Nice pub, welcoming staff & good ales (I haven't eaten there ...yet) beer is a bit pricy but that is to be expected given the location. when I was there last it was reasonably busy but the staff coped well, considering the number of people who popped in for a quick pint and the crowd in the dining area the whole place was still kept clean & tidy. all in all a good little find.

After a couple of pints in the Draft House we moved on to this large Fuller's pub which sits in a prominent position on a busy junction between Tower Hill and the Embankment. I have driven passed this pub many times over the years but until now have never visited it.
On the bar is the full choice of Fuller’s ales and lagers across the 6 hand pumps, my pint of Oliver's Island @ 3.8% was very good.
Being a large pub it was around half full, no food being served on this visit but it is one of Fuller’s pie and ale establishment.
Nice interior with columns, drapes & brass chandeliers, complimenting the wooden and brass bar.
We only stayed for one drink before moving on as there wasn’t much atmosphere on this visit.

Popped in after visiting poppy installation at Tower Hill - Usual Fullers decor had a pint of Fullers Autumn Red Ale which was pretty decent, and so it should be an eyewatering and frankly outrageous £4.25. Nice one Fullers
|
Mixed feelings about this place. Decent pint of seafarers, but the food is as overpriced and under portioned as you'd expect in tower hill. So I suppose you pay your money and takes your pick. I can't say I'm eager to eat here again, but worth a stop for a pint or two if visiting the sights nearby.

I love this pub, great characte, great beer, Will worth a visit..
|
It's OK, usual standard Fuller's selection occasionally featuring one of the seasonal ales. Pretty quiet for its location, especially compared to the Draft House & the crazy 'Spoons across the road.
|
Nice pub. Not the biggest but staff were pleasant enough and the Discovery was well-kept. I can imagine it getting busy with tourists during the summer but early on a Saturday lunchtime in November it was a quiet place to sit and look at the view.
|
Very nice pub; friendly staff, and most of all, fine beer: Visited the pub after a visit to Tower of London. We were a bunch of guys from Denmark on a football-trip to London, and we randomly fell over this pub. We don't regret. Had a ESB and a Discovery well served. The ESB was great. Is recommended, and I will visit it again if i'm in the neighborhood.

Been meaning to visit this place for a while now and finally managed a quick pint on Friday evening whilst heading back towards London Bridge.
Because it is so close to the Tower of London it is always going to get a load of tourist but it also gets plenty of suits which makes for an interesting mix.
It has a decent selection of beers, I went for the Aspels cider which was good but expensive at circa £4.70 a pint.
Will go back for a longer visit.

Good Fuller's pub near the Tower of London. A noose hangs at the bar. Good range of Fuller's ales but a little pricey, but the food was good and my wife the fish pie.
|
Fullers house in a converted Nat West Bank. Handy for Tower of London.
Usual full rage of Fullers Ale available. Discovery was good.
Only downside was I stood outside and was accosted by tourists (which i dont mind) and beggars (which I do)
|
This is just an extension to the nearby insurance broking offices that surround the place (Tower Place, LUC etc)... all rather depends if you are into that sort of target audience and am prepared to listen to their, "chat"...!
|
Does a good job of making a new pub look old. Good beer and great interior, especially if you have oversea visitors.
|
Completely pleasant pub with broad Fullers offering. I wish more pubs sold "Chiswick". Only had the one as absolutely heaving but decor / vibe did seem reasonable. There is some space outside, but you're very aware of the traffic....
|
Chanced upon this pub one Sunday afternoon on a walk from Tower Hill. Excellent Fullers pub with the full range of their ales plus on the day Bengal Lancer. Had an excellent 2 pints. Place is a little on the small side with not that many seats so we had to stand up for a while. Most impressed and added to the crawl. NOTE: Pub can close (and did) at 6pm on Sundays in winter.
|
I've driven past this place dozens of times without actually going in. I'm guessing its about 15 years old and it turns out to be one of Fullers better City offerings (without surpassing the excellent Swan in Leadenhall Market). Fullers have clearly spent quite a deal of money on this place - baroque wall and ceiling decoration and a large number of repro portraits in ornate frames hang on the walls. It all lends to the atmosphere and there is a full range of Fullers beers on offer - Pride, ESB, Chiswick, Discovery and Trafalgar on pump and Honeydew on tap.
Clientele heavily male dominated and the only real drawback is that the road outside is noisy and busy. Still it's worth dropping into this place if in the area.
|
Not a bad little pub with good, well kept beer.
|
Fullers pub which, as the name might indicate, is situated close to Tower Hill and the Tower of London. The pub is part of a larger Grade 2 listed building, which formed part of Christ Church hospital previously.
It's smaller inside than it looks externally - in many respects, it's a typical bare-boarded City pub interior, with stools to perch on by the window, but with a number of large reproduction paintings of former kings and queens adding some character to the place.
In recognition of its proximity to the Tower and the tourist potential, specially printed HDQ T shirts and polo shirts are on sale at approx 10 and 16 respectively. There's also a hangman's noose suspended from the ceiling at a height that won't alarm the Health and Safety Brigade.
The London Pride - 3.05p - was in good form. The seasonal beer - Red Fox - was also on.
This is a perfectly adequate pub for a pint or so if in the area.

