please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

All fine except £8 for a (Greggs?) pasty and undercooked chips. What a rip-off.

Place was empty on entering and empty on leaving. Only stayed for 1 pint (Chinook) wich was excellent.
Hommel - 24 Jun 2012 21:35
arihalls comment below is absolutely true for tonight, but I wouldnt call it ghastly. Yes there were dickheads in who thought they were funny students (maybe they were students) but the beers excellent, albeit dear. On a quiet night its probably fine but it was certainly rowdy tonight. Some folk like that!
Could the comments about the management be personal?

Richardhuddleston - 25 Mar 2012 00:07
Have to echo the previous comments. Found this place pretty unremarkable and had a forgettable pint of an ale I have forgotten the name of. Was busy and am probabaly being unduly harsh on it as I was expecting more from it but certainly not worth getting off the train for.

This pub, once the Yorkshire Pub of the Year is becoming a victim of its own success. On a Saturday, every time a train arrives, a load of twenty/thirty year olds pile in - followers of the Ale Trail promoted a while back on TV. They are usually loud, drunk and in recent times have started dressing up in 'traditional' Yorkshire garb - cloth caps, collarless shirts, waistcoats. Some males even dress as women in cheap tatty skirts and shawls.

It's embarrassing, it's cheap, tawdry and tacky. It's not the pubs fault - they make shedloads of money from this image. But if you like to have beer in a quiet yet congenial atmosphere, avoid this place at weekends.

Ghastly. Just ghastly.
arihall - 15 Oct 2011 21:13
Ros Arden is ruining this pub and has destroyed it's fine name. All the best staff have left or been fired. It is such a shame as this pub used to be packed out daily. Now it's a shadow of it's former self with bad standards, poor beer, disinterested staff, mucky floors, bad smell, flies and Ros prowling around driving customers away and sacking staff!
TraceyMcQ - 4 Oct 2011 02:54
The new manager of The West Riding is horrible!

she prowls the bar floor looking down at the customers, talking down to the staff, and generally turning the beer sour!

Ms Arden is dragging this once fine pub down kicking and screaming, and it is a great shame.

The best station bar I've ever been to for sure. Called in twice; once on the Real Ale Train Trail, and once more recently whilst waiting to be picked up from the station. A choice of half a dozen or so real ales, along with various ciders and the usual pub offerings. I enjoyed a couple of pints of very well kept Roosters Yankee; at 2.50 a go it was excellent value for money - particularly as the popularity of this pub and lack of any other serious rivals in this area could dictate that they could set their prices a bit higher. Well worth a train trip to seek out this gem alone !
MountainMan - 19 Jul 2011 16:40
Excellent pub and a good place to start the Ale Trail to Manchester. A wide selection of real ales, all very well kept and breakfast (full or veggie English) served from 10 to 4 (pint included). Very busy, but the staff make sure you don't wait very long. Pleasant atmosphere inside, more like a real pub that a station bar.
FlimFlamMachine - 7 Feb 2011 14:01
Finally got here on a recent visit. As good as everyone says it is. A good range of beers, but only time to sample 2, Fernandes Bitter (Wakefield) and Anglo-Dutch Apistus (from just down the road). The Christmas menus were out, and looked extremely good value. May need to make the long journey back (from The South West) just to try them out!
beerpilgrim - 10 Oct 2010 23:18
Good little pub with a wide range of hand pulled ales invariabley kept in good condition. Very busy place but lots of friendly bar staff mean you aren't kept waiting too long to be served. One to be visited if you've never been before. Regular trains to Leeds/Huddersfield/Manchester.
mac.hawk - 25 Sep 2010 14:26
One of the station pubs on the "real ale trail "of the transpennine rail route. A proper pub , understated but still full of character and a part of a fabulous grade 11 listed station building. Nice pint of Landlord. I believe it is one of the few surviving genuine station pubs in the country, but a great pub in its own right. The sort of place I wish was my local.
tarkatherotter - 13 Aug 2010 18:50
Pleasant station pub which was a delight to retreat into on a cold June (!) afternoon. I'd been recommended this place by a couple of different sources and as befits a boozer with a GBG listing it had an excellent range of real ales; TT Landlord & Mild, Black Sheep, Elland 872 Porter, Anglo Dutch Midsummer Ale (brewed locally), Springhead Charlie's Angel and Glentworth Lucky Star. The Charlie's Angel was good, a hoppy golden ale in decent nick. The interior is basic but well kept and the place was pretty busy during my brief visit indicating its popularity in the region. Definitely worth a look.
ChrisP87 - 10 Jun 2010 09:07
A windswept station platform gives no clue as to the bustle found inside here. It consists of three interlinked rooms, the middle of which contains the bar. Plenty of memorabilia relating to both beer and railways. The period clocks were a nice touch too. There were (I think) 8 real ales available, but I had difficulty reaching the far end of the bar to check. I had a pint of Timothy Taylors Mild, because I had never seen it before. It was well kept, but not my favourite TT beer. There were also some Belgian beers on tap, including De Koninck.

