the beer range not extensive and the Harveys wasn't at its best. The back of the pub reminded me of the Gunmakers in Clerkenwell! Bogs spotless.
Really is a very good pub. Armada and Harveys Porter spot on, this time. Eaten here a few times now and the food excellent and good value for money too
Another pub which is a "must" if I'm in Brighton. Super little place with much going for it and, of course, excellent Harvey's beers. I agree that there are a few bits and pieces which could be got rid off to help make the place just a bit more special (the large TV screen; the old air filter unit and the muzak), but it still is a wonderful pub and will always be one of my favourites.
Very good pub but feel it just msses the "gold star" it could easily attain. Nonetheless, I return again and again - drawn back to relish the superb "Bonfire Boy"
A classic, friendly pub with full range of Harvey's beers. Marred unfortunately by huge and very intrusive screen in public bar showing sports and overloud muzak in the saloon bar.
Large multi-roomed pub near the station.
Yesterday had Harveys Light and Fark Mild, Sussex, Hardlow, Armarda and their summer special. Beer in fine condition. Alao 2 ciders on handpump.
Reasonably priced menu mainly features sandwiches. jacket potatoes, ploughmans etc with some more substantial specials. Good VFM.
Both food and drink service was pretty efficient and the staff polite and helpful.
good pub serving good harveys beers, very good for the station
Ignore the last comment. It's for the Evening Star.
Excellent beer choice(best in Brighton) and quality, but very popular so expect to stand. Toilets still tatty.
One of Brighton's best. Excellent service and they take their beer quality very seriously.
Now this is a good old fashioned town pub offering very good Harveys beer. Close to the station, and better than the better known Evening Star up the road.
Busy little town pub, no doubt lots of passing trade but has feel of a local, beer in good nick, very nice
quaint pub obviously Harvey's own which is'nt a bad thing. Better pubs in Brighton though
Excellent pre-Christmas Old. The usual wonderful atmosphere and mix of clientele. As good as ever. 'Twas only a shame that they had already sold out of the Christmas Ale. That'll teach me to leave it so late.
10/10. Perhaps my favourite Brighton pub given its character and the most consistantly good pint of Harveys to be had in the area. I really love this pub!
Always excellent. 10/10
Traditional, unspoilt pub just below the station. The interior is divided into several drinking areas, two small bars at the front, a larger lounge and a conservatory to the rear. I sampled the Sussex Best and the seasonal Old Ale - both were good. Recommended.
Fantastic pub, totally brilliant. I've known it since the early 90s and if anything it's improved over the years. The ales are spot-on and the new food menu is excellent. 10/10
great place....went on saturday night and very much enjoyed myself. friendly staff and locals, excellent beer and banter.
didn't try the food but the pizzas that other people had certainly looked nice.
will definately go back!
Growing to love this place and it's ale more and more. I agree with Monk once again, except the Albion will be handing out a thrashing, I hope! 9/10
What can I say except its always my first choice for food and ale in Brighton? Good range of Harveys ales well kept, excellent food from the specials menu and friendly and helpful serving staff. Will be back on Friday 11 December when the mighty Colchester visit the Withdean. 8/10
Nice traditional pub. Four Harvey's beers on when I was in. Had the Armadfa then Best. Both very nice. Good service and comfortable atmosphere. We worth a visit.
I love Harveys beer me! This pub is another Brighton 'must visit' situated on a road that passes under the station forecourt. The Harveys Mild was on fine form and the rest of the range from this local brewery were on offer. Its quite quirky and small, not having been knocked around, the food seemed to be fairly limited to sandwhiches pretty much, but my cheddar sandwich actually contained cheese that you could taste, a rarity in the pub world where tasteless blocks of pap pass as cheese.
Quirky sort of pub with good Harveys beer. Loved the Porter , but didn't love the stench of Piss the Pub Eminated.
Excellent Harveys pub, with rarer brews including the Old, Lewes Brown and an excellent Porter. Efficient service, and the food looked good too. Bit of an odd covered area at the back, but overall: top of the range.
Classic pub - nice pint of Harveys - friendly staff - Mini Cheddars - what else could anyone want?