Interesting pub name taken from the chosen method of execution of traitors of the realm practiced on nearby Tower Hill in days gone past. As early posters have commented this place is a bit of a Tardis in reverse in that what looks like a large pub from the outside turns into a much smaller bar than you were expecting when you enter. Fortunately, although it is situated on the corner of Lower Thames Street it benefits from having its own pedestrian area out front thus allowing a large area for outside drinking, which was being fully utilised by local office workers on the early evening of my visit. Although how all these suits fit into the pub on a cold winters day is a bit of a mystery. Inside theres a smallish corner bar area dispensing the full range of Fullers ales and the dcor benefits, as aforementioned, from having several reproductions of famous paintings of British Kings and Queens adorning the walls, including Holbein's famous portrait of the Henry VIII during his bloater period. This could easily have been made into a tourist trap, but I think Fullers have largely managed to steer away from this and although not one of the best Fullers emporiums Ive been in I found it a perfectly acceptable pub all the same.
|
Stumbled upon this pub by accident, I must admit the NAme enticed me inside. I found an excellant pub selling London Pride and ESB. I sampled the London Pride which was in fine form. This pub is nicely decorared with Oil pinting adorning the walls. Two plasma TV's were showing sport but the volume was not up high enabling normal conversations to continue. Toilets were down in the basement which had a spiral starrcase. Disabled toilets were available at street level. Well worth popping in for a pint if in the area. Food was also available.
|
Decent beer, and atmosphere, better than most in the area.

Excellent pub - shame about the boring insurance drones who frequent it and can't stop talking "shop".

Hi there ,my names Sue I used to work at The Hung Drawn and Quarted.I am desperatly trying to get ahold of James who used to own the place or run it with his dad Jimmy. Please could someone let me know if he still runs it.Or if they have his surname or contact details for me that would be soooo great. Would really like to catch up with them. This place was like a home away from home to me. Really hope to hear back from someone soon. Thanks Sue Forsyth nee Gray

Very Nice. Good atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff, space to sit if you avoid the 'city' hours (1:30-2:30, 5-6). Working at the Tower, this is a nice place to have at your doorstep. Long live the HD&Q.
|
Nice interior, serving a good range of Fullers beers. Only gripe is that we couldnt get a seat. The (empty) upstairs section was roped off, presumably for the nonexistent diners.
Could get your beer to take away as well, which is something Ive never seen in a central London pub before
|
Not what you would expect from the outside, quite nice when you get in but not very big.
|
A place I used to bypass when working nearby, I found The Hung Drawn and Quartered to be a lovely pub on my visit yesterday (May 1st). As others have noted, the appearance on the outside does indeed suggest something bigger then you actually get inside. The pub is actually quite quaint and makes for a lovely drinking spot. There was the usual range of Fullers beers on offer and the condition of the London Pride and Indian Pale Ale was superb. Expect the usual mix of suited and booted office types and Id imagine it can get pretty crammed on a Friday after 5, yet this is a very acceptable place to whittle away time with a paper or good company. The decor is quite grand also. Well worth a visit.
|
One man down (due to work commitments or more plausibly confiscation of man card) we went here on a Thursday night, hoping to have a few quiet drinks. Unfortunately for us the place was packed and space was at a premium. It thinned out by 8ish however and we were able to enjoy the pubs beautiful interior.. Great portraits surrounded the place looking down on all its drinkers, looked to be even a Bradshaw up there, which you dont usually see! Bar staff were efficient, tap beers were unexceptional and sadly they were not serving any food.
|
I used to drive past here quite often before I worked in London and was always struck by its unpleasant name and wanted to check it out. I finally had the opportunity to visit recently and was very surprised by its size. It looks massive form the outside yet unless I was missing another room round the back, it's really not very big at all. And it was freezing inside too, put the heating on! Very, very high ceilings coupled with way too bright lighting made it feel a bit impersonal and detracted from the potential it has to have a nice atmosphere. Liked the noose behind the bar tho - is this in case the bar staff get pissed off with the City toffs?!
|
Good to find a decent pub near Tower Hill. Good to see that they'd gone for something a bit more original in terms of decor. Had a nice pint of Pride.
|
popped in saturday , didnt think this place was open on a saturday but it was last saturday , had a pint of pride which tasted just right , didnt really notice the refurb but still a blinding pub
|
Very Very good pub. Like what they have done during the makeover. The new Pics are fantastic staff good as usuall.
|
It's historical.
|
Yes should have said it opened up after being closed for three weeks, with such a comprehensive and extensive makeover that its really hard to see what has changed, except the letters are shinier than they were before...