In contrast to Wetherspoons, the small area behind the bar seemed to be overflowing with bar staff ! I think I counted 6, all of whom were kept very busy, and were wearing t-shirts with the slogan I missed the train at Dewsbury.

You arent allowed to drink on the station platform, but you can sit outside on the other side of the building in what is otherwise thestation car park, but that rather defeats the point.

I saw two food related saids, one advertising All Day Breakfast, and the other Angies Curry Nights (Tues and Weds), but the emphasis here is mainly on the beer.

The main disadvantage of the place is that it is well known. Thus it is always liable to get suddenly overwhelmed by large parties on pub crawls.

Martinsh - 18 May 2010 00:10
Good range of local ales and friendly staff and clientelle. Opens at 10am on Saturdays (possibly other days) and serves a very good full English breakfast. There's an entrance to the pub from the station platform.
Rod_Hariga - 5 May 2010 20:36
Called in again on way home. The Black Sheep was excellent. Staff very good as the beer didnt "look" right so she went off to the celler to find out why without even being asked. Very good.
ppw - 18 Feb 2010 17:31
Loads of real ale - how many were there? 8 or so? mostly interesting micros. Been here a number of times on the Summer rail ale trail and the only pub I know that's always busy in the morning with fellow RAT's! Telly (footy) and good jukebox but it up a notch or two. No excuse for missing your train here!!
Booze_Allen - 30 Jan 2010 20:52
Great jukebox, nice and loud with a heavy bias towards punk and ska, probably worth 9/10 in its own right! But it's the ale that the great thing, great quality and variety. Full of passing trade on rail ale trails.
Abteilung - 25 Jan 2010 18:55
On Dewsbury Station. Great beers at good prices. Seems to be about 4 guests and food avaliable.
ppw - 25 Aug 2009 21:48
Very highly recommended. Located on the station so easy to get to. Well kept cask ales at a reasonable price.
The food menu looks good although I've not eaten there.
alexw - 25 Aug 2009 20:09
Enjoyed a visit to this recommended pub while staying in the area in March. Loved it. Plenty of people there and difficult to find seating, but enjoyed the ale selection all of which were good. Had a meal too. Intersting decor, but would need to find a quieter time to get a proper look round.
gillhalfpint - 10 Jul 2009 12:11
Enjoyed a 2nd visit here as much as the first about 7 years ago. Beer range was good then as was the service and it's just as good now. Top boozer.
ZapuTheSnake - 15 Jun 2009 17:07
Excellent packed pub, cracking beer. Very obliging service when one of our party had to take his beer back.
simontheeditor - 12 May 2009 19:29
Deceiving pub, looks like the tardis from the Station side & would be easily missed but is quite a big pub from the front (often missed as it is set back from the station entrance which is a shame as it is stunning). If you enjoy old-worldy then this is for you with its dingy interior, wooden floors & train memorabilia. There seemed to be a good atmosphere & lots of people in.
We didn't eat but enjoyed some beers, of which there was an excellent choice and all tasted good (especially the stout).
Drink_Gerls - 7 Mar 2009 13:18
Sensational pub that deserves higher than the 7.4 that it currently recieves on here. How can anyone rank this any less than an 8? Beyond belief. A superb range of ales with 3 Taylors regulars and several guests, as well as a decent range of lagers. We went in on Sunday the Sunday dinner option is a roast meat (I believe this changes week to week) in a breadcake served with gravy and roast potatoes for a fiver. Amazing value, it was turkey when we visited and although i'm not usually a huge fan of turkey, this was perfect and far better than messing around with a roast dinner. MUST VISIT!!
Sharp - 3 Mar 2009 13:02
This place would be a great pub anywhere, but to find it acting as a railway station buffet as well makes it exceptional. Excellent range of real ale, including a fine Pinnacle Porter from Naylor's Brewery. No better place to while away time while waiting for (or missing) a train (or two).
rpadam - 28 Feb 2009 14:29
Always seems to be a busy place, especially early evening after work. Food is very good, especially the curry nights! Serve a good range of ale. Staff are ok. Great location, and I've only missed the train at Dewsbury once!
leicester_pubster - 5 Feb 2009 22:48
This place maintains standards that many others could learn from. 1st sample a little cool but the TT Landlord spot on. If visiting the Cellar Bar along the line check times as it doesn't open till 4 some days (doh!).
Leicesterbeer - 10 Dec 2008 20:37
First ever visit from the John Bonser roadshow ( or should that be railshow?) last Monday - 10 November.

This is a splendid real ale pub situated in part of Dewsbury Railway Station, a listed building.

The pub has won many awards - look on the walls for the certificates. Note also the bottled beer collection overhead.