Classic boozer with a good range of Harvey's ales - the Mild was so-so but the 'Hadlow' was top notch. Food came within 10 minutes but then my order was at 12. Good wholesome stuff - Brue, Bacon & Avocado baguette - useful for slowing down the absorption of alcohol, and it worked.
Remains a consistently great pub, with a large range of Harveys beers (including the new Hadlow) and excellent food. I visited yesterday lunchtime with a group and enjoyed quick service and a very excellent spiced pork meal for 6.95. I no longer live in Brighton, but agree with those who say that making changes at this stage could actually be a backwards step.
Certainly agree with that. Splendid pub, visited on 23/08/08, swift half of excellently-kept Harveys' Hadlow; unchanged since last review. Yes, leave the pub as it is!
Please DON'T replace the furnishings. We love the place just as it is, thanks!
Great beer, friendly laid-back atmosphere. Great for a good night down the pub drinking and talking- no tvs or music to distract. Furnishings could do with replacing, and the 'conservatory' out the back has an odd, cold atmosphere compared to the rest of the pub and would be better as a beer garden.
Traditional old Harveys house with a carpetted lounge and a public bar with wooden floors. Bigger than it first appears, the lounge opens up to a quieter room behind this in turn leading on to a large conservatory type space. A garden area lies beyond. Music and theatre posters decorate the walls, the etched window to the bar proclaims "Smoking Room". How times have changed. Harveys Sussex Best, Hadlow, XX Mild, Olympia Golden and a wheat beer, Copperwheat I think on handpump. Two proper ciders too, Addlestone's and Westons Organic.
Decent pint of Harveys Armada when I called in. Seemed a bit quiet on a monday evening but would call in again when passing.
I can never decide on my favourite pub in Brighton. Is it the Lord Nelson, or the Evening Star? I guess I'll just have to carry on visiting both to find out. But what if I never do find out - will I have to keep drinking in both? Oh yes please.
The Lord Nelson is a pub that looks small from the outside but is actually quite spacious inside, and with an inviting gallery room right at the back. The Harveys beers are always superb and most of the usual varieties are here - if not the entire range.
Not living in Brighton I can't discern who the regulars are but the atmosphere is friendly and inviting - I've never experienced that icy stare reserved for outsiders that you get in some pubs.
I have nothing but fulsome praise for this pub - that's all you need to know. I'll stop now before I get boring.
PERFECT PUB WITH PERFECT BEER
Nice Guinness, my fellow traveller commented on good Armada, friendly service, high quality hostelry conveniently located 7 minute sprint from the station.
Or 12 minute hacking cough interspersed jog.
Nice friendly pub. Popular quiz night on Tuesday. Good selection of real ales
This is a proper old fashioned pub where you can relax back and just enjoy being somewhere that's not manufactured and formulaic. One of the best pubs in brighton for good beers and a genuine atmosphere. Lovely!
A great place to relax and read the paper, or go for a chat with good friends. The Harveys beers are usually on top form. Some people may focus on the tatty decor but I think it's homely. I don't think they do food in the evenings, but I may be wrong on that.
A good old fashioned town centre pub, refreshingly free of spivs, chavs and builders. It does the basics well: looks after the real ales and serves hearty (if unadventurous)food. If only more places would stick to this formula rather than going down the gastropub route, with overpriced wines and poncey, new age menus.
There is occasional live music with an especially good monthly folk session, so I'm told.
This pub is a bit spit and sawdust, with smelly toilets and a tiny bar. The staff find it difficult to keep abreast of everyone as the bar is kind of in-the-round and was three or four deep last time I was there on a Friday night. Great burgers though!
If I had time for just one pint in Brighton, the Lord Nelson is the pub I would drink in. Good old fashion no nonsense local where nothing seems to have changed for years. Wonderful staff and regulars, a good pint of Harvey's and a good humoured atmosphere very rarely experienced nowadays. Go there!
Traditional fairly basic city centre pub near the station serving excellent Harvey's ales. Most of the time there is a good atmosphere although I have occasionally been in there when some of the other customers have been distictly the worse for wear and generally a bit too lively. Not the best pub in Brighton but certainly in the top group.
Renewed my acquaintance with this pub today after a gap of several years. Nothing seemed to have changed - good unspoilt pub, excellent pint of Harveys and a barman who seemed genuinely pleased to see me. Mustn't leave it so long before going back!
