user reviews of the Old Bell, Harpenden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Another foodery where drinkers are tolerated on a perch near the entrance (unless gorgers of food have to wait for a table then they take up that space while waiting).

Certainly competitive in pricing, for its lunch menu at least, but this restaurant is less of a pub and has dropped in quality recently. It is clean, presentable and with courteous service. However they are currently looking for kitchen staff and that might explain an over 30 mins wait just to get Fish and Chips and a 'Beef and Kidney' pudding served. Insufficient serving staff even for the very limited number of diners. Kitchen resorting to shouting when a dish is ready. My F&C was OK but my wife's B&K pudding was rather pastry-like than suet-pudding like. Limited (actually very limited) ale on tap - I had a pint of Lock Keepers (3.9%) which was local and OK but there was only one other ale - despite the website promising..." its wide range of fine cask ales and quality ales...". 175ml Pinot Grigio £4.79, Pint Lock keepers £3.93, Beef & Steak pudding £6.99 and F&C £5.49. Total £20.20 which for two cooked lunches in the area is competitive. I doubt we'll be back for a while.

I found a spider and a blonde hair in my over-processed, over-cooked, rancid food. I would strongly recommend that this pub is avoided at all costs.

Bland dining 'pub' with an identikit pubco interior. Do people really prefer this corporate blandness over individuality and character ?
Nowhere really to sit if you just want a pint. Had a pint of Pride at the bar - which was drinakble though didn't taste like Pride (was an improvement on many pints of it though).

Not as bad as a lot of the reviews I have read. It is indeed overprices but you'er in Herts!

Limited and not very inspiring real ale choice but in very good nick, which is all you can ask.

Well it's a Chef and Brewer, so yes, it is more of a restaurant than a pub. Only problem is, it's not very good at being either. The current rating is 4.4/10. How on earth it is so high, I don't know.
On our visit, there was a lack of staff, atmosphere, comfort or warmth. We waited for about 40 minutes for our food, which, by it's temperature, had been sitting on a shelf for about ten of them.
As to the beer, I had a pint of Adnams Broadside. Now, I am a fan of Adnams beers, but if this had been my first, I would never have another one.
A pub to return to? NO, not even if you paid me.

Nice place but poor food so no value for money.

Unfortunately this pub has fallen from grace over the past few years, despite its strong history and lovely building the landlord is not particularly welcoming and during the week the staff are too busy on drinks orders for the restaurant than serving the bar customer.

Food is expensive for a pub and is often of a basic standard despite the restaurant being regularly busy. I can only assume that the diners are happy with mediocre food.

However, if the landlord possesses such an uncivil attitude (sign outside displays "Steve offers a warm welcome" ) it does little to encourage repeat visits. I have since reverted to taking a taxi to far more welcoming pubs that offer what one would expect from a hospitality business.

Certainly agree with the last posting. This palce is really a restaurant. No real ale on at all on visit - something to do with the pipes! Bar man was friendly enough offering a pint of John Smith's smooth instead. I made my excuses and left.

More of a restaurant than a pub. A trip to the bar can be very time consuming as the single bar person has to deal with table orders and eventually may get round to serving you.

Although I said it's more of a restaurant the food is quite pricey and nothing special.

I won't be hurrying back although it is a nice old building.