Seems to be open......

Seems to be closed, all signs gone and doors firmly shut....

A rare and welcome thing: a pub near Fenchurch Street station that is open at the weekend!
Had a reasonable glass of wine (although not chilled quite to my liking) in here yesterday and thought that the service was very pleasant - I'd pop in again if in the area.
|
2.60 a pint of Pride served by friendly staff in reasonably clean pub (i expect they will put a lock on the ladies toilet door before my next visit). the beer was 1st class though
|
Nice friendly pub that is a bit like the Tardis in reverse. Looks huge form the outside but once inside feels tiny with very few areas to sit and eat. I tend to go there during the day when I do go there and the beer is fine but not the best pint of Fullers in the area. OK in the summer because you can stand outside but only if you don't mind car fumes.
|
been in here a few times mainly during the day , really nice pub all in all , the staff are mainly all australian or south african but good at what they do , the beer is of good quality and i do like it in here during the day , havent visited at night yet so cant comment on that
|
Have now visited on three occassions and each time I didn't stay long.
Probably not a bad pub, but it gets too crowded for my liking.
|
This place didn't do much for me. Seemed like the locals were enjoying their time there. Nothing jumped out about the pub - seemed a bit dull and drab. Decent pint of Chiswick.
|
good pub with well kept ale. food good at lunchtimes, they used to do great pies, not sure if they still do. can get overcrowded though

Very impressed on my visit last Thursday evening ( day before Good Friday ) Prompt and friendly service and the London Pride was spot on. Has more seating room than most typical stand up to drink City pubs which is an added bonus. Can drink outside on the pavement in sunny weather. Worth a revisit, sooner rather than later, as far as I'm concerned
|
No great shakes, but also nothing too offensive.
Decent enough drinker. Worth a look - in if doing a little tour of city Boozers.
Drinkies outside in summer which is always nice.
|
Upset egghead and pikey dont remember his lovely girlfriend who used to run the place!!! Like they say worth dropping in for a pint or a couple of inbetweenies
Debra - 12 Oct 2004 14:16 |
yeah i remember that Beaker guy - was scottish but claimed to be south african. Good fun all the same. Nice pub
Pikey - 7 Oct 2004 15:03 |
Has went down hill over the years. Used to be run many years ago by a bald Scottish guy who looked just like that "Beaker" from Sesame Street! If you are passing by it is still worth popping in.
Egghead - 7 Oct 2004 14:59 |
Lovely olde fashioned Pub, not really all that old tho. Size is a bit of a surprise, looks huge from the out side, but smaller inside. Great aussie/kiwi behind the bar on my visit (he'll hate me for not remembering!)
RoK - 14 Sep 2004 15:45 |
Such a shame this pub is so small inside. It's the opposite of a Tardis. Better in the summer when you can stand outside. Not so bad when going there on a Corporate Card (like 5pm tonight!)

Just popped in for a pint before watching the guns being fired at the Tower of London. Not very busy, but a nice pint of Honey Dew even if the prices look like they have been inflated because of the tourists. Perfectly adequate place with a good selection of beers.

Just an old fashioned pub in the city.