One of the many good pubs that proliferate around the station. This one is right up there with the best. Nice old bar, wooden floorboards, and great greatpint of Harveys. Pub cricket team. For Albion fans, an interesting display of football players from early last century. I wish it was my local.
Still one of the truly proper pubs in Brighton that has not been messed about. Harveys is always 'spot on' and the food is tasty. Great lunchtime and early evening atmosphere.

A great find, a pub that looks small on entry but has alot of room to it by the looks of it Studenty feel, would return myself, if your in the mood for this kind of atmosphere
Quality pub with good atmosphere.
Warm handshake and promise of a return.
Lovely pub, especially when Graham and Ros are on duty! One of the last proper pubs left in the area - love it!
Enjoyed 4 Harveys beers and a meal in the lovely gallery area. Intersting layout.
Good pub, nice beer, good food
The best quality Harvey's to be found in Sussex.
There's a GORGEOUS barman who works here most afternoons. Dark hair, and wears his trousers low on his hips so that his boxers show. Darling, you're wonderful! The pubs's not bad either. DD
Crappy tables and seating but otherwise a nice oldschool pub, not too loud, lot's of beers and an 'interesting' layout - give it a go :) 7/10
Used to work over the road from it - great pub, great times.
This has always been a gem of a pub as far back as I can remember and one of the very few Harveys pubs to serve the Harveys Hadlow Bitter (previously PA Bitter) and in fact the full range of Harveys real ales - all well kept. Always a friendly welcome.
Easter Sunday afternoon, and after several pints of tip-top Harveys in this lovely place we felt all as if all the world's woes had melted away. A first visit for us, and we all agreed we'd return.
A gem!
Cheers,
This is a top, top pub.
When you enter it appears to be a cosy two-room local but opens up on the right hand side into another room and then the conservatory out the back.
The pub was busy when we arrived at 1:30 on Saturday lunchtime but it didn't take long to get served with some excellent Harvey's beer. And we tried the homemade burgers which arrived fairly quickly and were tasty along with some real chips too.
There's a TV in the small bar to the left but you'd have to get there early to get a seat for big games like the 6 Nations ones that were showing on Saturday.
The pub was a little smokey but not overly so.
well worth a visit.
This pub is fantastic - delightful Conservatory in the back which you can hire out free of charge for any events that you may have, good access to Brighton station. Does get busy after work on a Friday especially as offices just over the road do go in there - so if you want a table then get there early! Food at lunchtime is a variety - specials on the board by the bar! Worth a visit all the time!
Brighton is full of little locals like this, so much so that you wonder why other towns aren't. There really does seem to be a pub on every street corner, and probably a pub or two in the middle of the street as well . Quite possibly there are also vertical drinking joints and chichi bars too but I wouldn't know. This one is typical of the breed - a straightforward pub selling Harvey's Ales and serving as a community resource in the way that pubs should.
I love(d) this place. Been going there for 10 years. The sort of pub that makes you proud to be a Brightonian. Nice atmosphere, superb Harvey's and a great landlord. I would also normally add the food to this list, but unfortunately I had a rather unpleasant experience there last Saturday. After choosing the haddock kedgeree from the The Nelson's specials board I sat sipping my pint with great anticipation. It looked great on arrival and the first few mouthfuls tasted wonderful. Unfortunately I was immediately put-off by the three long reddish-brown hairs mixed into the kedgeree. Really not what you want! These hairs matched perfectly with the hard working lady who delivered the food from the kitchen. Yuck! If she was also cooking the food then where was her hair net!? Needless to say, I will not be eating in the Nelson for a long while. I may also be offering them a little less of my business in the future. There are plenty of other decent pubs serving good unpretentious grub in Brighton & Hove.
The Nelson is indeed a classic and very much a worthy target for the traditionalist who values a good range of very-well-kept ales, a lively mixed clientele, and a genuine local atmosphere founded upon good conversation and mutual appreciation. It's not a quiet "older persons" venue either; there is a big screen for sporting events and music is played. The Harvey's here really is always on top form and devotees of their brews should not miss a chance to sample them at the Nelson if the opportunity arises.