There's 8 handpumps - on my visit, there were 2 Timmy's beers on, Black Sheep ( inevitably?), plus 5 micros including one from the Anglo Dutch Brewery. I had a pint of Glentworth Little Gem, plus a pint of the intriguingly named Bonfire Toffee, a very moreish chocolatey tasting beer ( forgotten who brews it unfortunately )

There isn't the railway memorabilia of, say, the Buffet Bar at Stalybridge, but it's an essential stopping off point if in the area.

The pub tells T-shirts - " I missed the train at Dewsbury" - on the day of my visit, quite a lot of people missed quite a lot of trains ( or didn't have trains to catch, more likely )

There's a good range of foreign bottled beers and good value lunches are available.

Outside seating is available on the station concourse.

Dewsbury is on the Leeds - Huddersfield line, about a 15 minute journey from either station.

Do call in if you get the chance
JohnBonser - 17 Nov 2008 13:26
Excellent real ale pub on Dewsbury staion platform. Berr is always excellent for quality and choice- same ownership as Anglo Dutch Brewery so often some of their beer present. Food is superb value. Also now own the Cellar Bar opposite Batley staion (3 minutes on the train). Can build this into a superb train pub crawl; Leeds, Batley, Dewsbury, Hudddersfield, Slaithwaite, Marsden, Stalybridge (hic), what a good do!!

Great Great Great. Deffinately one of the best pubs in yorkshire, real ales, ciders & english wines. And good food. Nice staff. A reason to visit Dewsbury!!!
juansgirl - 20 Sep 2007 13:21
Visited again last week and the standards seem to be as high as ever. A very well kept pint. One of my favourite pubs in West Yorkshire.
MINTYBOOM - 19 Jun 2007 18:49
Well worth a visit, amazin beer,8/10
fat_beer_badger - 19 Apr 2007 14:10
great pub with excellent food at tremendous value for money
foxtraveller - 24 Jan 2007 00:00
great pub - good beer & friendly locals. Where the beautiful people are (well by Dewsbury standards)
jillbert - 4 Jan 2007 21:35
An excellent pub - both for the selection of ales in top condition and the close proximity to public transport! About 5 good steps from the right door on Huddersfield-bound trains and you're through the door. Great stuff!
MINTYBOOM - 29 Dec 2006 18:19
Brilliant pub , been once and loved it , easy to get to for people who live in Manchester area and well reccomended for a day out for the food alone , YOU DONT HAVE TO GO INTO THE TOWN THANKGOD

will be back time and time again ,
RIP_BODDIES - 19 Jul 2006 13:54
Great little pub and a great pint of Tim Taylors. I was there watching Charlton play Man Utd and losing 4:0, what a drag. Met some good musos there, maybe i'll bring my band over there once from Germany, it would be nice. They had some band there that covers Neue Deutsche Welle....wierd for England!!.
jroswald - 7 Jul 2006 14:39
Great little pub. Go there at weekday lunchtimes and have some of Mary's fabulous food. All home-made and interesting, and huge portions for little money.

Good points - all the above, plus it's non smoking in the dining area at lunchtime; great beer - again interesting. Always has Landlord on, plus a few local rarities.

Bad points - none really, except no food at weekends (a Sunday lunch there would be terrific - please!!)
gazman - 8 Jun 2006 13:53
Great little pub in the train station. I always pop in for a jar or two when I get off a train in Dewsbury. Fantastic local ale, footy on the telly, beer garden, friendly regulars and a toilet under the stairs. What more could you ask for? Plus, they have a great music festival every summer which lasts three days. Fantastic pub. Best in Dewsbury.
redefine - 11 May 2006 21:43
Great Pub (Spent my wedding day getting roaring drunk here). Best beer in Dewsbury.
mrounding - 12 Mar 2006 15:01
Absolutely wonderful pub -- a fine partner to the Stalybridge
buffet.
Uncle_Dunkel - 26 Feb 2006 21:17
Superb place - good beers, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. Worth interupting any trans-pennine train trip for !
NellySays - 25 Jan 2006 09:14
The best pub in Yorkshire - excellent real ales, very friendly locals
Edd70 - 19 Jul 2005 12:39
one of the best pubs ive been in in europe great beer and jukebox plus shows football without it interffing with the crowd
mickcelt - 29 Jan 2005 19:54
Excellent. I visited the pub at lunchtime on Saturday 16/10/04 and the place was heaving. It's the sort of pub that makes lunchtime drinking more justifiable! Durham and Timothy Taylor are amongst the breweries supplying the many handpulls in this splendid hostelry. It is well worth a visit to Dewsbury if only to visit this superb pub.
lad_newton - 18 Oct 2004 10:46
Best pub in Dewsbury. At least 6 superb real ales, range always changing. Friendly people. 3 rooms, getting quieter or louder as you go! Music festivals in summer. And the train goes past the door!