Found this gem using the CAMRA Good Beer Guide whilst on a family visit to Brighton. A proper, timeless English pub with friendly staff and clientele. An England match was being screened in the public bar but next door was buzzing with conversation. The Harveys Sussex Best was absolutely superb!
Began a crawl with a friend at this pub on 18th August 2006. Unchanged since last time, still just about the best pint of Harvey's Pale all year, and the Lord Nelson is still one of Brighton's best pubs - both for its superb atmosphere within and for the excellent quality of the beer. Was difficult to leave but we had other pubs lined up on the crawl!
Quite why I gave it only a 9 last review I cannot remember. It gets 10/10 now!
Great pub. Had a quality pint of Harveys Armada Ale. Good mixture of people in here. Always busy but always manage to find a seat. Only 2 minutes from The Station, well worth a visit if coming to Brighton.
The Harveys is excellent. Civilised atmosphere.
Great pub, friendly people, good beer.
Top place. just go there.
Probably the best pint of Harveys you'll find in Brighton, and they now do real ciders too.
Early evening tends to be "commuter time", and it can be a bit overcrowded.
First class pub selling superb Harvey's ales in proper traditional surroundings. Try the mild ale - a rare treat - why isn't all beer this good?
Had our Christmas 'do' here - very friendly, excellent service and food was perfect. Recommended.
Excellent Boozer. Worth a visit. Totally unspoilt.
This is one of my top ten pubs. Great ambience and great beer. On my most recent visit, there were six Harvey's draught beers available. You'd be hard-pressed to beat that. Avoid Tuesday evenings unless you enjoy quiz nights!
One of the best, most unspoiled pubs in Brighton. Excellent beer, friendly informal atmosphere and good imaginative but unpretentious food
busy pub? yes for a good reason a traditional ale mans pub full of atmosphere, always a nice mixed crowd and the harveys full range on offer, big screen tv for sport in left hand side of the pub away from those who dont want to watch. Nice back patio aswell. great local, definitely worth the short trip down from Brighton station for visitors, will not be dissapointed.
This is a small, unspoilt local near Brighton station which is always worth a visit. The whole Harvey's range is available and the beer is always excellent. A relaxed atmosphere and friendly bar staff. Don't miss it!
Excellent pub - fine beer and good food. Can get a bit smoky though.
Popped in there on Xmas day and stood at the bar for 10 mins. Didn't get served, admittedly the place was busy but not over the top. Lots of regulars got served in front of me and I thought "not very welcoming".
Left to prepare turkey.
Having heard so much about the place and the fondness it has in so many's hearts I tried again a couple of weeks ago. Better all round this time.
Maybe it was just the day that was in it on my first call and the fact that I wasn't a regular. Still, it was Xmas and there should have been room at the inn...
Anyway, aside from that, yep - it's a good place to be.
Within a stone's throw of Brighton Station, this is an excellent (if busy) town pub where you can sample the full range of beers from Harveys, including the hard to find XX Mild! Coupled with no nonsense pub fayre, this pub is a great choice for anyone in the area - heartily recommended.
Robin - 14 Aug 2004 01:33 |
Wonderful pub very handy for the station - I am a bit biassed coz my lass was a barmaid there.
Will - 15 Jul 2004 23:00 |
Well worth visiting, this is probably Brighton's main outlet for Harveys ale. A good mix of local residents and passers-by, the atmosphere is welcoming and the barstaff are WELL above the B'ton average!
lovely pub - worth a visit, well kept beer & v. friendly staffs, food lunchtimes, nice locals, what more could you ask for?
Superb pub - excellent Harveys beers, good staff, fine lunchtime food. Only snag can be a bit smoky at times.
Adrian - 28 Oct 2003 10:42 |
A gem! Part of an excellent crawl around the station, taking in the basketmakers arms and the evening star, all three of these pubs are individual and independent. All serve exquisite real ale and deserve a visit in their own right. I am rating it 9/10 as I enjoyed perfect Harveys on my last visit and found the staff and locals to be very friendly. Long may this last!
A great Harvey's pub with a wonderful atmosphere. Great to finish or start a crawl from, as it is close to the train station. The beer is top class and they have a good selection of wines too. A conservatory covers what was once a beer garden. Jazz music featured.
